• Cannot ping Google Public DNS on 8.8.8.8

  I have a weird problem on my Windows 7 (x64) computer. I seem to cannot ping the Google Public DNS on one of its addresses (while the other works fine). The peculiar thing is that it fails with the General failure. error message which usually means that there is a problem with a network adapter/base connectivity and not a timeout as one would expect. I checked my routing tables for any anomalies and I even flushed them but the problem seems unrelated. All the other hosts I tried ping fine (either respond or timeout). If I try to tracert or connect to the address via browser (yes, I know that it doesn't listen on port 80), it also fails instantaneously. The reason I need to ping 8.8.8.8 is that I commonly use it as a test of Internet conectivity due to it being rememberable. The problem occurs no matter where I connect to the Internet (it is a laptop computer). What could be the cause of this anomaly? Note: I use native IPv6 connectivity.

• Hosting websites in our Workplace custom-built datacentre

  I'm faced with unique learning opportunity at work at the moment. Due to the slowdown (amongst other reasons), the powers that be at my office have decided to abandon our shared hosting providers (both shared and dedicated hosting) and have decided to host the websites at our office's datacentre. We're running 7 websites, wherein the average unique hits per day at the moment is about 900. We have 2 servers set aside for this - one is a DELL POWER EDGE 1850 (Intel Xeon 3 GHZ*2, 4GB RAM, 73GB HDD and the other is an HP DL 380 G3 (Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz, 6 GB RAM, 73 GB HDD) a) I would like to know the pros and cons of going ahead with this project.All the sites will be hosted on a single IP. In all probability, the OS is going to be CentOS. b) Do you think I should consider Virtualization into this equation (KVM/Xen)? I was thinking in terms of separate instances of the DB server and the frontend though I do not know if this is the best way to go. c) Should I be trying to use cloud stacks like OpenStack and try to make it look like websites hosted on some sort of Public Cloud? (something that I checked out here). Here is something else I came across, which looks similar to what needs to be done at our office. About the websites - Of the 7 websites, 4 are basic static websites which basically gives a whole lot of information about a few local institutions. The remaining 3 are local product-based websites developed in PHP wherein end user can view products and order them online. I am trying to take this as a learning experience wherein I can learn to build something from scratch and save the company a little something in the process. The migration needs to be completed by Easter so I guess it gives us some time (or am I being overly optimistic??). I am confused here and would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks in advance.

• Can I configure Thunderbird 3 to refresh the folder list for an Exchange IMAP account?

  Background: When used as an IMAP client against Gmail, Thunderbird 3 (may be the case in v2 also, not sure) will refresh it's list of folders (the folders correspond to Gmail labels) when you do "Download/Sync Now..." or restart the Thunderbird client. Any new folders (labels) created in Gmail will sync to the client and any folders moved/changed/deleted folders in Gmail will move/change/delete on the client as well. (Note: Thunderbird has the concept of "subscribing" to IMAP folders (assumingly allowing you to determine which folders you want, rather than bringing all of them down and dragging loads of data across the wire). When used against Gmail, Thunderbird appears to automatically subscribe to all folders (including when folders are newly created in Gmail), so this might be why the refresh is happening properly.) This behavior is what I want with Exchange. When using Thunderbird with Exchange (2007), the folder list doesn't refresh when folders are added/changed/deleted on the server and/or from a different mail client. When I look at the subscription options, some are checked and some are not (not sure why Thunderbird picked some and not others). And when I add new folders on the server and/or from another client, they never even appear in Thunderbird's list of folders, preventing me from subscribing to them.

• How can I debug a port/connectivity issue?

  I am running a simple WebSocket server on Amazon EC2 (Fedora Core). I've opened the relevant port using ec2-authorize, and checked that it's opened. Iptables is definitely not running. However I can't connect to the port from outside EC2. I've tried the following (my server is running on port 7000): telnet ec2-public-dns.xx.xx.xx.amazon.com 7000 (from within EC2: connects fine) nmap localhost (output includes line: 7000/tcp open afs3-fileserver) telnet ec2-public-dns.xx.xx.xx.amazon.com 7000 (this time from my local machine: I get "connection refused: Unable to connect to remote host") The strange thing is this: if I start Nginx on port 7000 then it works and I can connect from outside EC2! And the WebSocket server fails on port 80, where Nginx works fine. To me this suggests a problem with the WebSocket server, BUT I can connect to it successfully from within EC2. (And it works fine on a different VPS account). How can I debug this further? If anybody can stop me tearing my hair out, I'd be very grateful indeed :)

• Dual-booting Ubuntu and Pardus with GRUB2...Pardus no show?

