• Workshops, online content show how Oracle infuses simplicity, mobility, extensibility into user experience

  By Kathy Miedema & Misha Vaughan, Oracle Applications User Experience Oracle has made a huge investment into the user experience of its many different software product families, and recent releases showcase big changes and features that aim to promote end user engagement and efficiency by streamlining navigation and simplifying the user interface. But making Oracle’s enterprise software great-looking and usable doesn’t stop when Oracle products go out the door. The Applications User Experience (UX) team recognizes that our customers may need to customize software to fit their work processes. And that’s why we provide tools such as user experience design patterns to help you maintain the Oracle user experience as you tailor your application to fit your business needs. Often, however, customers may need some context around user experience. How has the Oracle user experience been designed and constructed? Why is a good user experience important for users? How does understanding what goes into the user experience benefit the people who purchase the software for users? There’s a short answer to these questions, and you can read about it on Usable Apps. But truly understanding Oracle’s investment and seeing how it applies across product families occasionally requires a deeper dive into the Oracle user experience, especially if you’re an influencer or decision-maker about Oracle products. To help frame these decisions, the Communications & Outreach team has developed several targeted workshops that explore what Oracle means when it talks about user experience, and provides a roadmap into where the Oracle user experience is going. These workshops require non-disclosure agreements, and have been delivered to Oracle sales folks, Oracle partners, Oracle ACE Directors and ACEs, and a few customers. Some of these audience members have been developers or have a technical background; just as many did not. • Did "sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz". Now ccsm settings ignored

  I executed: sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz Now changing settings in CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) has no effect. For example, changing the number of desktops has no effect. I tried purging and reinstalling ccsm but it didn't help. Incidentally, where is the documentation for this sort of thing (which documentation specifies where Unity and Compiz store config settings?)? And where does dconf store things? And where is dconf's documentation? http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/dconf/dconf.1.html says nothing about the 'reset' command, and it says it stores things in /var/log/dconf, but nothing was there. Are there two things named 'dconf'? I would actually like to just put things back to where they were before I executed sudo dconf reset. I have a backup of my hard drive available, I just need to know which files to rollback. I tried rolling back the .config, .gconf, and .cache directories, to no avail. I'm using 12.04.

• Best hardware for a Ubuntu Computer?

  Hey all. I'll be needing a new PC soon, but I've decided to build my own, so my question is...what's the best hardware for Ubuntu? Specifically, in terms of graphics cards; I'm looking for something that will run smoothly (for Compiz's effects and Unity) but will be quite modern (IE: have a HDMI output) The machine itself is just a generic computer, nothing special; I just want to future-proof it. I'm looking at quad-core chips and 3-4 gig of RAM. I want something that will play nice with Ubuntu; now, and in the future... I used to build machines years ago, but I've fallen behind (that was in the Windows 98 era...so yeah, quite a while ago!) My main problem is the graphics card; I'd prefer to stick with NVIDIA, but only a tiny amount of computers I've seen play nice with Nouveau.

  I installed Kubuntu image long time ago, and did several release upgrades since that. I have package kubuntu-full installed, and boot into KDE. Currently it looks like I'm using ubuntu: ~: lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 13.10 Release: 13.10 Codename: saucy There's not a single kubuntu word in my /etc/apt/sources.list, or is it Kubuntu = Ubuntu - Unity + KDE now? For example there's a Pre-Alpha Ubuntu Thar already, but no Kubuntu one. Would I get Kubuntu Thar, by installing Ubuntu Thar in the way mentioned above? Probably Kubuntu team now are the guys responsible for KDE working in Ubuntu.

• Problem with Numlock light and remapping keyboard

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10. And there are two problem: Numlock is on. But after I press Ctrl+Space (hotkey for IBus, (default in 13.10 is Super+Space)), Numlock is off and I must press Numlock button twice to enable Numlock. About remapping keyboard, because my keyboard have some broken key, so I am using xmodmap to remap my keyboard (config file for xmodmap is $HOME/.xmodmap). But when I switch keyboard layout (I mentioned above), everything changed to default, and I must run xmodmap .xmodmap to remap keyboard again. When using Ubuntu 13.04, everything is good. How to solve my problems? UPDATE: 1. I am using two keyboard layout: English (US) and Unikey (from ibus-unikey package). 2. If I change key board layout using menu on Unity panel, no first problem.

