• Technique to Display Multiple Browser Windows Tiled at Same time?

  I have a separate monitor that I use for Toodledo (a web-based task managment app), in which I like to display various views (Next Action Status, Waiting Status, Planning Status, and Overdue Due-Date items). I've been playing around with some add-ons on Firefox that allow you to split the browser, but they are cumbersome. I'm now trying Chrome, and opening 4 different browser windows that I've tiled on the screen in quadrants (I use the Compiz grid applet for this). This is not ideal as each browser replicates the URL bar and the tab, and I don't have opening ths windows automated upon restart. Chrome is great in managing screen real estate, but this is not ideal. In Firefox I tried various extension to hide interface elements, but it was very clunky... Am wondering whether anyyone has tried to do similar with TD, and how they achieved what I'm going after? Am wondering whether someone has a good technique for accomplishing what I'm looking for?

• How should I sort images in an isometric game so that they appear in the correct order?

  This seems like a rather simple problem but I am having a lot of difficulty with it. What should I do to properly sort images in an isometric game? In a normal 2d top-down game one could use the screen y axis to sort the images. In this example the trees are properly sorted but the isometric walls are not. Example image: sorted by screen y Wall2 is one pixel below wall1 therefore it is drawn after wall1. If I sort by the isometric y axis the walls appear in the correct order but the trees do not. • Cannot login to newly created user account

  Trying to switch accounts to my newly created account I get a black screen and then it takes me back to the main login screen after entering the correct password. Upon logging into my previously existing account I get: "System Program Problem Detected" Details: Executable path /usr/bin/Xorg Package: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.1 Details: Crash ... (tons more, but no way to copy paste or save) When I try to su su -l penner I get: No directory, logging in with HOME=/ I manually created the home directory and this error goes away but still no luck with the login. Seems something has gone wrong with the user creation? How can I correct this?

• No Grapical log in or anything just terminal code!!

  I just install the unity alpha state 3, and i came across two errors, one stating it could not install a desktop feature or so and the other just had some errors that i had snap shot the error. When it says it was complete I restarted it and after it booted up, i see a long line of boot codes and then it stop with log in name and the after i put my log in name it ask for a password, but the thing is that their was no graphical lil window having my picture and my name, all I see was codes from terminal even after it admitted me in. Black screen white coding like it was a terminal on full screen only every thing was via terminal!!! HELP!!!!

• Dual boot problem - Ubuntu windows 7

  I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop. Recently, I decided to install Ubuntu on my main desktop PC (dual boot with windows 7). I downloaded the Ubuntu installer for windows and installed it (it's now showing Ubuntu in the installed software in my W7 control panel). However, when I tried to boot Ubuntu, after the boot loader and the login screen, my screen splitted in half. I was not able to see the icons and the launcher. I was also not able to do anything. I uninstalled Ubuntu and tried again twice. Same thing/results. Then, I created a partition in W7 and installed Ubuntu on it. Unfortunately, it's doing the same thing. I never saw something like this. Any idea??? Thanks for your help and support.

When I install ATI driver in Ubuntu 12.04 via "Additional Driver", then I can't shutdown Ubuntu, it showed blank (black) screen and my laptop still run. Sometimes, my screen like that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9_iygesbBM But when I install Ubuntu 10.04 and install ATI driver via "Additional Driver", it's very good and no trouble I've seen. It's sweet but 10.04 is old and is supported to 4/2013. So I want to know why Ubuntu 10.04 works good better than 12.04 with ATI driver (in my case)?

• Question about JPanel "transition" for Java Swing

  I want to make like a sort of main menu (in GUI). When the user clicks the start button, the screen transition into another "screen" (JPanel). This image will make it easier to understand. http://i.imgur.com/Cfdry.png Currently, I have a MainMenu extends JPanel and that gets added into a driver class with a JFrame. I can't figure how to switch to another class like Game extends JPanel. So when the user clicks the start button in MainMenu, I want it to somehow hide itself and the Game to show itself. Thanks.

