connecting to secure database on private network from website host

Hello all, I've got a requirement to both read and write data via a .net webservice to a sqlserver database that's on a private network. this database is currently accessed via a vpn connection by remote client software (on standard desktop machines) to get latest product prices and to upload product stock sales. I've been tasked with finding a way to centralise this access from a webservice that the clients then access, rather than them using the vpn route to connect directly to the database. My question is related to my .net service's relationship to the sqlserver database. What are the options for connecting to a private network vpn from a domain host in order to achive the functionality of allowing the webservice to both read and write data to the database. For now, I'm not too concerned about the client connectivity and security (tho i appreciate that this will have to be worked out too), I'm really just interested in discovering the options available in order to allow my .net webservice to connect to the private network in as painless and transparent a way as posible. [edit] the webservice will also be available to the retail website in order for it to lookup product info as well as allocate stock transfers to the same sqlserver db. it will therefore be located on the same domain as the retail site The option of switching the database onto public hosting is not feasible, so I have to work with the scenario as described above for now, unless there's a compelling rationale presented to do otherwise. thanks all... jim

ios UITableView reloadData don't increase content height

I'm facing a strange error in my iOS app and haven't been able to figure out the reason why. In my UITableView i can add new cells, so i refresh the array that is the datasource and call reloadData. Everything works without error. The numberOfRowsInSection is called again, and it's value is one more than it's previous value was. The new cell even gets inserted at the bottom of the tableview, but i cant scroll down to it. I only know that it's there because the tableview bounces and i can see it. I'm guessing the tableview's content height is not getting increased for some reason, but i have no idea why. I'm using iOS 6 btw. Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks, Zoli EDIT, answers for Srikanth's questions: How is data getting added. There's an NSArray containing objects of a specific type. The array.count is the number of the number of cells. This NSArray gets its values from a database query. When you say, you are refreshing the array, what do you mean. By refreshing the array i mean i execute a new query in the database and put the results of this query into an NSArray. this will be the tableview's datasource array. Like this: dataSourceArray = [dbManager executeQuery]; [tableView reloadData]; Are you adding the data within the same view controller Yes. Can you show some code as to what you are doing See above. Is the table view at the root of the view controllers view or is it within another view The tableview is the main view's first child. Can you try adding data to the array at the beginning, so that you can view the cell being added at the top. I don't understand what you mean.

CMS for managing plain-text content, with tagging

Hi, We have some quite-specific requirements for our app that a CMS may help us with, and were hoping that someone may know of a CMS that matches these requirements (it's quite a laborous task to download each CMS and verify this manually). We want a CMS to allow users to create and manage articles, but storing the articles in plain-text only. All of the CMSs that we have looked at so far are geared towards creating HTML pages. We want the CMS to manage workflow (approval process), and tracking of history. The requirements for plain text only is that the intent is to allow business people to generate content which we are going to display in our Silverlight application - we don't want to go down the route of hosting and displaying arbitrary HTML in the app as we want the styling to be seamless with our app, amongst other reasons. We would also want to allow the user to be able to link between articles, but not to external sites (i.e. HTML with no formatting, or some other way of specifying article links), and the third requirement is the ability to tag articles and search on articles. Does anyone know of any non-HTML targetted CMS systems that may match these requirements? Thanks, Gary

PHP IF stops IE content from loading

scenario I have a PHP if statement to test if a user is logging in for the first time ever. This then displays, a demo in a greybox popup box. Sadly when the box loads in IE, the content of the website doesn't. This means when I user closes the box, they are left the with background. Trying to load an external php file into another onClick. Iframes will not work as the size of the content changes with collapsible panels. That leaves AJAX. Hello, I have a little issue concerning an animation-effect which loads a certain div into the body of the site. Let me be more precise: I have a div with the id 'contact': <div id="contact">content</div> The jquery code loads the contents within that div, when I press the link with the id 'ajax_contact': <a href="#" id="ajax_contact">link</a>. The code is working perfectly. However, I want #contact to be HIDDEN when the site loads, i.e. the default state must be non-visible. Only when the user clicks the link #ajax_contact, the div must appear. Entering Content Into A MySQL Database Via A Form

I've been working on creating a form that submits content into my database but I decided that rather than using a drop down menu to select the date I'd rather use a textfield. Tab Content Does Not Refresh After First Click of Like Button