• High CPU load - Ubuntu 14.04

  I noticed that sometimes when browsing (with other processes in the background), I get very high CPU load for the browser process (over 100%) and the computer becomes really slow. I tried switching from Firefox (with just a few extensions) to Chromium, but same thing happens without me visiting graphics-intense sites, flash sites or anything like that. I also noticed python or node (when running "make") produce the same high CPU load from time to time so this is not necessarily browser-related. When I only have a browser open, it doesn't seem to happen and everything is fine in Windows 7. I switched from unity to gnome3 with no effect. Specs: lenovo w510 (4gb RAM, i7 q820 @ 1.73) + up to date Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. Printscreen: http://imgur.com/8MZJNKC Do you guys have any idea why this might happen? • Bug in firefox address bar autocomplete running on KDE

  Has anyone experienced this graphical glitch when typing in Firefox address bar? The drop-down list is not drawn correctly, with some "blocks" missing. After typing more letters or hovering the mouse cursor, the list redraws itself and becomes complete. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, Firefox 13.0.1 and this only happens in KDE (tested with 4.8.2, 4.8.3 and 4.8.4). It does not happen in Unity or Xfce with the same user profile. If I go to the KDE control panel and disable the Fade effect, the bug starts to happen to almost every menu in the system, including, the taskbar window previews. Enabling the “Fade” effect corrects the bug everywhere except in Firefox. I have an Nvidia card and I am using the proprietary driver (current, not current-updates -- not sure about the difference), but the linked question on an Arch Linux forum says this happen with the open source driver and with other cards too. Does anyone have an idea for a solution?

• xkb for simple remap

  I've faced some issues after remapping keyboard with xmodmap: settings get reset randomly after 2-20 minutes after applying. Googled it but no help: something resets them, but all mentions apply to xfce, while I'm under usual 14.04 Ubuntu with unity. I saw phrases like 'use xkb, forget xmodmap', but still have no idea how to do that. It's either classified or very complicated, because amount of info on that is significantly smaller than for xmodmap way. Here's my list of customisations: xmodmap -e "keycode 84 = Down" xmodmap -e "keycode 79 = Home" xmodmap -e "keycode 80 = Up" xmodmap -e "keycode 83 = Left" xmodmap -e "keycode 85 = Right" xmodmap -e "keycode 87 = End" xmodmap -e "keycode 90 = Insert" xmodmap -e "keycode 91 = Delete" xmodmap -e "keycode 89 = Next" xmodmap -e "keycode 81 = Prior" where keycodes are corresponding keys on numpad, with numlock = off (basically, I'm replacing KP_Del with Delete, KP_Home with Home etc - don't ask why)) Can someone help to find a way to do that using xkb - at least one of the lines? And where to find the "names" of keys for other so I could do the rest by example?

• Monitoring Html Element CSS Changes in JavaScript

  [ updated Feb 15, 2011: Added event unbinding to avoid unintended recursion ] Here's a scenario I've run into on a few occasions: I need to be able to monitor certain CSS properties on an HTML element and know when that CSS element changes. For example, I have a some HTML element behavior plugins like a drop shadow that attaches to any HTML element, but I then need to be able to automatically keep the shadow in sync with the window if the  element dragged around the window or moved via code. Unfortunately there's no move event for HTML elements so you can't tell when it's location changes. So I've been looking around for some way to keep track of the element and a specific CSS property, but no luck. I suspect there's nothing native to do this so the only way I could think of is to use a timer and poll rather frequently for the property. The following code creates a box and uses the draggable (jquery.ui) plugin and a couple of custom plugins that center and create a shadow. Here's how I can set this up with the watcher: $("#box") .draggable() .centerInClient() .shadow() .watch("top", function() { $(this).shadow(); },70,"_shadow"); ... $("#box") .unwatch("_shadow") .shadow("remove"); This code basically sets up the window to be draggable and initially centered and then a shadow is added. The .watch() call then assigns a CSS property to monitor (top in this case) and a function to call in response. The component now sets up a setInterval call and keeps on pinging this property every time. When the top value changes the supplied function is called. While this works and I can now drag my window around with the shadow following suit it's not perfect by a long shot. The shadow move is delayed and so drags behind the window, but using a higher timer value is not appropriate either as the UI starts getting jumpy if the timer's set with too small of an increment. This sort of monitor can be useful for other things as well where operations are maybe not quite as time critical as a UI operation taking place.   I read this article where is a workaround to add maximum eight keyboard layouts. But my questions are: I would like to try this, but I see they've written there something with "gnome" in the script. In my Ubuntu, 13.04, I have Unity. What do I do? I would have to do this for four x four keyboard layouts (to have 13 keyboard layouts). This script, however, is designed for two x four keyboard layouts. How do I get the four x four? I would really appreciate your tips and hints on this. And I would kindly ask you to keep it simple, if possible, because I'm really no expert in both Ubuntu and computers in general.

