  • Table naming convention?

    In our manufacturing shop, each Employee hits the time clock every time they change Jobs or Machines (work centers) during their work day. Each record created in the Time Clock app has foreign keys that link the record to: the Employee, the Job, and the Machine which they are about to operate. I’m trying to determine the best name for this table… If I were tempted to call it ClockRecords or TimeClockRecords, why wouldn’t I also consider naming it JobTimeRecords, or why not MachineTimeRecords. Any ideas on a good name?

    Hi, I have a "super" makefile which launches two "sub" make file: libwebcam: @echo -e "\nInvoking libwebcam make." $(MAKE) -C $(TOPDIR)/libwebcam uvcdynctrl: @echo -e "\nInvoking uvcdynctrl make." $(MAKE) -C $(TOPDIR)/uvcdynctrl uvcdynctrl uses libwebcam... I noticed that those two builds are launched as separate threads by make ! Thus sometimes the lib is not available when uvcdynctrl starts being built, and I get errors. By default, make should not launch commands as threads since this is available only through -j (number of jobs) and, according to the make manual, there is no thread by default. I run this on an Ubuntu. Did someone face the same issue ? Apple92

  • Python as your main language. Possible?

    I am currently attending college and the languages that I will 'know' by graduation are C++ and Java. That being said, i am also in the process of teaching myself Python. I know that every programming language has its own pros and cons, but would it be possible to become a python developer out of school? I always have more 'fun' programming in Python than i do in C++ or Java, and I am also in love with Pythons documentation. I know C++ will always be on top in terms of speed, but what would be the benefit of memorizing every javadoc against focusing on Python instead? are there good jobs to be had with Python? edit: also, would it be beneficial for me to look at C# as well? Microsoft is really throwing their support at it so that could be a decent career path as well.

  • What is a good free ODBC viewer?

    At my job I have to work with three different databases. One is a SQL Server 2008, for which I use SQL Server Management Studio, and another is MySQL, for which I use the MySQL tools. The third however is a Cache database that I can only access through a ODBC connection. Currently I use the SLIK software ODBC View tool to access it, but it is severely lacking when compared with the other two tools. Can anyone recommend a good tool for this type of work?

  • Uniquely identifying mobile devices over a network for webforms

    I'm designing a system for mobile devices that can be assigned only to one job at a time. So I need to be able to know which mobile device is being used by accessing it's own unique static IP address or its device ID. I don't want to assign an ID myself for every machine that comes in which is why a static IP would work great. However, in trying to retrieve the client ip address I'm retrieving the wireless router's ip or some other ip which is not the mobile device's ip. I want to store that ip in a table and control which jobs are assigned to it. How can I accomplish this? I've tried the following but I'm getting the wireless ip: var hostEntry = Dns.GetHostEntry(Dns.GetHostName()); var ip = ( from addr in hostEntry.AddressList where addr.AddressFamily.ToString() == "InterNetwork" select addr.ToString() ).FirstOrDefault(); I'd rather not set a cookie if there exists a better alternative.   • As a CS major, should I take more EE courses?

    I have taken enough cs courses to know that I'm not interested in hardware. I'm much more interested in programing for the web. Now, I'm nearing the end of my degree, and I'm presented with the option to take some higher level EE courses than the intro I took freshman year. Are there any real-world-job-boosting reasons I should take more EE course? Any courses in particular that people think would be helpful?
