• Getting around the lack of GPT support with CentOS 5.4

  Here is my issue and I hoping that there is someone out there that has an answer so I don't end up stuck here at my co-location all day. Last night I came here and upgraded a server (Dell 2970) to have four 1TB Hard Drives in RAID 5 which leaves a 3TB block. I tried to partition this but keep getting an error that GPT is not supported so I found a site online telling me I need to run the dd command and right random data to /dev/sda. This is great (if it works) but taking forever. I have two more machines to upgrade today and not a chair in site. Does anyone have advice on how I can avoid this issue beforehand? • Can not su to normal user

  I have a centos 5.8 box with gitolite installed . It worked fine until I yesterday my gitolite didn't work. ( fatal the remote end hung up unexpectedly) I logged to the box using root account. and then su to git user but I can't. I test again by creating a new user , but I also can not su to that user. Any idea ?, thank you very much. P.S: I installed postfix the day before , but I'm not sure if postfix cause the problem.

• Excel Conditional Formatting Multiple Data Bars and Data Icons in one cell

  I am using Excel 2007 on a windows machine. I am attempting to place one data bar and one data icon into a cell under the conditional formatting. The issue is that I don't really want to have data icons or data bars for cells that have dates in the future and I only want to have data icons for dates in the at least one month in the past. This is what I have: This is what I want: I am using the EOMONTH function to determine the last day of the month for the conditional formatting calculations. For the data bar the formula is =EOMONTH(Now(), 4) and =EOMONTH(Now(), -1). The data icons formulas are =EOMONTH(Now(), -1) and =EOMONTH(Now(), -2) Is there a way in Excel 2007 to get rid of the data icons for all the dates in the future and lose the data bars when the date has past. • OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file.   How would you go about shortening approximately 5,000 permalinks? The links point to a remote media archiving server, and are unlikely to change. Example URLs: rtsp://foo-1.bar.com/xx/xx/xx/xx.rm http://media.foo.org/xx/xx/xx.mp4 The URLs are going to be stored in a local MySQL database, as such it's crucial that the URLs are in a manageable form (i.e bit.ly or ow.ly). There are bulk URL shortening services, but those only allow shortening of 100 links/day, which isn't technically feasible so I need to think of something else.

• Windows Server 2008 - unable to bind any TCP port

  OS: Win Server 2008 RC2 Windows firewall on (no effect when off) I have suddenly been plagued by an issue in which I cannot find any similar ones with a search. I am running about 20 game servers that bind to a UDP port, then bind to a TCP port 1 above the UDP port. Suddenly, a day ago, new TCP binds stopped functioning. Now, I have confirmed that other applications cannot listen on most ports. For example, I have a java program that I made a copy of, and tried the following ports: 33001, 23789, 89... completely random ports. As far as the applications already that have TCP bindings, such as HTTP and MySQL, only port 8080 was one port I discovered could work, and only for Apache. If applications would leave their default port they could not bind, however they returned to normal when the port was default. I've checked for listening applications through netstat and curports, also checked for any connections on these ports, and they're completely free.

• VMWare - persistent "Host memory status" alarm in vSphere

  I have a particular VMWare ESX 4.1 host that has a very persistent "Host memory status" alarm. This is running on an HP ProLiant DL360 G7 server. The HP ILO and System Management agents don't know any errors. If I clear the alarm in the vSphere client, it returns within a day. I've tried reseating DIMMs, however, the error does not indicate a problem with a specific module. There's another host in the cluster with an identical configuration. It's not exhibiting any issues. Any thoughts? This is touched on briefly on other forums (and here) with no clear resolution.

