  • Not using Web Server for html pages

    - by Manoj
For an intranet application instead of using a proper web server, it has been planned to just deploy static html pages by sharing it over the network. This static html page is continously updated in the background by a program running on that PC and people access this html page by typing the shared file path directly in the browser. A maximum of 10 simultaneous users are expected to access it. Can any one see the disadvantages or advantages in this type of deployment?

  • Is it a good practice to always use smart pointers ?

    - by Dony Borris
Hi, I find smart pointers to be a lot more comfortable than raw pointers. So is it a good idea to always use smart pointers? ( Please note that I am from Java background and hence don't much like the idea of explicit memory management. So unless there are some serious performance issues with smart pointers, I'd like to stick with them. ) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Switching to Java from C++: What are the key points?

    - by Roddy
I'm an experienced developer, but most of my OO programming experience has been with C++ (and a little Delphi). I'm considering doing some Android work, hence Java. Coming from the C++ background, what areas of Java are most likely to surprise/annoy/delight me? I felt sure this would already have been asked, but my searches haven't turned up a similar question. CW, of course.

  • How to change color of selected references

    - by user272924
Visual Studio 2010 highlights all references to the same variable (or class) when your cursor is placed over it. with the theme I use highlighted references are white on white - making them virtually impossible to read. what is the name of "display item" in Options- Environment Fonts and Colors that is responsible for that color? changing Plain Text to a darker one partially solves an issue however that also changes color for lots of other stuff on a screen, so ideally would be to change a background for this type of "selection"..

  • Nullpointerexception getSystemService

    - by moppel
Following line will only not result in a nullpointer exception if I'm connected to a WLAN: ConnectivityManager cm = (ConnectivityManager) getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE); Otherwise I get a nullpointer-exception straight ahead? How can I fix this? I want my background service to only work, when it is connected to wlan. But that Nullpointerexception just kills the whole app...

  • Is it best to code from a blank sheet or improving a code that's already written?

    - by user300371
Just had a curious thought, but for general coding and programming, do you think it's best to work out all the logic yourself and start from a blank sheet or just take a code that has been written already(by you or someone else) and just change it to your liking? Assuming you have a programming background of like 1year+. (because as a beginner, it's best to learn from nothing) I'm not saying copy+paste someone else's code and say it's yours.

  • Rotating blocks in JavaScript.

    - by Alvin SMith
I'd like to create a JavaScript web app that makes blocks appear on the page that can be dragged around by the user. If I used DIVs with background colors, it would be easy to rotate them by 90 degrees at a time. However, if I wanted to rotate them arbitrarily, how could I accomplish this? I'd rather not have to resort to Flash, images, or HTML5.

  • iPhone. How to get the rect of parent view?

    - by flexbyte
Hi, My application creates two views: topView (CGRect = 0,0, 320,60) bottomView (CGRect = 0,60, 320,480) Bottom view creates UITabBarController with UIViewControllers: ListViewController etc... ListViewController has own views that are created in viewDidLoad method: background = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame: rect ]; So my question is how to get the bottomView rect inside ListViewController? I want to layout all controller views without intersection with topView. Thank you.

  • Look up values in a BDB for several files in parallel

    - by biznez
What is the most efficient way to look up values in a BDB for several files in parallel? If I had a Perl script which did this for one file at a time, would forking/running the process in background with the ampersand in Linux work? How might Hadoop be used to solve this problem? Would threading be another solution?
