• Ubuntu 11.04 is not opening

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 with Windows 7. Ubuntu was working nice but now when I choose Ubuntu 11.04 from boot loader, it is not opening. Just Purple screen is coming but then nothing change. I can't see login menu, it doesn't pass to the login menu. What should I do? Has anyone this problem? Thanks for your answer. I did the steps you wrote Frantique. But now I have a black screen and then nothing. When I choosed ubuntu 11.04 from bootloader, first purple screen is opening then after 1 second it is going to a black screen. And I have nothing again. I can't write anything. Just I have a black screen. It is not openining. Before those problems they work together nice. There aren't any errors. Lets I tell you what did I change: I installed docky, and theme of MACOSX. They were working nicely. And I tried to install a nice calendar. To do this installation I changed a litle bit the file sources.list. That calendar program was working succcesfully too, after installation. The theme MACOSX was working succesfully there weren't any problem. After some days maybe meeks I had that problem which I asked in the above. Now when I tried to update I have a lots of errors. Like: Failed to urls... can't access archive something... .... Failed to urls... can't access archive something... .... ..... Failed to urls... can't access archive something... I hope you will solve the problem. I want my MacOSXUbuntu back :)

• Can't boot from Ubuntu 12.04 live USB

  I'm trying to recover GRUB after installing Windows 7. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 first, then installed Windows 7 so I lost the GRUB at startup. Made a USB stick with Ubuntu to boot from, I get the menu tell it to start and it takes off but then gets stuck. The last line showing on the screen is: ata10: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0xc800 ctl 0xc480 irq 17 or this: [4.793048] scsi9 : pata_jmicron Then it just gets stuck there and the screen flashes from time to time.

• ubuntu 13.04 upgrade to 64 bit

  I have ubuntu 13.04 dual booting wit MS windows. It is a 32 bit version but the pc is a 64 bit. When I use the 64 bit install DVD it sees the two main partitions and gives several options but I can't find how to replace the ubuntu 32 with the 64 version without chopping the hard drive into little pieces or formatting the whole drive . I don't want to to do this and don't recognise any of the partitions shown when I go to the "do something else" menu.

  I have read about Virtualbox using which we can run both windows and ubuntu parallely, but it seems that for this we have to make one host and install the other one using Virtualbox in it. (Please correct me if wrong) I am already using both ubuntu and windows on my pc (dual boot) and I want to run the already existing ones parallely instead of installing one of them again (don't want to install the softwares again).   After I installed Ubuntu by using Windows installer for Ubuntu Desktop, I found that I can only run executable programs in the "Desktop" folder. In any other folders, when I typed in something like ./a.out, there appears a Permission Denied error. Also, in the "Properties" dialog box of the file I want to execute, the box of "allow executing file as a program" cannot be chosen if the file is not in the Desktop folder. What should I type in the terminal to fix the problem?

When I try to mount the drive, ubuntu shows: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read $MFTMirr: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Input/output error NTFS is inconsistent. One more problem is also there: When I try to install Windows 7 with live dvd as well as USB, the installation freezes at the screen 'Setup is Starting...'. • Why does Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot fail?

  Fresh install of XP followed by a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 results in the following error: error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue and the machine will not boot. Prior to the 12.04 install, XP worked fine. During the 12.04 install, all partitions and free space was visible, and the install seemed to complete without issues until the error message. Although I can fix the MBR via recovery console in XP and allow the machine to boot to windows, why is GRUB/Ubuntu trashing the boot sequence?