• Windows Phone 8 Announcement

  As if the Surface announcement on Monday wasn’t exciting enough, today Microsoft announce that Windows Phone 8 will be coming this fall.  That itself is great news, but the features coming were like confetti flying in all different directions.  Given this speed I couldn’t capture every feature they covered.  A summary of what I did capture is listed below starting with their eight main features. Common Core The first thing that they covered is that Windows Phone 8 will share a core OS with Windows 8.  It will also run natively on multiple cores.  They mentioned that they have run it on up to 64 cores to this point.  The phones as you might expect will at least start as dual core.  If you remember there were metrics saying that Windows Phone 7 performed operations faster on a single core than other platforms did with dual cores.  The metrics they showed here indicate that Windows Phone 8 runs faster on comparable dual core hardware than other platforms. New Screen Resolutions Screen resolution has never been an issue for me, but it has been a criticism of Windows Phone 7 in the media.  Windows Phone 8 will supports three screen resolutions: WVGA 800 x 480, WXGA 1280 x 768, and 720 1280x720.  Hopefully this makes pixel counters a little happier. MicroSD Support This was one of my pet peeves when I got my Samsung Focus. With Windows Phone 8 the operating system will support adding MicroSD cards after initial setup.  Of course this is dependent on the hardware company on implementing it, but I think we have seen that even feature phone manufacturers have not had a problem supporting this in the past. NFC NFC has been an anticipated feature for some time.  What Microsoft showed today included the fact that they didn’t just want it to be for the phone.  There is cross platform NFC functionality between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.  The demos , while possibly a bit fanciful, showed would could be achieved even in a retail environment.  We are getting closer and closer to a Minority Report world with these technologies. Wallet Windows Phone 8 isn’t the first platform to have a wallet concept.  What they have done to differentiate themselves is to make it sot that it is not dependent on a SIM type chip like other platforms.  They have also expanded the concept beyond just banks to other types of credits such as airline miles. Nokia Mapping People have been envious of the Lumia phones having the Nokia mapping software.  Now all Windows Phone 8 devices will use NavTeq data and will have the capability to run in an offline fashion.  This is a major step forward from the Bing “touch for the next turn” maps. IT Administration The lack of features for enterprise administration and deployment was a complaint even before the Windows Phone 7 was released.  With the Windows Phone 8 release such features as Bitlocker and Secure boot will be baked into the OS. We will also have the ability to privately sign and distribute applications. Changing Start Screen Joe Belfiore made a big deal about this aspect of the new release.  Users will have more color themes available to them and the live tiles will be highly customizable. You will have the ability to resize and organize the tiles in a more dynamic way.  This allows for less important tiles or ones with less information to be made smaller.  And There Is More So what other tidbits came out of the presentation?  Later this summer the API for WP8 will be available.  There will be developer events coming to a city near you.  Another announcement of interest to developers is the ability to write applications at a native code level.  This is a boon for game developers and those who need highly efficient applications. As a topper on the cake there was mention of in app payment. On the consumer side we also found out that all updates will be available over the air.  Along with this came the fact that Microsoft will support all devices with updates for at least 18 month and you will be able to subscribe for early updates.  Update coming for Windows Phone 7.5 customers to WP7.8.  The main enhancement will be the new live tile features.  The big bonus is that the update will bypass the carriers.  I would assume though that you will be brought up to date with all previous patches that your carrier may not have released. • Does anyone know of any work being done on EEE transformer?

  I recently got a (few) nexus 7's to install and enjoy ubuntu on. Which is great and all, but from what I've read online and the issues I have experienced myself the Nexus 7 has way to many serious defects. Such as: Audio jack not working Screen lifting Screen ghosting out (The very first one) Instant drop in battery life (happened to one of mine) Internal memory malfunctions (The latest issue I've had, the internal memory went completely bad) If you need to read other horror stories you can simply check out XDA developers forum, lots of people are having issues. I'd really like to enjoy ubuntu on a different device, I think the Transformer prime would make way more sense (usability and stability wise). Have there been any hacks/mods to get it running on this device?

