• Sound card doesn't work and yet does.

  I have a really weird one tonight. Today we had a LAN party and all of a sudden the sound on a couple PC's stopped working for programs like the games, windows media player, etc. However, when errors would popup (like trying to change the volume settings) you would here the default error chime. Restarting the computers you would here the logoff-login sounds and after a restart the sound would work for a bit in both games and apps and then suddenly stop. Restarting also didn't always fix the problem. I can't figure this out. If the sound card/driver didn't work then how could we hear sounds from the windows sound scheme? No sound with VLC, windows media player, youtube, games, nothing. The only thing I can figure out is that this is a bad game crashing the primary driver or some kind of weird virus these PC's might have picked up.

• Determine process using a port, without sudo

  I'd like to find out which process (in particular, the process id) is using a given port. The one catch is, I don't want to use sudo, nor am I logged in as root. The processes I want this to work for are run by the same user that I want to find the process id - so I would have thought this was simple. Both lsof and netstat won't tell me the process id unless I run them using sudo - they will tell me that the port is being used though. As some extra context - I have various apps all connecting via SSH to a server I manage, and creating reverse port forwards. Once those are set up, my server does some processing using the forwarded port, and then the connection can be killed. If I can map specific ports (each app has their own) to processes, this is a simple script. Any suggestions? This is on an Ubuntu box, by the way - but I'm guessing any solution will be standard across most Linux distros.

• Windows 8 gives "system thread exception not handled" after update

  I have a 64-bit dell laptop which I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Since then, it's creating a havoc in my life. The metro apps are not working; the system crashes once in a while and none of my games are running because I don't have the correct drivers for my graphics card (ATI 5000 series). Some days back, Windows downloaded an update and prompted me to restart. After that day, whenever I log in and fire up my desktop, I get all kinds of blue screen errors. The most common one looks something like this: - SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Please help me with how I can fix this, optionally how to go back to windows 7. Thanks.

• Application outside document root in Apache/CentOS

  I have a PHP application running in Apache on CentOS 6. The document root is pointed to a specific app folder: /var/www/my-project/app I'm trying to get phpMyAdmin running on the same server but I don't want to put it in the application folder. Instead I'd like to put it here /var/www/apps/phpmyadmin I'm using a sub domain for the server. What's the easiest way for me to get access to phpMyAdmin? Another subdomain? sub subdomain? Re-direct a folder?

• File corruption

  Recently, almost every file I try to copy into my HDDs gets corrupted. When writing to the disk, some portion of the file is replaced by random bytes (Checked using Diff apps) There's no problem reading existing files. I'm pretty sure it's not the HDD, becasue I've tried another HDD (a brand new 1TB WD) and the problem still remains. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU, an ASUS M2NE motherboard, 2 WD SATA II HDDs (320GB + 1TB) and 3GB of Corsair RAM. My OS is Windows 7 (64 bit) Now, what could be the cause of this? If it's the motherboard, can it be fixed by using a PCI SATA card?

• Reverse Proxy (mod_rewrite) and Rails (absolute paths)

  I have front end rails app, that reverse proxies to any of a number of backend rails apps depending on URL, for example http://www.my_host.com/app_one reverse proxies to http://www.remote_host_running_app_one.com such that a URL like http://www.my_host.com/app_one/users will display the contents of http://www.remote_host_running_app_one.com/users I have a large, and ever expanding number of backends, so they can not be explicitly listed anywhere other than a database. This is no problem for mod_rewrite using a prg:/ rewrite map reverse proxy. The question is, the urls returned by rails helpers have the form /controller/action making them absolute to the root. This is a problem for the page served by mod_rewrite because links on the proxied page appear as absolute to the domain. i.e.: http://www.my_host.com/app_one/controller/action has links that end up looking like /controller/action/ when they need to look like /app_one/controller/action mod_proxy_html seems like the right idea, but it doesn't seem to be as dynamic as I would need, since the rules need to be hard coded into the config files. Is there a way to fix this server-side, so that the links will be routed correctly?

• Powershell Foreach-Object with if statement not working - help!

  I have a batch file that takes a computer name as its argument and will install Java JRE on it remotely. Now, Im trying to run this Powershell script to repeatedly call the batch file and install Java on any system that it finds without the latest version. It seems to run error-free, but the statements inside the if code block never seem to run - even when the if conditional test evaluates to true. Can anyone look at this script and point out what I'm possibly missing? I'm using the Quest AD cmdlets, and BSOnPosh module. • Terminal Server 2003 Gaining Time when Windows 7 Client Connects

  A Windows 2003 Terminal Server keeps time perfectly until a Windows 7 Home client connects. Then it gains time at a rate of several seconds per minute. The client connects through a firewall with only the RDP port open. The client runs the same apps on the terminal server that XP clients run with no issues. Using the Microsoft Terminal Server Client application copied to the W7 computer from an XPsp3 computer gives the same results. Current workaround is to sync time every 5 minutes. Any better ideas?

