• Installing a new Motherboard in a HP xw6200 case

  I have a HP xw6200 Workstation, that is rather long in the tooth, and with 2 physical CPUs, it is quite inefficient. So, the plan was to upgrade the internals. Nothing special: AMD Athlon II X4 640 ASUS M4A78KT-M LE (mATX) 2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM. 3p under my £150 budget The issues: The pin connector for the front panel isn't a good fit, but I can trim it to size. The PSU has a 8-Pin Power connector, unsurprisingly, the new board has a 4 pin socket. The pins do line up, but I would have to cut it in half to fit. Finally, due to the weight of heat-sinks, they are screwed directly into the case. It turns out that these screws also lock the motherboard in place. As to remove it, you remove the heat-sinks, slide the motherboard across and lift it out. I tested the new board for fit, and while it slots in fine, it's not secure. There is nowhere to screw the board down, it is just held in place with plastic standoffs. The only idea I had, was to wedging something between the side of the motherboard and part of the case. Any suggestions?

• Korean characters not appearing in Korean Windows XP computer

  I am using a Korean software (with a partial English interface) in a Korean Version of Windows XP SP 3 However, in parts of the software, even when I change the interface to Korean, Korean letters show up as random characters, as shown here: This is happening at others parts of the software as well, and I am not sure what is the difference between the places where this is happening, and places where this is not happening. For example, a command button where Korean letters are showing up properly is shown below: This software is a video conferencing software and has a chat feature as well. When I type into the chat box, i can see the Korean letters appear properly at my side, but when I press Enter and send the message, it changes into random characters as shown above in the chat box. What could be the issue here? Could it be a missing font in my computer? Since this is a Korean Windows installation I was hoping everything would work properly by default. What can be done here? EDIT 1: I asked some other people who are using this software, and they think that the problem is at my end, and playing around with the Regional and Language Settings might solve the problem. Also, they suggested I install all the language packs related to Korean display. But it looks like all the language packs have been installed, and my location is set to Korea in Regional and Language Settings in Control Panel, and I still have this problem. Also, I have had similar problems with displaying Korean on an English Windows XP computer. This answer suggested some solutions, but I still do not quite understand exactly what I have to do (at that time I had not fixed the problem, as I later on changed the computer). If I follow that answer, what fonts exactly do I need to install?

• Youtube has no voice but the music continues just fine?

  PC CONFIG: gigabyte EP45C UD3R with the realtek HD onboard 4gb dual channel Qcore 2.83ghz When i watch to videos on youtube now the voice some times is in static and some times so low that you can hear it while the sound continues just fine... For example if can hear to things like guitar or a train etc but the voice of whoever is speaking is gone or very low or pure static when watching the videos. I know some videos have a really great quality and some are HD 1080p so this was something not expected to happen. I can aswell play videos on my WMP11 just fine i have ccc-p installed also tried k-lite, both on the latest stable avaiable. I havent tried anything else related to flash but something is either wrong with my drivers or youtube. I have installed the latest drivers to make sure they are up-to-date but this didnt help either. What i have tried so far: removed the audio drivers and re-installed remove any codec pack i had and re-installed k-lite, test, didnt worked remove any codec pack i had and re-installed cccp, test, didnt worked checked the control panel sound configurations, tried chaging to phone stereo, to 5.1 which is what my headphone is. checked the realtek manager, tried changing the sound channels from 2CH to 6CH to reflect my headphone, didnt work. rebooted after every change of the above tries. tried chrome, firefox and internet explorer with the same results didnt w

• What is the name of the this DOS font? Where and how to add it? Why is there a 1 pixel gap?

  So basically I somehow stepped into this webpage: www.braindamage.vg And the first thing that hit me hard was the lovely DOS fonts, so naturally I wanted to get them into my IDE badly. Opened the html source file and CSS file to find the font name: @font-face { font-family: 'Perfect DOS VGA 437'; src: url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.eot'); } @font-face { font-family: 'Perfect DOS VGA 437'; src: url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.svg#dos') format("svg"), url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.ttf') format ('truetype'); } So I download the font, add it using Control Panel - Fonts. But once I start using it (notepad, MSVS 2008 & MSVS2010) I notice that it looks slightly off: It seems like there's 1 extra pixel between each character. How it should look: What is causing it and how to fix this? Is it the windows XP? (i have disabled font smoothing) Or is there something wrong with the font file?