• How to customize the gnome classic panel

  First the picture: As you can see in the image, the color used for the icons and words Applications and Places (In spanish in this case) they have a different background dark gray color than the rest of the panel. Also the icons look rather bigger in that panel. Now my questions are: Can the background colors be customized so they look the same all the way in the panel. Can the icons be somehow minimized a little so they do not look strange (bigger actually) How to edit the way to add icons to the panel. I have to actually have to press the ALT key then right click on it to add something. That extra key is not friendly at all. In this particular case am trying to help an older man start in Ubuntu. Unity is too much for him but Gnome is friendlier for him (Learning curve is not the best for older people.. specially 68+ year old people).

• Shader inputs in a general purpose engine

  I'm not familiar with SDKs like Unity or UDK that much, so i can't check this offhand. Do general purpose engines allow users to create custom uniform variables? The way i see it, and the way i have implemented it in an engine i'm writing to learn 3D, is that there is a "set" of uniforms provided by the engine and if you want to write a custom shader then you utilize uniforms you need to create a wanted effect. Now, the thing is, first of all i'm not an artist, second of all, i didn't have a chance to create complex scenes yet. So my question is, is it common practice to define variables that the engine provides and only allow the user to work with what they're given? Allowing users to add custom programs and use them where they want is not hard, but i have issues imagining how you'd go about doing the same for uniforms.

• Can't bind gnome-do to Super + Space or Ctrl+Alt+Space

  With today's updates to 12.04 I can no longer bind gnome-do to either ctrl+alt+space or super+space. With 11.10 it wasn't possible to use super+space, on a fresh install of 12.04 super+space was working properly. Today it stopped working, if I try to bind control+alt+space then the controlkey shows up in the keyboard binding as Primary. I am running Unity, which in the past blocked super+space, it seemed to have stopped blocking it on 12.04. It shouldn't affect ctrl+alt+space. Configuring either binding produces the following error in the gnome-do output: libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! I'm stuck binding to shift+alt+space.

• how to set owner and permission to a cryptsetup made device?

  I have an encrypted loopback volume. I need to mount and umount manually the volume so I use cryptsetup luksOpen and cryptsetup luksClose . However, When I invoke this command it pops up the /dev/mapper device under all the sessions under gnome/xfce/kde/unity ... And then it let the user to mount (with password), expulse and unmount the volume. It's quite annoying in a multi user server (you are working on your files and the volume is being unmounted). How can I define ownership and permission on the device ? I've tried chown and chmod approach witch gives nothing. Cryptsetup doesn't have any options that let you do that. crypttab auto mount the filesystem on boot witch is unwanted (only manual mount)

  I am trying to find the option that sets, for the whole system the default Web Browser, Mail Client, Video Player and Music Player instead of having to do it for each type of file. I knew where the option was in 11.04 but somehow I can not find it again. Just to not get anymore confused I am not talking about right clicking a file then changing the "Open With" to the one I want. The option I am looking for affects everything in general, so if I change, for example, the default video player to VLC, all movies will be watched with VLC. I am using Unity.

• What's your advise on a potential legal suit? [closed]

