• Dom U Installation on Ubuntu 11.10

  I am trying to add a DomU Operating system on Ubuntu 11.10. I have successfully installed Xen. Verified with xm info virsh-version which returns: Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.2 Using library: libvir 0.9.2 Using API: Xen 3.0.1 Running hypervisor: Xen 4.1. Now when I tried to install Dom0 it said: unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': , in VMM. So, I followed this bug link. I could now start adding DomU. When I run ./configure in this, I am getting an error: checking for LIBXML... no checking libxml2 xml2-config >= 2.6.0 ... configure: error: Could not find libxml2 anywhere (see config.log for details). What is the problem?

• Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.1

  Last week, we released the latest update of Oracle Secure Global Desktop. Release 5.1 introduces a number of bug fixes and smaller changes but the most interesting one is definitely increased support for html5-based client access. In SGD 5.0 we added support for Apple iPads using Safari to connect to SGD and display your session right inside the browser. The traditional model for SGD is that you connect using a webbrowser to the webtop and applications that are displayed locally using a local client (tta). This client gets installed the first time you connect. So in the traditional model (which works very well...) you need a webbrowser, java and the tta client. With the addition of html5 support, there's no longer a need to install a local client, in fact, there is also no longer a need to have java installed. We currently support Chrome as a browser to enable html5 clients. This allows us to enable html5 on the android devices and also on desktops running Chrome (Windows, MacOS X, Linux). Connections will work transparently across proxy servers as well. So now you can run any SGD published app or desktop right from your webbrowser inside a browser window. This is very convenient and cool.

• Modular building technique with angles? (A roof)

  Ive been spending a bit of time lately studying the modular buildings of many games and reading/viewing several tutorials about it as well, but almost every example I see uses a plain square building that does not have any angled roof or similar. In all my applications (CS6, Blender/Max, UDK) I adhere to the same grid spacing and I get pretty good results, but trying to make modular angled pieces is confusing me as I'm not sure the best way to approach it. Below is some shots of my template sheet and workflow I have been doing. Should I do the roof separately or is it possible for me to keep it in the same texture sheet? The main issue is below. I have made a couple modular roof pieces but when i try to use them, i end up needing to model multiple other parts to fill gaps based on what roof shape i want. I then model those 'filler' pieces and now i have that much less space left in my texture sheet and those pieces are usually not that reusable for anything else. This is where im not sure how to proceed. If anyone has any links to documents or papers talking about this or advice, I would greatly appreciate it! =-) My main roof pieces with the gaps My power of 2 texture sheet, with 16x16 grid squares. The texture sheet loaded into blender on a 16x16 plane and starting to separate and extrude.

• REST API wrapper - class design for 'lite' object responses

  I am writing a class library to serve as a managed .NET wrapper over a REST API. I'm very new to OOP, and this task is an ideal opportunity for me to learn some OOP concepts in a real-life situation that makes sense to me. Some of the key resources/objects that the API returns are returned with different levels of detail depending on whether the request is for a single instance, a list, or part of a "search all resources" response. This is obviously a good design for the REST API itself, so that full objects aren't returned (thus increasing the size of the response and therefore the time taken to respond) unless they're needed. So, to be clear: .../car/1234.json returns the full Car object for 1234, all its properties like colour, make, model, year, engine_size, etc. Let's call this full. .../cars.json returns a list of Car objects, but only with a subset of the properties returned by .../car/1234.json. Let's call this lite. ...search.json returns, among other things, a list of car objects, but with minimal properties (only ID, make and model). Let's call this lite-lite. I want to know what the pros and cons of each of the following possible designs are, and whether there is a better design that I haven't covered: Create a Car class that models the lite-lite properties, and then have each of the more detailed responses inherit and extend this class. Create separate CarFull, CarLite and CarLiteLite classes corresponding to each of the responses. Create a single Car class that contains (nullable?) properties for the full response, and create constructors for each of the responses which populate it to the extent possible (and maybe include a property that returns the response type from which the instance was created). I expect among other things there will be use cases for consumers of the wrapper where they will want to iterate through lists of Cars, regardless of which response type they were created from, such that the three response types can contribute to the same list. Happy to be pointed to good resources on this sort of thing, and/or even told the name of the concept I'm describing so I can better target my research.

• Movement on the X an Z axis are combined?