• quad sli with gtx 690 not working

  I have two cards GTX 690 (dual core). I did the Sli successfully. Nvidia control panel acknowledges the two cards as quad Sli. However, the problem is that Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate is showing me the graph memory size as 4 GB while it is supposed to be 8 GB because of the Sli. Also the benchmark from all software is giving me a very low score compared to some other guy's benchmark on YouTube. It gives me a big headache. Does anyone know why this is happening? If so, how can I get Windows 7 to recognize all 8 GB of memory? Thanks for your help in advance. My computer specifications: (Processor: Intel Core i7-3930k @3.2GHz(12CPUs))--- (Memory: 65536 MB Ram 1866 MHz)-- (OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit)-- (OCZ 240GB as SSD PCIe drive for booting and storage disk)-- (DirextX version: DirectX 11)-- (VGA Card: 2 X EVGA GTX 690 Dual GPU. • newbie: Allow domain users to change power-savings settings

  I've just recently installed SMS 2011 on a server and added several computers to it's domain. Now I've noticed that I cannot change power settings (even when logged in as user who is in Domain Administrator role, let's call it Admin for future reference). After some googling I ended up adding Admin to the local administrators group using Group Policy Management Editor (as I have no experience in server administration I'm not sure I did it right: I went to Policy Management, selected Forest: xxxxx - Domains - xxxxx - Group Policy Objects - Windows SBS Client - Windows 7 and Windows Vista Policy - go to Settings tab on the right and right-click on anything and select Edit to go to Group Policy Mangement Editor - User Configuration - Preferences - Control Panel Settings - Local Users and Groups - right-click on it and select New - Local Group, then set Action to "Update", Group Name to "Administrators (built-in)", and added Admin to Members). After that I was able to change the power-savings settings on client computers(when logged in as Admin). Now the question: what should I do to allow any domain user to change this settings? Notice, I do not want to force some predefined power plan to all computers, I want to set it up so that any domain user on any client computer would be able to select a different power plan and to make any adjustments to the selected one. • How to delete massive files via ftp or ssh?

  On my servers, one of the scripts that I have been using keeps creating the blank files at root and I haven't been noticed for more than over 6 months and now total files are created more than 500,000 files. I cannot access that directory through control panel because there were too many files and I can only access with ftp. Even with ftp, ftp truncated the files by 8000 each. So I have to keep deleting 8000 each. I tried to ask my host to delete it for me but they says they can't since it's the liability issues. So what I want to know is how can i delete all of those 500,000 files through ftp? Since it's shared hosting, I don't have SSH access either. Hosting provider says I can request the SSH access but need to verify it and their office closed until next week. So I am stuck with ftp for now. So please kindly let me know how can i delete massive files via ftp ? And incase, if i can get the ssh access, please kindly let me know how can i delete the files via ssh with efficient ways ? • How does everyone set up AWS for PHP with a git workflow while worrying about distributing EC2?

  Hello, I have been looking for something like heroku but for php, and after much frustration (and almost finding what I need, but not quite) we decided to just go with AWS without any other abstraction. We are using PHP 5.3 (and CakePHP 1.3), and are currently using git. Ubuntu seems like the easiest way to get both of those on there and we will most likely use that. We aren't really going worry about outgoing email. We are using smtp through gmail, but will most likely switch to some other service eventually. I had 3 questions: 1) I have been looking at Zend Server, and I am not quite sure how that is more beneficial than xampp. Perhaps it is not? 2) I suppose to make the application scale we would need multiple instances of some ec2 ami. Then just duplicate it and such. The question then becomes how do we make sure all EC2 instances are up to date? 3) I understand the concept of load balancing to some degree. I understand that in 1 region you select a bunch of servers and have it load balance across them. The question then becomes well how about world wide? How do I make it so that traffic is directed to the correct ec2 server? I have heard of route 53, and tried signing up for that, but nothing appears in my control panel. Also perhaps it is just a DNS thing with my domain registrar? AHHH... some tutorial would be helpful!

