Installation guide asks me to install GLib first, and when I try to compile it using the make command I get errors. • Oracle releases new Java Embedded products

  With less than one week to go to JavaOne 2012, we've spiced things up a little by releasing not one but two net new embedded Java products. This is an important step towards realizing the vision of Java as the standard platform for the Internet of Things that I outlined in a recent blog post. The two new products are: Java ME Embedded 3.2. Based on same code as the widely deployed Oracle Java Wireless Client for feature phones, this new product provides a Java ME implementation optimized for very small microcontroller-based devices and adds - among other things - a new Device Access API that enables interaction with peripherals common in edge devices such as various types of sensors. In addition to the new Java ME Embedded platform, we have also released an update of the Java ME SDK which adds support for the development of small embedded devices. Java Embedded Suite 7.0. This is an integrated middleware stack for embedded devices, incorporating Java SE Embedded and versions of JavaDB, GlassFish and a Web Services stack optimized for remote operation and small footprint. A typical Internet of Things (or M2M) infrastructure contains three types of compute nodes: The edge device which is typically a sensor or control point of some kind. These devices can be connected directly to a backend through a mobile network if they are installed in - for example - a remote vending machine; or, they can be part of a local short-range network and be connected to the backend through a more powerful gateway device. A gateway is the second type of compute node and acts as an aggregator and control point for a local network. A good example of this could be a generalized home Internet access point, or home gateway. Gateways are mostly using normal wall power and are used for multiple applications, deployed by multiple service providers. Finally, the last type of compute node is the normal enterprise or cloud backend. Java ME Embedded and Java Embedded Suite are perfect base software stacks for the edge devices and the gateway respectively, providing the Java promise of a platform independent runtime and a complete set of libraries as well as allowing a programmer to focus on the business logic rather than plumbing. We are very thrilled with these new releases that open up exciting opportunities for Java developers to extend services and enterprise applications in ways that will make organizations more efficient and touch our daily lives. • How to Format a USB Drive in Ubuntu Using GParted

  If a USB hard drive or flash drive is not properly formatted, then it will not show up in the Ubuntu Places menu, making it hard to interact with. We’ll show you how to format a USB drive using the tool GParted. Note: Formatting a USB drive will destroy any data currently stored on it. If you think that your USB drive is already properly formatted, but Ubuntu just isn’t picking it up, try unplugging it and plugging it back in to a different USB slot, or restarting your machine with the device plugged in on start-up. Open a terminal by clicking on Applications in the top-left of the screen, then Accessories > Terminal. GParted should be installed by default, but we’ll make sure it’s installed by entering the following command in the terminal: sudo apt-get install gparted To open GParted, enter the following command in the terminal: sudo gparted Find your USB drive in the drop-down box at the top right of the GParted window. The drive should be unallocated – if it has a valid partition on it, then you may be looking at the wrong drive. Note: Make sure you’re on the correct drive, as making changes on the wrong hard drive with GParted can delete all data on a hard drive! Assuming you’re on the right drive, right-click on the unallocated grey block and click New. In the window that pops up, change the File System to fat32 for USB Flash Drives, NTFS for USB Hard Drives that will be used in Windows, or ext3/ext4 for USB Hard Drives that will be used exclusively in Linux. Add a label if you’d like, and then click Add. Click the green checkmark and then the Apply button to apply the changes. GParted will now format your drive. If you’re formatting a large USB Hard Drive, this can take some time. Once the process is done, you can close GParted, and the drive will now show up in the Places menu. Clicking on the drive will mount it and open it in a File Browser window. It will also add a shortcut to the drive on the Desktop by default. Your USB drive is now ready to store your files! • Find a Faster DNS Server with Namebench

  One way to speed up your Internet browsing experience is using a faster DNS server. Today we take a look at Namebench, which will compare your current DNS server against others out there, and help you find a faster one. Namebench Download the file and run the executable (link below). Namebench starts up and will include the current DNS server you have configured on your system. In this example we’re behind a router and using the DNS server from the ISP. Include the global DNS providers and the best available regional DNS server, then start the Benchmark. The test starts to run and you’ll see the queries it’s running through. The benchmark takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. After it’s complete you’ll get a report of the results. Based on its findings, it will show you what DNS server is fastest for your system. It also displays different types of graphs so you can get a better feel for the different results. You can export the results to a .csv file as well so you can present the results in Excel. Conclusion This is a free project that is in continuing development, so results might not be perfect, and there may be more features added in the future.   My music is stored on a Synology NAS and Rhythmbox has access via NFS to the music files; works perfect. But how can I share the Rhythmbox playlists? I tried to store the playlists.xml file on the NAS and created a link in the home/user/.local/share/rhythmbox directory to the playlists.xml on the NAS but Rhythmbox converts the link to a local file. Any idea on how to force Rhythmbox to use the link to the playlists.xml file on the NAS?

The relevant bit of fstab: # Auto-mount windows drive UUID=0C1C51021C50E86A /media/windows ntfs defaults 0 0 # Auto-mount the Music folder /media/windows/Documents\040and\040Settings/Foo\040Name/My\040Documents/My\040Music/Foo's\040Music /home/foo/Music none bind 0 0 Note that I'm using the \040 to escape spaces, but man ascii doesn't (from what I see) have an escape character for a '. I've tried \047 to no avail Thoughts?

• Is Btrfs in Maverick considered stable?

  I'm upgrading my laptop to Maverick (10.10) and I noticed btrfs is an option for the filesystem. I read a while ago that the Ubuntu team weren't sure if it was going to be stable for Maverick. Does anyone know (with references) if it was approved for stable use? Any other pros and cons? For the moment I've made my root partition ext4 and my home partition btrfs, but I could reinstall. My laptop is a secondary computer.

• Mount VMware Shared Folder to Ubuntu 12.04.3

  I tried to create a shared folder to my Ubuntu 12.04.3 VM using VMware 5 from my Mac but I don't see the folder anywhere. I've tried to use some commands as suggested here and here, but nothing is still showing... I just get the error: Error: cannot canonicalize mount point: No such file or directory So I make the folder I'm trying to mount to or just try to mount directly to my home folder and get this error now: Error: cannot mount filesystem: No such device Any help is appreciated.

  I'm using the following instruction to install and configure Hadoop on Ubuntu 10.10. http://www.michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-single-node-cluster/#installation I tried to save the compressed tar.gz file to /usr/local/ but it just won't save. I've tried saving the tar.gz in my home folder and desktop and copying the files to the desired folder, but I get an error that tells me I don't have permission. How do I save and extract a tar.gz folder to /usr/local/hadoop?

• Root username is different to admin username

  I have somehow changed my root username which seems to have caused my system to disallow me to mount USB, CDROM. My normal username is jenchris, however if I type: su root (and enter the password) then it shows root@jenchris-H55M-UD2H:/home/jenchris# (PLEASE NOTE THE HASH AT THE END OF THE USERNAME!) I think I accidentally hit the hash key at some point whilst typing my username.... This is causing huge problems as I have lost lots of permissions, please can someone help?