  This is probably a stupid question, but I'm trying to simply move a 3D object up, down, left, and right (Not forward or backward). The Y axis works fine, but when I increment the object's X position, the object moves BOTH right and backwards! when I decrement X, left and forwards! setPosition(getPosition().X + 2/*times deltatime*/, getPosition().Y, getPosition().Z); I was astonished that XNA doesnt have its own setPosition function, so I made a parent class for all objects with a setPosition and Draw function. Setposition simply edits a variable "mPosition" and passes it to the common draw function: // Copy any parent transforms. • [Silverlight 4] New PathListBox Control

  One of the new features of Silverlight 4 is the new PathListBox Control. This control is basically a Listbox control witch takes the layout of a shape that you want, so we can represent our data as we want without limits.   So we are ready to open the new Microsoft Blend 4 Beta. First, we going to create a new Silverlight Data Driven Application (MVVM) project.   Open the main view (MainView.xaml), you can find it in Views folder, i look for the new control.   Once you add the PathListbox Control to the main layout of the MainView.xaml, we will add a Line Shape. Now, we are in the main step. Set the LayoutPaths property of the PathListbox control with the line shape that is just created.   The final step is set the ItemsSource property of the PathListbox control. We are going to use a mock object collection from the main view model. I have created the object collection on the main view model created by the Silverlight MVVM project template.   This is the result that we can improve with some animations. This a basic basic use of the PathListbox but using your imagination you can do very cool things.

• How does process of updating code with Continous Integration work?

  I want to draw a model of process of updating the source code with the use of Continous Integration. The main issue is I don't really understand how it works when there are several programmers working on various aspects of the code at the same time. I can't visualize it in my mind. Here's what I know but I might be wrong: New code is sent to repository. Continous Integration server asks Version Control System if there is a new code in repository. If there is than CIS executes tests on the code. If tests show there are problems than CIS orders VCS to revert back to working wersion of the code and communicates it to programmer. If tests are passed positively it compiles the repository code and makes new build of a game? New build is made not after ever single change, but at the end of the day I believe? Are my assumptions above correct? If yes, does it also work when there are several programmers updating repository at once? Is this enough to draw a model of the process in your opinions or did I miss something? Also, what software would I need for above process? Can you guys give examples for CIS software and VCS software and whatever else I need? Does CIS software perform code tests or do I need another tool for that and integrate it with CIS? Is there a repository software?

  Background Information I have a web app that allows end users to connect to ssh-enabled devices and manipulate them. Right now, i only support one version of firmware. The logic is something like this: user clicks on a button to run some command on device. web application looks up the class name containing the correct ssh interface for the device, using the device's model name. (because the number of hardware models is so small, i have a list that's hardcoded in my web app) web app creates a new ssh object using the class loaded in step 2. ssh command is run and session closed. command results displayed on web page. This all works fine. Now the end user wants me to be able to support multiple versions of firmware. But the catch is, they don't want to have to document the firmware version anywhere becuase the amount of overhead this will create in maintaining the system database. In other words, I can't look up the firmware version based on the device. The good news is that it sounds like at most, I'll have to support two different versions of firmware per device. One option is to name the the classes like this: deviceX.1.php deviceX.2.php deviceY.1.php deviceY.2.php where "X" and "Y" represent the model names, and 1 and 2 represent the firmware versions. When a user runs a command, I will first try it with one of the class files, if it fails, i can try with the second. I think always try the newer version of firmware first... so let's say in the above example, I would load deviceX.2.php before deviceX.1.php. This will work, but it's not very efficient. But I can't think of another way around this. Any suggestions?

• Trying to implement pre/post method code: better to use methods or a parent class?

  I'm finding it difficult to frame this question so ... I want to execute code both before and after a method runs in PHP. There are, as far as I know, two ways to implement this: Method One: pre and post methods class Model { function find($id) { $this->_precode(); // ... do stuff $this->post_code(); } } Add the calls to _precode() and _postcode() to each method where I need this functionality. Method Two: __call and method naming class Model extends PrePost { function prepost_find($id) { // ... do stuff ... } } class PrePost { function __call($method,$param) { $method = "prepost_$method"; // .. precode here .. $result = $this->$method($param); // .. postcode here .. } } This relies on naming a method in a specific way in the inheriting class. Is there a preferred way of doing this? The call method can be made to only handle its specific cases and even defer to a child class's call if there is one. I'm not looking for opinions; I'm looking to find out if there are valid reasons to choose one way over another.

• Enable button based on TextBox value (WPF)

  This is MVVM application. There is a window and related view model class. There is TextBox, Button and ListBox on form. Button is bound to DelegateCommand that has CanExecute function. Idea is that user enters some data in text box, presses button and data is appended to list box. I would like to enable command (and button) when user enters correct data in TextBox. Things work like this now: CanExecute() method contains code that checks if data in property bound to text box is correct. Text box is bound to property in view model UpdateSourceTrigger is set to PropertyChanged and property in view model is updated after each key user presses. Problem is that CanExecute() does not fire when user enters data in text box. It doesn't fire even when text box lose focus. How could I make this work? Edit: Re Yanko's comment: Delegate command is implemented in MVVM toolkit template and when you create new MVVM project, there is Delegate command in solution. As much as I saw in Prism videos this should be the same class (or at least very similar). Thing that I don't know is how to make CanExecute() fire in setter of ObjectName property from above code. Re Ben's and Abe's answers: CanExecuteChanged() is event handler and compiler complains: The event 'System.Windows.Input.ICommand.CanExecuteChanged' can only appear on the left hand side of += or -= there are only two more members of ICommand: Execute() and CanExecute() Do you have some example that shows how can I make command call CanExecute(). I found command manager helper class in DelegateCommand.cs and I'll look into it, maybe there is some mechanism that could help. Anyway, idea that in order to activate command based on user input, one needs to "nudge" command object in property setter code looks clumsy. It will introduce dependencies and one of big points of MVVM is reducing them. Is it possible to solve this problem by using dependency properties?

