  • How do you manage feature requests and software changes?

    I am a Software Engineer and over the past few years I have become the de-facto software project manager simply because there isn't one. So to keep our sanity in the R&D/Engineering department, customers have become accustomed to coming to me with their requests. I have no experience in this realm so it is my first time acting as a project manager for software projects. I have managed other things but not software. So, how do you manage software projects and mark priorities? Requests come in at infrequent intervals so we very well could be working on something for someone else and then another person comes in with a "rush" job that needs working on. Is it easier to just say First Come, First Serve or is it the person with the most money?

  • Why should I use Bower? [closed]

    I can fully appreciate the benefits of a package manager like Python PIP, Node npm, or Ruby Gems since they're doing much more than adding files to your applications path. Maybe I'm missing the point, or I'm being obtuse, but here are the negatives I can see: Separate step when building a project Separate dependency to install via another package manager (yo dawg) More clutter in the projects root with bower.json and / or .bowerrc Reliance on the registry being up to date, correct, and available Some imports / references to things like images won't work The positives I can see are these: I don't have to download the dependencies manually Optionally install packages as part of scaffolding based on user prompts or the like I'd really like to know of any benefits I'm unaware of, and I should say I'm not trying to be provocative I genuinely want to know.

  • Broken BURG install after backup/restore

    Long story short: BURG is stuck in text mode and I can't seem to get it back to the eye-candy. I have purged and then re-installed to no avail. I am running 12.04. The long story: I originally installed onto 12.04 using Super-boot-manager (BURG-manager) and then stopped using it in favour of GRUB because I had too many entries. I then had to backup and restore Ubuntu (partition was deleted and re-created) due to unrelated issues. I re-installed GRUB2 and booted into Ubuntu to re-install BURG, but after re-booting it appears to be stuck in text mode (looks exactly like GRUB 1). Any ideas? I know I'm not supposed to be using it on 12.04 (I think) but it worked before, so what's up?

  • WP7&ndash;Samsung Owners Should Hold Off on the Update

    Microsoft released an update for WP7 that’s meant to improve updating the devices going forward. They’ve identified a glitch though, specifically with Samsung phones. From Winrumors: A number of Windows Phone 7 users applied the patch on Monday and some Samsung Omnia owners devices have been left in a “bricked” state. Devices simply instruct users to connect them to a PC, hard resetting the device or connecting it to a PC does not appear to solve the issue. Microsoft has also been advising users with broken devices to return them to stores for exchange. The scary thing about this is the resolution: return the “broken” devices to stores for exchange. Many Samsung Focus owners in Canada purchased unlocked phones from the US, and supposedly that act alone voided the warranty. So applying the update has very dire implications for those who might be left with a very pretty brick. I’m going to wait until there are successful installs of the patched update before going ahead with it on my device.

  • Design for an interface implementation that provides additional functionality

    There is a design problem that I came upon while implementing an interface: Let's say there is a Device interface that promises to provide functionalities PerformA() and GetB(). This interface will be implemented for multiple models of a device. What happens if one model has an additional functionality CheckC() which doesn't have equivalents in other implementations? I came up with different solutions, none of which seems to comply with interface design guidelines: To add CheckC() method to the interface and leave one of its implementations empty: interface ISomeDevice { void PerformA(); int GetB(); bool CheckC(); } class DeviceModel1 : ISomeDevice { public void PerformA() { // do stuff } public int GetB() { return 1; } public bool CheckC() { bool res; // assign res a value based on some validation return res; } } class DeviceModel2 : ISomeDevice { public void PerformA() { // do stuff } public int GetB() { return 1; } public bool CheckC() { return true; // without checking anything } } This solution seems incorrect as a class implements an interface without truly implementing all the demanded methods. For the device that supports CheckC(): to add the logic of CheckC() into the logic of another method that is present in the interface. This solution is not always possible. So, what is the correct design to be used in such cases? Maybe creating an interface should be abandoned altogether in favor of another design?

  • Changing internal home network ip address for connected devices

    I have a few computers at home. For each of the computers, I can see the internal home network ip address on any given device by typing in ifconfig in the terminal. If the device is connected to the home network via ethernet connection or via the built-in wireless connections in laptops, the internal ip address for each of the devices seems to be 192.168.0.X. However, when I connect one of the devices using an external usb modem wireless adapter, which connects to the home network through wireless, when I check the ip address via ifconfig, for some reason it gets assigned 192.168.42.X instead. Why are the ethernet and build in wireless connections getting 192.168.0.X, but the external usb wireless adapter gets 192.168.42.X? Most importantly, is it possible to force it to get an internal ip address of 192.168.0.X?