• Windows 7: Dual Monitor Issue

  I have a Dell laptop with a docking station and two external monitors hooked up. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Originally, the two monitors were the same - Dell 1908FP. I have replaced one of them with an HP LA2405. I have set the HP 24" (1920 x 1200 connected via DVI port) as montior 1 and extended to use the Dell 19" (12080 x 1024 connected via VGA port) as monitor 2. I have set my power plan so that when the laptop is plugged in, it will turn the monitors off after 10 minutes, but it will not put my laptop to sleep. However, now that I have the HP monitor, when I unlock my laptop and the monitors come back on, all my windows are resized and shifted to the top left corner of the HP monitor as if they had been resized for display on the smaller Dell monitor. A co-worker has the exact same laptop and monitor configuration but doesn't experience this issue, so I figure there's some configuration that's different but we can't find it. I haven't been able to find any mention of a similar problem doing an internet search, but I'm not really sure what terms to use in my search. Anybody have any suggestions as to what may be causing the issue? OS setting? Monitor setting? EDIT: My laptop is using the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel/drivers.

• Fedora Core 6 Migration

  I am at a loss as to what I should to for this server. I need it to run php5.3 and corresponding version of mysql. I received a client today through work that is using Fedora core 6 running 10 very small websites on some very hodge podge setup. My original idea was just upgrade to php5.3. I have yum (installed 3.0.8) reconfigured for the fedora archive. The latest version of php it allows is 5.1.8. I am still relatively new to server setups and am nervous about wiping their server to upgrade it. Since it is about 6-8 years old I'm not sure if it will even support the newest version of fedora. The server specs are: Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.5.4 Operating system Linux 2.6.9-023stab048.4-smp CPU GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU E5335 @ 2.00GHz (10gb disk space and 1gb of memory). I use fedora for my personal server so I was a little familiar with it. I haven't done anything too extravagant. Is there a way I can escape this nightmare with installing php5.3 or do I need to migrate these sites to a new server?

• Windows 7 VPN only works if I connect it to itself first

  Just so you have some detail, VPN request are port forwarded from a linksys router hosting the global static IP (to the world) to the windows 7 machine. The ports have been added to the OK list. I have the incoming VPN connection setup on win 7 but the only way it will work from anywhere outside the physical machine is if I connect from itself to itself first. For example, let's say my internal static IP is 10.0.0.50 and incoming VPN server connection IP is 10.0.0.80 (both on the same machine). I can't connect via VPN from anywhere unless I first VPN from the machines .50 address back to itself on the .80 address. Once I do that, I can connect form anywhere, even my phone. It's as if once the machine reboots it thinks it should block requests on .80 until .50 connects first. BitDefender antivirus/firewall is loaded (windows firewall is off) I don't see anywhere to exclude ports in the BitDefender control panel. Maybe this initial connection opens the ports and tags them as safe because the initial request came from the same machine? Any thoughts? It's driving me nuts and I'm sick of having to drive half way across town over to the server, try to get building access and do the initial connection. Please help

• Nvidia GTX 660m crashes games

  I just recently bought a Lenovo y580 with both HD intel graphics and an Nvidia GTX 660m. It works great except for one thing: playing games. Every time I load a game, either with Steam or Games for Windows Live, games will end up crashing. I've already talked with lenovo tech support and they couldn't help other than send my new laptop for repair which would take 7 days. So before I do that I thought I'd ask around. These are the games I've tested and what happens when they load: Civilization V: Game loads fine but once it gets loaded to the game, there's noticeable "tearing" popping up and certain things flash. Within a minute of this, the game crashes. Does the same thing regardless if Vsync is on or off. Total War Shogun2: Game gets to the menu screen. The background of the menu screen shows what is expected - slideshow of in-game environments rendered on high settings (this is expected). However, within 2 seconds of the menu loading up it crashes. Age of Empires 3 (Non-steam): This game is several years old so it should work on this brand new laptop fine. However the results are similar to that of Civilization V. Noticeable "Tearing" and after a few seconds it'll freeze/crash. I've done tests on all these games with both the latest stable Nvidia driver 285 as well as the nightly build 307. In addition, Nvidia control panel is set on using the dedicated graphics card for all programs. So is there anything I can do to fix this or will I have to send it back for a week to tech support?