I've implemented a very simple "like guard" for a facebook tab, and am running into an issue with my test users. Multiple testers are reporting that when they open a tab and click the "like" button, they do not always get a page refresh (so the like guard does not disappear until they do a manual reload). This is using facebook's like button at the top of the page, not one I've coded up myself. As a sanity check, I enabled some simple logging on my server and have been able to recreate the issue - I hit "like" or "unlike" but there seems to be no request made to my index.php page, so definitely no refresh happening. I'm aware of this old bug https://developers.facebook.com/bugs/228778937218386 but this one seems different. For starters, after the first click of the "like" button, if I just continue clicking unlike/like/.... then the refresh happens automatically, as expected. What's especially weird is that if I reload the page after the first failed refresh, the refreshes start working again as expected, ie the first update to my like status triggers a page refresh. Some possibly (?) relevant info: My Tab is part of a test page, and is unpublished I am only using http hosting for the tab content, since my https isn't set up yet So far I've just tested with other admins - so maybe user role affects this? Curious to see if anyone has run into this issue before.

Determine asymmetric latencies in a network

Imagine you have many clustered servers, across many hosts, in a heterogeneous network environment, such that the connections between servers may have wildly varying latencies and bandwidth. You want to build a map of the connections between servers my transferring data between them. Of course, this map may become stale over time as the network topology changes - but lets ignore those complexities for now and assume the network is relatively static. Given the latencies between nodes in this host graph, calculating the bandwidth is a relative simply timing exercise. I'm having more difficulty with the latencies - however. To get round-trip time, it is a simple matter of timing a return-trip ping from the local host to a remote host - both timing events (start, stop) occur on the local host. What if I want one-way times under the assumption that the latency is not equal in both directions? Assuming that the clocks on the various hosts are not precisely synchronized (at least that their error is of the the same magnitude as the latencies involved) - how can I calculate the one-way latency? In a related question - is this asymmetric latency (where a link is quicker in direction than the other) common in practice? For what reasons/hardware configurations? Certainly I'm aware of asymmetric bandwidth scenarios, especially on last-mile consumer links such as DSL and Cable, but I'm not so sure about latency. Added: After considering the comment below, the second portion of the question is probably better off on serverfault.

Read/Write Files from the Content Provider

I want to be able to create a file from the Content Provider, however I get the following error: java.io.Filenotfoundexception: /0: open file failed: erofs (read-only file system) What I am trying to do is create a file whenever an application calls the insert method from my Provider. This is the excerpt of the code that does the file creation: FileWriter fstream = new FileWriter(valueKey); BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(fstream); out.write(valueContent); out.close(); Originally I wanted to use openFileOutput() but the function appears to be undefined. Anyone has a workaround to this problem? EDIT: I found out that I had to specify the directory as well. Here is a more complete snippet of the code: File file = new File("/data/data/Project.Package.Structure/files/"+valueKey); file.createNewFile(); FileWriter fstream = new FileWriter(file); BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(fstream); out.write(valueContent); out.close(); I also enabled the permission <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_INTERNAL_STORAGE" /> This time I got an error saying: java.io.IOException: open failed: ENOENT (No such file or directory)

Colorbox iFrame content not appearing in IE 8/9

I'm using ColorBox to call a few informational modals on-screen and given the client's requirements, the best way to do this is via iFrames (not my first choice but whatever). Everything is working peachy in Chrome, FF, etc. but the iFrame content is not working in any version of IE. The modal wrapper appears but nothing is inside. This is what I've done so far: Changed the doctype to transitional and strict for IE. No dice. Removed the "iframe: true" and replaced it with HTML "Hello". That worked fine and "Hello" appeared in the Colorbox modal. I've removed all stylesheets from the header. No luck so it's not a CSS issue. Just to be sure, I rolled back my JQuery library to 1.6.2 from 1.8.2. Nothing there, either. Any help would be appreciated. This is aggravating. I am now working on modify the provided template (from DevExpress) to create new web form using ASP.NET 2.0 on Visual Studio 2008. While the functionality of that web form is there, I am in the process of get rid of ninety something warning message, most of them come from the provided template. How to use Node.js to build pages that are a mix between static and dynamic content?