  • How to sync calendar with android without google?

    Hi folks, is there a way to sync an Ubuntu calendar application like Thunderbird Lightning or Evolution with an Android device without using google-calendar? At the moment I am syncing my Thunderbird-Lightning calendars on different computers via Dropbox, what is much more reliable than google-calendar. Another big advantage over google-calendar is, that I can access my appointments offline as well, since the calendar files are synced onto the harddrive of each computer by Dropbox. I'd like to access those calendars via my android device as well. The Dropbox-app for android does not support automatic syncing yet, so it seems like I have to use another service. Apart from that I guess I need to know an android app, that can access a calendar-file stored in ics-format. Thanks in advance YSN

  • A command-line clipboard copy and paste utility?

    In Windows I used command-line clipboard copy-and-paste utilities... pclip.exe and gclip.exe These were UnixUtils ports for Windows (but they only handled plain text). There were a couple of other native Windows utils which could write/extracy any format. I've looked for something similar in Synaptic Package Manager, but I can't find anything. Is there something there, that I've missed? ... or maybe this is available in bash scripting? The type of utility I'd like will be able to read/write via std-in/std-out or file-in/file-out, and handle Unicode/Rich-text/Picture/etc clipboard formats... Late Edit: NB: I'm not after a clipboard manager.

    Wacom bamboo connect CTL470 - "no tablet detected ..." I downloaded and attempted to install drivers and software -- I am relatively new in ubuntu and downloaded, extracted,ran in terminal but could not successfully install drivers and software for this device. All of this took up a good deal of space on the drive. Manual compilation failed. I need some help. How do I install so as to use this device? Or please direct me to a suitable (relative beginner) "how to". i have downloaded several packages but the install fails in Software Center and Synaptic. System: HP a1220n Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.93 GHz OS Type 32 bit Ubuntu 11.10

  • 12.04 Ambiance dark side bar issue when clicking folder on desktop

    Concerning an updated custom ambiance theme: why is there no dark side bar when I click on a folder, like the home folder icon on the desktop, but the theme works as planned when I type nautilus in the terminal to open the home folder or when opening a folder up as root? Permissions issue perhaps? Note: I am using Cinnamon instead of Unity and I noticed it uses the Nemo file manager instead of Nautilus and I suspected that it was causing me the grief. I uninstalled it and now am using Nautilus only as the file manager. I found this out when I typed: sudo killall nemo and the problem went away. I'll see how this goes (and hopefully cinnamon doesn't care about it...) Has anyone else had any issues with this?

  • Why are the packages found with apt-get always horribly out of date?

    Whenever I use the package manager, it can only ever find really old versions of stuff. Example: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install postgresql The best it can do is version 8.4 (3 years out of date). Trying to get a later version, I get: $ sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.1 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package postgresql-9.1 I experience the same issue whenever I use the package manager, so I usually just download and build things from source. How can I make it find up-to-date software?

  • Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

    After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be? When Ubuntu starts to boot up, a message will appear in my screen and it's something like: T#s..... does not exist Sorry, I couldn't read all the message. Then another message pop-out after Ubuntu loading screen this time the message is this: Gave up waiting for root device. With this in mind, I put together two screen watches on Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c command line interface, or EM CLI as it is also known. There is a wealth of information on any topic that you choose to read about, from manual pages to coding documents…might I even say blog posts? In our busy lives it is so nice to just sit back with a short video, watch and learn enough to dive in. Doing more in less time, is the essence of EM CLI. It enables you to script fundamental and complex administrative tasks in an elegant way, thanks to the Jython scripting language. Repetitive tasks can be scripted and reused again and again. Sure, a Graphical User Interface provides a more intuitive step by step approach to tasks, and it provides a way of quickly becoming familiar with a product and its many features, and it is definitely the way to go when viewing performance data and historical trending…but for repetitive and complex tasks, scripting is the way to go! Lets us take the everyday task of creating an administrator. Using EM CLI in interactive mode the command could look like this.. emcli>create_user(name='jan.doe', type='EXTERNAL_USER') This command creates an administrator called jan.doe which is an externally authenticated user, possibly LDAP or SSO, defined by the EXTERNAL_USER tag. The create_user procedure takes many arguments; see the documentation for more information. Now, where EM CLI really shines and shows power is in creating multiple users. Regardless of the number, tens or thousands, the effort is the same. With the use of a standard programming construct, a loop, you can place your create_user() procedure within it. Using a loop allows you to iterate through a previously created list, creating new users until the list is complete. Using EM CLI in Script mode, your Jython loop would look something like this… for user in list_of_users:       create_user(name=user, expire=’true’, password=’welcome123’) This Jython code snippet iterates through a previously defined list of names, list_of_users, and iterates through the list, taking each name, user in this case, and creates an administrator sets the password to welcome123, but forces the user to reset it when they first login. This is only one of over four hundred procedures created to expose Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c functionality in a powerful and programmatic way. It is a few months since we released EM CLI with scripting option. We are seeing many users adapt to this fun and powerful way of using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. What are the first steps?   • Connman not connecting to internet

