• Download File from Web C++ (with winsock?)

  I need to download files/read strings from a specified url in C++. I've done some research with this, cURL seems to be the most popular method. Also, I've used it before in PHP. The problem with cURL is that the lib is huge, and my file has to be small. I think you can do it with winsock, but I can't find any simple examples. If you have a simple winsock example, a light cURL/Something else, or anything that could get the job done. I would greatly appreciated. Also, I need this to work with native C++.

• Is it possible to make an online registration process for a course in Google Docs with a cap on registrations?

  I am trying to build an online registration form for an institute I intern at that is running a training programme with multiple courses and hundreds of applicants. I've done registration forms with Google Docs Forms before, but the tricky spot this time round is that I'm trying to put a registration cap on each of the courses. Every person needs to register for one course in every timeslot, and there are seven or so timeslots. However, as seating space in every venue is limited, we would like to cap registrations per course (venue) to 200 per course, after which either a) the applicant will be informed that they need to register for another course in that timeslot if they apply to a full course, or b) ideal case scenario, the option will be greyed out. Is this possible using Google Docs Forms at all? If not, is there a free alternative that might do the job properly?

• Scraping with multiple IP, in java.

  Well basically I have a scraping application. It scrapes around n items per minute. currently i have only one IP. The site i'm scraping allows me 3 connections per IP. I'm thinking about getting another IP. so i'll be able to get 6 connections. in theory i should be able to get n items in 40 seconds, more or less. currently i'm using java (commons-httpcore) to get the job done. I'm not sure if this is java question or an OS question. my machine has IP 1 and IP 2 how do i connect to, say, www.microsoft.com, using IP 1 and using IP2? how can i specify, which ip i want to use to do a connection?

I mean someone who hasn't grown up to realise that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. Someone who has a well-equipped toolbox and then selects the best tool for the job at hand. The person who's knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" • Within SSIS - Is it possible to deploy one package multiple times in the same instance and set diffe

  In my environment my Dev and QA Database Instances are on the same server. I would like to deploy the same package (or different versions of the package) into SSIS and set the filter to select different rows in the Config table. Is this possible? This is SQL 2005. For the sake of this question lets say I have one variable, which is a directory path. I would like to have these variables in the table twice (with different Filters applied (Dev and QA) as below (simplified) . . . Filter / Variable Value / Variable Name Dev / c:\data\dev / FilePath QA / c:\data\qa / FilePath Do I need to apply a change within the settings of the package in SSIS or is it changed on the job step within Agent? Any help would be appreciated.

• why number 9 in kill -9 command in unix?

  I understand it's off topic, I couldn't find anywhere online and I was thinking maybe programming gurus in the community might know this. I usually use kill -9 pid to kill the job. I always wondered the origin of 9. I looked it up online, and it says "9 Means KILL signal that is not catchable or ignorable. In other words it would signal process (some running application) to quit immediately" (source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_kill_-9_do_in_unix_in_its_entirety) But, why 9? and what about the other numbers? is there any historical significance or because of the architecture of Unix? • Why is Harvest being purchased at all?

  Does your work environment use Harvest SCM? I've used this now at two different locations and find it appalling. In one situation I wrote a conversion script so I could use CVS locally and then daily import changes to the Harvest system while I was sleeping. The corp was fanatic about using Harvest, despite 80% of the programmers crying for something different. It was needlessly complicated, slow and heavy. It is now a job requirement for me that Harvest is not in use where I work. Has anyone else used Harvest before? What's your experience? As bad as mine? Did you employ other, different workarounds? Why is this product still purchased today?

  I have some c++ written package. Linux, gcc. I can modify compilation process (change Makefile, flags, etc.), but can not change C++ source code. One runs the package with different parameters, it does a job and exits. How to count: 1) Number of calls of function with specific name? 2) Number of calls of functions with specific signature? 3) Number of calls of functions where one of the parameters is of specific type i.e. std::string (type is specified by signature)? 4) and extra Number of calls of functions of STL objects, i.e. std::string copy constructor? (I mean count a number of calls during the run. ) I thought to do it with GDB, but I found it very tough to do (1) and have not found how to do (2)-(4) at all. All acceptable answers I will write here for humanity.

  I am creating an SDK for a client that includes predefined view controllers. What is the recommended way to package everything (static lib, .xib(s), and .png(s)) for easy use? SDKs that I've used (e.g. Pinch Media) do a good job of just providing a .h and .a file that expose only user accessible functionality and hiding everything else. As I read Apple's documentation, a framework would be ideal but is not permitted on iPhoneOS. Some key requirements: Don't expose source or object internals. Be easy to use & set up. • Reading a bmp file and inverting it in C

  I have an assignment that deals with reading a bmp file into memory, inverts the pixels, and then saves the inverted image to a new file. From this description it seems fairly easy, however I don't think my professor did a great job in explaining the necessary steps to go about doing so. He taught us about fread and fwrite but there is so much more. Can anyone explain the process in going about this problem (I'm no looking for a direct answer just an explanation). • Excel Import how would you do it?

  Ok i have a Excel import written. It uses excel automation to go through all the records and get the job done. BUt how would you do it if you had to do it? Would you use SSIS? Would You use a Dataconnection? I am really confused as to the best way to get this done properly.   Hi, having a raw email as input (i.e. the text between "DATA" and "." sent by a smtp client) I need to extract the mail content (which I know is always text only) as plain text. This means decoding transfer encoding (if any: could be base64 or quoted-printable), merging mutiparts (if any), and stripping headers. I tried various tools that would do that: mewdecode, uudecode, uudeview... I only managed to get this last one to work, but it won't output anything if the mail is not MIME encoded and it stores its output in an unpredictable (nor forceable) filename, so it's hard to use it in a not-interactive shell script. Since this is a pretty common job (every mail client have to do that), it's weird it's so complicated. Do you have some hints? (Actually, forcing uudeview to output in a certain file would be good enough). Thank you!

