• How to convert a MSSQL database (including procedures, functions and triggers) to a firebird databas

  I am considering migrating to Firebird. To have a "quick start" approach I downloaded the trial of a conversion tool (DBConvert) and tried it. I just picked up a random tool, this tool doesn't convert procedures, functions and triggers (I don't think it is a limit of the trial since there is not an explicit reference to sp, sf and triggers in the link above). Anyway by trying that tool I had the message: "The DB cannot be converted succesfully because some FK names are too long." This is because in some tables I have FK whose description is 32 chars. Is this a real firebird limit or it is possible to overcome it somehow (of course renaming the FK is an extreme option because it is extra work)? Anyway how to convert a MS SQL DB fully to FIREBIRD? Is there a valid tool? Did someone succed in a conversion of non trivial databases?

• LINQ-to-SQL vs stored procedures?

  I took a look at the "Beginner's Guide to LINQ" post here on StackOverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8050/beginners-guide-to-linq), but had a follow-up question: We're about to ramp up a new project where nearly all of our database op's will be fairly simple data retrievals (there's another segment of the project which already writes the data). Most of our other projects up to this point make use of stored procedures for such things. However, I'd like to leverage LINQ-to-SQL if it makes more sense. So, the question is this: For simple data retrievals, which approach is better, LINQ-to-SQL or stored procs? Any specific pro's or con's? Thanks.

• Extracting a Rails application into a plugin or engine

  I have a Rails 2.3 application which I would like to extract into a plugin, or engine. The application has user authentication, and basic cms capabilities supported by ancestry plugin. I want to extract the logic for the application into a plugin/engine so that I can use this code for future projects, with a different "skin" or "theme" if required. I'm not entirely sure I actually understand the difference between plugin and engine concepts, so that would be a good first point. What is the best approach, are there any good starting points, links, explanations, examples that I should follow. Also, with the release of R3 to consider, is there anything that I should be aware of for that, with regards to plugins etc. I am going to start off by watching Ryan's http://railscasts.com/episodes/149-rails-engines but obviously thats over a year old now, so one of the challenges I'm faced with is finding the most up to date and relevant information on this subject. All tips and help gratefully received.

• Using Gradle with an existing Android project

  I have an existing Android project with the following structure: - ProjectName -- AndroidManifest.xml -- local.properties -- project.properties -- assets -- libs (containing all jars) -- modules (containing all library projects my project depends on) -- res -- src ---- com/namespace/projectname (all my classes including main activity are here) I haven't been using any specific build system to build my project other than the one provided by default with the Android Studio IDE (though the project was originally created with IntelliJ CE. I would like to use Gradle with the android plugin and do some work on my build process. I have tried several configurations in order to achieve this and have failed to complete a successful build every time. What's the recommended approach in this scenario? should I change my project structure? or is it possible to configure gradle using the existing structure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Handling multiple exceptions

  Hi there, I have written a class which loads configuration objects of my application and keeps track of them so that I can easily write out changes or reload the whole configuration at once with a single method call. However, each configuration object might potentially throw an exception when doing IO, yet I do not want those errors to cancel the overall process so that the other objects are still given a chance to reload/write. Therefore I collect all exceptions which are thrown while iterating over the objects and store them in a super-exception, which is thrown after the loop, since each exception must still be handled and someone has to be notified of what exactly went wrong. However, that approach looks a bit odd to me. Someone out there with a cleaner solution?   Which package from CPAN should I use to send mail? Sometime the timtowtdi approach is very tiring. For me, especially when it comes to package selection. So all I want is to send email, potentially HTML emails. Between Mail-Sendmail, Mail-Sender, NET-SMTP (by the way - not available in PPM), Mail-SendEasy, and the 80 or so other packages that have 'Mail' in their package name - which one should I choose? And while in this subject, what is your general apprach to choose the "canonical" package for a jog. I.e. the package that "everybody is using". Is there any rating or popularity billboard somewhere?

• WPF MenuItem Content "Name"...

  Hi, I have a LOT of MenuItem(s), and I want to be able to change their "Content" so that it displays in the program. When I load up the program, their "Content Name" is set in a Setter I created.. but the only problem is that I have almost a hundred MenuItem objects, and I need their display names in the program to be different (not the setter's default). I could just create over 100 different "Setter"'s and change one line in them.. but that is very time consuming. Is there a simpler approach? I want to be able to do this in the XAML where I am declaring them. Is there a way to do this? I've been searching and trying different attempts, but nothing so far.. perhaps someone knows? Thanks

  Hi SO community! I am drawing graphs into a WinForms Picturebox. Now I am searching for a possibility to 'duplicate' a line (an array of points), so that the two resulting lines are positioned a fixed distance away from the original one. Like in this picture, I have the red line and want to get the black ones: I thought about just moving the line a few pixels up/right/up-right, but that leads to strange overlapping lines. Is there any other approach that does what I want? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I also want to create a table called 'pages_published' which has ofcourse also a nested set. Once i create a record in table 'pages' at some point i want to publish this to the 'pages_published)-table. How do make sure the sort order and the level in the structure keeps ok.   I'm trying to create a word ladder program in python. I'd like to generate words that are similar to a given word. In c++ or java, I would go through each valid index in the original string, and replace it with each letter in the english alphabet, and see if the result is a valid word. for example (pseudocode) for (int i = 0; i < word.length(); i++) { for (every character c in the alphabet) { change the letter of word at index i to be c. if the result is a valid word, store it in a list of similar words } } . However, this doesn't seem like a very "python" way of doing things. How would I approach this problem in python?