• Why can I not edit, delete directories inside of this directory

  Hello there, First, I thought this was PHP related, but maybe it isn't. My original post, which may be irrelevant now is located at the bottom. The problem is I have a directory : /articles/. In it are 10 sub directories. I have been changing the permissions lately, but now it seems all the permissions of the parent folder, sub-folders and files are either chmod 755 or 777. I cannot move, delete or edit files inside of this parent directory or sub-directories with my FTP-client. I can however edit, delete, create new files and directories and change them with PHP-functions without problems. What may the problem be? OLD POST. Ignore everything below this line: If I create a directory with mkdir(), or create a file with fopen(), file_put_contents() or SimpleXMLElement::asXML(), I am unable to access the file with my FTP-client or c-Panel File Manager. If I try to delete or edit them, I get errors. Dreamweaver suggests it is a permission problem or a network or filesystem fault (but I've set the permissions with chmod() to 0777, and when I check the cPanel, it confirms chmod 777. I also tried to use fileowner() and the function returns int(99), the same owner as those files that I could access with my FTP-client. It seems files and directories created with PHP can only be modified or be deleted with PHP. I thought this must be a server setup related issue, so I write it here. I am on a shared server, and I have no idea about setting up servers. EDIT: It seems the problem is different. I cannot move files with FTP-client to the parent, or sub-directories either. This problem may not be PHP related, then. It seems the problem applies to any directory, regardless of whether it was created by PHP. EDIT 2: The parent directory has chmod 755.   I'm trying to set an environment variable to point to the directory into which I have extracted the latest version of OpenCV, following the instructions in OpenCV's Installation in Windows tutorial. Here's my elevated command line listing. C:\>cd C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11>cd ../../../.. C:\>setx -m OPENCV_DIR C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 SUCCESS: Specified value was saved. C:\>cd %OPENCV_DIR% The system cannot find the path specified. C:\>echo %OPENCV_DIR% %OPENCV_DIR% Firstly I change directory to C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 to ensure that it exists. After that is successful I change directory back to the root of the C drive. Then I use setx to make OPENCV_DIR a system wide environment variable with value the C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 path I verified in step 1. Noting the success of setx in the previous step I now change directory using the new environment variable. But it fails with the message The system cannot find the path specified. If I try to echo the value of the OPENCV_DIR environment variable it appears not to be set. Looking in the control panel the OPENCV_DIR environment variable looks correctly set: What's wrong? Why is the variable not working? Am I evoking it incorrectly when I use it to change directory or echo its value?

• Driver corruption when deploying Dell Touchpad Drivers (with software) during imaging process

  We're an sccm shop, and use it to deploy Windows. When deploying Dell laptops (multiple models), the touchpad drivers seem install properly, but the software doesn't. The resulting problem is that when the touchpad is pressed on occasion, the mouse pointer will 'jump' to certain points on the screen. A possible symptom of this problem/visible sign is if the touchpad icon isn't in the system tray. The software is in the control panel, but when opened part of the gui is pixelated, indicating botched install maybe? The manual resolution to this, is to go into device manager and uninstall the driver with the option to uninstall all driver software. After a restart, the driver and software is apparently reinstalled, and from there works as expected. Obviously this partially defeats the purpose of a zero touch deployment. If anyone knows why this is and/or a possible workaround, those answers would be valid as well. Barring that, I want to find a way to deploy the driver and touchpad software in an unattended way, so that it can be conditionally installing during the imaging process. To be honest I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this, I suppose I could try drvinst.exe to install the driver, but finding out why this fails initially would keep me from spinning my wheels.

  I have an old system with these specs: Motherboard: Via P4x266a (with AGP 4x) CPU: P4 1,7 Ghz Memory: 1152 MB DDR SDRAM Graphics card: Voodoo 3 2000 16 MB PSU: 300 Watt It also has 1 dvd-rom, 1 dvd-rw, 2 hard drives (all 4 connected via molex) , 1 sounblaster sound card and 1 ethernet card (both connected via pci). OS: XP Pro Recently I bought Asus 9250 128 MB AGP to replace voodoo.Wnen I switch on the pc the initial screens (until after the xp logo) sometimes are distorted with blurred colours.When XP are loaded there is some flickering but the rest are ok.XP can't recognize the card seeing it as just a VGA adapter.I have downloaded the latest xp drivers from ATI website and installed them.Then after the restart everything is ok (no distorted image or blurring) until after the xp logo.After this the monitor turns off while the pc is still running.I have tried many drivers but the problem persists (of course I removed the voodoo drivers before from the display adapter properties).Only once I have managed to enter XP (after changing BIOS features for graphics card from 256 MB to 128 MB) but the drivers on the control panel had an exclamation mark (ati 9250!) and below them ati 9250 secondary without ! under the display adapter tab and the ATI catalyst program said that it couldn;t find the card.That was the opnly time I went beyond the xp logo.Now the monitor auto switcheS off. So, what do you think? 1)Is this a broken card? 2)Is it the drivers of the card? 3)Is it PSU fault? 4)Anything else? Thanks for your help and excuse my english!

