• Drivers and firmware for the LiteOn ihap-122-9 DVD drive

  I'm trying to replace the DVD drive in my old PC. LiteOn.com is a mess and I can't find a single working driver or firmware update there, or anywhere. Windows XP tries to use a default, generic driver dated 2001. (About 9 years before this drive even existed.) http://www.firmwarehq.com/download_1..._6L0H.EXE.html This correctly finds my LiteOn ihap-122-9 DVD Drive. It correctly finds that I'm currently using firmware 6L0F. It correctly tries to install 6L0H. It completes 100% but then just fails and says "contact your vendor". Does anyone know why? Where can I actually get drivers... and firmware updates... that actually work for the ihap-122-9? Apparently, the newest driver IS the 1 made 9 years before the drive existed. (Unbelievable.) And the latest firmware is the 1 that is already in the drive. (Common.) No other drive I've had in this computer ever had a problem. This brand new LiteOn is doing this: Opening MY COMPUTER now takes 60 seconds. MY COMPUTER marking the drive as "DVD F:" takes another 30 seconds. MY COMPUTER showing "Batman II" title takes another 15 seconds. Clicking and running the movie will take another 30 seconds for the main-menu to appear. The movie starts about 20 seconds later. The movie runs fine for 1-2 seconds... then stops for 5 seconds.... then starts again and plays for 1-2 seconds. Repeats for 2 hours. (It happens with all store-bought DVDs and all home-made DVDs.)

• Utility to grant admin rights to a user in Windows XP for few hours/days?

  Hi, I have two accounts on my windows xp home desktop. The default regular user is used for everything and the 2nd user which has admin rights is used only for installations. I do this to avoid malware infestations during web browsing and limited user account is guarding against online threats to a good extend but many programs refuse to run under limited rights like revo uninstaller. many installs i run from limited user by selectin "run as" from right click context menu of the .exe file. but some apps need admin rights for certain. I use "switch user" to go to admin mode and do the install/uninstall. but the admin user has none of my preferences bookmarks setup nor has my locate32 indexing done and ready for fast search Is there a utility which I can use "run as" login in administration login and use that to grant my limited user admin rights for a limited amount of period like few hours or days? Please help. I guess MS might have closed many doors of it for fear of exploitation of the API. are there any?

  First of all after much pain i figured out how to make it work in Apache 2.4 windowz. Here is my configuration that seems to work successfully for git clone and push and everything. Problem First of all my configuration works. There is a "Require all denied" at / directory. I want only git functionality and nothing else. • Tooltips shadow stuck on desktop

  I tends to get this problem from time to time. The tooltips with a shadow appearing on top of everything. It's the shadow of the tooltips not disappearing after the tooltips disappear. The last one I had the tooltips was from the wifi connection list at the systray. This problem also happen to me on another computer. Both running Win7 with ATI gpu. I found this similar post Menu command stuck on screen but none of the solution helped. In fact the "Fade or slide tooltips into view" has been unchecked from the beginning. Ending task of "dwm.exe" also doesn't help. So far the only way to resolve this by restarting window. I can't post picture yet, so can't show any screenshot. Edit: Just tested a few more trick which doesn't work. Turn of aero Hibernate Switch main display to external display and switch back.   I'm trying to install MediaWiki on a Win2008r2 server, but can't manage to install PHP. Here's what I did: Grabbed a Zip archive of PHP and unzipped it into C:\PHP. Created two subdirs: c:\PHP\sessiondata and c:\PHP\uploadtemp. Granted modify rights to the IUSR account for the subdirs. • Defrag starting when not scheduled. What is triggering the defrag

  I have a fileserver that is starting a defrag around 2:00 PM everyday. This is killing performance as it runs for ours becuase this is a file server and has multiple drives. All scheduled tasks regarding defrag have been disabled. I have verified that it is accessing the data drives(using SysInternals tools). The reason I might have though otherwise was the event log has multiple entries regarding defragging a db file related to shadow copies. Oh yes these drives take shadow copy snapshots multiple times per day but the times of them don't coincide with the defrag task. There is nothing in the event logs regarding defrag except those noted above in relation to shadow copies. I'm out of ideas looking for what is starting these jobs. One possiblility is that the drives are not being defgramented, but being analyized to determine if they need to be defragmented. I manually ran an analysis and the cpu usage(by dfrgntfs.exe) seems to be similar to what I'm seeing everday while the defrag process is running. However I've found no setting that schedules this analysis.

