• Mac OS X: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.sun.java.browser.plugin2.DOM

  I am trying to use the new LiveConnect features introduced in Java 6 Update 10. Code looks like this (copied from the applet tutorial): Class<?> c = Class.forName("com.sun.java.browser.plugin2.DOM"); Method m = c.getMethod("getDocument", java.applet.Applet.class); Document document = (Document) m.invoke(null, this); But all I am getting is a ClassNotFoundException for the entry-point class. This on the Mac, 10.6, with both Firefox and Safari. Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22 Using JRE version 1.6.0_22-b04-307-10M3261 Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM Is this not implemented on the Mac? Or do I need to configure something? All I need to do is get and set the value of form elements on the page, so I would be fine with an older (pre-6u10) API if that works better.

• How do I mock a custom field that is deleted so that south migrations run?

  I have removed an app that contained a couple of custom fields from my project. Now when I try to run my migrations I get ImportError, naturally. These fields were very basic customizations like below: from django.db.models.fields import IntegerField class SomeField(IntegerField): def get_internal_type(self): return "SomeField" def db_type(self, connectio=None): return 'integer' def clean(self, value): # some custom cleanup pass So, none of them contain any database level customizations. When I removed this code, I've created migrations so the subsequent migration all ran fine. But when I try to run them on a pre-deletion database I realized my mistake. I can re-create a bare-bones app and make these imports work, but Ideally I would like to know if South has a mechanism to resolve these issues? Or is there any best practises? It would be cool if I could solve these issues just by modifying my migrations and not touching the codebase. (Django 1.3, South 0.7.3)

  Hello, I'm using ADO.NET entity framework, and am using an AdventureWorks database attached to my local database server. For unit testing, what approaches have people taken to work with a database? Obviously, the database has to be in a pre-defined state of change so that the tests can have some isolation from each other... so I need to be able to run through the inserts and updates, then rollback either between tests or after the batch of tests are done. • How do I get the position of a result in the list after an order_by?

  I'm trying to find an efficient way to find the rank of an object in the database related to it's score. My naive solution looks like this: rank = 0 for q in Model.objects.all().order_by('score'): if q.name == 'searching_for_this' return rank rank += 1 It should be possible to get the database to do the filtering, using order_by: Model.objects.all().order_by('score').filter(name='searching_for_this') But there doesn't seem to be a way to retrieve the index for the order_by step after the filter. Is there a better way to do this? (Using python/django and/or raw SQL.) My next thought is to pre-compute ranks on insert but that seems messy.

• Opening a Silverlight project causes APPCRASH is Visual Studio 2008

  Hi guys I've got to add a Silverlight project to a solution for a deployment procedure (it's a pre-build dependency for the main project). I've installed Silverlight tools v3, silverlight itself and the silverlight sdk 3, and am using Visual Studio 2008 with ReSharper and the DevArt oracle database tools. Every time I go to open the relevant silverlight .csproj file VS crashes with the following error message: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: devenv.exe Application Version: 9.0.30729.1 Application Timestamp: 488f2b50 Fault Module Name: StackHash_20af Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000 Fault Module Timestamp: 4791a7a6 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: 000b015d This also happens if I try to create a new silverlight project from scratch. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• iphone: is there any secure way to establish 2-way SSL from an application

  Hi I need to establish a HTTPS 2-way SSL connection from my iPhone application to the customer's server. However I don't see any secure way to deliver the client side certificates to the application (it's an e-banking app, so security is really an issue). From what I have found so far the only way that the app would be able to access the certificate is to provide it pre-bundeled with the application itself, or expose an URL from which it could be fetched (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2037172/iphone-app-with-ssl-client-certs). The thing is that neither of this two ways prevent some third party to get the certificate, which if accepted as a risk eliminates the need for 2-way SSL (since anyone can have the client certificate). The whole security protocol should look like this: - HTTPS 2-way SSL to authenticate the application - OTP (token) based user registration (client side key pair generated at this step) - SOAP / WSS XML-Signature (requests signed by the keys generated earlier) Any idea on how to establish the first layer of security (HTTPS) ? regards

  Hi there, I'm a C++ developer wrestling with updating an application that had made extensive use of the IStorage interface to open pre-Office 2007 documents from in-memory storage (via ILockBytes). If you are still following me so far, you probably know that the new Office Document formats are incompatible with IStorage containers. The application I'm trying to update, relied upon the IPersistStorage interface that all Office applications have, and the code as written calls the load method of IPersistStorage to read in a document from IStorage interface. • Rails: Generated tokens missing occasionally

  We generate an unique token for each user and store it on database. Everything is working fine in the local environment. However, after we upload the codes to the production server on Engine Yard, things become weird. We tried to register an account right after the deploy. It is working fine and we can see the token in the db. But after that, when we register new accounts, we cannot see any tokens. We only have NULL in the db. Not sure what caused this problem because we can't re-produce this in the local machine. Thanks for your help.

  I'm stumped! We have a user control for managing account information. We use this particular control on two pages. On one page, everything works perfectly and meets our expectation. • Emailing HTML from within an iPhone app is stopping at special characters

  Hi, I have an iPhone app that will let users email some pre-determined text as HTML. I'm having a problem in that if the text contains special characters within the text (e.g., ampersand &, , <), the NSString variable that I use for sending the body of the email gets truncated at the special character. I'm not sure how to fix this (I tried using the method stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding…but this hasn't fixed the problems). Thoughts on what I'm doing wrong / how to fix it? • Class inheritance in PHP 5.2: Overriding static variable in extension class?

