• MySQL get point in time totals from related tables

  Hi everyone We have an order book and invoicing system and I've been tasked with trying to output monthly rolling totals from these tables. But I don't know really where to start with this. I think there's some SQL syntax that I don't even know about yet. I'm familiar with INNER/LEFT/JOINS and GROUP BY etc but grouping by date is confusing since I don't know how to limit the data to only the current date that's being grouped by at that point. I think this will involve joining the tables to themselves or possibly a sub-select. I always thought it best to avoid sub-selects apart from when absolutely necessary. Basically the system has 3 tables orders: order_id, currency, order_stamp orders_lines: order_line_id, invoice_id, order_id, price invoices: invoice_id, invoice_stamp order_stamp and invoice_stamp are UTC unix timestamps stored as integers, not MySQL timestamps. I'm trying to get a listing by year/month showing the total of current unbilled orders (sum of price), at that point in time. Current orders are ones where order_stamp is less than or equal to 00:00 on the 1st of the month. Unbilled orders are ones where invoice_stamp is null or invoice_stamp is greater than 00:00 on the 1st of the month. At that point in time there may not be a related invoice yet and invoice_id might be null. Anyone got any suggestions on what I should join to what and what I need to group by? Cheers, B

  I have a large number of sets of integers, which I have, in turn, put into a vector of pointers. I need to be able to update these sets of integers in parallel without causing a race condition. More specifically. I am using OpenMP's "parallel for" construct. For dealing with shared resources, OpenMP offers a handy "atomic directive," which allows one to avoid a race condition on a specific piece of memory without using locks. It would be convenient if I could use the "atomic directive" to prevent simultaneous updating to my integer sets, however, I'm not sure whether this is possible. Basically, I want to know whether the following code could lead to a race condition vector< set<int>* > membershipDirectory(numSets, new set<int>); #pragma omp for schedule(guided,expandChunksize) for(int i=0; i<100; i++) { set<int>* sp = membershipDirectory[5]; #pragma omp atomic sp->insert(45); } (Apologies for any syntax errors in the code---I hope you get the point) I have seen a similar example of this for incrementing an integer, but I'm not sure whether it works when working with a pointer to a container as in my case.

• jQuery or CSS - How do you make a link in a table row appear underlined even when the cursor is in a

  I have a table of 3-4 columns, the central one being task names that are also links(yet another todo app..groan). Im trying to make it so that whenever the mouse hovers over any part of the table row - not just the link itself - the link will appear underlined. Its a small detail but its been annoying me like hell and i refuse to let it get the better of me now. At first i tried jQuery with a (forgive the obvious syntax errors but this is the jist) $('#row_in_question').hover( function(){ $(this).find(...the link..).toggleClass("highlighted") }, function(){ $(this).find(...the link..).toggleClass("highlighted") } ); with this as a styling for the a element in general .highlighted { text-decoration: underlined; } and it did indeed toggle the highlighted class on that link - however css inheritance got in the way and no visual changes made. Since i previously styled that link to have no underline when not hovered it wouldnt change the style. So how do i go about this? I dont want the whole row to become clickable, I just want the text to become underlined.

  I'm trying to set up a Rails Template that would allow for comprehensive set-up of a specific Rails app. Using Pratik Naik's overview (http://m.onkey.org/2008/12/4/rails-templates), I was able to set up a couple of scaffolds and models, with a line that looks something like this ... generate("scaffold", "post", "title:string", "body:string") I'm now trying to add in Delayed Jobs, which normally has a migration file that looks like this: create_table :delayed_jobs, :force => true do |table| table.integer :priority, :default => 0 # Allows some jobs to jump to the front of the queue table.integer :attempts, :default => 0 # Provides for retries, but still fail eventually. table.text :handler # YAML-encoded string of the object that will do work table.text :last_error # reason for last failure (See Note below) table.datetime :run_at # When to run. If there are more than one link, just the first one is saved, and if there are links inside the ul tag, they are not included because they are descendants and no childrens. Something like this (I am cloning and outputting html): $(this).clone().remove('not(a:first)').html(); //Assuming remove looks for "a" as a first child Does not work, so I try with this: $(this).clone().children().remove('not(a:first)').parent().html(); Does not work so I try with this: $(this).clone().remove('not(>a:first)').html(); I need the original element as a reference after removal for chaining more operations EDIT: Ok! Second one works with a little syntax correction as some appointed (:not( instead of not() but I would like to know if there is any other solution similar to the third line so I don't have to do children().remove().parent(). • Regular expression, excluding .. in suffix of email addy