• WAMP server won't run with PHP 5.3.4 but will with PHP 5.2.11

  I have a 64bit Windows 7 Professional machine. I'm running WampServer Version 2.1 with Apache 2.2.4. It was installed on a clean machine. I'm using the default ini/conf files as they come. Wamp is installed in C:\wamp\, with php5.2 at C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.2.11 and php5.3 at C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.4. Both folders have the same permissions. When I run WAMP with 5.2.11 picked, it starts fine. When I run it with 5.3.4 picked, there are no errors in the Apache or PHP error logs, but I get The Apache service named reported the following error: httpd.exe: Syntax error on line 115 of C:/wamp/bin/apache/apache2.2.4/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load C:/wamp/bin/php/php5.3.4/php5apache2_2.dll into server: The Apache service named is not a valid Win32 application. in my system application error logs. 5.2.11 calls C:/wamp/bin/php/php5.2.11/php5apache2_2.dll and that doesn't throw an error. What am I doing wrong?

• Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 & Windows 7 64-bit failing miserably

  I am trying to install a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 webcam to Windows 7 64-bit. If I do it without using the Logitech drivers but instead the Windows Update ones, the camera works with low frame rate and without face tracking and all other bells and whistles that it's full driver provides. The moment I install the latest official Logitech driver, the problems begin: Camera works fine, until I decide to go to audio settings of the LWS panel or Windows'. Then LWS freezes and with it everything that tries to output audio. I am not able to open Playback/Recording devices window (it just doesn't appear) and system gets unstable and slow with LWS.EXE process not been able to close forcefully. If I reboot and forget the camera connected, this situation continues and system gets unstable from the beginning. If I reboot without the camera connected, everything works fine until I connect it and try to do something with audio settings of Windows or LWS panel. I should note, that until the freezing occurs, camera works as expected, with full frame rate, face tracking and everything that is expected to do. The soundcard is the ASUS SupremeFX II of the ASUS Striker II Extreme motherboard. Any ideas of what is causing this or what else to try so I can make it work as advertised? Thank you.

• Printing on Windows 8 with PDF viewer (Adobe Reader) from network

  i have a problem with the Adobe Reader 8, but the problem seems to be equally bad with other pdf viewers. Here is the configuration: My PDF viewer is located on network drive "Z:" which is the network adress \dgs-main\progs. I tried to start the adobe reader from here - \\dgs-main\progs\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe and open the PDF from here - C:\Users\ServiceDesk\AppData\Local\Temp\GeneratedPDF.pdf The problem is as follows, if i open the PDF with a local PDF viewer everything works fine and i can print the document. If i open the PDF with the Network PDF viewer then it opens, but printing is impossible. The error message states: "Unable to start print job. Is printer available?" As mentioned above, it works with a local pdf viewer. In both cases i use the same printer. The Printer is a network printer but even with a local printer it fails. The error occurs only on Windows 8 machines. On windows 7 it works fine. I Hope somebody can tell me what the problem is. Thanks in advance and have a fine day.

• Batch file to create many files with special characters

  Essential info: I have a file "DB_OUTPUT.TXT" with 304 lines that I need to turn into 304 files (one per line). Each line contains many special characters and may be up to tens of thousands of characters long. For these reasons, I'm having difficulty using a cmd.exe batch file (which limits the amount of input) and the echo command (which would try to execute each special character, short of me having to escape them all). I also have a file "DB_OUTPUT_FILENAMES.TXT" containing a distinct filename for each line-soon-to-be-file from "db_output.txt". So line 1 of DB_OUTPUT.TXT needs to be the body of a new file with a name equal to line 1 of DB_OUTPUT_FILENAMES.TXT. Extra info: As you may have guessed, DB_OUTPUT.TXT is output from a database; it contains 304 records with 6 or 7 columns at a fixed width with the last column being a SQL query. Each of these lines (db records) will be used as a script to create new database objects, which is why the special characters need to be preserved. Question: Is there a way to do this in a batch-like fashion? I'd be happy with either a Windows solution or a Linux one.

• Word 2007 won't run, tries to reinstall, fails with error 1402.