• Ubuntu 13.10 Security Key

  I was attempting to install Ubuntu 13.10 today and it came up with a screen asking for me to setup a security key. In the first place, I'm not sure what a security key is, but It said I would have to enter it everytime I booted Ubuntu so I assume it's the same thing as a logon password in Windows 8. Is there anyway I can bypass this step without setting up a security key or logon password? I hate these things and have always avoided them in Windows. I don't need them as there is never anyone but myself and my wife on our computers. We are retired, no children or nieces, nephews, friends, etc. who ever use our computer and we don't have any security information such as SS #, etc. on it. Also, I quit the installation at this point but I was not seeing any of the screen prompts as listed in the setup instructions on the Ubuntu website. Has the setup for Ubuntu 13.10 changed since these instructions were written? Thanks

  I play alot of COD4. And can see tracers for gunfire, missles, care packages fall from helicopters etc. There is alot of activity. I am curious to know the algorithm (at a high level) that manages all this action when you have 20 people on a map shooting each other to death ? This question touches on the subject but doesn't ask for a more in-depth answer as to how you the developers go about calculating and transmitting movement and collision detection for projectiles, be it missles/bullets or any other object that is flying through the air in real-time.

• openGL Camera setup for Zoom in/out centered at point under cursor

  I am trying to implement a zoom in/out navigation mode in a openGL 3dViewer. I was able to implement zoom functionality centered at screen center just by moving eye towards the center in perspective mode. Now i am trying to do the zoom centered at arbitrary position under the cursor. I am unable to figure out how should i move my camera forward and backward such that point under cursor remains at the same screen coordinates after zoom in/out. Any help would be appreciated. Below are the images which show the desired effect. Just to mention, I am working in a perspective mode with eye target and up vectors to control camera. Same effect i found in google sketchup and 'zoom to mouse position' setting in blender.

  I cant work out how to use the rectangle bounds in libgdx I am currently using the superJumper example and have 2or 3 examples with that are pause Bounds = new Rectangle(320 - 64, 480 - 64, 64, 64); this is the pause button in the top right corner resume Bounds = new Rectangle(160 - 96, 240, 192, 36); this is a rectangle resume button in the middle of the page in the menu that comes up when the pause button is pressed. basically my question is aimed at the 360 -64 and 160 -96 because I don't know why this is used I need to create a rectangle that covers the left side of the screen and the same on the right because I want to create a on screen buttons, I have already created the does for these buttons and I have managed to get them to work but I can move the rectangles to where I want. • Plugging two external screens to laptop via VGA and HDMI

  I have an Asus U30JC laptop with a VGA and HDMI ports. I can connect my external screen (1920x1200) to either of those ports but I wonder if I would be able to use two screens at the same time, one plugged to the VGA and the other to the HDMI socket. Any ideas? Where should I find out? • How do I get my folders back on my desktop?

  Using the 12.04 version. This morning the Update Manager popped up, I clicked it and it said some items will be un-installed and some will be upgraded and new ones will be installed. I did it and restarted. On restart, I entered my password about 5 times and it said it was incorrect. I changed the shell from Gnome to Ubuntu and logged on then changed it back to Gnome and I was able to log on. However, all my folders on the screen are gone but they appear under Desktop in the Home folder. How do I get then back on the screen?

  I am not sure if i have posted it to right place, so if no please don't judge me, I am a newbie. I installed Ubuntu 13.04 and I am happy with it. I have two OS's in dual boot. Ubuntu and Windows 7. in Ubuntu I have 2 problems. The first one is when I suspend my system I cannot resume it again. It sometimes show me the password screen (user names and etc. (sorry i don't know the exact name of it)) and sometimes just a blank screen. what can be the problem? The second one is this: When I hit ALT+F2 it looks like this ( but not always. when I restart the system everything is OK till about 30-40 minutes. and then it looks like this. Please help, I really like Ubuntu but these 2 problems ruin my plans about it. Thanks