Once i enter an incorrect date in the DateOfBirth field then no custom message is displayed even if use the attribute like [Birthday(ErrorMessage=".....")]. The message displayed is the one returned from the db ie "The value '32/4/1967' is not valid for DateOfBirth.". I tried to enter some break points around the code, and found out that the "value" in attribute is always null when the date is incorrect, but always gets a value if the date is in correct format. The same ( value == null) is passed also in the code generated by the designer. This thing is driving me nuts. Please can anyone help me deal with this? Also if someone can tell me where exactly is the point of entry from the view to the database. Is it related to the model binder? because i wanted to check exactly what value is passed once i press the "submit" button. Thank you.

• How to "DRY up" C# attributes in Models and ViewModels?

  This question was inspired by my struggles with ASP.NET MVC, but I think it applies to other situations as well. Now imagine this scenario multiplied by 10 or 100, and you can see that it can quickly become quite tedious and error prone to ensure consistency across ViewModels (and therefore across Views). How can I "DRY up" this code? Before you answer, "Just put all the attributes on FooModel," I've tried that, but it didn't work because I need to keep my ViewModels "flat". In other words, I can't just compose each ViewModel with a Model--I need my ViewModel to have only the properties (and attributes) that should be consumed by the View, and the View can't burrow into sub-properties to get at the values. Update LukLed's answer suggests using inheritance. This definitely reduces the amount of non-DRY code, but it doesn't eliminate it. Note that, in my example above, the DisplayName attribute for the Category property would need to be written twice because the data type of the property is different between the display and edit ViewModels. This isn't going to be a big deal on a small scale, but as the size and complexity of a project scales up (imagine a lot more properties, more attributes per property, more views per model), there is still the potentially for "repeating yourself" a fair amount. Perhaps I'm taking DRY too far here, but I'd still rather have all my "friendly names", data types, validation rules, etc. typed out only once.

  I'm playing around with writing a jQuery plugin that uses an attribute to define form validation behavior (yes, I'm aware there's already a validation plugin; this is as much a learning exercise as something I'll be using). Ideally, I'd like to have something like this: Example 1 - input: <input id="name" type="text" v:onvalidate="return this.value.length > 0;" /> Example 2 - wrapper: <div v:onvalidate="return $(this).find('[value]').length > 0;"> <input id="field1" type="text" /> <input id="field2" type="text" /> <input id="field3" type="text" /> </div> Example 3 - predefined: <input id="name" type="text" v:validation="not empty" /> The goal here is to allow my jQuery code to figure out which elements need to be validated (this is already done) and still have the markup be valid XHTML, which is what I'm having a problem with. I'm fairly sure this will require a combination of both DTD and XML Schema, but I'm not really quite sure how exactly to execute. • Flex Error: Repeater is not executing.

  Hello Everyone, I have been trying to get a Repeater to work since yesterday. It works the first time it has been loaded with data but the second time, it is loaded, the following error results with the debugger higlighting a row with the statement isHandlingEvent = false; in the watcherFired method of the Binding class. • My google map android app keeps crashing

  I have followed about two tutorials from vogella and some other tutorial that looked similar...very similar but to no avail. • Rendering a view to a string in MVC, then redirecting -- workarounds?

  Hi -- I can't render a view to a string and then redirect, despite this answer from Feb (after version 1.0, I think) that claims it's possible. I thought I was doing something wrong, and then I read this answer from Haack in July that claims it's not possible. If somebody has it working and can help me get it working, that's great (and I'll post code, errors). However, I'm now at the point of needing workarounds. There are a few, but nothing ideal. Has anybody solved this, or have any comments on my ideas? This is to render email. While I can surely send the email outside of the web request (store info in a db and get it later), there are many types of emails and I don't want to store the template data (user object, a few other LINQ objects) in a db to let it get rendered later. I could create a simpler, serializable POCO and save that in the db, but why? ... I just want rendered text! I can create a new RedirectToAction object that checks if the headers have been sent (can't figure out how to do this -- try/catch?) and, if so, builds out a simple page with a meta redirect, a javascript redirect, and also a "click here" link. Within my controller, I can remember if I've rendered an email and, if so, manually do #2 by displaying a view. I can manually send the redirect headers before any potential email rendering. Then, rather than using the MVC infrastructure to redirecttoaction, I just call result.end. This seems easiest, but really messy. Anything else? EDIT: I've tried Dan's code (very similar to the code from Jan/Feb that I've already tried) and I'm still getting the same error. The only substantial difference I can see is that his example uses a view while I use a partial view. I'll try testing this later with a view. • MVC keeping the PartialView in its own context - ignore the main view holding the partial view

