• Performance statistics hooks

  Lets be honest, most software that developers produce has quite modest performance requirements. E.g. Systems perhaps serving 100's of requests per second, if that. But lets assume for a moment (or even dream) that you where perhaps involved in the "next big thing" (whatever that means) and you wanted to put some sort of performance statistics logging in place to help you out when all those users come flying in. Performance statistics logging, how would you approach this requirement? Perhaps you would use some sort of generic framework for this? Or roll your own solution? What would you log? How granular? Or would you not even bother putting anything in place and rather deal with this issue when it actually became an issue? It would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on this topic.

• locking database record for editing

  I have a SQL 2008 DB and an asp.net frontend. I would like to implement a lock when a user is currently editing a record but unsure of which is the best approach. My idea is to have a isLocked column for the records and it gets set to true when a user pulls that record, meaning all other users have read only access until the first user finishes the editing. However, what if the session times out and he/she never saves/updates the record, the record will remain with isLocked = true, meaning others cannot edit it, right? How can I implement some sort of session time out and have isLocked be automatically set to false when the session times out (or after a predefined period) Should this be implemented on the asp.net side or the SQL side?

• What simple methods are there to wrap a c++ based object model with a COM interface

  I have a pre-existing c++ object model which represents the business layer tier of an application. I want to be able to expose the object model to applications written in other languages i.e vbscript, VB, javascript etc. I believe the best way of doing this is to wrap the business objects with a COM layer. What fast and effective methods are there for doing this. Any advice, links to practical "How to" documentation would be very much appreciated. Because I'm starting a bounty on this , here's a few extra guidelines for potential bounty hunters :- 1)I've decided on an ATL approach 2)I'm now specifically looking for links to really good "how to and quickly" documentation on wrapping a pre-existing c++ object model to make it useable by a scripting language like javascript 3) Something with small working examples showing me what code needs to be added to what files, e.g what goes into the cpp , idl and hpp/h etc. It' must include an example I can compile test and change to get a better understanding.

  Groovy adds each() and a number of other methods to java.lang.Object. I can't figure out how to use the Groovy metaclass to dynamically replace the default each() on a Java class. I can see how to add new methods: MyJavaClass.metaClass.myNewMethod = { closure -> /* custom logic */ } new MyJavaClass().myNewMethod { item -> println item } // runs custom logic But it seems the same approach doesn't work when overriding methods: MyJavaClass.metaClass.each = { closure -> /* custom logic */ } new MyJavaClass().each { item -> println item } // runs Object.each() What am I doing wrong? • Checking server load with PHP and taking appropriate action

  Hi, I'm creating a project in which a server receives operations from clients to apply to a local server document. The server and client both share the same document and therefore each message the client sends contains an MD5 hash, which the server compares to after generating its own hash to ensure the server and client documents are synchronized. My question is, if the server is overloaded, could I somehow detect this in PHP, which would in turn let me decide whether I want to execute the hash generation function or not? Perhaps in the scenario defined, this is not a perfect use-case, but I'm interested in this approach in general.

• Formula for producing a CGRect for a UIScrollView, that displays a UIImage in scaled to fit way