• Is it possible to push DNS search suffices from DNS server to client?

  Our (active directory, windows-server-based) intranet used to be called "intranet", and DNS worked fine for windows machines and iPads/Android devices. We have changed it to be "apps.intranet", and it still works for windows machines, but no longer for iPads/Android devices. I think this is because out windows clients are configured to append .company.com when searching DNS, to make it a fully qualified lookup (this search suffix list is pushed to the PCs via AD group policies). I must admit, though, I don't know why it worked with just "intranet"! Does anyone know if it's possible to get DNS to "tell" the iPads/Android devices to append .company.com ... or how we can make it work some other way (but still using the multi-label, non-qualified DNS names) ? • How to limit access to Exchange 2003 Mobile Actviesync server by user?

  So I was asked to set up an Exchange Activesync mobile gateway. That's done. It's a separat eExchange 2003 front-end server configured for SSL, and I've put an off-domain ISA server in front of it. Now I'm being asked to limit which users can connect to it. By default an Exchange front-end server allows any user who has a mail account to connect to the front -end server. So I'm looking at the permissions on the various IIS sites/apps on the server, but I know that it's easy to break Exchange Front-end server perms. So I've got the following in IIS: Exadmin Exchange EchWeb Microsoft-SErver-ActiveSync MobileAdmin OMA And a couple of others that I dont think are relevant. Can I change the permissions on one of these to restrict who can connect to Activesync? As a bonus: Can I do it in a way that does not affect ordinary browser based Exchange Access? • Is it possible to use two separate USB tuners with Windows Media Center?

  I'm planning to replace my traditional PC-style media center (with twin tuners) with an Asrock Ion 3D (or similar) but this means forgoing my existing PCI-E dual tuner card for a USB solution. Since Freeview HD (using DVB-T2) is now available I'd like to equip my media center to take advantage. The trouble is there are currently no dual DVB-T2 USB tuners on the market (that I can find anyway). Would I be able to plug two separate USB tuners and have them correctly picked up and working within all apps, including Windows Media Center? Are there any caveats I might need to bear in mind when using two tuners in this way?

One way to bypass relayhost is to setup sender_dependent_relayhost_maps and have certain addresses map back to yourdomain.com. But this doesn't work in web apps where all messages are sent by the same user but with varying From headers. So how can I achieve the same effect as sender_dependent_relayhost_maps but looking at the From or Subject headers instead of merely the user?

• How can I automatically lower Spotify playback volume when my Video Editing program makes a sound?

  I'd like to listen to Spotify while I am video editing. This is just casual listening - nothing to do with the editing work. How can I automatically fade out the volume of Spotify when my video editing program plays audio? I often need to hear the video editing audio without the distraction of Spotify playing over the top, but the video editing playback is too on/off/on/off to switch Spotify audio manually each time. Without background music, I get really sick of the repeated playback of the audio clips with only silence inbetween. I suppose what I needd is an app that monitors sound output from 'App A' and reduces the sound output from all others (Apps B, C, D, etc) when something is played.

• What is the cleanest way to upgrade Fedora and also my individual installs while keeping /home?

  I am a professional programmer, using Fedora 10 (and a host of other packages individually installed). I use my system to telecommute. Every year or so, I go through the ritual dance, usually with a second computer and a KVM switch as I don't have office space for two monitors, to build the next version of Fedora and install all my favorite apps. Is there a better way? At least a nice way to keep track of what I need to 'add on' so that I don't have to manually install my app collection? Also, I keep /home on a separate raid-ed drive set so I can also fall prey to 'old-config-file-itis'.

• Java Development in Linux

  I'm a developer and am brand new to Linux (Ubuntu): I'm wondering what the "best practices dictate" for what FHS directories to install various tools to. Things I'll be installing: Eclipse & plugins GlassFish SVN ...etc. I see that /opt is for holding additional ("optional") software packages, but also see /usr as a place for utils and apps. In another post a user recommended I create an entire partition for /srv alone, and to do my staging there (I assume he meant that /srv is where GlassFish and other servers should go?). So basically: what FHS directories do Linux developers use for which type of tools? Thanks for any input here

• Does Windows notice when a VM is moved around?

  I'm thinking of migrating a Desktop machine (Windows XP) to a VM solution (VirtualBox or MS Virtual PC). The reason is that I need a new hardware anyways and I don't want to (cannot properly) reinstall all the "business" apps on there. So my plan goes as follows: I'll pull an image of the machine and restore it to a Virtual Machine using Acronis Universal Restore or some other tool that can restore to dissimilar hardware. (The process is largely irrelevant for this question I think.) Once I have this virtual machine properly running I'll move it to a new PC. So the question now is. Are there any caveats wrt. to Windows (XP?) being installed in a VM and the VM machine being moved around on different host computers? Can anything break in the OS inside the VM? Will there be troubles wrt. to Windows activation?

