• Issue While uploading a image to share point 2010 picture library.

  I was trying to upload a image to my picture library using sharepoint client object model. I Used the code from the below blog to upload a file to my picture library. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sridhara/archive/2010/03/12/uploading-files-using-client-object-model-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx The image got uploaded sucessfully. But when we took the relative url to update in a different list, we were getting empty image symbol. After a lot of analysis we figured out that the issue was with the file we uploaded. An image file which is of jpeg quality was uploaded to an application with giff extension. Try this. Copy a JPG file from net and save it to your file system. Change the extension of the file from jpg to giff. When you change the file extension the image quality remains same but it will open in picture viewers. Upload the file to your picture library. Once uploaded you will get the file listed as thumbail in your picture library. Click on the thumbnail image it will open up a page showing a larger image with file details. Now click either on the image or the file name hyper link, it will open up an empty page with default no image symbol. I wasted a lot of time on this figuring out the issue, so thought of sharing here. Hope this helps some one.

• SOA Starting Point: Methods for Service Identification and Definition

  As more and more companies start to incorporate a Service Oriented Architectural design approach into their existing enterprise systems, it creates the need for a standardized integration technology. One common technology used by companies is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). An ESB, as defined by Progress Software, connects and mediates all communications and interactions between services. In essence an ESB is a form of middleware that allows services to communicate with one another regardless of framework, environment, or location. With the emergence of ESB, a new emphasis is now being placed on approaches that can be used to determine what Web services should be built. In addition, what order should these services be built? In May 2011, SOA Magazine published an article that identified 10 common methods for identifying and defining services. SOA’s Ten Common Methods for Service Identification and Definition: Business Process Decomposition Business Functions Business Entity Objects Ownership and Responsibility Goal-Driven Component-Based Existing Supply (Bottom-Up) Front-Office Application Usage Analysis Infrastructure Non-Functional Requirements  Each of these methods provides various pros and cons in regards to their use within the design process. I personally feel that during a design process, multiple methodologies should be used in order to accurately define a design for a system or enterprise system. Personally, I like to create a custom cocktail derived from combining these methodologies in order to ensure that my design fits with the project’s and business’s needs while still following development standards and guidelines. • What's the best way to generate an NPC's face using web technologies?

  I'm in the process of creating a web app. I have many randomly-generated non-player characters in a database. I can pull a lot of information about them - their height, weight, down to eye color, hair color, and hair style. For this, I am solely interested in generating a graphical representation of the face. Currently the information is displayed with text in the nicest way possible, but I believe it's worth generating these faces for a more... human experience. Problem is, I'm not artist. I wouldn't mind commissioning an artist for this system, but I wouldn't know where to start. Were it 2007, I'd naturally think to myself that using Flash would be the best choice. I'd love to see "breathing" simulated. However, since Flash is on its way out, I'm not sure of a solid solution. With a previous game, I simply used layered .pngs to represent various aspects of the player's body: their armor, the face, the skin color. However, these solutions weren't very dynamic and felt very amateur. I can't go deep into this project feeling like that's an inferior way to present these faces, and I'm certain there's a better way. Can anyone give some suggestion on how to pull this off well?

• Why doesn't libxml2 support XPath 2.0?

  Libxml2 is the faster, stable and most popular "open DOM engine"... And the "XML C parser and toolkit of Gnome". The initial release of Libxml2 was September 1999, 13 years ago. XPath v1.0 was also released at 1999. XPath v2.0 became a recommendation on January 2007, 6 years ago. We can suppose that the Libxml2 community have time and people to develop a XPath2... So, what is the problem? Why doesn't libxml2 (or a "libxml2 fork" or an "experimental lib"!) support XPath 2.0? Some raised hypotheses to discussion at answers, Because Libxml2 community (and Gnome community) dislikes and have no motivation to develop something to XPath2 or xQuery. 1.1. XPath2 needs (by mathematical proof) a very heavy parser, much slower, etc. that is not suitable to real-world Libxml2 applications. 1.2. Other "ideologic" dislikes/motivations. Because it is written with C, and for XPath2 is better to develop with C++. Because the above hypothesis of "Libxml2 community have time and people" is false. Because XPath2 became stable in 2010 with its "Second Edition" release, and ~2.5 years is not (?) enough time.

