• Interview Question: .Any() vs if (.Length > 0) for testing if a collection has elements

  In a recent interview I was asked what the difference between .Any() and .Length > 0 was and why I would use either when testing to see if a collection had elements. This threw me a little as it seems a little obvious but feel I may be missing something. I suggested that you use .Length when you simply need to know that a collection has elements and .Any() when you wish to filter the results. Presumably .Any() takes a performance hit too as it has to do a loop / query internally.

SELECT nome_t FROM myTable WHERE nome_t ILIKE '%selectnothing%'; This is the EXPLAIN ANALYZE VERBOSE Seq Scan on myTable (cost=0.00..15259.04 rows=37 width=29) (actual time=2153.061..2153.061 rows=0 loops=1) Output: nome_t Filter: (nome_t ~~* '%selectnothing%'::text) Total runtime: 2153.116 ms myTable has around 350k rows and the table definition is something like: CREATE TABLE myTable ( nome_t text NOT NULL, ) I have an index on nome_t as stated below: CREATE INDEX idx_m_nome_t ON myTable USING btree (nome_t); Although this is clearly a good candidate for Fulltext search I would like to rule that option out for now. This query is meant to be run from a web application and currently it's taking around 2 seconds which is obviously too much; Is there anything I can do, like using other index methods, to improve the speed of this query?

• Access 2007: Dynamic SQL to be run when opening a report

  I'm trying to have some SQL execute when I open a report. This works fine when I try to match on a column that's an integer with an integer, but when I try to match on a "text" column, it keeps popping up a dialog asking for what you want to filter on. Here's a somple query: select person_phone_numbers.person_id from person_phone_numbers where phone_number = '444-444-4444' This is actually a sub-query I'm trying to use, but this is where the problem is. If I change it to this it works fine: select person_phone_numbers.person_id from person_phone_numbers where phone_id = 2 I put this in the OnOpen event and I'm assigning it to Me.RecordSource if that makes a difference. My goal here is to have a form accept query parameter(s) and have it open a report with the results. Any thoughts on why it wants to ask for a parameter vs. just running the query the way I have it?

• Android: How to make launcher always open the main activity instead of child activity? (or otherwise

  I have activities A and B. The A is the one with LAUNCHER intent-filter (i.e. the activity that is started when we click the app icon on home screen). A launches B using startActivity(new Intent(A.this, B.class)). When the user has the B activity open, and then put my application into the background, and later my application's process is killed, when the user starts my application again, B is opened instead of A. This caused a force close in my app, because A is the activity that initializes the resources my app needs, and when B tried to access the uninitialized resources, B crashes. Do you have any suggestions what should I do in this situation?

  I have created a login.jsp with some login username and password. Users are categorized into A and B. Then I have to redirect each user according to the user category. I also need to retrieve the username in the next page.   Say I have two std::set<std::string>s. The first one, old_options, needs to be merged with additional options, contained in new_options. I can't just use std::merge (well, I do, but not only that) because I also check for doubles and warn the user about this accordingly. To this effect, I have void merge_options( set<string> &old_options, const set<string> &new_options ) { // find duplicates and create merged_options, a stringset containing the merged options // handle duplicated the way I want to // ... old_options = merged_options; } Is it better to use std::swap( merged_options, old_options ); or the assignment I have? Is there a better way to filter duplicates and return the merged set than consecutive calls to std::set_intersection and std::set_union to detect dupes and merge the sets? I know it's slower than one traversal and doing both at once, but these sets are small (performance is not critical) and I trust the Standard more than I trust myself.

  Okay I got this function who prints the name of all files in a directory recursively problem is that it's very slow and it gets the stuff from a network device and with my current code it has to access the device time after time. What I would want is to first load all the files from the directory recursively and then after that go through all files with the regex to filter out all the files I don't want. Unless anyone got a better suggestion. Same thing on olx.com - location and number of items for each category. Now imagine I have tables: [products] (Id, Name, CategoryId, LocationId) [Categories] (Id,Name) [Location] (Id, Name) My question how can I do the same, cause count things even with caching looks expensive? • Accessing contents of a file in a web-application without uploading.