  Hey all, Working in a team environment, each one of us has put together our own list of SQL statements that we use to help with our day to day job functions. As the case often is, there may be some redundancy with this, and we are often in need of each other's statements. To circumvent this, I'm looking to put together a small app that can be used to store and search for these SQL statements. To begin with, I'm keeping it basic, just storing and searching the statements. This may build out to be the actual execution at some point in the future, but I'm not concerning myself with this at the time. This will be built with PHP and MySQL - Should I store the SQL as text, or is there something that I need to be concerned with?

• bash screen title usage (screen -t "something")

  I was working with screen lately and wanted to use the -t option for it. What's the point of the-t option if the title of the screen does not show anywhere like when using -list or within the screen when it's attached? There is a command CTRL-A double-quote(") to see all active screens, and then it shows the title, but that does not really do the job, because I have to have the screen attached already. I want to read out the title BEFORE attaching any screens, to attach the right one in the first place. Is there a method to use -t in a convenient way? Edit: There is one method: "ctrl-a "" and then "ctrl-a {numberofscreen}". I guess that's the best way to use the screen titles?

• What exactly is GRASP's Controller about?

  What is the idea behind Grasp's Controller pattern? My current interpretation is that sometimes you want to achieve something that needs to use a couple of classes but none of those classes could or has access to the information needed to do it, so you create a new class that does the job, having references to all the needed classes(this is, could be the information expert). Is this a correct view of what Grasp's Controller is about? Generally when googling or SO'ing controller, I just get results about MVC's (and whatnot) which are topics that I don't understand about, so I'd like answers that don't assume I know ASP.NET's MVC or something :( Thanks

  Possible Duplicate: Staying Relevant As a Programmer As you all know in our line of work it is important to keep your self up to date with all of the technical progress that is being made out there. As a developer you have to be quick to grasp new programming languages and programming concepts as well as completely new technologies. I read about a guy who got fired at 50 years of age with tons of experience in some ancient technology and he now couldn't get a job anywhere because his experience wasn't in OOP or some other more modern concept. I don't what to end up in that situation. How do you keep your self up to date? How do you train your self and make sure that you keep your self at the forefront?

• C# method contents validation

  I need to validate the contents of a C# method. I do not care about syntax errors that do not affect the method's scope. I do care about characters that will invalidate parsing of the rest of the code. For example: method() { /* valid comment */ /* <-- bad for (i..) { } for (i..) { <-- bad } I need to validate/fix any non-paired characters. This includeds /* */, { }, and maybe others. How should I go about this? My first thought was Regex, but that clearly isn't going to get the job done.

  Hi I'm a techie with no programing experience. I know html and css, but I'd like to someday be able to make an app for my phone (I have an android) and possibly mobile websites. I made learning a programing language and creating a mobile app a goal for my job, and now my boss would like me to pick a programing language to learn. I found a free open course from MIT (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-fall-2008/) called introduction to computer science. In the course they teach python, but more importantly it seems they teach how to think like a programmer. When I told my boss about the free online course she didn't think that Python was an appropriate language for me to learn. She'd like me to learn a language that is more similar to one used to make Phone apps. Does anyone out there know a better language for me to pick up that would be similar to Android or iPhone's App language. Thank you

• Simplifying CASE WHEN SQL statement

  Im trying to improve the following CASE statement to calculate the difference only once. I do it to avoid negative numbers: SELECT (CASE WHEN ((SELECT 100 - (SELECT COUNT(CustomerId) FROM Customers)) > 0) THEN (SELECT 100 - (SELECT COUNT(CustomerId) FROM Customers)) ELSE (0) END) This not only looks stupid, but also is not thread-safe. I tried the following, but I get an error message "Invalid column name 'diff'." SELECT (CASE WHEN ((SELECT 100 - (SELECT COUNT(CustomerId) FROM Customers) as diff) > 0) THEN (diff) ELSE (0) END) How can this be simplified? Is there an in-built SQL function that already does this job? EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention that the select statement is inside of a view declaration, so I cant declare variables.

  I have three shell script which I am running as below- sh -x script1.sh sh -x script2.sh sh -x script3.sh So each script is executed sequentially one at a time after previous one finished executing. Problem Statement:- Is there any way I can execute all the three above scripts at same time from a single window? I just want to execute script1, script2, script3 at the same time. If you think of some cron JOB scheduling script1 at 3 AM, script2 at 3AM, script3 at 3AM (all three scripts at the same time, simultaneously). That's what I need, I need to execute all the three scripts simultaneously.

• CakePHP ACL use case(s)

  I have got a simple web app in development, i want to establish a couple of user groups; Admin, Doctors & Patients. Each group would have their access restricted to particular controller actions rather than individual content. So for example, Doctors can view patient records (index & view actions), but cannot delete them. Usually i would create a groups model, and assign the various users to a group. And filter in the beforeFilter() method to determine if the user has access. But if ACL can do the job, why right the code, right? Thanks

  hi I'm using a customized backend to upload images on a server. The issue is that the client has a load balanced server so I need to synchronize the upload folders on both server. I'm not able to know which server is executing on the backend. I'm just wondering which is the best way to compare and synchronize the folders on two servers? An FTP script using the windows "cron-job"? A shell script activated by ASP? Aa ASP script that uses FTP commands? thanks