  Okay, this problem has been plaguing this computer for a while now. We tried googling, and none of the answers found helped to solve the problem. So, I am now posting the answer here for posterity. Office 2007 Home/Student edition was installed on the computer, running Vista (32-bit). One day, Word just up and stopped working. All the other programs continued to operate as expected. But every time you would click the icon for Word, it would pop up an install dialog, with a message reading "Preparing to install...". After a few minutes of the little progress bar going and going, it errors out, and gives error 1402, something to the effect of unable to access registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.wll\.... Searching around, every answer i found had to do with reassigning the permissions on this key, giving full rights to SYSTEM or to Everyone, and propagating the changes down to all sub-keys. When ever this was attempted though, it would tell us that we were unable to access the key due to permissions, even though we had run regedit as Administrator and are logged on with an administrative account. We also tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling it, as well as doing a repair install. Both these attempts also threw the same 1402 error. Also of note was that the executable for Word (winword.exe) was MIA and no longer to be found in the Office install directory.

• Window 7 Host does not answer to ping

  Today I tried printing on a shared printer on one of our homegroup members. Sadly it did not work (printer marked as offline). Shortly after, I noticed I can't even ping the machine that owns the printer (I also can not remotely access it in any other way I've tried). Currently I'm trying to ping the machine from the router both computers are connected to (and my machine in question doesn't answer). I do receive the echo requests (as verified with WireShark). I also added a rule in the Windows Firewall to specifically allow ICMP echo requests, but that didn't change anything. I also tried netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable, but that didn't change anything either. Completely disabling the Windows Firewall has no effect on the issue either. One has to wonder, where does Windows log when and why it ignored any incoming packets? How can I get to the bottom of this? Here are some ways I found to dig deeper into the issue: Enabling logging on the Windows Firewall Enabling Windows Filtering Platform Auditing Both methods at least give more insight into the issue. The plain log file is full of entries like this: 2011-11-11 14:35:27 DROP ICMP 192.168.133.1 192.168.133.128 - - 84 - - - - 8 0 - RECEIVE So the ICMP packets are being dropped as if that was intended. The Event Viewer now gives a little bit more details: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a packet. Application Information: Process ID: 4 Application Name: System Network Information: Direction: Inbound Source Address: 192.168.133.1 Source Port: 0 Destination Address: 192.168.133.128 Destination Port: 8 Protocol: 1 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 214517 Layer Name: Receive/Accept Layer Run-Time ID: 44 This same entry is always repeated with 2 points of information changing: Process ID: 420 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume2\windows\system32\svchost.exe The service host with the PID 420 is the host for the following services: Windows Audio DHCP Client Windows Event Log HomeGroup Provider TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Security Center Additionally, there is currently this problem with the same machine: Even though my network is set to be a "Home network", I am unable to create a new homegroup.

• Best way to integrate applications to windows 7 install.wim image

  I have right now an unmodified .iso of a windows 7 32bit and 64bit installation disk. And I need to integrate to that some applications (office, adobe reader etc) and windows updates so that when windows are installed the above applications/updates are already installed and working. Requirements: My output has to be a install.wim image containing the new/improved windows installation files because the deployment is done via a pxe server and a custom windowsPE enviroment. The procedure to create the install.wim has to be as automatic as possible. I can't create it manually every time I want to incorporate a new windows or application update to the image. The image will be installed on 100+ computers so it needs to be 'generic'. I've never done something like this before but from what I searched a possible solution to this issue would be: To create a reference installation (preferably on a vm so I can take snapshots) complete with its applications/updates/settings. After the complete setup I take a snapshot of the installation Run C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize /shutdown to sysprep the machine. Boot to a WindowsPE enviroment and capture the .wim image using gimagex. Deploy the .wim and enjoy the rapid installation times. :D Does that sound ok? Would you recommend anything else? Right now the applications are installed after the installation of windows is complete. So the total installation time is quite long. That's why I need a different approach.

• Ubuntu won't boot from USB memory stick

  I used the instructions on this webpage to create a bootable USB drive for running Ubuntu 9.10. Unfortunately it doesn't work on my EeePC. Even with 'Removable Dev.' selected in the BIOS as the first boot device, the PC just boots into Windows 7. How do I troubleshoot this problem? • Python not Working in Vim

  I have a new install of VIM from the automatic windows installer: gvim73_46.exe I have Python 2.7 (32 bit) installed. If I open gvim, and type: :set python? I get E518: Unknown option. If I try typing: :python 'hello' Vim crashes. What could be wrong? Here are the contents of :version in case they are helpful, although python is installed, and it is using Python 2.7. I also checked, and C:\Windows\System32\python27.dll is where it should be... I am really lost here. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going wrong? • Timeout settings for Remote Desktop Sessions to lock