  This is homework, I've been working on it for a while, I've done lots of reading and feel I have gotten pretty familiar with regex for a beginner. I am trying to find a regular expression for validating/invalidating a list of emails. There are two addresses which are giving me problems, I can't get them both to validate the correct way at the same time. I've gone through a dozen different expressions that work for all the other emails on the list but I can't get those two at the same time. First, the addresses. [email protected] - invalid [email protected] - valid The part of my expression which validates the suffix I originally started with @.+\\.[[a-z]0-9]+ And had a second pattern for checking some more invalid addresses and checked the email against both patterns, one checked for validity the other invalidity but my professor said he wanted it all in on expression. @[[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+]+ or @[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+ I've tried it written many, many different ways but I'm pretty sure I was just using different syntax to express these two expressions. I know what I want it to do, I want it to match a character class of "character+"."character+"+ The plus sign being at least one. It works for the invalid class when I only allow the character class to repeat one time(and obviously the ip doesn't get matched), but when I allow the character class to repeat itself it matches the second period even thought it isn't preceded by a character. I don't understand why.

• How to encapsulate a third party complex object structure?

  Motivation Currently I'm using the java parser japa to create an abstract syntax tree (AST) of a java file. With this AST I'm doing some code generation (e.g.: if there's an annotation on a method, create some other source files, ...) Problem When my code generation becomes more complex, I've to dive deeper into the structure of the AST (e.g. I have to use visitors to extract some type information of method parameters). But I'm not sure if I want to stay with japa or if I will change the parser library later. Because my code generator uses freemarker (which isn't good at automatic refactoring) I want the interface that it uses to access the AST information to be stable, even if I decide to change the java parser. Question What's the best way to encapsulate complex datastructures of third party libraries? I could create my own datatypes and copy the parts of the AST that I need into these. I could create lots of specialized access methods that work with the AST and create exactly the infos I need (e.g. the fully qualified return type of a method as one string, or the first template parameter of a class). I could create wrapper classes for the japa datastructures I currently need and embed the japa types inside, so that I can delegate requests to the japa types and transform the resulting japa types to my wrapper classes again. Which solution should I take? Are there other (better) solutions to this problem?

• Fast, Unicode-capable, cross-platform programmer's text editor that shows invisibles like ZWSP?

  Our publishing workflow includes Windows and Linux machines (there are some Macs too, but not in the critical-path workflow). Many texts include both English and Khmer and are marked-up in XML. XML Copy Editor is the best cross-platform open-source XML editor I've discovered. It utilizes the Scintilla editing component, which is generally good with Unicode but which does not enable non-printing or invisible characters like U+200B (zero-width space) and U+200C (zero-width non-joiner) to be displayed. Khmer does not separate words with a space character as Western languages do, so ZWSP is used in electronic texts to enable applications to break lines easily. Ideally I'd edit the markup and the content in a single editor, but XML awareness is less important at times than being able to display invisibles. (OpenOffice.org Writer and Microsoft Word are the only two apps I know that will display ZWSP. They are not suitable for the markup and text manipulations that need to be done to prepare manuscripts for publication, unfortunately, although I guess they're fine for authoring.) I tried out a promising editor last week, but a search-and-replace regex operation that took under a second in TextPad 4.7.3 lasted over twenty seconds. So I want to mention that speed and the ability to handle large (up to 150mb) files is also a concern. Is there a good, fast, free or not too expensive text editor, with versions on Windows and Linux and maybe mac too, Unicode-aware and capable of displaying invisibles like ZWSP? That has syntax highlighting, can handle large files and is customizable enough that I won't tear my hair out in frustration? Thanks, Roger_S

To not complicate things further, here's my business requirement: "bring me back all the Employees where they belong in Department "X". So when I view this, it will display all of the Employees that belong to this Department. Here's my environment: Silverlight 3 with Entity Framework 1.0 and WCF Data Services 1.0. I am able to load and bind all kinds of lists (simple), no problem. I don't feel that my environment matters and that's why I feel it is a LINQ question more than the technologies. My question is for scenarios where I have 3 tables linked, i.e. entities (collections). For example, I have this in my EDM: Employee--EmployeeProject--Project. Here's the table design from the Database: Employee (table1) ------------- EmployeeID (PK) FirstName other Attributes ...   Hi Everyone! I have some javascript which runs a timer that animates something on the website. Is there something wrong with my syntax here? I ran firebug with it, and it doesn't throw any errors, it simply won't work. Any advice would help! I should mention that the src of bullet1 starts at bulletwhite.png and then I was hoping for it to change to bullet.png and have bullet2 change to bulletwhite.png.