  Hello all, I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and used to dual-boot Fedora, but I replaced Fedora with Pardus. After the install, I went into ubuntu, and did a sudo update-grub. It detected my Pardus 2011 install there. When I rebooted, it did not show up in my grub2 menu however. I went back to Ubuntu and did it again...then checked the grub.cfg, and it is not there. I have read that Pardus uses a grub legacy. How can I get Pardus into my grub2 menu? • FreeBSD 8.1 unstable network connection

  I have three FreeBSD 8.1 running on three different hardware and therefore consist of different network adapter as well (bce, bge and igb). I found that the network connection is kind of unstable which I have tried to scp some 10MB file and found that I cannot always get the files completed successfully. I have further checked with my network admin and he claim that the problem is being caused by the network driver which cannot support the load whereby he tried to ping using huge packet size (around 15k) and my server will drop packet consistently at a regular interval. I found that this statement may not be valid since the three server is using three different network drive and it would be quite impossible that the same problem is being caused by three different network adapter and thus different network driver. • Problems with synaptic touchpad

  The "enhanced" features of the synaptics touchpad (ie scroll, pinch zoom) on my windows 7 64 bit dell studio 17 only work intermittently. This was an issue with the original OEM driver and also with the new driver from synaptics - please do not suggest that i update, reinstall, install as administrator, check or jiggle the driver - if i hear that one more time i will freak out. I have researched this for days and appears to be a common problem without a solution (many suggestions to update the driver though -argh). Dell and synaptics have not been helpful. I have checked that syntpehn.exe and syntphelper.exe are running (sometimes the UAC seems to block syntpehn.exe from running at startup). When the touchpad fails i can still use it to control the pointer and access the synaptics settings although some of the options are disabled (greyed out or simply unresponsive). It is the only pointing device i have installed - i had a logitech trackball attached but have uninstalled all software and drivers (including hidden devices) as per synaptic. It is also the only device using IRQ 12. Any help would be greatly appreciated except "update the driver".

• Google Chrome doesn't delete my browsing history correctly

  I have deleted everything that I could from my browser history: chrome://settings/clearBrowserData I checked everything and select the begining of time Then when I access browsing history: chrome://history/ There is nothing (as I expected), or to be precise No history entries found. The problem is that I still see my specific search url with very specific query I have made a month ago, when I start typing the url of the website into chrome address bar. How is that possible? Where is Google stroing these data. How to get rid off them completely? I want to mention that my autosuggestion options look like this: So, what else should I delete to remove everything from autosuggestions? Right now it has some specific URLs (subpages, pages with very specific search query I have made in a month or so). I have tried restarting Chrome and restarting my computer, but the urls are still in the autosuggestion. Also I am unable to turn off the autosuggestion, even I have unchecked that option in settings. My Google Chrome version is: Version 27.0.1453.116 m (probably the latest) Btw. in Firefox deleting the history works as expected. So, I guess that this has nothing to do with the operating system I am using (Windows 7), but only it's an issue with Chrome itself.

• Ubuntu 12.04 - HP ProLiant DL380 G4 - Load Maxes Out / Unresponsive

  Trying to post this question on here. I've posted it on the Ubuntu forums as well with no replies. Recently I upgraded an HP ProLiant DL380 G4 server from Ubuntu 10.04 server to Ubuntu 12.04 server. Upon doing so, the server will not - at random times - get to a load of 400+ and then become completely non-responsive. I use an SNMP graphing program (cacti) and the load steadily increases by about 10 every five minutes until it gets over 400 and the graphing stops. The graphs may not be accurate, but the CPU load averages about 3% before this happens - and right when the load starts increasing, it jumps to about 25% for 15 minutes and dramatically dips down to less than 1% (about 0.3%) until the graphing stops. I'm not able to open a SSH tunnel to the server to do anything. I've checked the /var/log/syslog and all logging stops at that time as well - with nothing else in there. The odd thing is - the server still responds to DNS queries for the zones it is authoritative on during this time - and at normal speed. Just not sure what the next step would be in order to find out what is going on - and how this issue can be corrected. The server cannot stay with Ubuntu 10.04 Server and needs to stay upgraded.