• can't change wallpaper real time regedit commands

  i'm a first time 'SuperUser' poster .. what i want is to programatically change Desktop Wallpaper every few hours .. i'm using a batch file (.bat) and don't want to use other languages or programs, just the pre-installed stuffs with Windows XP .. i've already made my script that will modify values in the Registry reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v Wallpaper /d "C:\Pictures\picture1.jpg" but it's not taking effect real time even with this command: RUNDLL32.EXE USER32.DLL,UpdatePerUserSystemParameters ,1 ,True need to reboot first to take effect. if i'm going to use Display Properties, it'll show at once. what i've noticed is that changes will take effect real time if it's a .bmp file and not for .jpg images. Second option is to convert JPG to 24-bit BMP files (to look exactly the same, but will triple the file size), but i'm hoping a better way .. i've already googled things but no avail.. i hope you (the helpful reader) can post any .bat or even vbs script to change Desktop Wallpaper instantly with JPG pictures .. hoping there's an answer without installing other apps or scripts ..

• Plesk command working in manual script, not in cronjob

  Hi, In order to install a hosting plan, I use Plesk's commands in SSH as specified in their official guide. When typed directly in SSH (Putty), it works perfectly. The line is as follows with obviously values hard coded when in CLI: /usr/local/psa/bin/domain --create '.$url.' -owner mynamehere -ip '.IP_SERVER_PLESK.' -status enabled -hosting true -hst_type phys -login '.$ftp_user.' -passwd '.$ftp_pw.' -www false -php true -php_safe_mode false -hard_quota 100M I then put that request in a php script that does other things after hosting is installed. Now for the weird part: when calling that script from CLI it also works fine, I do a ./myscript.php and it installs the hosting, then sends emails etc. However after I create a cronjob to have that same script called regularly, then the Plesk command fails. The cronjob is started in Plesk as */15 * * * * /usr/bin/php /home/scripts/myscript.php and it works fine for everything BUT the Plesk hosting install, that returns "Unable to read Control Panel configuration file" and therefore does not install the domain hosting. Still this is the same script that I call manually ! On that server are the PHP used to call a cronjob and the one used in CLI different ? What do I miss, help greatly appreciated ! Regards.

• What's wrong with closing applications on Windows Mobile?

  As far as I can tell, this annoys the crap out of people that do notice and (at max) gives no real benefit to people who don't notice: Why did Microsoft decide to make the "X" on Windows Mobile (or CE before that) not close, but only hide the application, and thus keep cluttering up your memory? WM wants you to go to the Control Panel - Memory and "Do you really want to" shut down the app. Pretty much every WM application I've seen that did not come from Microsoft has a "Quit" menu choice. The number of task managers out there that let you quit programs is larger than the count of emails from African bank managers that want me to take care of some millions of bucks that belonged to a deceased customer of theirs. My new HTC even comes with a close-able (not closeable, though) task manager pre-installed. But still today, Word Mobile just wants to hide, not be closed. I don't want to get a "That's M$hit, get used to it" answer; I really want to know: What in the world is the reason for this decision, and even more, for still sticking with it?

• please take a look at my server's ram usage

  Hi, i am a noob with servers. I have a centos5.5 vps with 512mb ram. My goal is to have it host just one magento store. I've installed Magento on the server without any control panel, by just installing lamp myself and whatever php extensions were necessary to get Magento to install. As soon as i visit my magento store, suddenly the ram on the vps is almost completely used, with only about 100mb left. Please see this screenshot of htop taken after just myself visited the website. http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/1944/screenouv.png As you can see there's only around 100mb left. Is that normal? I'm wondering if i might have done something stupid with the server that makes it very resource hungry. I installed apache from the centos base repo, php version 5.3 from the ius repository and mysql 5.1 also from ius repo. I haven't changed any of the default config files for any of these except to make memory_minimum 256 in php.ini. Is there anything i can do to make more ram free? I'm clueless but i see each Apache daemon is using 8% of available ram, and AFAIK each visitor needs one Apache daemon. So i would run out of ram with just a handful of visitors. • computer randomly restarting. both in game and out of game