• Development Server Blocked Only from Home

  Recently I've been having an issue with my CentOS 6 test server running Apache and Webmin running on port 10000 where when I try accessing any part of the server - SSH/FTP and even my domains (I have two - both keep getting timeout errors) when I try accessing from any computer on my home network. However when I access via tethering or via my office networks everything loads fine. While the firewall is the first issue at mind, my router never was set to block any special ports, and even after adding port 10000 as a specific exception I'm having no luck. Also, I doubt this is an IP blacklisting issue because I have websites on other servers using CloudFlare for security and I haven't gotten any warnings. Any assistance is greatly apprecaiated. UPDATE: Just some extra details about the issue: My ISP to my knowledge only blocks off ports 25 and 80 for residential users to prevent them from running web servers - however this issue has only come up a day or two ago, before that I was using the server successfully for months. Also the server is not physically located in any of my workspaces - it's a VPS housed in a datacenter

• "Couldn't resolve host" for any external content

  On our site we run a few different scripts for various sites (uploading to amazon s3, data from chartbeat, script to count twitter followers) and all of them just stop working from time to time. They work most days, but then some days (like today) they all just stop working. This simple script to get follower count into PHP $url = "http://twitter.com/users/show/username"; $response = file_get_contents ( $url ); $t_profile = new SimpleXMLElement ( $response ); $count = $t_profile->followers_count; Just sits there for a couple minutes, then finally spits out an error that says "Couldn't resolve host". Any script we use for an external site gives us this error. I'm not really sure where to check what's blocking these connections all of a sudden, and why it seems to work most times, then doesn't for a day or so, then works again. Any tips? • Options to optimize lotus notes 8.5.X

  Has anyone found actually useful optimization methods for the bulky, fat, eclipse giant, nuissance that is Lotus Notes 8.5? I want it to be fast, and not eat up system resources like crazy while I run it ALL day (as it is my company's corporate mail / cal / scheduling solution). I've tried various hacks for the JVM heap size (if I recall correctly). None really bring a performance improvement. I have a dual core cpu, if that helps (I tried going the route of optimizing JAVA for 2 cores in hopes it would work, but seen no speed improvement). Notes is just sooo bloated, anyone have any suggestions to optimize/mod this thing so it is more responsive and less of a resource hog. Note: I don't want to switch to the web version, or the standard stripped down versions, I am aware of those, I just cannot since we don't run those internally for the company.

  I have a mysql dumpfile every night and i every one of them. Each is 14 GB in size, so my backupdrive will be full soon. The difference from one day to another are only some 100MB. How make the daily backups without wasting a lot of space. PS: i used tar to compress 1 file and the size went down to 5GB. I hoped that when i compress two files the ratio would be better, but no. 2 dumps compressed are 10Gb

  I use Google Chrome. I love the snappy and fast feeling. I thought I will miss the add ons of Firefox. But, not really. However, I used to use delicious actively and want to continue to do the same. I miss syncing my bookmarks with delicious. What is the simplest way to sync Chrome bookmarks with delicious? Addition: I see and understand that there are no good "add-ons" per se. I don't mind even a simple cron that I can schedule every day. May be I just have to write one, after all.

• How to set WAN side buffers for WRT54GL running Tomato Firmware

  I've recently set up a machine running m0n0wall to try and fight buffer bloat and do some traffic shaping. It was more convenient (geographically speaking) to connect the cable modem directly to my old WRT54GL, then pass everything to the m0n0wall machine and have that do the real routing work. It took a bit of work, but it's working pretty well. I have a cable connection. I have m0n0wall set up to utilize only 90% of the specified speed of my subscription, which is fine. But I've noticed that at certain times of the day (possibly when my true bandwidth drops below that 90%), there's more latency if the connection is used heavily, and traffic shaping doesn't seem to work as well. I suspect this is caused by the buffers on the WRT54GL still being unnecessarily large. If the connection is working as expected, they won't get filled, but in times of reduced bandwidth they would. Does anyone know the command I need to execute, on the WRT54GL running Tomato Firmware, to reduce the buffers on the WAN interface to the minimum size possible?

  I need a software for automatic time tracking on Windows. With the following features: It should record time spent using the computer each day. Start time and end time. It should record what programs the employee used and total time for that program for specified period of time. It must have a centralized server that collects and stores all data. It could be a cloud server outside of a company network. It must have a web interface for viewing the monthly reports (the last but the most important requirement!). A nice feature to have would be an automatic generation of timesheets and Mac OS X support. I am looking to use it for a small team, this is not for personal use. • SQL Server 2008 Express - "Best" backup solution?