  Hi I am loading in images with varying sizes and putting them in UIScrollViews, all the images are larger than the UIScrollView. The user can scroll and zoom as they please, but initially I would like for the image to be centered and scaled so the largest side of the image aligns with the edge of the scrollView, i.e. if the picture is in landscape I would like to size and scale it so that the left and right side goes all the way to the edge of the UIScrollVIew and vice versa I found a formula in a utility function in the Programming guide but it does not quite fit my needs. My approach is to use: CGrect initialPos = ? [self.scrollView zoomToRect:initialPos animated:YES]; I know the size of my scrollView and the size of my image, what I need to figure out is the scale and CGRect to apply to the scrollView to center and size my image.   Hello S.O! Yeah, I know I post a lot of questions, but thats because I either need assurance that I am doing it right, what I am doing wrong, or if I am totally clueless, and cant find anything in the documentation. Anyways, I am trying to check for duplicate nodes. Here is how I would want to do it: Loop thru my nodes, and compare each single node's text (record), but if I got many nodes, wouldnt that be too time and memory consuming?   Hi All, My site is in asp.net 3.5 and C#. I am sending link to my user through mail, now I want to send each user a specific URL. so instead of sending the clear text I want to send link with encrypted string URL, which I will decrypt on my home page. Like instead of www.mysite.aspx\mypage?userId=12 i'll send www.mysite.aspx\mypage?UserId=)@kasd12 and the same i'll decrypt on my page so that I'll get the userId = 12.   Hi there, I am a little confused as to how to approach this SQL query. I have two takes (equal number of records), and I would like to return a column with which is the division between the two. In other words, here is my not-working-correctly query: SELECT( (SELECT v FROM Table1) / (SELECT DotProduct FROM Table2) ); How would I do this? All I want it a column where each row equals the same row in Table1 divided by the same row in Table2. The resulting table should have the same number of rows, but I am getting something with a lot more rows than the original two tables. I am at a complete loss. Any advice?

• What is the best way to migrate documents into Sharepoint (MOSS) 2007?

  I'm working with a customer that needs to migrate documents from their current document management system (not Sharepoint) into Sharepoint MOSS 2007 retaining document history and metadata. I've written a proof of concept using the Sharepoint web services and that looks promising, but the snag so far seems to be programmatically setting the created date/time and user. The webservices allow the fields to be set but implicitly override them to be the currently logged in user + date/time. For obvious reasons, I need to be able to keep the original created date/time and user on migration. Does anyone know the best way to approach this problem?

We have the ideas written down like 100's of them (yes we are choosing best and easy among them first). Mine friend do the layout design and arranging things , and mine part is coding and server management. The little problem i am facing is lack of experience in planing a project .What i do is , i just start the code straight away and along with code I make DB , Like when i need a table i make it. I know this is very bad approach for a medium sized project. Here at stackoverflow i saw lots of experienced coders . Need to learn a lot from you guys :) . • Preventing Netbeans JAXB generation trashing classes

  I'm developing a SOAP service using JAX-WS and JAXB under Netbeans 6.8, and getting a little frustrated with Netbeans trashing my work every time the XSD schema my JAXB bindings are based upon changes. To elaborate, the IDE automatically generates classes bound to the schema, which can then be (un)marshalled from/to XML using JAXB. To these classes I've added extra methods to (for example) convert to and from separate classes designed to be persisted to database with JPA. The problem is that whenever the schema changes and I rebuild, these classes are regenerated, and all my custom methods are deleted. I can manually replace them by copy-pasting from a backup file, but that is rather time-consuming and tedious. As I'm using an iterative design approach, the schema is changing rather frequently and I'm wasting an awful lot of time whenever it does, simply to reinstate my previous code. While the IDE automatically regenerating the JAXB-bound classes is entirely reasonable and I don't mean to imply otherwise, I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas as to how to prevent my extra work having to be manually reinstated every time my schema changes?

• Standalone jQuery "touch" method?

  So, I'm looking to implement the ability for a plugin I wrote to read a touch "swipe" from a touch-capable internet device, like an iPhone, iPad or android. Is there anything out there? I'm not looking for something as full as jQtouch, though was considering reverse engineering the code I would need out of it. Any suggestions on the best way to approach this? A snippet of code already available? Addendum: I realize in hindsight the solution won't strictly be jQuery, as I'm pretty sure there aren't any built-in methods to handle this. I would expect standard Javascript to find itself in the answer.

