• WPF: ContentPresenter changing Foreground unexpectedly depending on where styles are located

  Hi, I'm having an issue with the ContentPresenter behaving unexpectedly based on whether the styles are located in the Window.Resources or in a ResourceDictionary. Specifically, I'm setting the Foreground of the default TextBlock to Black, then setting the Foreground value in my default button style to White. • How to change the BIOS splash screen on HP Pavilion G4 1303AU?

  My cousin got (legally) a laptop model HP Pavilion G4 1303AU from the government of my state. The laptop dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows 7. Everything is great except the BIOS logo at boot which I would like to change but don't know how to. I tried to flash a new BIOS firmware, but this didn't change the logo. I found this link for the same model and the same problem, but no success there either. Also I saw this blog post which wasn't helpful, except for this comment that mentioned an image in .ROM format. Not wishing to decompile and recompile the BIOS, can someone help me out with a step by step guide ?

For example assume that I have 4 physical ESX Hosts with dual physical CPU's and 3 separate single vCPU Virtual Machines running SQL Server 2008 running in that cluster. How many SQL Standard Processor licenses would I need? Is it 3 (one per VM) or 12 (one per VM on each physical host) or something else? How many SQL Enterprise Processor licenses would I need? Is it 3 (one per VM) or 8 (one for each physical CPU in the cluster) or, again, something else? The range in the list prices for these options goes from $17k to $200k so getting it right is quite important. Bonus question: If I choose the Server+CAL licensing model do I need to buy multiple Server instance licenses for each of the ESX hosts (so 12 copies of the SQL Server Standard server license so that there are enough licenses on each host to run all VM's) or again can I just license the VM and what difference would using Enterprise per server licensing make? Edited to Add Having spent some time reading the SQL 2008 Licensing Guide (63 Pages! Includes Maps!*) I've come across this: • Under the Server/CAL model, you may run unlimited instances of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise within the server farm, and move those instances freely, as long as those instances are not running on more servers than the number of licenses assigned to the server farm. • Under the Per Processor model, you effectively count the greatest number of physical processors that may support running instances of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise at any one time across the server farm and assign that number of Processor licenses And earlier: ..For SQL Server, these rule changes apply to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise only. By my reading this means that for my 3 VM's I only need 3 SQL 2008 Enterprise Processor Licenses or one copy of Server Enterprise + CALs for the cluster. By implication it means that I have to license all processors if I choose SQL 2008 Standard Processor licensing or that I have to buy a copy of SQL Server 2008 Standard for each ESX host if I choose to use CALs. *There is a map to demonstrate that a Server Farm cannot extend across an area broader than 3 timezones unless it's in the European Free Trade Area, I wasn't expecting that when I started reading it.

• Home networking problem between power line communication and Ethernet

  My network runs through the electrical wiring of the house and is organised as such: Groundfloor: an ADSL+network switch, using DHCP (address : 172.19.3.1) (Mac) PCs connected via an electrical adapter (model: D-Link DHP-200) (1 per PC) First Floor: 1 switch (8 ports) connected via an electrical adapter (model: D-Link DHP-200) (address unknown) 2 Mac PCs connected (via RJ45 network wires) to that router using DHCP The Problem On the first floor, file tranfers between PCs are fast and perfect. But if I try to transfer files from or to a computer on the ground floor, the speed is slow and eventually the transfer dies out. The Question So I suspect the 1st floor switch is creating some kind of barrier (firewall?) preventing external PCs from accessing the PCs it is connected to? Am I right and if so, how could I disable that barrier?

• BSOD Before Windows Will Loads - Graphics Related

  Alright deep breath here: (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit btw) Today I installed Star Craft 2 Beta. After trying to log in, it had some issues where it said my device stopped working (referring to my video device I have to imagine). After I force quit the game there were some random "hot" (various colors if i remember correctly) pixels on the screen. I decided to reboot and try again with similar results. I figured that maybe my display drivers could stand to be updated (I don't frequently update them as I don't often run into problems). I went out to nVidia's website and grabbed the latest drivers for Windows 7 64 bit GeForce 9 series. (I have SLi-ed 9800 GTs). Everything seemed to install fine and I performed the restart. This is when things went from bad (can't play SC2 beta ;) ) to worse (can't boot into windows!). Initially the very first splash screen - I think it's the bios splash screen - had lines of colored pixels covering it. It then displayed a screen that had lots of "(" on it. After that it showed the normal windows 7 splash screen as if it were going to load into Windows. Before getting much further, it BSODed on me. It was a 0x0000003B stop error. At nvlddmkm.sys. A little digging let verified that this was a problem with an nVidia graphics device, not a real shocker. Windows decided it would try to help me diagnose the problem, which it's only answer to was a System Restore, which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I was able to boot up fine in safe mode and was not able to roll back the driver, however I did uninstall the driver and reboot. I still had the graphical anomalies during the first two screens (same colored "."'s and weird "("'s), but there was NOT a stop error. Windows loaded up, found a default driver for the device and installed it and I restarted to let it load - and had yet another BSOD Stop error. Repeat driver uninstall, this time I reloaded the same version (I think it's possible that I was running a 32 bit version or a vista versus windows 7 version, but I don't have that information handy) of the nVidia driver from their website. Restart, same anomalies, same Stop Error. I am at a loss - At this point all I can think is that the firmware for the Video cards got fried or there's actual damage to the cards which I sincerely hope is not the case but the sooner I know the better. • Unclear pricing of Windows Azure

