  • Can my machine run Ubuntu( kubuntu | xubuntu | mint ) 12.04 WELL?

    I have a 9 year old computer packing the hardware listed below. My question is, can I run 12.04 ( Ubuntu, Kubuntu, MINT or Xubuntu ) WELL? I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and I upgraded to 12.04 by going through each release via the update manager: 11.04 - 11.10 -12.04 During the installation process for 12.04 I saw an error message that there was an error installing and setting up part of the kernel. Later, when I tried installing a package in synaptic, I got another error message mentioning the kernel. When I rebooted, I got told somehting about my video and graphics was not configured properly and that I would have to do it manually ( like I know ). It gave me the option to enter the system in low graphics mode, but it just hanged. I had an old livecd of Xubuntu 10.10 around so I used that to get into my computer and copy data over to an external hard drive. I think tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 from the livecd, with the option "download updates" checked. The install process moved along a bit, then halted for about 5 hours. I rebooted my machine and tried the Xubuntu 10.10 installer WITHOUT the option to "download updates". The install completed in about 15 minutes. So, all of that is making me wonder if there is someting about 12.04 that does not like my hardware. I'm willing to try again, but only if I know I will not have to spend hours just to get to an error message and a hosed up system like I did last night. I also think I have a lot more RAM than is being reported in the output below. I had extra ram installed last year. I'm not good with the command line readouts, but there seems like there should be a lot more. I wasn't thrilled with Unity. I am willing to try Kubuntu 12.04. Will I run into the same problems? What is the highest version of a *ubuntu can I upgrade to? I want to improve myself, so I have to start tackling some issues I've been neglecting like this and trying Git instead of being stuck on SVN. What's a good way to learn TDD? I'll probably be using Eclipse to program in Java. I've heard of JUnit, but I don't know if there's anything else I should consider.

I've tried numerous fixes, such as reinstalling through ad/remove software, copying the .net folder over from a clean windows 7 install, and running the .net cleanup tool.     im new on ubuntu , i intalled it ( dual booted with windows 7) i was customizing it, but when i tried to run compiz it said that missing glx or something like that in the screen, i realized that the driver that i was not using wasnt the gefroce on so i went to nvidia downloaded the correct version for my graphic ( geforce gtm 525m) when y run the .run file it told me that i was using xserver and that i cant install this driver with the xserver installed. i search for information of how to remove or disable xserver i found one. in this web site --http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-tiphow-to-removeinstall-and-reconfigure-xorg-without-reinstalling-ubuntu.html when i run the command , after that i tried to instal the geforce on, doesnt work so i remember windows that you must reboot after a driver unintallation or intallation so i reboot, them ubuntu doesnto load, it show the ubuntu whit the five dots like or 1-2 sec and them i get a black screen ( not the red-black of ubutntu ) so why i should do. i dont want to re install i dont have a cd and my usb is a little damaged so please if you could help me

    I have started to write card game applications. Some model classes: CardSuit, CardValue, Card Deck, IDeckCreator, RegularDeckCreator, DoubleDeckCreator Board Hand and some game classes: Turn, TurnHandler IPlayer, ComputerPlayer, HumanPlayer IAttackStrategy, SimpleAttachStrategy, IDefenceStrategy, SimpleDefenceStrategy GameData, Game are already written. My idea is to create engine, where two computer players could play game and then later I could add UI part. Already for some time I'm reading about Test Driven Development (TDD) and I have idea to start writing application from scratch, as currently I have tendency to write not needed code, which seems usable in future. Also code doesn't have any tests and it is hard to add them now. Seems that TDD could improve all these issue - minimum of needed code, good test coverage and also could help to come to right application design. But I have one issue - I can't decide from where to start TDD? Should I start from bottom - Card related classes or somewhere on top - Game, TurnHandler, ... ? With which class you would start? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests? (use the card game you know the best) I would like to start TDD with your help and then continue on my own!

  • Synchronizing issue: I want the main thread to be run before another thread but it sometimes doesn´t

    I have done my own small concurrency framework (just for learning purposes) inspired by the java.util.concurrency package. This is about the Callable/Future mechanism. My code below is the whole one and is compilable and very easy to understand. My problem is that sometimes I run into a deadlock where the first thread (the main thread) awaits for a signal from the other thread. But then the other thread has already notified the main thread before the main thread went into waiting state, so the main thread cannot wake up. FutureTask.get() should always be run before FutureTask.run() but sometimes the run() method (which is called by new thread) runs before the get() method (which is called by main thread). I don´t know how I can prevent that. This is a pseudo code of how I want the two threads to be run. //From main thread: Executor.submit().get() (in get() the main thread waits for new thread to notify) ->submit() calls Executor.execute(FutureTask object) -> execute() starts new thread -> new thread shall notify `main thread` I cannot understand how the new thread can start up and run faster than the main thread that actually starts the new thread.   • nautilus will not start, no right click menu, apps will not run due to 64bit libicui18n.so.48 overwritten with 32bit, ubuntu 12.04