  Our office uses a Windows 2003 server to provide access to an accounting application. Recently I was asked to increase the amount of time it takes for the session to lock itself and require the entry of the user's password to resume. That seems to be about ten minutes, at present. I am familiar with group policy and have tweaked those settings to scavenge sessions (and thereby licenses) from sessions that have been disconnected (by the user closing the mstsc.exe client or by a network issue). That's simple and straightforward. But I can't find anything in GP to allow a longer time period before the RDP client window goes black and then, when clicked upon, requires a username and password to resume the session. I must admit this would be nice personally as well, since most of my time is spent documenting the application and/or monitoring its database, so I usually have a window open to the terminal server along with the rest of the staff in the accounting center, but I interact with it very little. I usually enter my password 10-15 times per workday, but I'm pretty good at it by now. ;) So, can this timeout period be adjusted, or are we out of luck?

• Connect Chrome to TOR

  I'm having difficulty connecting Chrome to TOR. I started trying yesterday. I started Vidalia and the TOR Browser and then followed the advice at http://lifehacker.com/5614732/create-a-tor-button-in-chrome-for-on+demand-anonymous-browsing - downloading Proxy Switchy and setting it up as stated. This resulted in Error 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED) (in Chrome, when I tried to load a webpage). So I looked into Vidalia's settings and noticed that it appeared to be using port 9051, so I set that instead of 8118 as everyone on the internet seems to be suggesting. Then I got a new error: Error 111 (net::ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED). Digging a bit, I found that Tor should be set as a SOCKS proxy, not an HTTP proxy, so I unticked "use same settings for all protocols" in Proxy Switchy and just set localhost:9051 for SOCKS. I typed up the above question, but then at the last minute decided to do a bit more reading and found someone here suggested using some command line arguments via a Windows shortcut: "C:\snip\chrome.exe" --proxy-server=";socks=127.0.0.1:9051;sock4=127.0.0.1:9051;sock5=127.0.0.1:9051" --incognito check.torproject.org And that worked perfectly. Yesterday. Today it doesn't, so I'm having to post this question after all. check.torproject.org gives me a "no" with Chrome, but a "yes" with the default Tor Browser. I tried closing Chrome and restarting it (yes, with the correct shortcut) after Vidalia started, but still nothing. The port number hasn't changed or anything. What gives? EDIT: I realized I had a "non tor" instance of Chrome running and that possibly the was causing the command line args t be ignored when I started the new instance. Closed all instances of chrome and ran my Chrome Tor shortcut, and it did get rid of the "not using Tor" message -- because I got another Time Out error instead. Vidalia's bandwidth graph didn't even blink.

• Is it possible to add/register an MIB for the Windows built-in SNMP service?

  I need to build monitoring into an existing .NET application. I will use SNMP to send the application's status to the Windows SNMP service. I have used a .NET library to create the SNMP SET request according to the MIB that I have been provided with, and with the correct community. My code now sends multiple 'variables' in a SET request, for example: Id: ".1.3.6.1.4.1.43607.1.1.1.1.1" (ObjectIdentifier) Data: 42 (Integer32) On my machine I have enabled the SNMP service, configured a community with READ/WRITE permissions, and added localhost to the list of hosts to accept requests from. When I send the SET request I get a response, but it has error status 17 which, according to MSDN means SNMP_ERRORSTATUS_NOTWRITABLE. The response also has error index set to 8, which is the number of variables I send. If I send 7 variables, the error index is set to 7. I think the problem is that the Windows SNMP service is preconfigured to only accept SET requests for a fixed set of MIBs. How can I get the Windows SNMP service to 'accept' my custom MIB SET request? Edit: I downloaded and installed the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit and tried to 'compile' the MIB file with mibcc.exe ("SNMP MIB Compiler") but I have not been able to compile any MIB files (even the most basic ones like SNMPv2-SMI.mib).

