  Ok, firstly this is not about forms this is about consistent layout as a user explores a site. let me explain: If we imagine a (non-ajax) digital camera online store, say someone was on the DSLR section and specified to view the cameras in Gallery mode and order by price. They then click onto the Compact camera's page. It would be in the users interests if the 'views' they selected we're carried over to this new page. Now, i'd say use a session - am i wrong? are there performance issues i should be aware of for a few small session vars ( ie view=1 , orderby=price) ?

• Tracking pageviews and displaying related data

  I want track which articles a user read on a website. Then with that data, be able to know: 1) - top N articles read in the last hour/day/week/month 2) - show recommendations ("users who read this, also read that") 3) - same as (1), but for a specific section on the site Since the site has high traffic ( 1M views/day) i can't use a RDBMS for this. I started to look at NoSQL (cassandra specifically) and since it's all new to me i'm not sure it's what i need or not. I'm possitive i'm not the first one who needs something like this but couldn't find links/articles giving me pointers on how to do something like this. Is NoSQL the best aproach? Any tips on the data model? Thanks.

• Updating Label on previously loaded view?

  I am working on a simple app tab-bar based application that has two views. The first is the main application and the second is a simple instruction screen. What I am trying to do is create a update a label on that second screen as things change in the main app. Because the second screen is only simple with one label and some text I am not unloading it once its loaded. After the first viewDidLoad I can update the label just fine, but after that is there a way to catch successive view switches from the tab-bar menu so I can update the label? many thanks gary

  i want to make my threads content searchable with full text search engines like solr. but i wonder one thing. should i index just the thread.title, thread.body and post.body or should i index username, created date, nr of posts, views, country, region and city too that belongs to thread? i mean when an user search for a thread he will get hits returned containing thread title, 2 lines of body, which user has posted it, creation date, tags, and so on. should i index all this information too? but then it would be pretty much the whole database. or should i just index the 3 first columns i mentioned for full text search. and another question. when an user post a new thread, then i have to immidiately tell solr to add that row? if im not, how would it be searchable?

• Is it hacky to manually construct JSON and manually handle GET, POST instead of using a proper RESTful API for AJAX functionality?

  I started building a Django app, but this probably applies to other frameworks as well. In Backbone.js methods that call the server (fetch(), create(), destroy(), etc.), should you be using a proper RESTful API such as one provided by Tastypie or Django-Piston? I've founded it easier and more flexible to just construct the JSON in my Django Views, which are mapped to some URLs that Backbone.js can use. Then again, I'm probably not leveraging Tastypie/Django-Piston functionality to the fullest. I'm not ready to make a full-fledged RESTful API for my app yet. I simply would like to use some of the AJAXy functionality that Backbone.js supports. Pros/Cons of doing this?

• What is the Simplest Possible Payment Gateway to Implement? (using Django)

  I'm developing a web application that will require users to either make one time deposits of money into their account, or allow users to sign up for recurring billing each month for a certain amount of money. I've been looking at various payment gateways, but most (if not all) of them seem complex and difficult to get working. I also see no real active Django projects which offer simple views for making payments. Ideally, I'd like to use something like Amazon FPS, so that I can see online transaction logs, refund money, etc., but I'm open to other things. I just want the EASIEST possible payment gateway to integrate with my site. I'm not looking for anything fancy, whatever does the job, and requires < 10 hours to get working from start to finish would be perfect. I'll give answer points to whoever can point out a good one. • How can I type cast EventArgs to have a .point property in c#? [closed]

  I'm working with a double click function in c#. the function takes an object and EventArgs as it's parameters: private void gvHL7_DoubleClick(object sender, EventArgs e){ . . . } However, I want to use the .Point property, and EventArgs doesn't have that property. I know that DevExpress.XtraGrid.Views.Grid.GridMenuEventArgs does, but it's saying that's an invalid casting. What type should I cast my EventArgs instance to if I wish to access the .Point property? Edit: The double click function I'm working with is provided by devexpress for their grids.

• Problems crossing the boundary between protected greasemonkey execution space and the unsafeWindow l

  Hi guys. Here is my problem: I've registered some callbacks into a Yahoo event driven webpage (betfair.com market views) and am trapping the betsPlaced events with a handler. So far so simple. Next stage is to get the event back into greasemonkey land, and while I know that from greasemoney space you can call unsafeWindow.stuff, there is no reverse operation (by design). So if I want to send the contents of the event over, say, a cometd queue, my carefully set up jquery, greasemonkey, YUI2, betfair environment fails by telling me that unsafeWindow processes cant call GM_ajax stuff. This is obviously safe and sane, but it basically stops me doing what I want to do. Has anyone tried doing this (ignore the cometd stuff, just general ajax calls) and succeeded? I've had a look at pages like this: http://wiki.greasespot.net/0.7.20080121.0%2B_compatibility but it doesnt appear to work for all the calls.