• Spawning Process Never Finishes on ASP.NET Page

  The code below spawns the process and sits forever, never finishing. It doesn't matter what process I run. If I use delegates it doesn't work either. It just hangs up in my dev and on the test enviornment. Also, if I use Shell with Wait it does the same thing. If I set wait to false in either approach it works just fine. It's ASP.NET 2.0 VB.NET DotNetNuke 4.0 on Windows Server 2003. I can't even phathom why this would hang up. UPDATE: It causes the CPU to throttle up but it's not running anything. It's like there's something weird going on in the threading. • How do i style a JSON feed in my view?

  My rails app gets the following JSON feed from mixcloud and sticks the results into my index page At the moment when I do this, the entire contents of my feed are displayed unformatted in one big blob of scary looking text (without the curly JSON brackets) I only want to display specific values from the feed in the view. From the feed in question lets say for simplicity that I just wanted to display all values with a key of "url" In case I'm doing something wrong here's my code: # podcast controller def index # I'm using a class method to get the feed @feed = Podcast.feed end # podcast model def self.feed feed = JSON.parse(open("http://api.mixcloud.com/alivefrommaryhill/feed").read) end # index.html.haml .feed = @feed I can't figure out how to style the results and display only certain items from the feed. • What to Learn: Rails 1.2.4 -> Rails 3

  I've recently convinced my management that our outdated version of Rails is slowing us down enough to warrant an upgrade. The approach we're taking is to start a fresh project with current technology rather than a painful upgrade. Our requirements for the project have changed and this will be much easier. The biggest problem is actually that my knowledge of Rails is out of date. I've dealt only with Rails 1.2.4 while the rest of the world has moved on long ago. What topics have I missed by being buried in my work instead of keeping up with the current Rails fashion? I'm hesitant to dig through blogs at random because I'm not sure how much has changed between the intervening versions of Rails. It's no use to learn Rails 2.1-2.3 specific stuff that is no longer useful for Rails 3.

• WinForms / .Net interactive world map - how?

  In a CD collection program, I have each artist's country of origin stored in the main database and want to display a map of the world which: Colour-codes each country depending on the number of CDs by artists in that country Allows clicking on each country to filter a list of CDs to only ones by artists in that country This is a heavily simplified version of what I'm trying to do, but if I can at least get this far the rest should be easy enough to figure out. So far the closest thing I've found to what I'm trying to do is here: http://www.synergetechsolutions.com/blog/analytics-world-map-control Ideally I don't want to be embedding Flash in my program though, and the only other solutions I've found all involve SVG which I haven't managed to get working in practice outside of a web browser control (and I DEFINITELY don't want to be embedding a browser in the forms). Something in pure managed code and either GDI+ or WPF would be preferable. Are there any existing components that would get me started, or can anyone suggest how to approach it from scratch?

  A number of holidays move around from year to year. For example, in Canada Victoria day (aka the May two-four weekend) is the Monday before May 25th, or Thanksgiving is the 2nd Monday of October (in Canada). • Rails plugin for generating dynamic / ajax crud interfaces compatible with Rails 3 beta?

  Anyone know of some good gems or plugins to create dynamic / ajax crud interfaces for Rails 3 projects? I know active scaffold was popular before and it's been awhile since I have used it / any other gems similar to this (I usually just write it myself). I like the direction that the formtastic gem (http://github.com/justinfrench/formtastic) is headed and wonder what else people are combining with it. Also I like the generators approach that Ryan Bates uses and he appears to be making updates for Rails 3. Anything else I am missing here? (I am also open to gems not compatible with Rails 3 too I guess, I can always make a contribution and try to help them get to the next phase. ;)) PS - Really stackoverflow, only one hyperlink?? lame.

• Can Tomcat provide seperate (or HTTPS only) sessions for HTTPS requests?

  I have a web application which contains both secure (SSL) and non-secure pages. A user can login to the site and must appear logged-in in both the SSL and non-SSL areas. (NB. SSL isn't implemented via Tomcat, but via Apache HTTPD servers which sit in front of Tomcat - so Tomcat has no SSL configuration.) The logged-in state is currently maintained via a servlet session (using Tomcat's vanilla session management). The obvious issue with this approach is that the JSESSIONID cookie is transported over both HTTP and HTTPS connections, meaning that it's potentially possible to intercept it and hijack the session. Are there any solutions to this without rolling our own session management (i.e. does Tomcat cater for this situation)? I'm prepared to implement our own session management, but don't want to reinvent something that may already be supported.

• Rails migrations: Undo default setting for a column

I have the problem, that I have an migration in Rails that sets up a default setting for a column, like this example: def self.up add_column :column_name, :bought_at, :datetime, :default => Time.now end Suppose, I like to drop that default settings in a later migration, how do I do that with using rails migrations? My current workaround is the execution of a custom sql command in the rails migration, like this: def self.up execute 'alter table column_name alter bought_at drop default' end But I don't like this approach, because I am now dependent on how the underlying database is interpreting this command. In case of a change of the database this query perhaps might not work anymore and the migration would be broken. So, is there a way to express the undo of a default setting for a column in rails? Implementing it is not difficult, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a function in Core or Contrib. There is a zip namespace in Core, but it is described as providing access to the Zipper functional technique, which does not appear to be what I am after. Is there an equivalent function for combining 2 or more lists, in this way, in Core? If there is not, is it because there is an idiomatic approach that renders the function unneeded?