• LG W3000H-BN monitor cannot go above 1280x800

  I noticed that there are many people complaining about this issue with the W3000H but I have yet to find a solution that works for me. I am using Windows 7 Professional and and using a nVidia Quadro NVS 240 video card with a 4 monitor splitter cable. The cable from the monitor and the splitter are rated DVI-D Dual Link and the video card itself is rated for 2560x1600. I have installed the latest drivers for the video card and just grabbed the .inf, icm and cat file from the LG website and manually installed the monitor drivers. Does anyone have problems with the same setup? I have 3 other monitors (2 at 1920x1080 and 1 at 1280x1024). I really would like to be able to display the full resolution or else the large screen is useless. (I triple checked that the monitor itself supports this resolution). So monitor, cable, splitter and card supposedly support 2560x1600. Drivers are up to date but I cannot select that resolution when in the "Screen Resolution" menu, nor through the nVidia control panel. Please save me from madness :)

• Apache crashes every 5min

  I'm relatively new to server issues, having a site of mine that I started early in the year grow beyond my capabilities of managing it. I need help. I recently moved out of my shared hosting environment onto a dedicated virtual server from Mediatemple. Each week, I run a script that fetches data from my DB, fetches data from last.fm's API and then tweets information to Twitter. My server uses Virtuozzo and when the script runs, Apache crashes every 5min. I checked and saw that the 'kmemsize' parameter reaches its cap (its 13mb). I realise my problem. The MySQL process stays open for long while Apache needs to handle lots of incoming links (about 200 000 pageviews for that day according to my previous host's AWSTATS). Yes, I'm quite unexperienced in this, and I'm clearly killing the server with too many incoming links while it has to manage the updating of the DB. So that is the precedent: I want a few answers. 1) Why did my shared hosting environment not crash apache every 5min? It ran fine, the site only slowed a lot. Clearly, it must be the virtual container and the kmemsize limit? 2) Where do I go from here? Would a physical server (not a virtual container) encounter the same problems? I sent a support request to Mediatemple as well. I need all the help I can get.

• CDROM does not appear on desktop, MACOS 10.5.7

  When I pop a CDROM into the drive of my Macbook Pro, It spins up, I hear it, but no icon appears on the desktop. (I think it's 10.5.7; actually not sure how to verify this on Mac, but I think I saw a 10.5.7 flash by somewhere). In the finder preferences, I have "Show these items on the Desktop" set to show HDs, External Disks, and CDs, DVDs, and ipods. All three of those are checked. I do see the internal HD on the desktop. In Disk utility I can see the CD/DVD hardware. It says "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E...". From Disk Utility I can eject the drive. But in Finder, there is never a CD/DVD listed under "Devices". When I insert a disk, nothing happens, I cannot see it. I also cannot boot from bootable CDROMs by holding C down . Suggestions? I am not very experienced with Mac; I have used Windows for years. EDIT Two updates: I saw this article on support.apple.com, and modified the hostconfig appropriately. It did not have the AUTODISKMOUNT entry, so I added one, rebooted. Same behavior. It does not see the CDROM in Finder, does not mount it on desktop. I put an old manufactured CDROM into the drive, and voila! it showed up on the desktop. The CD that does not appear is a GNome Partition Editor Live CD, which I guess is based on debian. That CD boots in other (non-Mac) PCs. I want to use this to adjust the Bootcamp partition. Suggestions?

• How to send mail with PHP [migrated]

  My litle problem is about mail() function in PHP, it doesnt want to send emails, to my local server, or anywhere else. I don't think that function was supposed to send mail to adresses like: [email protected]; So I've installed a mail server: hmailserver, I installed a client: dream-mail; I installed sendmaill.exe; (actually unzipped it in a folder, then in php.ini set the sendmail_path to point to it) After countless trials and errors, it still doesn't work. my system would comprise in an Apache server 2.2, and PHP (last version I think 5.3 or somehing), running on windows. And now for avoiding the usual questions (Did you make rules in your firewall etc etc), I guess I should mention, that there arent any connectivity issues, everything is set to "local" (localhost), port 25, 110, 143, are all opened, And, after a few days of fiddling with my brand new mail-server, I manage to make it work. THe Dream-mail client, has a test, trough which it would test its connections, and according to it, the SMTP AND POP3 connections are all successful, it even sends an email, for testing. SO ya, it would work. The problem, remains: PHP mail funcion. And I really need it, since on my website there's a contact form, and right now is useless. I've also checked the form it self, and seems to be alright.