• Working with Reporting Services Filters–Part 5: OR Logic

  When you combine multiple filters, Reporting Services uses AND logic. Once upon a time, there was actually a drop-down list for selecting AND or OR between filters which was very confusing to people because often it was grayed out. Now that selection is gone, but no matter. It wouldn’t help us solve the problem that I want to describe today. As with many problems, Reporting Services gives us more than one way to apply OR logic in a filter. If I want a filter to include this value OR that value for the same field, one approach is to set up the filter is to use the IN operator as I explained in Part 1 of this series. But what if I want to base the filter on two different fields? I  need a different solution. Using the AdventureWorksDW2008R2 database, I have a report that lists product sales: Let’s say that I want to filter this report to show only products that are Bikes (a category) OR products for which sales were greater than $1,000 in a year. If I set up the filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [Category] Text = Bikes [SalesAmount]   > 1000 Then AND logic is used which means that both conditions must be true. That’s not the result I want. Instead, I need to set up the filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value =Fields!EnglishProductCategoryName.Value = "Bikes" OR Fields!SalesAmount.Value > 1000 Boolean = =True The OR logic needs to be part of the expression so that it can return a Boolean value that we test against the Value. Notice that I have used =True rather than True for the value. The filtered report appears below. Any non-bike product appears only if the total sales exceed $1,000, whereas Bikes appear regardless of sales. • Another Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 mail flow issue

  During a migration recently, we came across another internal mail routing issue.  The symptoms were identical to my previous post about Exchange internal mail routing.  Mail was flowing from 2010 to 2003, from 2010 to the internet, but not from 2003 to 2010.   I went through the normal check list looking at permissions, DNS, and the routing group connectors.  I verified that both servers listed in the routing group connectors were the routing master in their respective routing groups through the 2003 ESM.  I also verified that inheritable permissions were enabled for the Exchange 2003 server object in the schema.  No luck with either.   For my previous post about this issue in which inheritable permissions were the culprit: Exchange 2010, Exchange 2003 Mail Flow issue   And for Routing Group issues: Exchange 2007 Routing Group Connector Mayhem   I finally enabled logging on the SMTP virtual server on Exchange 2003 and the Default Receive Connector on 2010 and sent a few test e-mails where I found 2003 was having issues authenticating to 2010.  By default 2003 uses Exchange Server Authentication to communicate to 2010. The exact error was: 4.7.0 Temporary Authentication Failure which was found in the SMTP logs on the Exchange 2003 side   After scouring based on this error, I found the solution:   The Access this computer from the network user rights in the local computer policy on the Exchange 2010 server were changed from the default.  The network administrator had modified the Default Domain policy and changed this user right assignment to only list Domain Users.   The fix was to clear this setting in the Default Domain policy,  force gpupdate to refresh the group policy settings, then ensure the appropriate users and groups were listed.   This immediately fixed the problem and the Exchange 2003 server was able to route mail to the Exchange 2010 mailboxes.   The default user rights assignments for Access this computer from the network On Workstations and Servers: Administrators Backup Operators Power Users Users Everyone On Domain Controllers: Administrators Authenticated Users Everyone More can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc740196(WS.10).aspx