• Radeon HD5670 hangs after login

  Thanks in advance for your advices. I installed, Ubuntu 12.04 today, on my PC with a Radeon hd5670 graphics card. The first error I encountered, (just like the first time Unity came out - after witch I waited to try Ubuntu again until now) is, that it hanged after login at the desktop wallpaper, with only the mouse cursor. Well actually the first problem was with the live CD, but I managed to install it, using the install now, not the try now. Live CD has the same problem, as after install. So, after installing and getting the error, I searched of course before asking this:) I found this: Ubuntu hangs at purple screen The accepted answer there helped me to get to this. (note, that the below picture is a screen taken from a working desktop, and then erased the parts that don't show on mine.) Note that there is nothing at the top except the brown bar. No shutdown button, no nothing. The system hangs, I can't click on anything, I can only wiggle around with my mouse XD

• Max Brightness in ubuntu lower when compared to windows

  I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my (new) ThinkPad Edge330. Everything worked quite well so far. I've noticed that the screen wasn't that bright and was a bit disappointed of the ThinkPad, but then I realized that the brightness was much better on a parallel windows 7 installation I did later on. I already used this tip: Max brightness on NetBook I did increase the brightness to an acceptable level (could be the actual max. brightness, or is there a way to increase it even further?) But now unfortunately I cannot change the screen brightness at all anymore. Not by using the FN keys or in the system settings.

  I will tell you the whole story,one night when i was using KDE on Ubuntu 10.10 Kwin crashed then i shut down the os next day when i booted it the display came completely garbled and i went to safe graphics mode ,it worked and in reinstalled the Nvidia drivers and then restarted .Then immediatly, It said No init found Busybox XX.XX then I thought ill do a fresh install I inserted the ubuntu cd provided to me by Canonical.When i pressed 'try ubuntu without installing' instead of the graphic boot screen i saw.Ubuntu 10.10 in regular text and a progress bar few seconds after that the screen was flooded with error messages first alot of white then red.I then went to my win7 installation and saw a website which told me to find a Ext3 reader and format the ubuntu partition and the swap.I did that and when i restarted. GRUB configuration not found grub> Then it took my win 7 ERD and restored 7's bootloder Xp and 7 were working i put in the livecd again,Same error,Now usin my seven,Please help geeks,Ive even tried Knoppix,Fedora,Debiane.t.c they wont boot and i want to retain my win 7 and winxp partitions,I really miss linux.

• How do you get the total asset size (or total resource size) in an Android game?

  In an Android Java project, there are two folders, asset and res. To me, I usually put some stuffs, like PNG files, sound files, etc. in either one of the two folder. When resources are increasingly becoming more and more in those folders, the time it takes to load them will increase. Therefore, a loading screen is a must in these situation. The total size is to be used in a loading screen, so that I can guess the average time it takes to load each resources, from 0 bytes to its individual resource file size. I only know that by adding all individual sizes in a respective order, I will then obtain the total asset or res folder size, simply by adding them up. So, when it comes to getting the total file size from either folder, how do you obtain their individual resource/object sizes, respectively? Thanks in advance.

• System freeze after opening Wi-Fi menu can boot into the machine and use Internet in recovery mode

  So right now sitting in front of my Alienware area 51 desktop. It has a Broadcom Netlink BCM 5784M gigabit ethernet PCI E card. Most of the time able to get through the login screen and to the main screen if I click on the wireless settings on the top right-hand corner the system immediately freezes the cursor does not move at all keyboards are unresponsive. I was doing some quick Google searching and I found a suggestion to boot into recovery mode I did this and did a apt-get Distribution update which ran successfully installed then I rebooted into the regular system same thing I'm pretty sure it's the network card because even if I don't click the settings if a network related dialog opens such as disconnection or connection the system again immediately freezes. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 ** update 1 ** Just was able to use my system for a little bit however when I went into Firefox and hit the web it again froze so obviously a driver problem but I'm not sure how to get drivers for Broadcom which apparently according to the description on stack-overflow is terrible Any ideas? Sorry for lack of punctuation on an ipad.