  As far as I can tell, it is impossible to access the content of files on the user's computer in a web application without first uploading to the server, then re-downloading to user, unless some sort of plug-in is used. (Flash, etc.) Ideally, the user would upload the file directly to localstorage and then scripts would have a chance to process/display/validate/filter without the user having to wait on an upload. Are there any features in upcoming web standards such as html5 that will allow this? If not, why has there been no effort to make this possible, and how can I work around it without getting stuck with plugins?

  In a for loop like this, for i in `cat *.input`; do echo "$i" done if one of the input file contains entries like *a, it will, and give the filenames ending in 'a'. Is there a simple way of preventing this filename expansion? Because of use of multiple files, globbing (set -o noglob) is not a good option. I should also be able to filter the output of cat to escape special characters, but for i in `cat *.input | sed 's/*/\\*'` ... still causes *a to expand, while for i in `cat *.input | sed 's/*/\\\\*'` ... gives me \*a (including backslash). [ I guess this is a different question though ]

• Wrong code coverage on of unit test

  I'm using code coverage for unit tests in Xcode. Everything is working except some special cases, for example protocol declaration shows wrong values. If I have : @protocol SomeProtocole <NSObject> @property (nonatomic, readonly) NSObject *example; @end I will get 0% code coverage for this file. But I have unit test that is using class that conforms to that protocol. Only solution I found so far is to filter code coverage raport to not include protocols. But I would like to see real values for protocols. Any one have some solution to fix it?

  Let's say I have the following 4 tables (for examples' sake): Owners, Trucks, Boxes, Apples. An owner can have many trucks, a truck can have many boxes and a box can have many apples. Owners have an id. Trucks have an id and owner_id. Boxes have an id and truck_id. Apples have an id and box_id. Let's say I want to get all the apples "owned" by an owner with id = 34. So I want to get all the boxes that are in boxes that are in trucks that owner 34 owns. There is a "hierarchy" if you will of 4 tables that each only has reference to its direct "parent". How can I quickly filter boxes while satisfying conditions across the other 3 tables? I hope that made sense somewhat. Thanks.

• PHP IDE with Integrated Web Server

  Note: This is not another "What is the best PHP IDE?" question. I'm looking for a PHP IDE with a specific feature, namely an integrated / embedded (php enabled) web server; ideally with xdebug pre-bundled. I already know that Aptana 1.5 has this functionality (and some older versions of Zend Studio as well), but Aptana 1.5 hasn't been supported for quite some time and as we make the transition to PHP 5.3 and beyond, it's usefulness will diminish significantly. I've looked at some options including Eclipse PDT and NetBeans, but it seems every PHP IDE relies on a separate local/remote web server to actually interpret the code. I know installing a web server locally is fairly trivial, but this is for a classroom solution, where installing, configuring, and maintaining a web server on 1000 machines is simply not feasible. A remote server solution will also not work due to the need to use debugging functionality (xdebug currently requires a hardcoded IP for the debug client). This seems like such an obvious feature/plugin for a PHP IDE, but my research thus far has turned up no results.

  I'm looking for a way to do query auto-completion/suggestions in Lucene. I've Googled around a bit and played around a bit, but all of the examples I've seen seem to be setting up filters in Solr. We don't use Solr and aren't planning to move to using Solr in the near future, and Solr is obviously just wrapping around Lucene anyway, so I imagine there must be a way to do it! I've looked into using EdgeNGramFilter, and I realise that I'd have to run the filter on the index fields and get the tokens out and then compare them against the inputted Query... I'm just struggling to make the connection between the two into a bit of code, so help is much appreciated! To be clear on what I'm looking for (I realised I wasn't being overly clear, sorry) - I'm looking for a solution where when searching for a term, it'd return a list of suggested queries. When typing 'inter' into the search field, it'll come back with a list of suggested queries, such as 'internet', 'international', etc.

• How to use files/streams as source/sink in PulseAudio

  I'm a PulseAudio noob, and I'm not sure if I'm even using the correct terminology. I've seen that PulseAudio can perform echo cancellation, but it needs a source and a sink to filter from, and a new source and sink. I can provide my mic and my audio-out as the source and sink, right? Now, here's my situation: I have two video streams, say, rtmp streams, or consider two flv files, say at any given moment, stream X is the input stream that's coming from another computer's webcam+mic and stream Y is the output stream that I'm sending, (and it's coming from my computer's webcam+mic). Question: Back to the first paragraph - here's the thing, I don't want to use my mic and my audio-out, instead, I want to use these two "input" and "output" streams as my source and sink so to speak (of course, I'll use xuggler maybe, to extract just the audio from X and Y). It may be a strange question, and I have my reasons for doing this strange this - I need to experiment and verify the results to see.