• Use CompiledQuery.Compile to improve LINQ to SQL performance

  After reading DLinq (Linq to SQL) Performance and in particular Part 4  I had a few questions. If CompiledQuery.Compile gives so much benefits, why not to do it for all Linq To Sql queries? Is any essential disadvantages of compiling all select queries? What are conditions, when compiling makes whose performance, for how much percentage? World be good to have default on application config level or on DBML level to specify are all select queries to be compiled? And the same questions about Entity Framework CompiledQuery Class. However in comments I’ve found answer  of the author ricom 6 Jul 2007 3:08 AM Compiling the query makes it durable. There is no need for this, nor is there any desire, unless you intend to run that same query many times. SQL provides regular select statements, prepared select statements, and stored procedures for a reason.  Linq now has analogs. Also from 10 Tips to Improve your LINQ to SQL Application Performance   If you are using CompiledQuery make sure that you are using it more than once as it is more costly than normal querying for the first time. The resulting function coming as a CompiledQuery is an object, having the SQL statement and the delegate to apply it.  And your delegate has the ability to replace the variables (or parameters) in the resulting query. However I feel that many developers are not informed enough about benefits of Compile. I think that tools like FxCop and Resharper should check the queries  and suggest if compiling is recommended.   I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

• Working with Reporting Services Filters–Part 5: OR Logic

  When you combine multiple filters, Reporting Services uses AND logic. Once upon a time, there was actually a drop-down list for selecting AND or OR between filters which was very confusing to people because often it was grayed out. Now that selection is gone, but no matter. It wouldn’t help us solve the problem that I want to describe today. As with many problems, Reporting Services gives us more than one way to apply OR logic in a filter. If I want a filter to include this value OR that value for the same field, one approach is to set up the filter is to use the IN operator as I explained in Part 1 of this series. But what if I want to base the filter on two different fields? I  need a different solution. Using the AdventureWorksDW2008R2 database, I have a report that lists product sales: Let’s say that I want to filter this report to show only products that are Bikes (a category) OR products for which sales were greater than $1,000 in a year. If I set up the filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [Category] Text = Bikes [SalesAmount]   > 1000 Then AND logic is used which means that both conditions must be true. That’s not the result I want. Instead, I need to set up the filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value =Fields!EnglishProductCategoryName.Value = "Bikes" OR Fields!SalesAmount.Value > 1000 Boolean = =True The OR logic needs to be part of the expression so that it can return a Boolean value that we test against the Value. Notice that I have used =True rather than True for the value. The filtered report appears below. Any non-bike product appears only if the total sales exceed $1,000, whereas Bikes appear regardless of sales. (You can’t see it in this screenshot, but Mountain-400-W Silver, 38 has sales of $923 in 2007 but gets included because it is in the Bikes category.)

If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. • How to decide how backward-compatible my new Mac OS X application should be?

  I'm currently contemplating writing an OS X version of my Windows software. My Windows application still supports Windows XP, and I know that if I drop support for it now, our customers will cry bloody murder. I'm new to OS X development, and as I learn the technology, APIs, etc., I realized that if I'm going to provide comparable level of backward compatibility (e.g. down to OS X 10.5), I would not be able to use many things that look very useful and relevant in my case (ARC, XPC communications, many others). This is quite different from Windows, in my opinion, where there are very little changed between Windows XP and Windows 7 from desktop application developer's standpoint. So, on one hand, it seems like a complete waste to stick to 2007 or 2009-level API in 2012. On the other hand, according to NetMarketShare report and Stat Owl report Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 market share is still 11% and 35%-40% respectively. However, I'm not sure if these older OS users are my target audience (buyers of software utilities) if they didn't bother to upgrade their OS... My question: Are there any other reasons I should take into account when deciding if I target 10.5 or 10.6 or 10.7 for a new application?

• I can't program because the code I am using uses old coding styles. Is this normal to programmers? [closed]

  I'm in my first real job as programmer, but I can't solve any problems because of the coding style used. The code here: Does not have comments Does not have functions (50, 100, 200, 300 or more lines executed in sequence) Uses a lot of if statements with a lot of paths Has variables that make no sense (eg.: cf_cfop, CF_Natop, lnom, r_procod) Uses an old language (Visual FoxPro 8 from 2002), but there are new releases from 2007. I feel like I have gone back to 1970. Is it normal for a programmer familiar with OOP, clean-code, design patterns, etc. to have trouble with coding in this old-fashion way? EDIT: All the answers are very good. For my (un)hope, appears that there are a lot of this kind of code bases around the world. A point mentioned to all answers is refactor the code. Yeah, I really like to do it. In my personal project, I always do this, but... I can't refactor the code. Programmers are only allowed to change the files in the task that they are designed for. Every change in old code must be keep commented in the code (even with Subversion as version control), plus meta informations (date, programmer, task) related to that change (this became a mess, there are code with 3 used lines and 50 old lines commented). I'm thinking that is not only a code problem, but a management of software development problem.