  How do you people think about the Windows Azure pricing model and the way it is presented to the user? I just found out that Azure keeps charging hours for STOPPED instances. I just received a bill from more than 100 euro for 3 STOPPED instances (not) running "HelloAzure". I the past I also played around with Amazon Web Services. Amazon doesn't charge for stopped instances. I was wondering: "Should I have known this before, or is Microsoft doing a bad job in clear communication in the pricing model?" Quote from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/pricing/ : Compute time, measured in service hours: Windows Azure compute hours are charged only for when your application is deployed. When developing and testing your application, developers will want to remove the compute instances that are not being used to minimize compute hour billing. Partial compute hours are billed as full hours. I read this, so I stopped all instances after a few hours playing around. Now it seems I should have deleted them, not just "stopped". Strictly speaking, all depends on the definition of the word "deployed". If you upload an application, but it is not running, can it still be regarded as being "deployed"? May be, but when you read this for the first time, with AWS experience in mind, I don't think it's 100% clear what this means. Technically speaking, an uploaded application only uses (read: should only use / needs only) a few MB harddrive space. It doesn't require any CPU time. If Azure wants to reserve CPU's for not running instances.. well, that's Azure's choice, not mine. I don't want to spread a hate campaign at all, but I do want to know how people think about this subject. Should Microsoft be more clear about their pricing model or do you think it's clear enough? Second question: did anyone got refunded for a similar case? Thanks in advance! UPDATE 27-01-2011 I sent an email to customer support a few days ago, but I guess that didn't reach anu human being because I didn't hear anything from it. So, I made a telephone call today with a Dutch customer support representative (I live in Holland). She totally understood the problem and she's trying to get a refund for me. However, she mentioned that "usually these refund requests are denied", but she's going to try. She also mentioned that I'm not the first one with this (or similar) problem. UPDATE 28-01-2011 I just received a phonecall from Microsoft support. The lady told me some good news: the money will refunded. However, the invoice has not been made yet, and my creditcard will first be chardged, after which it will be refunded, but hey, that's no problem for me! I'm glad the way it's solved! • CORAID using only 1 of the 2 available NICs for AoE traffic

  We got 6 CORAID shelves in my workplace. On 2 of them I see AoE traffic on only 1 of the 2 NICs that are attached to the SAN switch. We got jumbo frames enabled on all devices. Both NICs show up when I issue the aoe-interfaces command. This wouldn't bother me too much if the throughput performance observed on the "bad" shelves using bonnie++ wasn't half of the result of the "good" shelves. The "good" shelves are older SR1521 model and they have ReiserFS on their LUNS - not that I think it makes a difference - and the "bad" shelves are newer SR2421 model and have JFS. Any help as to what is going on and how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated. BTW: even the lower performing shelves outperform another iSCSI device we got, but that is another story... • USB hard drive doesn't graceful power off after eject on Windows 7

  I have a couple of Seagate FreeAgent Go external USB hard drives and would like them to gracefully power off after ejecting in Windows 7. With Windows XP a few seconds after they are ejected they gracefully power off. When ejecting them on Windows 7 they just stay on and have to be physically disconnected before they lose power. I have checked the hard drive removal policy and it is set to quick removal. I have also looked in the Seagate forums but I couldn't find any info on this so I thought I'd ask the SuperUser community on any ideas why the difference and how to get the same behaviour in Windows 7 as in XP? Update: I am finding that this also happens with USB thumb drives as well. My current theory is that there were changes to the driver model with Vista/Win 7 that haven't been reflected in the device drivers yet. So things that worked under XP don't under Win7 as the drivers haven't been updated for the new model. Does that sound right?

• Laptop battery: is voltage really important to respect?

  I got an Acer Aspire 5100 and I just bought a new battery (after the stock battery just died yesterday). But I saw something after buying and I'm wondering whether it's really important or not. My stock battery was a 6-cell 4000mah 11.1v and the new battery is an 8-cell 4800mah 14.8v . I know that 8-cell and 4800mah is okay, but what about the 14.8v instead of 11.1v? The battery description says it's compatible with my laptop model (AS5100, model BL51), but the voltage difference makes me wonder. Will the laptop only take what it needs? Or will it be getting 14.8v straight in the brain? I know that my wall plug claims to output 19v, so logically I'm thinking a higher voltage battery shouldn't be a problem. Am I correct in thinking this? Thanks in advance for your answers!