• Is the method addSubview of NSView inherently slow? (Cocoa OSX)

  I am trying to speed my gui that loads very slow slow when I am loading a large project (the gui is a representation of groups and sub groups and is made up of many views). During this process I was looking at how long certain code segments take to execute and I have found that a call to addsubview is taking between 10 and 20 milliseconds most of the time. The subview I was looking at is a disclosure button. I am wondering if this method is just inherently slow or is their some other factor at work here? Is the time it takes to add the subview dependent on the complexity of the subview or is that not a factor? Also, is there some other method that can be used to add a subview that might be faster?

• Tab widget example not running

  I'm trying to reproduce the tabwidget example (http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-tabwidget.html). I'm not really sure what's the problem, I got no errors while compiling, but i cannot see the application on the emulators screen. • Android: making a custom ListView independent of adapters ?

  I am adding a local database as a cache to a remote web service in my android application to answer queries. I used ArrayAdapters before for list views to display the results from the web service. Now with a database cache, the result could be either a Cursor(from database) or a List(from web), which means the adapter can be CursorAdapter or ArrayAdapter too. Creating two adapters for one query doesn't seem to be a good idea. So I am wondering what would be the best way to refactor my current code to add this database feature? Thanks,

• iPhone UITableView populating variable rows sections from flat array

  I thought that would be very common and easy iPhone App. In the main app I connect to database, retrieve values from database (NSDate converted to NSString)n and put into single array. The in one of the views I populate UITableView with elements from the array. UITableView is grouped (sections). I step through array to discover number of sections (change section if new day). How do I retrieve correct element of array in cellForRowAtIndexPath? IndexPath.section and IndexPath.row seem useless as row starts count from zero for each section. If number of rows in each section was the same it would have been easy: [arryData objectAtIndex:(indexPath.row)+indexPath.section*[tblMatchesView numberOfRowsInSection:indexPath.section]]; But number of rows in each section varies... :-)

• Ruby on Rails: How best to escape a string in a model?

  I want my application to sanitize html on input rather than on display, so that the fields saved into the database are sanitized. I've been doing this with strip_tags, and it was working great. However, this has the downside that it means the user can't input anything that's bracketed with < and . How can I tell Rails in the model to securely escape tags before saving them to the database? I'd like to not have to call h on the sanitized fields again before using them in the views.

• Code is exectuting but the view is not loading when called form a function?

  I have a viewBased application with the viewController class mainView. In it I am loading various views(different nibs) depending upon certain actions that I do. I have added a popoverController with a barbutton in the mainView. Its intialized with a tableviewController class named popClass. When I select certain row in the popover, I want the view in my mainView to load someother view(as I do when i do certain actions). For that I have written a function in mainView Controller class and is calling it from the popOver class. Function and the lines of code are executing but nothing is happening. Even the log lines are printed but no action takes place. What is the problem? OR is there anyother way to make the view change in mainView by using the popover?

• C++ Thread Safe Integer

  Hello everyone, I have currently created a C++ class for a thread safe integer which simply stores an integer privately and has public get a set functions which use a boost::mutex to ensure that only one change at a time can be applied to the integer. Is this the most efficient way to do it, I have been informed that mutexes are quite resource intensive? The class is used a lot, very rapidly so it could well be a bottleneck... Googleing C++ Thread Safe Integer returns unclear views and oppinions on the thread safety of integer operations on different architectures. Some say that a 32bit int on a 32bit arch is safe, but 64 on 32 isn't due to 'alignment' Others say it is compiler/OS specific (which I don't doubt). I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on 32 bit machines, some have dual cores and so threads may be executed simultaneously on different cores in some cases and I am using GCC 4.4's g++ compiler.   I currently have a type that I inject into my controllers that's used for getting and setting session data. I use this so that I can obtain relevant session information as _sessionData.Username rather than using Session["username"]. I'd like to use this session information across all of my views and would previously have done this by making the SessionData members static instead of injecting the SessionData class into my controller. I want to avoid using static members as well as having to pass the object to the view in each controller. What patterns best suit this type of scenario? What do you do to solve this same problem?

• Migrating a simple application from Application Delegate to ViewController Class

  Hi Frst of all wanted to send out a huge thanks for the great feedback and support. I have a simple application working, right now simply loads a sequence of images and alows the user to step thru the images by clicking a button. All of my logic is in my Application Delegate class, with the image loading, initialization of UIImage Views etc happening in my applicationDidFinishLaunching method. My next step is to migrate as much as possible all of the logic from this class to a ViewController, to take advantage of the extra functionality etc in viewcontrollers. All my images and imageViews are initialized like the following in my applicationDidFinishLaunching. img = [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:[[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@image1.jpg" ofType:nil]]; imgView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:img]; How would I migrate this to a ViewController based application? Where would I put all of the logic currently in my applicationDidFinishLaunching method, or for loading of images, is it necessary to only load them here? Any feedback, tips, suggestions appreciated.

• Your Django Development process/steps (Step by Step)

  I want to know step by step process of how folks develop on Django here. I have seen that whenever I try to create a website in Django, I always get confused amongst: DB Schema/models.py UI/Template Structure Login module urls.py views.py How do you approach this? I may have missed something. You do not need to elaborate everything, just stepwise what you do. If you do two things at the same time (or side-by-side), that would also be helpful to mention.