I'd just like a single string as a result, not entire document. I'd like the query to filter and return only the data I need, I don't want to return all the results and search on the C# side. EDIT: I wouldn't mind if _id was passed back, but I don't need it.   hello everyone i have a complex query to be written but cannot figure it out here are my tables Sales --one row for each sale made in the system SaleProducts --one row for each line in the invoice (similar to OrderDetails in NW) Deals --a list of possible deals/offers that a sale may be entitled to DealProducts --a list of quantities of products that must be purchased in order to get a deal now im trying to make a query which will tell me for each sale which deals he may get the relevant fields are: Sales: SaleID (PK) SaleProducts: SaleID (FK), ProductID (FK) Deals: DealID (PK) DealProducts: DealID(FK), ProductID(FK), Mandatories (int) for required qty i believe that i should be able to use some sort of cross join or outer join, but it aint working here is one sample (of about 30 things i tried) SELECT DealProducts.DealID, DealProducts.ProductID, DealProducts.Mandatories, viwSaleProductCount.SaleID, viwSaleProductCount.ProductCount FROM DealProducts LEFT OUTER JOIN viwSaleProductCount ON DealProducts.ProductID = viwSaleProductCount.ProductID GROUP BY DealProducts.DealID, DealProducts.ProductID, DealProducts.Mandatories, viwSaleProductCount.SaleID, viwSaleProductCount.ProductCount the problem is that it doesnt show any product deals that r not fullfiled (probably because of the productid join). i need that also sales that dont have the requiremnets show up, then i can filter out any saleid that exists in this query "where AmountBought thank you for your help

  Hi All, Imagine a have a very long enunumeration, too big to reasonably convert to a list. Imagine also that I want to remove duplicates from the list. Lastly imagine that I know that only a small subset of the initial enumeration could possibly contain duplicates. The last point makes the problem practical. Basically I want to filter out the list based on some predicate and only call Distinct() on that subset, but also recombine with the enumeration where the predicate returned false. Can anyone think of a good idiomatic Linq way of doing this? I suppose the question boils down to the following: With Linq how can you perform selective processing on a predicated enumeration and recombine the result stream with the rejected cases from the predicate?

  Hello I'm building a Spring MVC web application that runs on Tomcat 6.0.20 and JDK 1.6.0_19. When I send some special characters through an HTML form some of them are stored as question marks ? For example these symbols are stored correctly: €, á, é, í, ‰, etc But some symbols are replaced with ? like: £, ?, ? MySQL tables charset is utf-8. My jsp also use utf-8 <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" pageEncoding="UTF-8" %> I have included org.springframework.web.filter.CharacterEncodingFilter in web.xml as suggested here When I debug the POST request when sending 3 characters €a£ with firebug I get: %E2%82%ACa%E2%82%A4 which is correct since E2 82 AC is the code for € and E2 82 A4 is the code for £ but £ is stored as ? in the database. When I save £ directly into the database it is displayed correctly in the webpage. How can I fix this?

  I recently created a Sinatra app with a login form (no basic auth). To prevent access to the app unless the user logged in I put a before block in place before do unless request.path_info == '/login' authenticated? end end I quickly realized that this prevented me from accessing resources in the public directory like my style sheet and logo unless authenticated first as well. To get around that I changed my filter to the following: before do unless request.path_info == '/login' || request.path_info == "/stylesheets/master.css" || request.path_info == "/images/logo.png" authenticated? end end If there were lots of resources I needed to provide exceptions to this way of making them would quickly become overwhelming. What is a better way to code this so I can make exceptions for the public directory or even its specific sub-directories and files like /stylesheets, /images, /images/bg.png but not /secret or /secret/eyes-only.pdf? Or ... Is there a completely different best-practice to handle this situation of locking down everything except the stuff related to logging in (handlers, views, resources)?