  Is there built-in support in the TPL for batching operations? I was recently playing with a routine to carry out character replacement on a character array which required a lookup table i.e. transliteration: for (int i = 0; i < chars.Length; i++) { char replaceChar; if (lookup.TryGetValue(chars[i], out replaceChar)) { chars[i] = replaceChar; } } I could see that this could be trivially parallelized, so jumped in with a first stab which I knew would perform worse as the tasks were too fine-grained: Parallel.For(0, chars.Length, i => { char replaceChar; if (lookup.TryGetValue(chars[i], out replaceChar)) { chars[i] = replaceChar; } }); I then reworked the algorithm to use batching so that the work could be chunked onto different threads in less fine-grained batches. This made use of threads as expected and I got some near linear speed up. I'm sure that there must be built-in support for batching in the TPL. "C with Classes" was a C dialect that became the immediate ancestor to C++... I then wrote the first version of Cfront in "C with Classes". When I read this, it piqued my interest in the C preprocessor. I'd seen its macro capabilities as suitable for simplifying common expressions but hadn't thought about its ability to significantly add to syntax and semantics on the level that I imagine bringing classes to C took. So now I have a couple of questions on my mind: 1) Are there other examples of this approach to bootstrapping a language off of C? 2) Is the source to Stroustrup's original work available anywhere? 3) Where could I learn more about the specifics of utilizing this technique? 4) What are the lengths/limits of that approach? Could one, say, create a set of preprocessor macros that let someone write in something significantly Lisp/Scheme like?

  I've looked all over and haven't yet found an intelligent way to handle this, though I feel sure one is possible: One table of historical data has quarterly information: CREATE TABLE Quarterly ( unique_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, date_posted DATE NOT NULL, datasource TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, data FLOAT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (unique_ID)); Another table of historical data (which is very large) contains daily information: CREATE TABLE Daily ( unique_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, date_posted DATE NOT NULL, datasource TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, data FLOAT NOT NULL, qtr_ID INT UNSIGNED, PRIMARY KEY (unique_ID)); The qtr_ID field is not part of the feed of daily data that populated the database - instead, I need to retroactively populate the qtr_ID field in the Daily table with the Quarterly.unique_ID row ID, using what would have been the most recent quarterly data on that Daily.date_posted for that data source. For example, if the quarterly data is 101 2009-03-31 1 4.5 102 2009-06-30 1 4.4 103 2009-03-31 2 7.6 104 2009-06-30 2 7.7 105 2009-09-30 1 4.7 and the daily data is 1001 2009-07-14 1 3.5 ?? 1002 2009-07-15 1 3.4 && 1003 2009-07-14 2 2.3 ^^ then we would want the ?? qtr_ID field to be assigned '102' as the most recent quarter for that data source on that date, and && would also be '102', and ^^ would be '104'. The challenges include that both tables (particularly the daily table) are actually very large, they can't be normalized to get rid of the repetitive dates or otherwise optimized, and for certain daily entries there is no preceding quarterly entry. I have tried a variety of joins, using datediff (where the challenge is finding the minimum value of datediff greater than zero), and other attempts but nothing is working for me - usually my syntax is breaking somewhere. Any ideas welcome - I'll execute any basic ideas or concepts and report back.

• Doing a POST to a Service Operation in ADO.NET data services

  Is it possible to POST to a service operation defined in an ADO.NET data service (it is decorated with WebInvoke)? I had no problem calling the service operation as an HTTP GET. However, when I switched to doing a POST, the stack trace consistently comes back with "Parameter cannot be NULL". I am using the jQuery syntax below, and sending the POST as JSON (though I'm not including the $.ajax call, the parameter names line up exactly). It would be possible to try this with WCF, as opposed to ADO.NET data services (newly renamed as WCF data services). However, my preference would be to use this approach first. I have tried this with and without the stringify method. Most examples online only show how to use a POST to entities (i.e. for handling CRUD operations). • Spring Form: Submitting extra parameter on submit buttons