For example, suppose low is 1 and high is 20 then the answer is 20, because all the numbers in this range are of distinct digit sets. If suppose low is 1 and high is 21, then the answer is 20, because 12 and 21 have same digit set i.e.1, 2. For example, given a time period of 5 days, what is the maximum number of times user 111 walked the dog? The most obvious solution would be to start at some zero point and move forward each day, summing up 5 day periods along the way, then taking the maximum total out of all the 5 day windows. the approach seems incredibly costly however. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Maximum execution time : 3 seconds Numbers only till 100,000 If the splitting is NOT possible, then return -1 What i did : using the sieve of eratosthenes, i calculated all prime numbers till the specified number. looked up a concept called goldbach conjecture which expresses an even number as the summation of 2 primes. However, i am stuck beyond that. Can anyone help me on this one as to what approach u might take ? The sieve of eratosthenes is taking 2 seconds to count primes till 100,000 :(((

• Android: Using MediaRecorder to crop an existing audio file?

  Hi, I'd like to take an existing mp3 file located on an SD card and arbitrarily crop it (e.g. crop from 0:12 to 1:14 in a 3 minute song). The only class that I've seen that seems remotely relevant to do this is the MediaRecorder class. My 'hope' would be to "record" an existing file like this: MediaRecorder recorder = new MediaRecorder(); recorder.setAudioSource(###some magical way of specifying an existing file??###); But this obviously doesn't work (setAudioSource() takes an int and seems to default to the phone's microphone). Is there a class or an approach that can be used to crop audio on the phone itself? TKS!!

  I have a fairly involved LispWorks Common Lisp module that sits atop some .NET modules via RDNZL. It has come up that I need to expose some of its functionality to some other .NET applications, and I'm not sure the best (shortest) way to approach this without re-writing the module in C#. I know there are a few CLR Lisp implementations but most seem unmaintained or incomplete and there are many things that cannot be trivially re-written in Scheme. Is there any facility that exposes the opposite of what RDNZL enables (.NET - Common Lisp)? Can I use RDNZL to deliver a DLL that accepts .NET objects?

  I am having problems finding any other information than the docs for how to save the tab order for my UITabBarController, so that the user's customization is saved for next app launch. I have searched online, but have been unable to find any blog posts or articles that goes through the proper code for doing this. I realize I have to use the delegate methods for the UITabBarController (didEndCustomizingViewControllers:) but I am not sure how I best approach persistance in terms of saving the state of the order the user wants the tabs in. Can someone post some code, point me in the right direction or perhaps you have a link for something saved? :) Thanks

• What's a better way to display a handle for resizing a view on iPhone / iPad?

  I want to display a handle at the corners of a UIView that can be used to resize the view. How can I display the handles floating on the top of everything else and still have a connection to and be in sync with a view? The solution I implemented before looks like this: I put the view into another view that shows the handles on top of the corners. The problem with this approach is that the handles add extra space to the original view's size. Since Apple recommends at least 40 x 40 px for the size of a button, it is not very little space and also goes beyond the visible bounds of the original view. Another problem is that the original view has to be encapsulated in this 'helper view' object and thus becomes a part of something although it really is the main component.

  Hello, I've been thinking for a while on what to store at the Project Settings, objects or numeric/string representations of those objects to set a rule and avoid thinking on this at the future so I want to take the best approach. On one side storing object representations grants you that what is stored is valid and saves you from doing conversions each time you access them. You only need objects with the attribute. At the other side storing the numeric/string representation of an object eases the editing of the setting because at the end the user will be entering numeric or string information. What do you do with this issue?

• Soql query to get all related contacts of an account in an opportunity

  i have SOQL query which queries for some records based on a where condition. select id, name,account.name ... <other fields> from opportunity where eventname__c='Test Event' i also need to get the related contact details for the account in the opportunity. ie i need to add the email ids of contact who all are part of the account in the opportunity. For each opportunity, i need to get all the contacts emailids who are associated with the account in opportunity. I cant really figure out how to approach this. referring the documentation i can get the contact info of a account using the query SELECT Name, ( SELECT LastName FROM Contacts ) FROM Account How can i use this along with opportunity?