  first my specs are. AMD Phenom II x4 955 processor 3.2ghz 20gb ddr3 ram 4Gb Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 850w Corsair tx850w psu Gigabyte ud3 mobo Windows 7 professional I recently uprgraded my vid card to gtx770 and upgraded my psu to the 850w thats in it now. i did a reformat with the installation of the new gpu and psu and started fresh and only have a couple programs installed (diablo3, nvidia control panel, wow, and steam). all drivers are up to date and everything is hooked up correctly. the problem is it will randomly shut down. no blue screen. just turns itself straight off and reboots after a couple seconds. occasionally i will have to unplug the power cable from the psu for a few minutes then reconnect and it will start up. it seems pretty random. sometimes it does it when my pc is just sitting there on the home screen. and sometimes it does it during games. and sometimes it doesnt do it for days at a time. i noticed the psu felt hot so i put an extra fan blowing straight onto both the psu and gpu and neither feel overly hot after it shuts down now. could it just be that it is a psu problem. the psu was taken from another machine but wasnt having this problem in that machine. i have seen a few articles online about gtx770 doing the same thing. but i havent found any answers or solutions. any help will be appreciated. im sure the 850w is enough to power my machine, im just stumped and ran out of ideas to fix it. i have even returned the video card for another thinking it might have been an issue with that particular card, but still gettin the same problem.

  How to turn of the display in Windows 8 without locking or making computer go to sleep ? The problem is that when I enable ‘Turn off display after x minutes’ feature from control panel, the device goes into sleep after ‘x’ minutes. It seems that both the options – turn off display/put computer to sleep are connected. It devices goes automatically to sleep mode as soon as the display is turned off. So, is there any method to turn off the display of the device without it going into sleep mode ? Someone wrote in the microsoft forum " The whole key to this problem seems to be the "Turn off the Display" setting. If you have that set to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc...the computer will go to sleep one minute after you lock the screen. With this setting set to "Never", it doesn't do it. So something is wrong there." I want to turnoff the display but don't want to lock the device. Is that also possible ? Thanks

• Is is possible to guide installation of new programs using %ProgramFiles%? [closed]

  The purpose of this is to have the default "program files" (32 and 64 bit) folders located under an arbitrary path, possibly on a drive separate from where windows lives. Initially I thought that this may be done using a system environment variable through the dialog located under Control Panel - System - Advanced - Environment Variables. These variables turned out to be set in the registry under the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. However, one particular entry is confusing. The ProgramFilesPath entry seems to point at an environment variable that is not defined under the same registry key. I could assume that the difference between ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesPath is none and that one of them exists as a backwards compatibility, but having some legitimate resource from Microsoft to look at would be better than guessing. After receiving some worrying feedback about having both 32 and 64bit applications in the same folder, I have decided not to ask about the feasibility of this to avoid discussion. The real question is if the desired effect is possible to attain by "cutting into" the windows setup process and modifying those registry entries as early as possible. These settings should be system wide and not only for software installed by a particular user. If this is indeed something that can be done, I wonder if there are any subtle pitfalls. Programs that expect libraries and other resources to be in default locations can probably be dealt with using the same technique as employed by Windows to re-map the "Documents and Settings" folders and the like (i.e. breaking legacy applications is not real concern).

  Basically, my unmanaged VPS provider doesn't supply me with nameserver which I can use with my domain provider to route domain to my server. As I've been told: You need to configure the custom DNS server in your VPS, to setup the custom nameservers. Please refer the following article that would help: http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch18_:_Configuring_DNS Once you configure the nameserver records, please update the domain registrar panel with the custom nameserver details. I tried to follow this guide but it seems to be a bit outdated, and I am complete newb with non-windows systems. I also scanned the google for other articles which could help me with this problem but, alas, nothing I found was of any value for someone who doesn't know this stuff better than his own pockets. I realize this is quite a complex thing to do, but maybe there is some way to automate it? Or a better solution, like a paid service which would act as my nameservers (this one would be interesting), or even hoped to find some company which "rents" people to do stuff like that. Blah, any help will be appreciated, I am at a complete loss here. I can follow some of these steps, but then I soon find that half of the files which are mentioned in the article are somehow not existing anywhere on the server which confuses me, and once we get to the point of creating Zone I can't really decipher all the things written there :/. As per title, my system is Debian 5.0.