• Windows cannot open directory with too long name created by Linux

  Hello! My laptop has two OSes: Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. A partition of Windows 7 of format NTFS is mounted in Ubuntu. In Ubuntu, I created a directory under somehow deep path and with a long name for itself, specifically, the name for that directory is "a set of size-measurable subsets ie sigma algebra". Now in Windows, I cannot open the directory, which I guess is because of the name is too long, nor can I rename it. I was wondering if there is some way to access that directory under Windows? Better without changing the directory if possible, but will have to if necessary. Thanks and regards! • UACCEEventLog 301 Filling Event Logs

  After pushing out clients for the MS Application Compatibility Toolkit on our domain via GPO, UACCEEventLog 301 occurs a few times per second in the event log. Several Thousand per hour. One test i need to do is logon with Administrator to see if these events go away while Admin, but of course that is not a fix. This is only part of the event log entry, but is the most readable and clearly indicates yet another problem with Antivirus software. But still no fix. Originally, i posted this In Words and Bytes, but then edited it to make it much easier to read. LocalMachine\Users do have Read Access to this key. • mshtml.dll latest version for Internet Explorer 8, Windows XP Service Pack 3

  Many applications in my system (Internet Explorer 8, Yahoo Messenger, Skype 10) are crashing and error details shows module name mshtml.dll. I checked the version of mshtml.dll in system32 folder. It is 8.0.6001.19170. My Internet Explorer version is 8.0.6001.18702. I am not concerned about crash of IE, because I generally use Firefox, but how do I solve the crashes in other applications, which are due to mshtml.dll? I have moved to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32 bit). I have tried to update Internet Explorer 8 (from Tools-Windows Update), but again it crashes. I can not migrate to IE 9, as it requires Vista or Windows 7. I have applied Cumulative Security update for IE8, which has this file name: IE8-WindowsXP-KB2618444-x86-ENU.exe I could not get much info from Microsoft sites or Google. I do not want to use Automatic Updates feature of Windows. Can somebody give the download links for mshtml.dll and any associated files, which I can replace in system32 folder? Thanks.

• Can't upgrade NVIDIA GeForce 310M display driver on Acer Aspire 5745PG

  I've been for days already trying to update my video driver. I have an Acer Aspire 5745PG with a "NVIDIA GeForce 310M" board, and I was trying to run Sony Vegas video editor with Boris Continunn plugins. It happened that some of the plugins, like BCC Text Extrude wouldn't work, showing the message "Insufficient depth resolution to run Blue". I then read somewhere that updating the display driver would do the trick. That was when my nightmares started, I lost already good 3 nights trying to sort this out, without success :( The display driver that was before (and that I current have after restoring) was the version 8.16.11.8997. First thing I tried was downloading the 8.17.12.6619 driver directly from Acer, which was shown as the latest version from Acer website: http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2466 Running it would say "Diver Package Failure - Setup failed to read the required Display Driver to be used with this package" I then tried directly the NVIDIA own driver, which the latest was version 296.10: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/296.10/296.10-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe That gave me similar error message :/ So after some researching I found out that some people had the same issue and they had to change the configuration file to allow the installer to recognize this NVIDIA board: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=222904 That topic said to look for the "Device Instance Id" property of the "NVIDIA GeForce 310M" display , which I couldn't find, instead I found the "Hardware Id", which seemed to be the right one. I followed the instructions and changed the inf file first for the Acer installation, and after for the NVIDIA own driver. It actually managed to go ahead with the installation in both instances, but the only thing I got was a black screen, while the computer still apeared to be running fine. I had to hard reset, and then it would come back with generic vga driver. I could only get my display back using the recovery function. I imagine thousands of this notebook was sold, and it can't have its driver updated?? Could someone help me with this?? Thanks Echo

• Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu

  I'm coming to Windows 7 from XP, and there are aspects of the start menu search that I like. However, there are some behaviors that seem either inconsistent or surprising to me. For example: If I type "Pa" into the search bar, Paint is the first result (under the "Programs" heading), and it is selected for me. I can just hit Enter to start the program If I have a standalone exe "testing" on my desktop, and I type "test", the program comes up as the first item (under the "Files" heading), but it is not selected for me. I have to hit down-down-down-enter to open it from the keyboard. The same appears to be true for shortcuts and folders. What classifies something as a "Program" verses a "File"? Is there any way to configure the start menu so that the first search result is always selected? As a heavy keyboard user, it seems insane for the behavior to be inconsistent, and to require so many keypresses to select the top result. Also, are there resources that document the details, limitations, and tricks of the start menu search? (For example, a "Proc Exp" search will match "Process Explorer", but not "ProcessExplorer") EDIT: I've found that instead of hitting down-down-down to select the first item (when no Programs are in the list), you can just hit tab. This helps a bit, but the inconsistent behavior still makes this search feature more awkward and frustrating than necessary.