• UBS drive on Ubuntu on VM Virtualbox

  OSX is my host OS I have windows xp and Ubuntu 10.10 on guest OS. They both work great. When I eject USB flash drive from host OS, it appears in windows guest OS but it does not appear in Ubuntu Guest OS. I never run both guest OS at the same time. its always either or. I am running, VM virtualbox 4.1.10 and installed latest guest additions and also installed VM virtualbox extension pack. Thanks for your help

Some time it just drop me in grub menu of previously installed ubuntu 13.04. Sometime it show a message "Could not open //fallback.efi: 14 ..." for a moment and then just stays there(blank screen).   Basically I have a Ubuntu Server machine and I would like an idiot-proof solution for sending emails from my website that is also running in this same machine. My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail.   I've setup two Amazon EC2 instances, both running Ubuntu Server. One is configured as a DNS server running bind9, which will be used to allow EC2 instances to communicate with each other based on hostname rather than IP, since their private IPs may change. I think I have the DNS server setup correctly. I want to use the second EC2 instance to test the DNS server. Using Webmin, I've added the DNS server's private IP to the client's DNS Servers list and added the domain to the Search Domains list. I did have to edit /etc/dhcp3/dhclint.conf to make my changes stick. After reboot, I expected I'd be able to ping or nslookup the DNS server from the test client, but it can't seem to find the server. Is there something I'm missing? What's required to configure an Ubuntu client to use a DNS server? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something before I assume the server's the problem.

  Hi there, I just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my home machine. The machine is running a Core2Duo E6750 on an MSI motherboard with an Nvidia GTX260-OC Graphics card. The problem I am having as stated in the title is for some reason Ubuntu is playing audio through my headphone coming out from the computer and it is also playing the audio at the exact same time through the HDMI connection coming out of the graphics card, it has a plug to allow this. What is going on, I have never seen this before. Most importantly of all can it be fixed so that I can sepertate the 2 interfaces, the one is a standard PC audio IO and the HDMI one is connected through the mobo's internal SPDIF. More information can be provided if required.

  My ideal scenario is that there is a script/command to boot into the alternate OS from the current OS you are in, restarting the same OS without running the script/command will return it to the same OS. Currently I have grub setup to remember the last OS booted, using GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, I'd like to keep this option. I have read about the ability to manipulate grub from within Ubuntu to boot into windows, shown in this link. Is there a way to similarly boot into Ubuntu from within Windows? I am primarily connecting to this device remotely and hence my query.

  This has bothered me for quite a while but I never found out why or how to change the behavior. ip duplicates could be caused by typos or dhcp errors etc., but they do occur from time to time. in rpm-based systems such as centos, the old server with the duplicate ip wins, and the new server will get an error in bringing up the nic (ip address already used). this is somewhat harmless because we can just fix the system that is coming up. ubuntu only the other hand happily grabs the used ip for itself and leave the old server/device without a valid ip. this is the more dangerous behavior because it causes outages. what i want is to change the ubuntu behavior to that of the centos/rhel so would appreciate any help.

• Not able to access a folder in Windows 7 and not able to see in Ubuntu.

  I have four partitions on my hard disk. Partition C has Windows XP installed and Partition G has Windows 7 installed. Ubuntu 10.10 is also installed, probably in F. Partitions C and G are NTFS. When I boot into C, XP is loading but when I click on the C Drive in MyComputer, it displays: "Access is denied". Windows 7 displays the folder tree of C, but when I try to open a folder, I am not able to view the contents. The same error: of Access Denied. When I try to view the C Partition using Ubuntu, the entire C partition is not visible. I tried following commands to take ownership of the C drive: takeown /f C: cacls C: /G Rohit:F but still I am not able to get rid of "Access Denied". I again tried the above commands from the Windows 7 safe mode, but still the problem persists. The two commands return "Successful", but nothing is happening.

• In Ubuntu, how do I change my default Greek font?

  I'm taking a course in ancient Greek, and I store notes and flash cards on my computer. However, by default Ubuntu uses a modern Greek font. This changes some noticable things--for example, a circumflex is ? instead of a?. I can type the circumflex by switching back to english and entering the unicode combining character u0311 (which is what I just did to type the second a), but obviously this is very cumbersome. I've installed the "ttf-linex" package from the Ubuntu repositories, which claims to include an ancient Greek font. But I have no idea how to enable this font for whenever I switch to the Greek keyboard layout.
