  I'm having trouble understanding the following syntax: public class SortedList< T extends Comparable< ? super T> > extends LinkedList< T > I see that class SortedList extends LinkedList. I just don't know what T extends Comparable< ? super T> means. My understanding of it so far is that type T must be a type that implements Comparable...but what is "< ? super T "?

• Breakpoint pointing out "objc_autoreleaseNoPool"

  So I'm debugging an app in preperation for its app so release, and I enabled a universal breakpoint for "All Exceptions". Since then, everytime I run the app, the console prints: Catchpoint 2 (throw)Pending breakpoint 1 - "objc_exception_throw" resolved objc[11765]: Object 0x8f18ff0 of class __NSCFLocale autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug objc[11765]: Object 0x8f190a0 of class __NSCFNumber autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug objc[11765]: Object 0x8f1fef0 of class __NSCFLocale autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug Literally printed 3 times. I have no idea what this means but it looks bad. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Creating an n tiered application

  I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

But I am getting only last expression pattern , which means fifth expression of if condition . Here I know that it is giving only one pattern because last pattern matching in if condition. But I want to get all matched patterns Any one help me out of this problem.

  In our project files, if there are binary files, such as .doc, .xls, .jpg, and we choose to not keep their past revisions (just keeping a latest version is ok), is there a way to tell SVN, Git, or Mercurial or some other tool to skip the revisions for these files or for a particular folder? Say, there is a 4MB .doc file that I need to check in hundred of times, but I don't really care so much about its past versions. So if the system keeps 100 revisions of it, that's already 400MB... checking in 300 times means 1.2GB for 1 file and that's not good. Only the latest version is good so that everybody can sync to it.

• "Use windows xp style dpi scaling" disables automatic auto-hide of taskbar on W7. Workaround?

  We noticed that on W7 with DPI set to 125% or to 100% with ("Use windows xp style dpi scaling") turned off, our fullscreen mode (which sets the client rect of our window = desktop rect of the main monitor) no longer hides the task bar like it does for other settings. (The setting can be found in the Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display section after clicking on the "Set custom text size (DPI)" link) I found the following interesting article: http://www.mathies.com/weblog/?p=908 So I set out to try to work around the bug in other means than manually hiding/restoring the taskbar visibility but so far I've failed and currently believe it's a bug in W7 (and possibly vista). The following applications also fail to work properly in fullscreen mode (the taskbar is still visible): * Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 * Microsoft Word 2007 * Adobe Reader 9.1.3 These apps work (probably by hiding the task bar through the WIN32 API): * Powerpoint Slide Show I also tried creating a brand new MFC-based app and use its "SetFullScreenMode()" functionality but it fails in the same way as all other apps on the list.   Hello, I'm no Java guy, so I ask myself what this means: public Button(Light light) { this.light = light; } Is Button a method? I ask myself, because it takes an input parameter light. But if it was a method, why would it begin with a capital letter and has no return data type? Here comes the full example: public class Button { private Light light; public Button(Light light) { this.light = light; } public void press() { light.turnOn(); } } I know, this question is really trivial. However, I have nothing to do with Java and haven't found a description for the Button thing above. I'm just interested.

  Which is the best API to use when accessing a WebCam in .Net? (I know they can be webcam specific, I am willing to buy a new webcam if it means better results). I want to write a desktop application that will take video from a webcam and store it in MPEG4 formats (DivX, Xvid, etc...). I would also like to access bitmap stills from the device so I can do image comparison between frames. I have tried various libraries, and none have really been a great fit (some have performance issues (very inconsistent framerates), some have image quality limitations, some just crash out for seemingly no reason. I want to get high quality video (as high as I can get) and a decent framerate. My webcam is more than up to the job and I was hoping that there would be a nice Managed .Net library around that would help my cause. Are webcam APIs all just incredibly bad?

  I am trying to migrate data from an Informix database to MSSQL 2008. I've got quite a lot of data to move. I've been try multiple methods to get the data over, and so far SQLBulkCopy in multiple chunks seems to be the fastest that I can find. Does anyone know of a faster means of getting the data over? I'm trying to cut down on the transfer time so that on my cut-over date I don't run out of time to do the full cut-over. Thanks.

But HOW in the world do I create a .po-file? I downloaded POEdit but I can't see how to make this happen with that software. ANy help is greatly appreciated!

• iphone app photo upload to server from app threads

  I have an app that needs to upload a least 5 photos to a server using API call available with the server. For that I am planning to use threads which will take care of photo upload and the main process can go on with the navigation of views etc. What I cant decide is whether it is OK to spawn five separate threads in iphone or use a single thread that will do the upload. In the later cases obviously it will become quite slow. Basically an HTTP POST request will be made to the server with the NSMutableURLRequest object using NSCOnnection. More threads mean more complexity and sync issues, but I can try to write code as neat as possible if it means better performance than a single thread which is simple but is a real stopper if performance is considered. Anybody with any experience in this kinda app. ??