  Hi, I am working on a form with a bunch of selection criteria that will generate a report when the form is submitted. I also have a number of different reports that can be generated form this same criteria, and want the type of report to be selectable by using a tab system where each tab clicked on submits the form and generates the correct report. I was to do this by passing an extra parameter into the form to switch onto the right form type I am new to Spring, and from the guidance of an elder was told to use an input button for each tab with the following approximate syntax: <input type="submit" name="${form.selectionValues.tabSelection}" value="1" /> tabSelection form property of the SelectionValues object is not being set. I wasn't surprised ;) DIdn't think this would work. So I am wondering how can I can submit a post back from a button in Spring containing the form values plus an extra tabSelection parameter and value? How should I mark up this mechanism? Will I have to do anything to the form controller to register this extra parameter? The original markup I was using to build this page, was using HTML anchor tags instead of buttons for the tab links, which would be much better for the CSS, is there any way to trigger a full form submit using an anchor href? I know this will be a GET request instead of a POST, and not associated with the form.. so I dont expect this to work.. just trying to think of solutions! I would prefer to use the priginal markup, as the styles are there. Any help would be appreciated

  I understand passing a pointer, and returning a pointer: char * strcat ( char * destination, const char * source ); You're passing a variable that contains the address to a char; returning the same. But what does it mean to pass something using the reference operator? Or to return it? string& insert ( size_t pos1, const string& str ); I mean, I understand what actually happens, I just don't understand the notation. Why isn't the notation this instead: string * insert ( size_t pos1, const string * str ); //made up I presume it has something to do with passing/returning the instance of a class, but what? Is this syntax valid; if not why not and if so what does it mean? char & strcat ( char & destination, const char & source ); //made up (all of the function declarations, except the last made-up two, are from http://www.cplusplus.com )

No interfaces are available on the classes. Now, I have a method that I want to beable to pass in a CustomLabel and set the Bold property. Can this be done without having to 1) find out what the real class of the object is and 2) cast to that object and then 3) make seperate code for each variable of each label type to set bold. Kind of like this: public void SetBold(customLabel: CustomLabel) { AngleLabel angleLabel; NormalLabel normalLabel; if (angleLabel is AngleLabel ) { angleLabel= customLabel as AngleLabel angleLabel.Bold = true; } if (label is Label) { normalLabel = customLabel as Label normalLabel .Bold = true; } } It would be nice to maybe make one cast and and then set bold on one variable. What I was musing about was to make a fourth class that just exposes the bold variable and cast my custom label to that class. Would that work? If so, which languages would it work for? (This example is drawn from an old version of Delphi (Delphi 5)). I don't know if it would work for that language, (I still need to try it out) but I am curious if it would work for C++, C# or Java. If not, any ideas on what would work? (Remember no interfaces are provided and I can not modify the classes.) Any one have a guess?

  I want to use PHP to calculate simple algebraic expressions like, 8*(5+1), entered via an <input> tag by a normal user (which means, normal notation: no syntax changes like Multiply(8, Add(5, 1))). Also, it has to show all steps, but that's not hard. The problem, right now, is calculating the value of the expressions. Note: this is what I thought so far, which is quite inefficient but it's a provisory solution. Just replace strings where possible: in our example, recognize the string 5+1 and replace it with 6. Then, loop again, replace (6) with 6, loop again, and replace 8*6 with 48. The code for multiplying, for example, should look like this: for ($a=1; $a < 1000; $a++) { for ($b=1; $b < 1000; $b++) { string_replace($a . '*' . $b, $a*$b, $string); } }

  Hi I have created a List data structure implementation for generic data type with each node declared as following. struct Node { void *data; .... .... } So each node in my list will have pointer to the actual data(generic could be anything) item that should be stored in the list. I have following signature for adding a node to the list AddNode(struct List *list, void* eledata); the problem is when i want to remove a node i want to free even the data block pointed by *data pointer inside the node structure that is going to be freed. at first freeing of datablock seems to be straight forward free(data) // forget about the syntax..... But if data is pointing to a block created by malloc then the above call is fine....and we can free that block using free function int *x = (int*) malloc(sizeof(int)); *x = 10; AddNode(list,(void*)x); // x can be freed as it was created using malloc what if a node is created as following int x = 10; AddNode(list,(void*)&x); // x cannot be freed as it was not created using malloc Here we cannot call free on variable x!!!! How do i know or implement the functionality for both dynamically allocated variables and static ones....that are passed to my list.... Thanks in advance...

  Hi: I am trying to read from a file using fgets and sscanf. In my file, I have characters on each line of the while which I wish to put into a vector. When I run my program, I get a seg fault. It happens when I do the sscanf. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
