• .NET Serial Port: Port Configuration Dialog

  I'm going to be writing a small app based on the .NET SerialPort class. Is there a generic dialog available for setting the port settings, ala baud rate, data bits, stop bit, parity bit, flow control, etc? I didn't see one in the MSDN documentation, but I would think that one exists, since that stuff doesn't change.

• Are there programs that iteratively write new programs?

  For about a year I have been thinking about writing a program that writes programs. This would primarily be a playful exercise that might teach me some new concepts. My inspiration came from negentropy and the ability for order to emerge from chaos and new chaos to arise out of order in infinite succession. To be more specific, the program would start by writing a short random string. If the string compiles the programs will log it for later comparison. If the string does not compile the program will try to rewrite it until it does compile. As more strings (mini 'useless' programs) are logged they can be parsed for similarities and used to generate a grammar. This grammar can then be drawn on to write more strings that have a higher probability of compilation than purely random strings. This is obviously more than a little silly, but I thought it would be fun to try and grow a program like this. And as a byproduct I get a bunch of unique programs that I can visualize and call art. I'll probably write this in Ruby due to its simple syntax and dynamic compilation and then I will visualize in processing using ruby-processing. What I would like to know is: Is there a name for this type of programming? What currently exists in this field? Who are the primary contributors? BONUS! - In what ways can I procedurally assign value to output programs beyond compiles(y/n)? I may want to extend the functionality of this program to generate a program based on parameters, but I want the program to define those parameters through running the programs that compile and assigning meaning to the programs output. This question is probably more involved than reasonable for a bonus, but if you can think of a simple way to get something like this done in less than 23 lines or one hyperlink, please toss it into your response. I know that this is not quite meta-programming and from the little I know of AI and generative algorithms they are usually more goal oriented than what I am thinking. What would be optimal is a program that continually rewrites and improves itself so I don't have to ^_^

• Can I make ruby send network traffic over a specific iface?

  I am writing a script that grabs the external IP address along with some other information about each iface. I can't figure out how to make ruby send traffic over a specific iface(eth0 and wlan0 for example). I am currently using the open-uri library to open http://whatismyip.org and read it into a variable. def get_external_ip begin open("http://whatismyip.org") { |f| return f.read } rescue return "none" end end Is there any way to specify this at runtime of the script or from within the script itself(ideally)?

• Book recommendation for learning server management and Apache

  Hello, I'm currently managing a site that I feel could be optimized and utilized to be much faster, however, I'm having difficulty finding reliable information to do it. I find the Apache documentation to be a hard read, and too technical about things I don't have a strong grasp on. I'm just looking for a good beginner/intermediate book about server administration to learn as much as possible about Apache, as well as how to create a nice secure, robust server that doesn't crash at the first hint of unusual traffic surges.   Microsoft's FxCop tool uses the introspection API. This introspection API could be used to develop new code analysis tools. But the introspection api is not documented well. Additionally, I was not able to figure out any blogs which explains this API in breadth and depth of it. The knowledge gained by understanding the API can also be used for writing custom FxCop rules. • Add and Subtract 128 Bit Integers in C(++)

  Hello :) I'm writing a compressor for a long stream of 128 bit numbers. I would like to store the numbers as differences -- storing only the difference between the numbers rather than the numbers themselves because I can pack the differences in fewer bytes because they are smaller. However, for compression then I need to subtract these 128 bit values, and for decompression I need to add these values. Maximum integer size for my compiler is 64 bits wide. • How to install MUI files into GAC?

  I am writing a C++/CLI assembly that uses some native DLLs. During compile I can list them as "assembly link resource" so that the assembly is aware of these dependencies. When I use gacutils, it properly pulls all the native DLLs into GAC and they get properly loaded from GAC. Now, some of these native DLLs are localized, and have MUI files. How do I get those to be automatically copied to GAC as well?

Many users will not have their own website to do this, so we are looking for a free service they can use to upload, and manage their own text/image/audio content. For instance, sites.google.com allows you to upload pictures and access them via http so that would work, but that is more about making a website. • Is it poor practice to build an SQL query using WHERE 1=1 AND ...

  I'm writing a script that builds an SQL query by concatenating the string and adding conditions to the WHERE clause as needed. Would it be better practice to use WHERE 1=1 so that the first condition is satisfied and the script can just concatenate an AND x = 'y' to the query, or should I write the extra code to check if a clause has been added and if not, add the AND ? Confusing question, I know. Let me know if I need to be more clear. Rob

I am writing a plugin that will be running along with javascript that i did not write. an event will be triggered before DOM is modified, and one event will be triggered after the modification.   I was wondering if anyone knows of rubyzip alternatives for Ruby, that can handle various formats in particular zip / rar / 7z? I know of libarchive, but it's not complete for my purposes ( it's a good gem thou). (To clarify, libarchive - won't work for me - cause I need to be able to run in on Windows. I always get unautorized exception. I can see the $file has the file content, error is coming while writing the file. Any help is appreciated. Ben
