    I have a element that contains options. The element is 150px wide but some of the options are wider. So when rendering, the browser shows the overflow to the right. How can I make the options list overflow to the left?     I've got a table cell that I would always like to be a particular width. However, it doesn't work with large strings of unspaced text. Here's a test case: <html><body> <table><tbody><tr> <td style="border: solid green 1px; width:200px; overflow:hidden;"> This_is_a_terrible_example_of_thinking_outside_the_box. </td> </tr></tbody></table> </body></html> How do I get the text to be cut off at the edge of the box, rather than having the box expanded?

Searching around for it told me that I can use background: fixed or background-attachment properties for this. My problem is the image which will be used as background.     IE8 has a known bug (per connect.microsoft.com) where typing or pasting text into a TEXTAREA element will cause the textarea to scroll by itself. This is hugely annoying and shows up in many community sites, including Wikipedia. The repro is this: open the HTML below with IE8 (or use any long page on wikipedia which will exhibit the same problem until they fix it) size the browser full-screen paste a few pages of text into the TEXTAREA move the scrollbar to the middle position now type one character into the textarea Expected: nothing happens Actual: scrossing happens on its own, and the insertion point ends up near the bottom of the textarea!   • Safari/Chrome (Webkit) - Cannot hide iframe vertical scrollbar

    Hello, I have an iframe on www.mydomain.com that points to support.mydomain.com (which is a CNAME to a foreign domain). I automatically resize the height of my iframe so that the frame will not need any scrollbars to display the contained webpage. On Firefox and IE this works great, there is no scrollbar since I use <iframe ... scrolling="no"></iframe>. However, on webkit browsers (Safari and Chrome), the vertical scrollbar persists even when there is sufficient room for the page without the scrollbar (the scrollbar is grayed out). How do I hide the scrollbar for webkit browsers? Thanks, Ken

I use javascript because i don't want any postbacks.     In a sort of follow up to this question, I have another problem in IE8. When clicking the gallery and the lightbox appears, the images are overflowing their containing element (by the looks of things). Has anyone ever experienced this before? Of course, the good guys (Firefox/Safari/etc) display it perfectly. How do I fix this? Thanks UPDATE Should I just got with a new Lightbox?

    assuming a yield of 3 per hour, that's 83000 hours. 8 hours a day makes 10,500 days, divide by thirty to get 342 mythical man months. I call them mythical because writing 125 tests per person per week is unreal. can any wise soul out there on SO shed some light on what sort of mythical men write unreal quantities of tests for large software projects? thank you. update chrisw thinks there are only 20k tests (check out his explanation below). PS I'd really like to hear from folks who have worked on projects with large test bases

    In my program I have a table that, when loaded, has jQuery add some styles/classes to the table cells and table headers. Everything works fine until rows are added via functionality on the rest of the page. Instead of adding the classes to the table cell during addition, is it possible to "listen" or fire some event that checks to see if child elements were added to the table. Essentially, I want something functionally equivalent to this: $("#table td").live("ready", function(){ // do something }); but the live/ready won't work on a table cell... Any ideas?

  • How to output multicolumn html without "widows"?

    I need to output to HTML a list of categorized links in exactly three columns of text. They must be displayed similar to columns in a newspaper or magazine. So, for example, if there are 20 lines total the first and second columns would contain 7 lines and the last column would contain 6. The list must be dynamic; it will be regularly changed. The tricky part is that the links are categorized with a title and this title cannot be a "widow". If you have a page layout background you'll know that this means the titles cannot be displayed at the bottom of the column -- they must have at least one link underneath them, otherwise they should bump to the next column (I know, technically it should be two lines if I were actually doing page layout, but in this case one is acceptable). I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to get this done. Here's an example of what I mean: Shopping Link 3 Link1 Link 1 Link 4 Link2 Link 2 Link 3 Link 3 Cars Link 1 Music Games Link 2 Link 1 Link 1 Link 2 News As you can see, the "News" title is at the bottom of the middle column, and so is a "widow". This is unacceptable. I could bump it to the next column, but that would create an unnecessarily large amount of white space at the bottom of the second column. What needs to happen instead is that the entire list needs to be re-balanced. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for how to accomplish this, or perhaps source code or a plug in. Python is preferable, but any language is fine. I'm just trying to get the general concept down.

    How do I create a pop panel that docks to the bottom of the screen... The way that I'm doing this is by setting the styling as such: bottom: 10px; position: absolute; This will always set the panel to 10 px from the bottom of the browser window. The problem is that gwt (or gwtp for that matter) is insisting on setting the right and the top of the panel and thus overriding my styling. If I use chrome's element explorer and disable the right and top style rules I get the correct behaviour so one way of doing it is somehow disabling gwt setting of the location of the panel on the screen...?