• Managing multiple IMAP accounts in Thunderbird

  I've been using Thunderbird for years without issues with 20+ pop3 accounts. I'm moving over to imap which will enable me to keep copies of the emails locally and on the server whilst keeping everthing synchronised. However I'm looking for the best way to manage multiple imap accounts on Thunderbird. Currently I have a filter that copies all the emails into a central inbox and into seperate local folders. The reason for this is I go through my inbox daily and delete all emails that don't require any action. I move any emails that require action to my "action" imap account folder. This way I can syncronise all the emails that require action across multiple computers (and mobile devices). This technique is my implemantion of the GTD or Getting things Done philosophy. I also copy over each email into seperate local folders. The reason I do this is just in case any emails on the imap accounts get deleted, or something drastic happens on the server which means I lose all the emails. My business partner has access to some of these emails and still uses pop3 (with "leave copy on server" checked), but I know sometimes Thunderbird can still delete emails off the server sometimes. The problem with the above is that thunderbird gives me the dreaded error dialogue saying that the emails cannot be filtered due to another process. I find the folder list in Thunderbird hard to manage. Here is a screenshot of part of my folder list- as you can see it's a bit of a complicated list and not easy to manage: What would be the best way of me managing multiple imap accounts whilst allowing me to have copies put in a central folder and emails in local folders? It would be useful if people think this is necessary, as perhaps there is a betterway? How do people manage multiple imap accounts in a way that allows them to keep on top of actionable emails? I'd be interested in how others manage this. I've never used the Thunderbird-based client "Postbox", does this handle multiple imaps better?

• Can't login to phpMyAdmin on a WAMP server running Windows 2008

  I am setting up a new server. I have installed Apache 2.2.17, PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.53 and phpMyAdmin 3.3.8 running on a Windows 2008 (32 bit) OS. I have configured Apache and PHP so they appear to be working fine. I have created the standard test php page with the following code and everything appears to be working fine. <?php //index.php phpinfo(); ?> I also see the mySQL and mySQLi section in the above webpage, so it appears that that I have the proper extensions loaded for mySQL access. The problem that I am having centeres around myPHPAdmin. I have this installed and I can access to the login screen at http://localhost/pma I login using "root" and the password I have setup for root. After a delay of 30 seconds or so the web page goes to a blank screen, and the url is now http://localhost/pma/index.php?token= No error is ever displayed - however nothing usable is either. I have confirmed that mySQL is running by going to the command line and logging into mySQL from there. I have double checked my configuration but I am not having any luck getting this to work. I have also disabled the Windows firewall, but that did not change anything. I installed mySQL using the standard port 3306. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Bad font anti-aliasing in Ubuntu

  I'm switching from Fedora 8 to Ubuntu 9.04, and I can't seem to get it to get a good font anti-aliasing to work. It seems that Ubuntu's fontconfig tries to keep characters in integral pixel widths. This makes text more difficult to read, when 1 pixel is too thin and 2 pixels is too thick. Check the image below. In Fedora, when fontconfig anti-aliasing is enabled, fonts have their thickness proportional to the font size. Below, the thickness is different for 8, 9 and 10pt sizes. In Ubuntu, on the other hand, even when anti-aliasing is enabled, all 8, 9 and 10pt sizes have 1 pixel thickness. This makes reading larges amount of text difficult. I'm using the very same home directory, and I already checked that X resources are the same in both systems: ~% xrdb -query | grep Xft Xft.antialias: 1 Xft.dpi: 96 Xft.hinting: 1 Xft.hintstyle: hintfull Xft.rgba: none GNOME settings: ~% gconftool-2 -a /desktop/gnome/font_rendering antialiasing = grayscale hinting = full dpi = 96 rgba_order = rgb So, the question is: What should I change in the new box (Ubuntu) in order to get anti-aliasing like in the old box (Fedora)?