  What backup solutions would you recommend when using SQL Server 2008 Express? I'm pretty new to SQL Server, but as I'm coming from an MySQL background I thought of setting up replication on another computer and just take Xcopy backups of that server. But unfortunately replication is not available in the Express Edition. The site is heavily accessed, so there has to be no delays and downtime. I'm also thinking of doing a backup twice a day or something. What would you recommend? I have multiple computers I can use, but I don't know if that helps me since I'm using the Express version.

  The Windows (Vista) documentation and available online info is comprehensively vague. If I have a moderately brain dead system and want to restore it, and I have a "Backup and Restore Center" backup whose "delta" is not quite a week old (but with a "full backup" behind it), what steps do I go through to recover my box back to that backup point? It's totally unclear whether simply doing "restore all" from the (advanced) "Center" is sufficient, or do I need to first take the box back to day zero with the system restore DVD, et al?   Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

  I am developing an application on a Linux embedded board (runs Debian) e.g. Raspberry Pi, Beagle Board/Bone, or olimex. The boards works on an environment that the electricity is cut unexpectedly (it is far complicated to place PSU, etc.) and it would happen every day couple times. I wonder if the unexpected power cuts would cause crash/problem on the Linux Operation System? If it is something that I should worry, what would you suggest to prevent the damages on OS against the unexpected power cuts? PS. The application needs to writes some data to the storage medium (SD card), I think it would not be suitable to mount it as read-only.

• IIS 8 Random 503 service unavailable

  We migrated a busy website to Windows Server 2012 with IIS 8. The website randomly gives the error "503 service unavailable" after an user presses F5 the error is gone again. The website is build in ASP.NET MVC 3. The website runs on one application pool, with default settings There are around 500 to 900 concurrent users on the website during the day, and the error happens more often when there are more 650 users. The CPU and the memory use on the server is stable. There is nothing about the 503 errors in the application log, the IIS log and the event log. Does anyone has any clue what the problem can be or how we can trace the the problem?

  In a conversation with the network administator, I mentioned that my machine was a dual-core. He told me it was not. I brought up the task manager, went to the perfomance tab, and showed him that there are two separate CPU usage graphs. I have a quad-core machine at home and it has four graphs. He told there were two graphs on this particular machine because of hyper-threading. I used to have a hyper-thread pentium 4 processor back in the day, but I never fully understood what it meant. So what is the difference between hyper threading and dual-core? And how do you tell which one you have?

• Offline installer for Windows 8?

  I have a computer repair service, and can see a few more people wanting Windows 8 updowngraded. Because of New Zealand's internet speeds it takes 1-2 hours to run the download part of the official Windows 8 upgrade tool. This means I have to go back to people the next day. I would like to keep an "offline" version of the Windows 8 upgrade tool on my flash drive, so I can avoid this inconvenience. Obviously it would still require a legit credit card etc, it just comes with the download part not needed. I cannot find such a tool. Does one exist?

• Sudden restart now chrome kills computer

  My computer suddenly restart itself the other day and when it came back up so much as clicking on the icon for Google Chrome freezes everything. I uninstalled Chrome and tried reinstalling is but as soon as the download finished, the computer froze again. I tried installing an earlier version (about a week prior) and it froze differently but still froze. I am also getting notification that the battery needs to be replaced. At the moment I am running it sans battery and using firefox and everything seems to be fine. I have a HP dv4t running Windows 7.

  Recently our web-server crashed and we had to recover everything from a backup which took the whole day(totally unacceptable in our business). So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future? Our main server is on Amazon with Windows 2008/IIS + Postgresql 9.1. I was thinking on creating the same server on a different location as a complete mirror with the database replication. But I'm not sure how to implement IIS instance mirroring over the internet... So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future?

• adding keyboard shortcuts for OSX terminal or xterm

  Is there a way to add a keyboard shortcut for a terminal command in OSX. Basically most of the times i open the terminal app in MAC in order to ssh into a certain server foo. What I want to do is add a keyboard shortcut (say ^k) so that on a terminal when I do that, it runs "ssh foo" in the terminal. Thanks PS: I think if there is something for the xterm in linux then it should work for the terminal too. So this might not be an OSX specific question. PS2: I want the shortcut to do carriage return with the "ssh foo". If its just "ssh foo", then I can write an alias in .bashrc. My goal is to minimize the number of keystrokes I've to do at the end of the day.