All pages on my 5 page site should be output using a Node.js server. Most of the page content is static. At the bottom of each page, there is a bit of dynamic content. Raspberry Pi broadcast serial port data to local network

I didn't find anything to help me with this problem. What I want is: Serial device sends repeatedly some data to serial port. Raspberry Pi should get this data from RxD and stream it to local network via port 10001 without filtering it. So I can find this device on my pc. This should also work in other direction: Raspberry listen to port 10001 and forward all data from local network to TxD. I'm newbie in Linux World. How can I listen to some port on Raspberry Pi and send broadcast to the same port? I'm using Raspbian Wheezy with soft float. I have found a library Pi4j for Java, that I already use to get and write data from/to serial port. final Serial serial = SerialFactory.createInstance(); serial.addListener(new SerialDataListener() { public void dataReceived(SerialDataEvent event) { forward(event.getData()); } }); event.getData() is a String, which I want to broadcast in my local network. Is it generally a good Idea to use Java for that? I need also a String from port 10001, which I can forward to serial port.

The right approach to loading dynamic content into a UITableView in iOS

ok, I've read tons of bits and pieces on the subject of loading dynamic content (from the web) into a UITableView and the problem with calculating cell height upfront. I've tried different simple implementations but the problem persists... Assuming I need to read a JSON file from the web, parse it into 'item' objects, each with variable size image and various text labels, here is what I believe would be the right approach to avoid long hang time of the app while everything is loading: on app load read JSON file and parse into items array provide only small part of the items array to the tableview (about 10 items) - since I need to load the images associated with each item to calculate cell height - I don't want the view to go through the whole items list and load all images - this hangs the app until every image is loaded display the tableview with the available cells (assuming I load a few 'spare' ones, user can even scroll to more items) in the background using Grand Central Dispatch download images for all/some of the remaining items and then reload the tableview with the new data (repeat step 4 if item list is very long) Step 2 above is necessary since I have no way to calculate the cell height without loading the images first, and since tableview first calculates height of all cells it may take a very long time to download all images for all items. Would you say this is the right approach? am I missing something?

Updating DIV with XML content on Hover (JQuery)

Hi everyone! The concept of what I'm trying to do is fairly simple. I have a grid of company logos loaded through XSLT from an XML document, each with their own unique links to the company profiles. I have a separate div on the page, essentially a "preview" box. What I want to do is this: I roll over a logo, and it loads the name of the company and a short description into the preview div. This content is loaded through XML. I have been messing around with the Jquery load() function, changing the target document to load on Hover—and it almost gets what I want, but it loads the whole target XML document into the div. How can I separate this target XML data into separate divs? (which I have styled differently) I'd assume I would make use of Ajax in some way. I want to load the <name> node into the name_div, and the <desc> node into the description_div, and have them update on hover. Thanks in advance for the help!

CSS to Make 2 Column Content Areas

I'm trying to stray away from using tables to form the layout of my content, and I can think of two alternatives that I'd like to better learn: (1) styling list items to be side-by-side, and (2) using div blocks that float onto the same line. Both of these would have their own uses for what I'm working on. I'm already using div tags to form the entire layout of my three-column template, but what I need to do now is a bit different. In case it helps, my project can be found here. In short, here's my question; how would I style a div so that the width of it is 50% of the width of the area it occupies, rather than 50% of the width of the page? As for my other question, what would be the best approach to styling list items so that they are side-by-side? I'm working on a registration script now, and instead of using a table with "Username" on the left and the input text on the right, I can use two list items. It's late and I've been working on this project of mine for about 8 hours straight now, so I apologize if I'm asking anything confusing. Feel free to ask me any questions about what I'm trying to do. I have a div which contains several elements: <div class="menuItem designMenu" id="dMenu"> <ul class="menuList menu"> <li class="menuHeader">Design</li> <li class="projectHeader">Mother</li> <li class="projectBody">Some text here</li> <li class="more">More</li> </ul> </div> I need to get the height of the dMenu items that I can animate it upwards, including all the content inside. My Javascript currently: var designHeight = $("#dMenu").height(); Returns nothing. I've tried offsetHeight, scrollHeight, and everything else Google turns up. I'm running the JQuery at the end of the body, inside a document ready function. The reason to get the height to animate, instead of doing it manually, is that a: I'd like to learn how and b: I don't yet know how many items will be int he div. Thanks.

Determining unknown content-types with the Html5 file api

I'm working through a small file upload script (learning experience) and I noticed that when selecting microsoft office related files (.doc or .docx for example) the file objects do not have a type specified: For .doc files I had expected the type to be "application/msword" and along the same train of thought .docx to be "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document". In the cases when the type cannot be determined is the correct course of action to look at the file extension and match that to the "expected" content / mime type?