• PHP enable sqlite phpinfo states --without-sqlite

  I've seen similar questions but none that address my situation adequately. I'm running Apache and PHP 5.3.6 on a amazon cloud server. phpinfo keeps stating that sqlite is disabled. At least that what it seems from the configure line: './configure' ... '--without-sqlite' In other parts of phpinfo() output: PDO PDO drivers mysql, sqlite PDO Driver for SQLite 3.x enabled SQLite Library 3.6.20 sqlite3 SQLite3 support enabled SQLite3 module version 0.7-dev SQLite Library 3.6.20 Directive Local Value Master Value sqlite3.extension_dir no value no value and at least one the following PHP commands fail: if (!extension_loaded('SQLite') OR !function_exists('sqlite_open')) Yum install states that both sqlite and pdo-lite are already installed. I've tried to enable sqlite by editing my local php.ini by adding: ; Enable sqlite3 extension module extension=sqlite3.so I've checked the main php.ini (/etc/php.ini) and there is nothing specific about disabling it. In fact, there is a sub-conig file loaded in php.d that also specifies this extension as well as another for the pdo-sqlite I'm running of things to look for or try. Any suggestions. • Very long (>300s) request processing time on Apache Server serving static content from particular IP

  We are running an Apache 2.2 server for a very large web site. Over the past few months we have been having some users reporting slow response times, while others (including our resources, both on the internal network and our home networks) do not see any degradation in performance. After a ton of investigation, we finally found a "Deny from none" statement in our configuration that was causing reverse DNS lookups (which were timing out) that solved the bulk of our issues, but we still have some customers that we are seeing in the Apache logs (using %D in the log format) with request processing times of 300s for images, css, javascript and other static content. We've checked all Deny / Allow statements for reoccurrence of "none", as well as all other things we know of that would cause reverse DNS lookups (such as using "REMOTE_HOST" in rewrite rules, using %a instead of %h in our log format configuration) as well as verified that HostnameLookups is set to "Off". As an aside, we've also validated that reverse DNS lookups for folks having this problem do not time out - so I'm fairly certain DNS is not an issue in this case. I've run out of ideas. Are there any Apache configuration scenarios that someone can point me to that I might be missing that would cause request times for static content to take so long only for certain users? However othe side, CI server copies the key to the host but still asks password ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@webserver-address user@webserver-address's password: Now try logging into the machine, with "ssh 'user@webserver-address'", and check in: .ssh/authorized_keys to make sure we haven't added extra keys that you weren't expecting. I checked on the web server and the CI server public key has been copied to web server authorized_keys but when I connect, It asks password. ssh 'user@webserver-address' user@webserver-address's password: If I try use root user rather than my created user (both users are with copied public keys). • Syncing Exchange Inbox subfolders to Blackberry

  Hello - I have a Blackberry user that has organized his Outlook such that he manually sorts mail messages into specific subfolders. Example - |--> Inbox |---->Mail from 2004 ( Subfolder of Inbox ) |--------> Business ( Subfolder of Mail from 2004 ) |--> Personal |--> Travel |--> Mail from 2003 When using the Blackberry this user is able to view the folder, however the folder is empty, despite knowing the folder has mail messages in it on the Exchange server. The handheld appears to sync without issue. The user receives new mail messages. I have Folder Redirection enabled and all folders checked marked. I am using BES 4.0. So, I guess my questions is this - How are the Outlook subfolders sync'd with the Hnadheld? Additionally, if a mail message is on the handheld is moved into a subfolder from the handheld, will it be sync'd on the Exchange server? Thanks in advance!

Connection failed: SQLState: 'HYT00' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Login timeout expired I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2, and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Advanced without errors. I'll be using the database locally for an app installed on the same PC. I'm able to successfully connect with SQL Server Management Studio using Windows Authentication (my Windows account is a member of local Administrators), and I can successfully create a database with default ownership (defaults to my Windows account). SQL Server Configuration Manager shows that Shared Memory, TCP/IP, and Named Pipes are enabled for SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration, SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration (32bit), and SQL Server Network Configuration (SQLEXPRESS). The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SQLEXPRESS) services are running. When I create a system DSN, my driver choices are SQL server (sqlsrv32.dll 4-10-09), which gives a generic wizard, and SQL Server Native Client 10.0 (sqlncli10.dll 7-10-08), which gives the SQL Server 2008 wizard. I choose the latter. I enter name, description, and have tried both MyPCName and 127.0.0.1 for the server name (browsing turns up nothing). After clicking Next, I leave it at Integrated Windows authentication, and leave Connect to server for additional options checked. After clicking Next, I get the error above. I know it's probably a simple answer, (permission issue?) and I'm a SQL noob, so I appreciate anything that would point me in the right direction. Thanks!

  I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. 1) it is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) 2) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. 3) reset the PRAM. Nope. 4) checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. ============= I need to say that: a) the device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause) b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system.