  I [xxx app developer] received an email from Apple that a developer [of yyy app] believes I am "infringing their copyright." Description of Issue: [xxx developer] copied my application (my application is [yyy]) feature by feature. Even their donation model is completely copied from my application. Their first release was significantly later than mine, which implies copying of the application rather than parallel development. I suffered significant financial losses because of their actions, in additional to promotion problems as many people are confused with their product. My advertising was based around the idea of a "free [yyy] application for an iPhone" and they have just taken that as a title for their application. I would appreciate if someone takes a look at their release schedule and compare it to my releases. Additionally, please take a look at their functionality and how it point by point copies the functionality of my older releases. I am asking Apple to remove their application from the App Store, and ban them from resubmitting it. Thank you for your time! [yyy developer], the developer of the [yyy] application. My response was: The code of [xxx] is written by myself, using Apple public API. The graphics elements are designed by myself. The user interface and app control are independently designed and different from other [similar type] apps (please judge yourself). In-app Purchase is iOS Apple standard API. iAd is Apple iOS standard API. I don't think features can be owned exclusively. In fact, my app comes with fewer features, as I prefer minimalist design. I don't think idea can be owned exclusively. Apple responded: Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, Apple cannot serve as arbiter for disputes among third parties. Please contact [yyy developer] directly regarding your actions. You can reach [yyy developer] through: [...]. We look forward to confirmation from both parties that this issue has been resolved. If this issue is not resolved shortly, Apple may be forced to pull your application(s) from the App Store. Then I sent my response above to [yyy developer]. [yyy developer] then asked me "to provide (my) legal address and contact details that (his) lawyer requires to file a copyright infringement suit." IMO, I don't think the [yyy developer]'s claim on "feature by feature" copy is valid. I have fewer features, completely different user interface design. However, I don't think I can afford a legal action for an app of so little financial return. So what's your advise on this? Should I just let Apple pull my app? • kile does not get keyboard input, respond to Alt+F

  I use 11.10 with Unity. I use two kde apps a lot - kile and kate. Since the latest upgrade, I have observed two problems: a] I can never use Alt+F to select the file menu (works with other apps), yet when I press Alt, kile's menu comes up in the status bar. b] A few times every day, while using kile (haven't used kate as much recently), the keyboard stops responding (just in the 'editor' portion, rather than in structure-tree navigation). I cannot enter any text, but mouse works fine. I usually restart kile to continue working. One inconsistent way to reproduce it (multiple times today): I cut text from one open document using Ctrl-X switched to another document in the same kile window using Ctrl-Tab, then this happened. c] Sometimes, in kate, I can type in the editor but the keyboard won't work in the 'File open dialog'. How do I fix the above?

• Cool Enhancements Everyone Can Enjoy

  With Release 17, we have a few visual and functional enhancements that make using CRM On Demand that much better for us all. I'll mention a few here, but to get the full outline of these upgrades, I recommend taking 10 minutes to view the Release 17 Usability Transfer of Information course. First and foremost, I find the ability to customize your theme (or skin) pretty cool, but I've said that before. Take a look at the Selecting Your Theme and the Themes - Create Your CRM Style blog articles for more information. My next favorite is the resizeable user interface (UI). CRM On Demand will dynamically fit the device and screen resolution you're using, which includes the resizing of fields, field editors and pop-ups. If you have a wide screen like me, you should appreciate that one very much. To make it easier to see that resized UI, the detail pages got a little face lift. New horizontal lines and other subtle changes make those pages easier to read. Also, those things you need to know, like error messages and inline help are highlighted with a little icon to show the message type. You may not think every change to the detail pages are particularly exciting, but I'm sure you'll enjoy the new Head Up Display, which saves you scrolling time by adding links to related information sections. I like that the head up display travels with me as I move up and down the page...it's like a little friend that takes me where I want to go as fast as possible. You may also really like the fact that the copy record feature is now available for all record types from both detail pages and lists. Your company administrator can choose which fields get copied, so you can maximize your efficiency when creating new records. Lists also got a face lift. Alternating colors in rows make it easier to see your data. Also, the Favorite Lists icon is now on the list itself, so you can save your most useful lists with one click. If you've ever tried to create a new list with 10 columns or more, you'll be happy to hear that the maximum number of columns in a list has increased from 9 to 20. This is great news, but doesn't mean you should include the kitchen sink in your list...excess columns can slow list performance. So choose your columns wisely. Again, these are just a few of my favorite things. Let us know what you think about the new usability features. What are your favorite things?

• How to report a crash bug with nothing on screen

  I would like to report an installation bug, but I can't launch ubuntu-bug : On my tablet (LDLC Janus, an Intel based tablet without OS installed by default), I have a problem when I install Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10. Once the installation is finished, when I reboot, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing on screen, but Ubuntu boot correctly anyway : I choosed auto-login mode and I can hear the login sound. Even if I Ctrl+Alt+F1 or F2... there is nothing. But the livecd works fine (even touch screen even if without multi touch). I tried to install 10.10 it works, but as soon as I upgrade the same problem occure. i installed Fedora 15 and then Fedora 16 (because of other problems) and no problems with them. I would like to report this bug on launchpad but I don't know how to do to give devs logs files and other useful files which could help debug. Thanks a lot for your answer, I would really prefer using my tablet with Ubuntu (I miss U1, USC, Unity)