  I'm looking at the partialview components of the MVC Framework. i want my partial view to be handled in its own action and for the rest of the view to handle itself, but i'm getting an exception because the main page is not getting its view fired. Am i going around this the wrong way? Rather then having all the form submitting code in the main action for the view. am i do this wrong?

• How do I get confidence intervals without inverting a singular Hessian matrix?

  Hello. I recently posted this to reddit and it was suggested I come here, so here I am. I'm a student working on an epidemiology model in R, using maximum likelihood methods. I created my negative log likelihood function. It's sort of gross looking, but here it is: NLLdiff = function(v1, CV1, v2, CV2, st1 = (czI01 - czV01), st2 = (czI02 - czV02), st01 = czI01, st02 = czI02, tt1 = czT01, tt2 = czT02) { prob1 = (1 + v1 * CV1 * tt1)^(-1/CV1) prob2 = ( 1 + v2 * CV2 * tt2)^(-1/CV2) -(sum(dbinom(st1, st01, prob1, log = T)) + sum(dbinom(st2, st02, prob2, log = T))) } The reason the first line looks so awful is because most of the data it takes is inputted there. czI01, for example, is already declared. I did this simply so that my later calls to the function don't all have to have awful vectors in them. I then optimized for CV1, CV2, v1 and v2 using mle2 (library bbmle). That's also a bit gross looking, and looks like: ml.cz.diff = mle2 (NLLdiff, start=list(v1 = vguess, CV1 = cguess, v2 = vguess, CV2 = cguess), method="L-BFGS-B", lower = 0.0001) Now, everything works fine up until here. ml.cz.diff gives me values that I can turn into a plot that reasonably fits my data. I also have several different models, and can get AICc values to compare them. However, when I try to get confidence intervals around v1, CV1, v2 and CV2 I have problems. Basically, I get a negative bound on CV1, which is impossible as it actually represents a square number in the biological model as well as some warnings. The warnings are this: http://i.imgur.com/B3H2l.png . Is there a better way to get confidence intervals? Or, really, a way to get confidence intervals that make sense here? What I see happening is that, by coincidence, my hessian matrix is singular for some values in the optimization space. But, since I'm optimizing over 4 variables and don't have overly extensive programming knowledge, I can't come up with a good method of optimization that doesn't rely on the hessian. I have googled the problem - it suggested that my model's bad, but I'm reconstructing some work done before which suggests that my model's really not awful (the plots I make using the ml.cz.diff look like the plots of the original work). I have also read the relevant parts of the manual as well as Bolker's book Ecological Models in R. I have also tried different optimization methods, which resulted in a longer run time but the same errors. The "SANN" method didn't finish running within an hour, so I didn't wait around to see the result. tl;dr : my confidence intervals are bad, is there a relatively straightforward way to fix them in R. • Deleting unreferenced child records with nhibernate

  Hi There I am working on a mvc app using nhibernate as the orm (ncommon framework) I have parent/child entities: Product, Vendor & ProductVendors and a one to many relationship between them with Product having a ProductVendors collection Product.ProductVendors. I currently am retrieving a Product object and eager loading the children and sending these down the wire to my asp.net mvc client. A user will then modify the list of Vendors and post the updated Product back. I am using a custom model binder to generate the modified Product entity. I am able to update the Product fine and insert new ProductVendors. My problem is that dereferenced ProductVendors are not cascade deleted when specifying Product.ProductVendors.Clear() and calling _productRepository.Save(product). The problem seems to be with attaching the detached instance.   Background I am realtively new to hooks, and I have been asked to use a hook to populate a view with some data, currently the view gathers it data from a function that is in the model, and becuase the whole object is being passed to the view I can access the function.   As any programmer in the world at least once in his/her life, I am trying to create my "revolutionary", the new and only one operating system. :D Well, I am using a virtual emulator (Oracle VM Virtual Box), for which I create a new unknwon operating system, with a vmdk disk. I like vmdk because they are just plain files, so I can paste my boot-loader over the first 512 bytes of the virtual hard disk. Now, I am trying to read the next sector of this virtual disk, on which I would paste a simple kernel that would display a message. I have two questions: Am I reading the second segment (the first -512 bytes- is occupied by the bootloader) correctly?
