• Large File Upload in SharePoint 2010

And with SP2010 it’s going to be more prominent, because atleast at the server side, SharePoint can support large files much much better than SharePoint 2007 ever did. The issue with very large files being uploaded through any browser based API are - Reliably transferring gigabyte or bigger files without breakages over a protocol like HTTP, which is better suited for tiny transfers like images and text. Not killing your browser because it has to load all that in memory Not killing your web server because All that you upload through HTTP post, first gets streamed into IIS Memory, w3wp.exe memory before the ENTIRE FILE finishes uploading .. before it is stored. Which means, You cannot show an accurate and live progress bar of the upload, IIS gives you no such accurate metric of an upload. All the counters it gives you are approximate. Your w3wp.exe eats up all server memory – 4GB of it, for a 4GB upload. A thread is kept busy for the entire duration of the upload, thereby greatly limiting your web server’s capability to serve newer requests. Kills effective load balancing. Not killing your content database because, As you are uploading a very large file, that large file gets written sequentially into the DB, and therefore for a very large file very severely impacts the database performance. I had put together another video showing RBS usage in SharePoint 2010. I talked about many practical ramifications of using RBS in SharePoint in that video. Note that enabling large file support will never ever be a point and click job, simply because there are too many questions one needs to ask, and too many things one needs to plan for. However, one part that will remain common across all large file upload scenarios, in SharePoint or outside of SharePoint is to do it efficiently while not killing the web server. • Moving away from .Net to Ruby and coping without intellisense

  I am in the process of trying to learn Ruby, however after spending nearly 10 years in the MS stack I am struggling to get by without intellisense. I've given RubyMine a try which does help however ideally I would like to go free which would mean no RubyMine. How have other people leant to cope with remembering everything instead of relying on Ctrl-Space? Any advice is appreciated as at the moment I am feeling very stupid (no jokes about MS devs please ;)) Thanks

• Inside Red Gate - Divisions

  When I joined Red Gate back in 2007, there were around 80 people in the company. Now, around 3 years later, it's grown to more than 200. It's a constant battle against Dunbar's number; the maximum number of people you can keep track of in a social group, to try and maintain that 'small company' feel that attracted myself and so many others to apply in the first place. There are several strategies the company's developed over the years to try and mitigate the effects of Dunbar's number. One of the main ones has been divisionalisation. Divisions The first division, .NET, appeared around the same time that I started in 2007. This combined the development, sales, marketing and management of the .NET tools (then, ANTS Profiler v3) into a separate section of the office. The idea was to increase the cohesion and communication between the different people involved in the entire lifecycle of the tools; from initial product development, through to marketing, then to customer support, who would feed back to the development team. This was such a success that the other development teams were re-worked around this model in 2009. Nowadays there are 4 divisions - SQL Tools, DBA, .NET, and New Business. Along the way there have been various tweaks to the details - the sales teams have been merged into the divisions, marketing and product support have been (mostly) centralised - but the same basic model remains. So, how has this helped? As Red Gate has continued to grow over the years, divisionalisation has turned Red Gate from a monolithic software company into what one person described as a 'federation of small businesses'. Each division is free to structure itself as it sees fit, it's free to decide what to concentrate development work on, organise its own newsletters and webinars, decide its own release schedule. Each division is its own small business. In terms of numbers, the size of each division varies from 20 people (.NET) to 52 (SQL Tools); well below Dunbar's number. From a developer's perspective, this means organisational structure is very flat & wide - there's only 2 layers between myself and the CEOs (not that it matters much; everyone can go and have a chat to Neil or Simon, or anyone else inbetween, whenever they want. Provided you can catch them at their desk!). As Red Gate grows, and expands into new areas, new divisions will be created as needed, old ones merged or disbanded, but the division structure will help to maintain that small-company feel that keeps Red Gate working as it does.

  Were you aware there are two versions of the Access .accdb file format? The 2007 “ACE” version and the 2010 “ACE” version both use different drivers. If you’ve tried to use the Access Database .accdb format on DiscountASP.NET servers and it failed you must have been using a Data file created with the 2010 version of Access.