Since I host the email for this domain name at Google Apps, I make the DKIM test from a simple php code by using the php mail() function What's causing the failure of the DKIM? • DOS application to allow remote management of files over serial link

  Harken back to the days of DOS. I have an embedded DOS handheld device, and I'm looking for a tool to manage the files stored on it. I picture an application I can launch on the device that opens COM1 up for commands to get a directory listing, send/receive files via x/y/zmodem, move/delete files, and create/move/delete directories. A Windows application can then download a recursive file listing and then manage those files (for example, synchronizing with a local directory). Keep in mind that this is DOS -- 8.3 filenames, 640K of RAM and a 19200bps serial link (yuk!). I'd prefer something with source in case we need to add additional features (for example, the ability to get a checksum of a file for change detection). Now that I've written this description, I realize I'm asking for something like LapLink or pcAnywhere. Norton no longer sells DOS versions of pcAnywhere and LapLink V for DOS seems pricy at $50. Are you aware of any similar apps from those good old days?

  I am working on a Django project with a MySQL backend. I'm curious about the best way to update a production server's database to reflect the changes made on the development server's database? When I develop now, I make some changes to a models.py file, then to a schemamigration using South. Sometimes I do several migrations across several apps within the main project folder before it's ready for the production database. This means that there are several migration files in the app/migrations/ folder created by South. So on the production server, how does one update the database to reflect all the changes made in development, without having any data loss?

Now Windows 7 has this behavior disabled by default and I do not know how to configure it. Discovered the name of sound file used to accompany tray balloon tips in Windows XP Windows XP Balloon.wav More clues: interesting registry key is HKEY_USERS\XP Registry Hive\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\SystemNotification\.Default Default value is %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Balloon.wav So, the System Notification event label appears to be correct, but tray balloons are silenced elsewhere.

• How would I measure the amount of RAM needed per Glassfish domain? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? In our test environment we have a lot of apps spread out over a few servers and Glassfish domains. To make versioning easier I would have liked to have one Glassfish domain per customer per app (kind of like a heavyweight version of lots of jetty instances). But I have heard that Glassfish is kind of heavy on the resources, and so I would need to measure approximately how many instances would fit in the available RAM. These are low-traffic/low load testing servers, so CPU is not really an issue, though RAM might be. How would I get an approximate measure of how much RAM is needed? This is one Glassfish 3 instance with one heavy EAR application deployed. top? jvmstats? ??

  Is there a way to have VIM do incremental search on text files? Vim already does incremental search within the currently open file. Examples of programs that demonstrate the type of search I'm trying to accomplish are Notational Velocity for MacOS, Resop for windows or SimpleNote for the web. These apps do an instant or incremental search in the files of a specific directory and make it easy/fast to narrow down the file you are looking for or create a new file. I use both but would rather live in one editor.(that being VIM) Is there some plug in that would do this?

  I am trying to use Selenium RC but i keep getting this error whenever i start the server. "HTML suite exception seen: java.lang.RuntimeException: sessionId 7643 doesn't exist; perhaps this session w as already stopped?" The command I use is java -jar C:\selenium-remote-control-1.0.3\selenium-server-1.0.3\selenium-server.jar -multiwindow -htmlSuite "*iexplore" "https://user1.apps.com/" "C:\TEMP\Selenium Tests\TestSuite1.html" "C:\TEMP\Selenium Tests\results.html" However with the same command if I change *iexplore to *firefox then it works.   I know there are some great apps out there for keeping track of passwords (see how-do-you-keep-track-of-all-your-passwords if you aren't familiar). I'm interested in additional features for managing my passwords, particularly to reset all my passwords. I can imagine that this feature would be pretty complicated to implement, considering: websites have different methods for resetting a password client applications most likely don't have a means to change a password except for through a graphical user interface (as opposed to providing a command line command) So, I'm curious if there is a solution out there and I just haven't found it. If not, perhaps I will have to start another side project.

• Dos-based printing from NT to unix/linux.

  I need help for the below mentioned scenario: A Dot-matrix printer is physically connected to the Linux machine ( e.g. Ubuntu-10.04 , it can be any unix/linux flavour) From this linux machine, when I take a RDP to the Windows NT-4.0 TS, I run the DOS-based application. Now I want to print few pages from this DOS-based application to the Ubuntu's printer, When I am in RDP-Session. When I followed the samba-printing documentation, I am able to print from GUI-based apps like Notepad, MS WORD and so forth; but not able to print from the command prompt of Windows. Any idea how to do this ? [ WINDOWS MACHINE IS STRICTLY NT-4.0 2000 TS ]