• Computer won't recognize second WD internal HD

  I installed a Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB internal hard drive, and want to use it for back up. My BIOS recognizes the device, but it is not recognized in Disk Management. It also is not recognized in "my computer." When I right-click my C drivepropertieshardware, I see it listed. First the drive was plugged into SATA port 1 on my motherboard, then I tried it in port 3, where it remains. I've been working on this for hours. Any help would be appreciated. • KVM machine does not start ssh, network is started, used to work

  have been searching an pulling my hear out for the last 6 hours. I have a virtual machine that has been running fine for the last six months. I was happy ssh'ing into it and it was running a database and some small apps. Tonight ssh stopped working, so I decided to reboot the machine. I now have the following situation: virsh list --all states machine as running I can ping the machine and get a reply When I ssh to the machine I see "ssh: connect to host [myserver] port 22: Connection refused" nmap does not show port 22 as open I have tried to: - reboot the machine once more (no luck) - mount the filesystem and check /etc/ssh/sshd.conf (has not changed since working situation) - install virsh console, however this does not seem to work When I mount the fs directly using losetup the strange thing is that file dates seem to be frozen in /var/log/ around the time of the crash. If I look in /var/run/ I can see an sshd.pid, but the time is 6 hours ago (and numerous reboots). • Performance difference between MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz) vs Air (1.7 GHz)?

  I'm comparing these two Apple laptops: MacBook Pro (13", 2011 model): 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on 2.4GHz configuration MacBook Air (13", 2011 model): 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 onboard memory Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory There's definitely a gap between them in terms of CPU speed and graphics, but what practical difference would this make on a day-to-day basis? On the one hand, I love the sleek, thin appearance of the Air. On the other hand, I don't want a machine that's going to be dog-slow when doing tasks such as running Virtual Machines, dual-booting to Windows and running multiple instances of Visual Studio, and maybe some light gaming. Is there going to be a major difference that makes the MacBook Pro a more attractive purchase?

• Digital audio input on Macbook?

  I have: a Macbook (not Pro), don't know the exact model but it's a Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz and probably what Wikipedia calls the "Late 2006" or "Mid 2007" model a DVD player, region-free, that has "Coax and TosLink optical digital audio outputs" I want to make an MP3 of the audio track of some DVDs (for learning a new language), and I can't use the Macbook's built-in DVD drive because it's a different region (ugh!). I'm sure I can connect the DVD player to the Macbook with an analog audio cable. However, if it's possible I'd prefer to keep the signal digital. I'm not even positive if my old Macbook has digital audio in, and if so what I need to connect to it. (I've done plenty of home audio geeking, but always in analog!) Will a "Toslink cable" plus a "Toslink Female to Mini-Plug Male Adapter" (found on Amazon) let me connect my things together? It looks like the pieces will fit but I'd like to hear someone confidently knowledgeable on the matter before I buy something. Thanks!

• Is it possible to download minimal drivers on Windows, without the extra software packages?

  The situation in all its glory: 30 megs for ATIs' "Display Driver Only". Almost 100 megs for NVidias' GeForce/Ion bloatware. 300 megs for an HP printer driver with immense amount of crap 30 megs for a Realtek integrated sound card driver. 50 megs for a mouse driver ...and dozens and dozens of other similar examples Additinally, UI/UX on vendors' sites is really terrible: I have to carefully pick and choose the exact model of my whatever, although this packages do contain drivers for pretty much every possible hardware model out there. My question is: How and where can I download true minimal drivers without all these ATI "Installation Managers", Realtek GUIs, ASUS tools, etc.?

• Which driver for "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" in a laptop?

  We have some HP laptops here that comes equipped with a video card that identifies itself as "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650", like this one. However, which drivers do we choose? As far as we can tell, HD 3650 is desktop cards, or at least there are no drivers listed for that series with "Mobility" in their name. If I pick the following on the ATI Driver Download page: Graphics Windows Vista 32-bit Edition Mobility Radeon Then the dropdown for the card model contains X300, X600, X700, X800, X1300, X1400, X1600, X1800, 9600, 9700 and 9800 models, but no "HD" nor "36xx series". However, if I change to just "Radeon" for the last selection there, I can find a "Radeon HD 3600 Series" model in the list. Also, if I pick "Windows 7" as the operating system, I can find a "Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series" card, but no 3600. So, which one to pick? The main reason I ask is that they all seem to have some kind of problem installing, so neither seems to be the right one (they all crash with "Catalyst Install Manager has stopped working".)

  I'm trying to deploy windows 7 with SCCM 2012 R2 to physical desktops and laptops. But the task sequence keeps failing, no matter what I try. When I try it on a VM it works fine. However, when I try it on a physical computer it fails. So I think it has something to do with drivers, but I already tried both the "auto apply drivers" + wmi query for model method, and also the "apply driver package" + wmi query for model method. In the link below I added a zip file, containing two other zip files. One is a captured log from a failed osd on a desktop, the other is the export of my task sequence. Download zip-file with log and TS If anyone could resolve the issue, or share their own task sequence for such a task (pure sccm 2012 (R2), no MDT), that would be great.