• Cannot use String.Empty as a default value for an optional parameter in C# - then what's the point?

  I am reading Effective C# by Bill Wagner. In Item 14 - Minimize Duplicate Initialization Logic, he shows the following example of using the new optional parameters feature in a constructor: public MyClass(int initialCount = 0, string name = "") Notice that he used "" instead of string.Empty. He comments: You'll note [in an example above] that the second constructor specified "" for the default value on the name parameter, rather than the more customary string.Empty. That's because string.Empty is not a compile-time constant. It is a static property defined in the string class. Because it is not a compile constant, you cannot use it for the default value for a parameter. If we cannot use the string.Empty static in all situations, then doesn't that defeat the purpose of it? I thought that we would use it to be sure that we have a system-independent means of referring to the empty string. Is my understanding wrong? Thanks.

  I'm working on application in Java that will maintain database of song lyrics in plain text and print out some songbooks/chordbooks(that is create PDF file from selected songs). I was planing that the Java application will generate source code for pdflatex and after compiling this source user will get PDF file. Lately I've run into a lot of problems because of latex limitation: fixed memory size (some pictures will also be drawn to PDF) - error when exceeded, no way to query end of line or and of page dynamically, it's very hard to override latex placement algorithm in a complex way,... see also some my other questions regarding latex. I come to conclusion that latex is not good option for automated PDF generation. So I need replacement. I need to be able to typeset: Chords over lyrics when the lyrics are in variable char width so I need to be able to measure text width Chord diagrams that means I'll have to draw quite complex pictures Each song on separate double page Different fonts etc. Thanks for all answers

  Hi there, I am currently working on a little backup script from some firebird databases and I've come up with a weird escaping problem that I don't seem to be able to solve. Here's the thing in my script I create a variable called sqllog in which I would like to put the output of a chain of commands, here it is. sqllog=echo "SELECT * FROM RDB\$DATABASE;" | isql -u SYSDBA -pass mypasswd localhost:mydatabase | tail -n 2 | head -n 1 | wc -l if I try to execute this in shell I get the following error Statement failed, SQLCODE = -204 Dynamic SQL Error -SQL error code = -204 -Table unknown -RDB -At line 1, column 15. Table unknown RDB means it didn't take my try to escape the $. thx for any help :)

• How does Play recognize a particular websocket message?

  I am looking at the websocket-chat example. It unveils much, but I still cannot get something. I understand how messages are received, processed and sent on the web page side. However, Play captures websocket messages by means of the receive method of an Akka actor. In the websocket-chat, there are several cases in this method, but I don't get, how does it know which websocket message should be mapped to which case. In fact, I don't understand the path that a websocket message follows upon entering Play's domain, how is it processed and how can different message types/kinds be sent from the webpage. I have not find any info or sources related to this. Could please someone explain this or point to some kind of a good reference? UPDATE: The link to the original example.

• How do I release an object allocated in a different AutoReleasePool ?

  Hi, I have a problem with the memory management in Objective-C. Say I have a method that allocates an object and stores the reference to this object as a member of the class. If I run through the same function a second time, I need to release this first object before creating a new one to replace it. Supposing that the first line of the function is: NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; This means that a different auto-release pool will be in place. The code to allocate the object is as follows: if (m_object != nil) [m_object release]; m_object = [[MyClass alloc] init]; [m_object retain]; The problem is that the program crashes when running the last line of the method: [pool release]; What am I doing wrong ?   Dear All! I have a datagrid which contains bid and ask - prices for currency-symbols. The data is updated every seconds. I update the data by creating a new collection of my viewmodel-entities and bind this collection to the datagrid every second. The problem is: Because my datagrid contains a template-column with a button "buy", this button is also recreated every second! This means, that when the user hovers the button, the hover-styles blinks, as the button is recreated every second. Additionally sometimes the click-event is not fired correctly, if the button is recreated while the user has his mouse-left-button pressed. Any suggestions, how to solve real-time-update a datagrid with button-columns?

  I want to write games that run on all the major platforms. I also want people to be able to play them by downloading a file and double clicking it. That means a single .exe/.app file. I'm happy to use OpenGL directly for graphics. What I don't know how to do is show a window, handle mouse/keyboard input and play sounds in a cross-platform manner. I don't really mind what the underlying language is, as long as it isn't C++ or Java. C#, Ruby or Python would be preferable, in that order :) Please, SO, save me from having to write Flash games!

• Generating code at compile-time using scripts

  Hello, I would ideally like to be able to add (very repetitive) C/C++ code to my actual code, but at compile time, code which would come from say, the stdout of a python script, the same way one does with macros. For example, let's say I want to have functions that depend on the public attributes of a given class, being able to just write the following in my C++ code would be a blessing: generate_boring_functions(FooBarClass,"FooBarClass.cpp") Is that feasible using conventional means? Or must I hack with Makefiles and temporary source files? Thanks.
