  • Impressing Potential Employers

    Where I am, I can't afford to get certification. I'm definitely not the best programmer, but I do know my junk. I've been writing software in C++ for over 8 years now and have a very good knowledge of the Win32 API. But when applying for jobs, I get rejected every time I send a resume. I've given my resume to recruitment firms and asked them what they think's wrong with it and they said the only thing they could think of is the fact that I don't have certifications to prove that I know my stuff. But in my resume, I explain my previous work and projects, and also note that upon request they can actually see what I've done. Is there anything that you would suggest that might help others to stop ignoring my resumes? Thank you

  • How effecient is a details table?

    At my job, we have pseudo-standard of creating one table to hold the "standard" information for an entity, and a second table, named like 'TableNameDetails', which holds optional data elements. On average, for every row in the main table will have about 8-10 detail rows in it. My question is: What kind of performance impacts does this have over adding these details as additional nullable columns on the main table?

  • Windows batch/script code to conditionally process based on date value in text file

    I am using Windows XP. The code can be used in a batch file or vbs script. I intend to use Windows scheduler to run the program. I need code to read a date from a text file (could be the only line in the text file or the date could be included in the filename, I control the process that generates the file) The code would then need to evaluate the text file date against the current date to confirm that the text file date is from the prior month. I'm starting to build a process to be able to run 1st-of-the-month jobs once the monthly data has been refreshed. I'm new to building this kind of process using batch/script files.   • How to structure data... Sequential or Hierarchical?

    I'm going through the exercise of building a CMS that will organize a lot of the common documents that my employer generates each time we get a new sales order. Each new sales order gets a 5 digit number (12222,12223,122224, etc...) but internally we have applied a hierarchy to these numbers: + 121XX |--01 |--02 + 122XX |--22 |--23 |--24 In my table for sales orders, is it better to use the 5 digital number as an ID and populate up or would it be better to use the hierarchical structure that we use when referring to jobs in regular conversation? The only benefit to not populating sequentially seems to be formatting the data later on in my view, but that doesn't sound like a good enough reason to go through the extra work. Thanks

  • JIRA or Trac?

    I used Atlassian JIRA for bug and issue tracking at my last job. I absolutely loved it and it was particularly easy on the eyes. My present company is using Trac instead, and while it does do all the basics, I am finding it really lacking, particularly with the inability to easily setup multiple projects and link issues. Oh, and the fact that it uses SQLLite is a bit of an issue for me to. Does anyone have any other good reasons to switch?

    Does anyone know of a stand-alone tool for C# code cleaning/auditing that can run outside of Visual Studio IDE so as to be part of a build. Or if that isn't possible can someone provide some guidance as to how to make Visual Studio part of a build process -- by that I mean it would be nice to run the IDE's Sort and Remove unused using statements on all files as part of the build, but even better would be an exe that can read the .sln, or .csproj and do the job as part of build system.   • Where to store common application settings

    I want to move my application settings out of XAML and into a config file. For example, ToolTips and Content strings for Buttons/CheckBoxes and Labels. Is this the job of a ResourceDictionary, or should I use the App.Config or Settings.settings file? The ToolTips and Content strings are not really per user, they are more Application wide and may change if the UI is internationalized. Thanks!

  • Taking a break from programming harmful to career?

    I'm currently taking a year out from University to do an internship at a large (well known) software vendor. I'll be returning to Uni next September for a year to finish my studies. I really want to take a year out after graduation, I won't be doing any programming in this year. Will this make me less competitive when applying for programmer jobs when I get back from my year away? I'm looking to work with the Microsoft technology stack, my internship has been all Java and Unix thus far. The assumption is I won't be taking up a full time offer with the company I interned at (despite the offer).

  • How to schedule hundreds of thousands of tasks?

    We have hundreds of thousands of tasks that need to be run at a variety of arbitrary intervals, some every hour, some every day, and so on. The tasks are resource intensive and need to be distributed across many machines. Right now tasks are stored in a database with an "execute at this time" timestamp. To find tasks that need to be executed, we query the database for jobs that are due to be executed, then update the timestamps when the task is complete. Naturally this leads to a substantial write load on the database. As far as I can tell, we are looking for something to release tasks into a queue at a set interval. (Workers could then request tasks from that queue.) What is the best way to schedule recurring tasks at scale? For what it's worth we're largely using Python, although we have no problems using components (RabbitMQ?) written in other languages.

  • DataSet.GetChanges - Save the updated record in a different table than the source one

    I'm doing operation on a dataset containing data from a sql table named Test_1 and then get the updated records using the DataSet.GetChanges(DataRowState.Modified) function. Then i try to save the dataset containing the updated records on a different table than the source one (the table is names Test and has the same structure as Test_1) using the following statement: sqlDataAdapter.Update(changesDataSet,"Test"); I'm getting the following error : Update unable to find TableMapping['Test'] or DataTable 'Test' I'm new to ado.net and don't even know if it"s something possible. Any advice is welcome. Just to provide a bit of context. ETL jobs are importing data in temp table with same structure as the original but with _jobid suffix. Right after a rule engine is doing validation before updating the original table.

  • C# (non-abstract) class to represent paths

    I'm looking for a C# class that represents a file system path. I would like to use it (instead of strings) as the data type of variables and method arguments (top reasons: type safety, concat-proof, logical comparisons). System.IO.Path provides most of the functionality I want, but it is abstract. System.IO.FileInfo, as I understand, performs IO operations to do its job. I only want a wrapper for the path string.   • Are there any scripts to synchronize sites?

    I've just set up a fail-over DNS to switch the site to a second host if the first is down. This is great for showing an old / archived version of the site, but I suspect maintenance is going to be a real pain. I moved the files over with rsync in the first place. Is this the kinda thing that could be run as a cron job, automatically moving over newer files?

  • Looking for a specific python gui module to perform the following task

The user should be able to drag the columns around and drop them onto different columns to switch the two.