    yeah so i broke my system trying to install support for 32bit apps. Somehow the 32bit set of libicu*.so.48 files replaced my 64bit files and now nothing works. I know what the problem is and how to fix it , what i need is some help. I need some kind soul running a 64bit install of Ubuntu 12.04 to simply go into their /usr/lib dir and copy the files that have the form libicu*.so.48* (8 of them i think, maybe 16 i dunno how many there is supposed to be since they were overwritten). Anyway if you could put those files in an archive, zip or tar preferred and then email/share the link. I was able to get these files installed but they're from the latest edition of fedora and while i can now use my computer , it's not that stable things don't start right smoothly every time like they used to .... and well its a simple ordeal to put things back the way they were if someone wouldn't mind helping out. also any help setting up the libraries related to 32bit apps would be great as well as i apparently screwed that up royally.   • How do I get sound output on HDMI without the need to start X?

    I have a headless machine connected to my sound system, and I am using it to run a music playing daemon that I control over the network. (Among other things) However, I can't seem to be able to have sound come out of my speakers without running X. I am running pulse audio in a system wide instance and my daemon is not running within X. Nevertheless, when my daemon is playing music without me hearing it, I can fix it by running startx in an unrelated session. After X starts, I can hear the sound. The sound disappears again if I kill the X server. Interestingly/annoyingly, the sound also stops after X has been running for a few minutes. This could possibly be because of a screen saver of some sort, but I haven't been able to verify or falsify this theory. So my current workaround is to ssh into the box whenever I want music and startx, and restart it every fifteen minutes or so. I'd like to do better. I have been able to verify the following: Adjustments in alsamixer have no effect on this problem. The relevant output channel is never muted In alsamixer, I can see no difference between when the sound is working and when it isn't Nothing is muted in pactl list There is no difference in the output from pactl list between before starting X and after it's started.     I'm pulling my hair out figuring this out. My startup-config is good, I can view it with a show command. I'm trying to copy it to a tftp server: asa5505# copy startup-config tftp Address or name of remote host []? ipaddress Destination filename [startup-config]? t !! %Error writing tftp://ipaddress/t (Timed out attempting to connect) On my TFTP server (SolarWinds), I get the following: binary, PUT. Started file name: C:\TFTP-Root\t binary, PUT. File Exists, C:\TFTP-Root\t binary, PUT. Deleting Existing File. binary, PUT. Interrupted by client, cause: The process cannot access the file 'C:\TFTP-Root\t' because it is being used by another process I've used tftpd32 with same results. I've tried different servers, even one on the same network as the asa ... same results. It'll create a 0 byte file and never do the dump. What's going on? Everything is working normally except for this.

    I'm trying to create a macro that will copy data from a data entry sheet into a summary sheet. The entry sheet is going to be cleared daily so I can't use a formula just to reference it. I want the user to be able to enter a date, run a macro, and have the macro copy the data from the entry sheet into the cells for the corresponding date on the summary sheet. I've looked around and found bits and pieces of how to do this but I can't put it all together. Update: Thanks to the information below I was able to find some additional data. I have a pretty crude macro that works if the user manually selects the correct cell. Now I just need to figure out how to automatically select the current cell relative to the current date.   • Copy a harddrive from a failed desktop machine using a second working one. [closed]

    Heres the scenario: I have PC-A, an old PC that runs Windows XP but now refuses to boot due to a failed motherboard (or maybe PSU). This PC has a single 80gb IDE drive. I also have PC-B, running Windows Vista, this is working fine. I want to copy all the data off PC-As HDD onto PC-B. To do this I have taken the HDD out of PC-A and connected it as a slave to PC-B. PC-B now boots and sees the additional drive. However, when I attempt to access/copy user folders (i.e. Documents and Settings/[username]/*) I am told that I cannot access the folders due to user permissions. I am doing this under an adminstrator account on PC-B. So the question is, how can I "backup" the data? Preferably without making any changes to the drive contents. The reason for this is that it is possible that PC-A is failing due to a bad PSU, so I intend to replace it before writing off the machine. However I would feel much happier if I had a backup of the data on the HDD.

    I have a virtual Windows machine running on kvm. Presently it has a 90GB raw disk image. I would like to clone this VM without having to keep two copies of the 90GB raw disk image around. It seems like a good approach for doing this is to make two new qcow or qcow2 images based on the original. First I converted the raw image to a qcow2 image: qemu-img convert -O qcow2 basewindowsxp.img basewindowsxp.qcow2 Then I tried creating a new image backed by this: qemu-img create -F qcow2 -f qcow2 -b `pwd`/basewindowsxp.qcow2 windowsxp-1.qcow2 Then I used virt-manager to point the original VM at windowsxp-1.qcow2.
