• java: how can i set the compatibility mode of a native .exe?

  So i have a native executable (both for OS X and Windows) tucked inside a .jar, which is then programatically extracted to a temp location and executed from there. Unfortunately this executable will not run properly on my Windows machine (Win 7 64bit), when i manually set the compatibility mode to a Windows XP preset however, it will work. Is there a way i can do this programatically from Java?

  IE7/Windows XP I have a third party component in my page that does a lot of DOM manipulation to adjust itself each time the browser window is resized. Unfortunately I have little control of what it does internally and I have optimized everything else (such as callbacks and event handlers) as much as I can. I can't take the component off the flow by setting display:none because it fails measuring itself if I do so. In general, does setting visibility of the container to invisible during the resize help improve DOM rendering performance?

  Can I use mono's AOT (Ahead of Time compilation) feature to natively "pre-compile" all or part of some of my own .NET DLLs (and or EXEs) to make them harder to reverse engineer? I'm using Windows (7 / x64 but I have an x86 XP machine as well) and .NET 3.5 (VS 2008) and I'm curious if mono/AOT can be/has been used for this purpose? (Tying them to x86 is acceptable at this point.) See also this question where I tried this and had no luck.

  I am using the urllib2 module in Python 2.6.4, running in Windows XP, to access a URL. I am making a post request, that does not involve cookies or https or anything too complicated. The domain is redirected in my C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. However, I would like the request from urllib2 to go to the "real" domain and ignore the entry in the hosts file. Is there any easy and practical way to do this?

This library should support the CBC cipher mode and use PKCS7 padding according to the answer to an earlier question of mine. The library should at least work on Mac OS X (10.4) and Windows XP. Ideally just by dropping it into the source directory of my project. I have seen this by Josh Davis, but am not sure about how good it is and if it does the required CBC cipher mode... I'm considering installing Linux and running the virtual machine from the Linux, but I'm not sure whether I can expect any performance gains? • Can I use two different look and feels in the same Swing application?

  I'm using the Flamingo ribbon and the Substance Office 2007 look and feel. Of course now every control has this look and feel, even those on dialog boxes.