  Hi, I need to bea be able to use a static variable set in a class that extends a base class... from the base class. Consider this: class Animal { public static $color = 'black'; public static function get_color() { return self::$color; } } class Dog { public static $color = 'brown'; } echo Animal::get_color(); // prints 'black' echo Dog::get_color(); // also prints 'black' This works wonderfully in PHP 5.3.x (Dog::get_color() prints 'brown') since it has late static binding.   Hello, I have application which retrieves many large log files from a system LAN. Currently I put all log files on Postgresql, the table has a column type TEXT and I don't plan any search on this text column because I use another external process which nightly retrieves all files and scans for sensitive pattern. So the column value could be also a BLOB or a CLOB, but now my question is the following, the database has already its compression system, but could I improve this compression manually like with common compressor utilities? And above all WHAT IF I manually pre-compress the large file and then I put as binary into the data table, is it unuseful as database system provides its internal compression?

• Why is the destructor called when the CPython garbage collector is disabled?

  I'm trying to understand the internals of the CPython garbage collector, specifically when the destructor is called. So far, the behavior is intuitive, but the following case trips me up: Disable the GC. Create an object, then remove a reference to it. The object is destroyed and the __del__ method is called. I thought this would only happen if the garbage collector was enabled. Can someone explain why this happens?   We will be deploying a production application to Amazon EC2 very shortly. Initially, we'll just be using a "small" instance, but have plans to scale up not long afterwards. My question is, has any investigation been done on JVM tuning for the EC2 environment? Are there any specific changes that we should make to our JVM parameters to compensate for quirks/characteristics of Amazon EC2? Or, do the normal tuning methodologies apply here as they would in a physical environment? Our application will be deployed on Tomcat 6.x. It is built using JBoss Seam 2.2.x, and uses PostgreSQL 8.x as the backend database. Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated!

My local Dev server runs on a RHEL5 VirtualMachine similar to my production server. My Netbeans project is editing the VM files via ssh (I have mounted the server as a local drive) But: It's slow Files can disapear ( netbeans delete them ? ) I can't use git on it because it's slow. The idea would be to be able to have a shared filesytem between the guest os and the host os.

• What is a reasonly priced map API solution for a startup?

  I've been developing my application with Google Maps and the wonderful rails plugin for it, expecting to find that when I put my app into production that the commercial licensing wouldn't be too expensive. Then I found out it cost $10,000/year, no exceptions so far. http://www.47hats.com/2009/07/google-maps-the-10k-gotcha/ That's not a terrible price to pay for unlimited usage when your site becomes successful, but for those of us trying to build something from the ground up, that's a hefty price to pay. I've looked at Bing and Yahoo but they're very wishy-washy with what ballpark the pricing is. That on top of the fact I have to ditch my nice rails plugin YM4R for Google maps... Is anyone out there using a map API solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get started with in a commercial aspect? I don't mind not using a plugin, I just need something that will work and is cost affordable in the beginning.

Our architects require us, developers, to compile our program on those 2 platforms each time before copying them on their respective machine in production. I have become a great fan of pre-allocating objects (kudos to SO and R inferno by Patrick Burns) and would like to improve my coding habits. If developers are just checking in code, then how can you get version 1.1 (say the current production build), out of subversion? 2\ In VS you have the concept of solutions, many solutions might use the same project. How do I make sure when a developer checks out a solution, they get the appropriate versions of the projects that belong to that solution?

• Rails - authoritative source for your database schema?

  I have Rails app, and every once in a while, when I bring new developer onboard they exclaim that they should be able to produce the current DB schema in their dev environment by running the whole history of the migrations. I personally don't think that migrations is the authoritative source for your schema. Right now what we do is load a production copy of the DB, with the current schema, onto the dev machine. And, from there, the schema can be maintained via incremental migrations. So my question are: What is the authoritative source of your schema on a Rails project? What is now considered the best-practice way to maintain your DB schema?

If the application does not match the DB schema version, there should be a way to warn the user and list the changes needed. Is there a tool or a framework (to use programatically) with built-in features to do that? Or is there some simple algorithm to run this comparison? Update: Red gate lists "from $395". Anything free?   I have a HTML list with this style: font-weight: bold; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; list-style-type: none; display: block; width:700px; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap; and the cells have this style: display: inline; and I have spacer cells between each cell with this style: padding-right: 20px; display: inline; My problem is that when the list is too long for its 700 pixels, it wraps. I want this, but I dont want the objects to be on two separate lines. I have tried the CSS white-space property, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

• Combining javascripts into a single file

  Having read up recently on yahoo's web optimisation tips and using YSlow I've implemented a few of their ideas on one of my sites http://www.gwynfryncottages.com you can see the file here http://www.gwynfryncottages.com/js/gw-custom.js. While this technique seems to work perfectly on most occasions, and really does speed up the site, I do notice a significantly higher number of errors where the javascripts don't load or don't load completely while I'm working on the site so three questions:- is combining scripts this way a good idea at all in terms of reliablity? is there any way to measure the number of errors? is there any way to 'pre-load' the javascript or ensure that the number of loading errors is reduced?