  I was working on a data view web part recently and i had  to filter the data based on dates.Since the data source was web services i couldn't use  the Offset which i blogged about earlier.When using web services to pull data in sharepoint designer you would have to use xpath.So for example this is the soap that populates the rows<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row/>But you would need to add some predicate [] and filter the date nodes.So you can do something like this (marked in red)<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row[ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@ows_Created),1033,'yyyyMMdd') &gt;= ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(substring-after($fd,'#')),1033,'yyyyMMdd')]"/>For the filtering to work you need to have the date formatted  above as yyyyMMdd.One more thing you must have noticed is the $fd variable.This variable is created by me creating a calculated column in the list so something like this [Created]-2So basically that the xpath is doing is get me data only when the Created date  is greater than or equal to the Created date -2 which is 2 date less than the created date.Also not that when using web services in sharepoint designer and try to use the default filtering you won't get to see greater tha or less than in the option list comparison.:(Hope this helps.

• Can't find new.h - getting gcc-4.2 on Quantal?

  I've been trying to compile the Valve Source SDK (2007) on my machine, but I keep running into the same error: In file included from ../public/tier1/interface.h:50:0, from ../utils/serverplugin_sample/serverplugin_empty.cpp:13: ../public/tier0/platform.h:46:17: new.h: No such file or directory I'm pretty new to C++ coding and compiling, but using apt-file search I tried to use every single suggestion for the required files in the Makefile (libstdc++.a and libgcc_eh.a), and none worked. I then found a note in the Makefile saying gcc 4.2.2 is recommended - I assume the older code won't work with the newer version, but gcc-4.2 is unavailable in 12.10. So my question/s is/are: If my assumption is right - how do I get gcc 4.2.2 on Quantal? If my assumption is wrong - what else could be the problem here? • Is there a way to save MS Word document as HTML w/o the ms proprietary stuff?

  So normally I wouldn't use this feature ("Save as Web Page") but I have large documents from clients they just want put on their site as HTML, and formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time. I have tried "save as webpage" in Word 2007, but it produces all sorts of bad stuff. To wit: <b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'> <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> as well as a large block of XML formatting info: <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:DocumentProperties> <o:Subject> </o:Subject> <o:Author> </o:Author> <o:Keywords> </o:Keywords> ... As I said, formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time, but the way MS exports currently just has too much cruft. Is there a way to export MS Word doc as html without all this?

• OpenXML error “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.”

  From time to time I ear some people saying their new web application supports data export to Excel format. So far so good … but they don’t tell the all story … in fact almost all the times what is happening is they are exporting data to a Comma-Separated file or simply exporting GridView rendered HTML to an xls file. Ok … it works but it’s not something I would be proud of. So … yesterday I decided to take a look at the Office Open XML File Formats Specification (Microsoft Office 2007+ format) based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. I start by installing Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office and playing with some samples. Then I decided to try it on a more complex web application and the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” message start happening. Google show us that many people suffer from the same and it seems there are many reasons that can trigger this message. Some are related to the process itself, others with encodings or even styling. Well, none solved my problem and I had to dig … well not that much, I simply change the output file extension to zip and extract the zip content. Then I did the same to the output file from my first sample, compare both zip contents with SourceGear DiffMerge and found that my problem was Culture related. Yes, my complex application sets the Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture  to a non-English culture. For sample purposes I was simply using the ToString method to convert numbers and dates to a string representation but forgot that XML is culture invariant and thus using a decimal separator other than “.” will result in a deserialization problem. I solve the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” by using Convert.ToString(object, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) method instead of the ToString method. Hope this can help someone.