    I wanted to try connman as I heard it will be replacing network manager. I kinda liked its looks and feel but the problem is I donot get connected to internet. I am using ADSL and it connects to my adsl router but doesnot ping google or any other sites. I tried to change the default gateway as well as use static ips but to no avail. It displays I am wired but doesnot open any sites or ping to any external sites except for 198.168.1.1 which is my router ip. Can anyone help ? Some things that I have found through research: 100 - 150 Chars long is ideal 3-5 words in your url, according to Matt Cutts Use .htaccess to force clean urls Do not duplicate data (important) Clean and precise, describing the content Use hyphens On the homepage, I try to detect the users location based on IP, but this isn't always accurate, and not always reliable. So until they put in their city/location, I can't always use this structure but this is potentially work-able. For Searching, a form post to a results page: domain.com/jobs/[city]/[search] ie: domain.com/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ OR domain.com/search/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ or do I remove the word JOBS and just use Search. I trying to keep good search terms in the URL, but also keep it clean and concise. Can someone give me some feedback and thoughts to 'why'...

  • How do I install the Intel Graphics driver in my system?

    Can someone help me out and explain or point me in the right direction on how to check video drivers and see if my video card running okay? I had 10.04 installed on my Thinkpad r61 with Compiz Manager and life was great, until the machine took water damage. I bought an ASUS (X54H) since and am trying out 12.04, but the desktop just doesn't look right. I always struggled with video driver installation. There are no proprietary drivers available in the hardware manager. When I run lspci | grep VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I will greatly appreciate your help. I want to use Linux more, but like I said video drivers appear to be my biggest concern. I have also tried 12.04 on my desktop PC, but again failed to configure video card, so switched back to Windows 7.

  • Does dist-upgrade require PPA software to be uninstalled first?

    Hi all, I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 with quite a few PPAs. Amongst the PPAs there is Guiodic (Guido Iodice) Lucid quasi-rolling :) PPA which brings most recent versions of many programs to my desktop. My steps: sudo update-manager -d click on upgrade on the appearing window wait for the magic to happen: prepare to upgrade and setting new software channels during 'calculating the changes' I will get the following error message in the panel An error occurred, please run Package Manager form the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Marking the upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolver generated breaks, this may be caused by help packages.)'This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies When I check Synaptic/apt-get I can't find any errors or hint toward broken packages Could this error be because of many PPA versions being newer than 10.04 original versions?

    My powertop reports this for the two audio codec components. 4.85 W 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D3: Intel 4.85 W 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D0: Realtek I think 10 W for audio is too high. Can somebody please suggest me a way to reduce the power consumption? It'd be nice if someone could educate me on this, I have an idea about codecs in general but I have no clue about their internals?   • ubuntu 12.04 ambiance dark side bar issue when clicking folder on desktop

    ubuntu 12.04 gnome: concerning an updated custom ambiance theme: why is there no dark side bar when I click on a folder, like the home folder icon on the desktop, but the theme works as planned when I type "nautilus" in the terminal to open the home folder or when opening a folder up as root? Permissions issue perhaps? note: i am using cinnamon instead of unity and i noticed it uses the nemo file manager instead of nautilus and i suspected that it was causing me the grief. so i uninstalled it and now am using nautilus only as the file manager. i found this out when i typed: "sudo killall nemo" and the problem went away. i'll see how this goes... (and hopefully cinnamon doesn't care about it...) has anyone else had any issues with this?
