• Windows Server 2003 Synchronize Not Sticking

  We have a Windows Server 2003. It had Raid running on 2 disks. One disk failed and the Raid Controller failed. We replaced the disk and controller and restored everything. No data was lost. The users of that server found that there were a number of directories that appeared empty. We found that from their machine, we could right-click on the directory and select "Synchronize" and the files in the directory would now be visible to them. However, when opening Internet Explorer and browsing the web and ftp'ing to a web site, the files in the directory would vanish. We would have to "Synchronize" them again to get them to reappear. What is going on to cause this need to Synchronize and then re-Synchronize again? What do we need to do to fix this so that the directories are permanently visible?

• Can SATA be used to connect computers?

  Can SATA be used to connect two computers together, just like a crossover Ethernet cable would do ? I know SATA has no "networking" features and even though a controller may have multiple ports, the drives don't "see" each other, and that in SATA one device acts as the host (the computer) and the other device is some kind of "client" (the storage drive). But still, did anyone attempt to make a kernel module that would make one computer appear as a "client" (so that the host's SATA controller detects it as a standard hard drive) and then set up like a pseudo-Ethernet link or a very high speed serial link (and then run pppd on it and do networking) ? Note : I know this is an unprofessional and totally stupid idea, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

• Stop RAID 5 from Initializing

  Hi, I am trying to follow Ictinike's guide on Recovering Intel RAID "Non-Member Disk" Error found here, Ictinike's RAID recovery Guide I have recreated my RAID array as per the instructions. However my RAID array status is then automatically set to: INITIALIZE When I boot back into my Windows XP desktop, the Intel Matrix Storage Utility begins to "Initialize" my drives. This is a long slow process that will take about 20 hours. I suspect all my data will be lost. I have gone back into my bios and disabled my RAID controller to prevent any further initialization and data loss. I have read that initialization will cause data loss. I've also read somewhere that it won't. I am not so confident in the latter. Is there anyway to stop this initialization process so I can continue to follow the steps in the recovery guide? • Simultaneous read/write to RAID array slows server to a crawl

  Fairly beefy NFS/SMB server (32GB RAM, 2 Xeon quad cores) with LSI MegaRAID 8888ELP controlling 12 drives configured into 3 different arrays. 5 2TB drives are grouped into a RAID 6 array. As expected, write performance to the array is slow. However, sustained, simultaneous read/write to the array (wether through NFS or done locally) seems to practically block any other access to anything else on the controller. For example, if I do: cp /home/joe/BigFile /home/joe/BigFileCopy where BigFile is 20G, then even a simple ls /home/jane will take many 10s of seconds to complete. In addition, an ls /backup will also take many tens of seconds, even though /backup is a different array on the same controller. As soon as the cp is done, everything is back to normal. cp /home/joe/BigFile /backup/BigFile does not exhibit this behavior. It's only when doing read/write to the same array.

• Windows Disk I/O Analysis

  It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

• GoogleTest C++ Framework Incompatible With XCode 4.5.2 and OSX 10.8.2

  I am trying to follow the instructions mentioned here for setting up Google's C++ framework in XCode Version 4.5.2 (4G2008a). First, I got "The run destination My Mac 64-bit is not valid for Running the scheme 'gtest-framework'". I was able to change the build SDK following the instructions here Unable to build using Xcode 4 - The selected run destination is not valid for this action, except this resulted in many build failures such as "Unsupported compiler '4.0' selected for architecture 'x86_64'" and "Unsupported compiler '4.0' selected for architecture 'i386'" I've changed nothing out of the box, so this is very frustrating that I cannot seem to get this to build. • Simple active directory permissions issue

  So I've created a domain controller (DC) as well as 3 machines (SQL-A, SQL-B, SQL-CORE). All are running Windows Server2008R2 (on virtualbox). I have successfully joined the 3 machines to the domain controller. Next I created a user in active directory called Kim_Akers who is a member of "Domain Admins", "Domain users", "Enterprise Admins" and "Schema Admins". However when I login to SQL-A for example as contso/Kim_Akers and then try and run something like the ServerManager.msc I can't do it due to lack of permissions "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions". What am I doing wrong that Kim_Akers doesn't have permissions to do this? Thanks.

• Developer Laptop with SQL Server 2008 can't login to SSIS when offsite

  When I bring my Windows XP (SP3) laptop home I can still login as my domain account because Windows caches the info necessary to authenticate me when the domain controller isn't around. However, when I try to connect to Integration Services from within SQL Server Management Studio, it generates SSPI context errors. The only way it works is if I connect to the office with VPN or if I'm at the office where the domain controller is. I have both SQL Server Agent and SQL Server Integration Services 10 running under local computer accounts. It seems that the only option to connect to Integration Services from within Management Studio is to use Window authentication. Is there any way to do this when I'm not connected to the office? Why don't these services use the cached info just like Windows Login? Thanks.

• Why maximum 1.0 Gbit Ethernet connection an old notebook, and only 100 Mbit on newer faster computer

  Strange problem about Ethernet speed: recently we bought an i7 core computer running Win7 64 bit with an onboard Gigabit Ethernet controller (Realtek PCIe Gbit Ethernet Family controller). Connecting this new fast pc directly to our brand new ASUS Gigabit Ethernet router via CAT6 cable(!) shows up the adapter status (see picture attached) only 100mbit, while the router is capable of 1000 mbit. More facts: Connecting an 8 year old IBM notebook with gigabit ethernet to the same cable end shows 1.0 Gbit connection in its adapter status. Speedtest.net shows 35 mbit/s down on the new computer Speedtest.net shows 78 mbit/s down on the old rusty IBM notebook. We have an 120 mbit down internet connection, which we we truly receive on another pc (also directly connected to the router) How to get the 1.0 Gbit going in the new pc ?

• Unable to create system partition or locate existing system partition during Windows-7 installation

  I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2x 500gb drives in RAID1 using the NV RAID controller. On this there are 3 partitions (XP, XP backup and DATA) There are also 4x 500gb drives in RAID10 using the Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy? EDIT: As suggested on another forum, I tried downloading the nVidia Mainboard RAID drivers for Windows 2003 64-bit. I loaded the drivers successfully using the Load Driver button, but pressing NEXT still returns this error.

  In general, and understanding the answer may vary by manufacturer and model (and driver, and...), in consumer-grade workstations with integrated NICs, does the NIC rely on the CPU for a lot of help (as is typically the case with a USB controller, for instance), or is it fairly intelligent and capable on its own (like, say, the typical Firewire controller)? Or is the question too general to answer? (If it matters, you can assume Linux.) Background: I'm looking at connecting a device (digital television capture) that will be delivering ~20-50 Mbit/sec of data to a somewhat under-powered workstation. I can get a USB 2 High-speed device, or a network-attached device, and am interested in avoiding impacting the CPU where possible. Obviously, if it's a 100Mbit NIC, that's roughly half its theoretical inbound bandwidth, whereas it's only roughly a tenth of the 480 Mbit/second the USB 2 "High Speed" interface. • How to set up Dell OMSA tools on Debian 6 (Squeeze) (PE2950)

  I assume I have set up them up incorrectly or am missing a library or dependency. When I log into the OMSA web interface I can't see anything Also, omreport tells me nothing; root@box:~# omreport storage controller No controllers found I assume these two will use the same source of information so what ever is wrong will fix them both. I set up OMSA as per these instructions. Also I have compiled MegaCLI (as this is a PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc 6/i controller) and I have used that to update the RAID firmware, so that works, but the Dell tools aren't. • Win7 x64 unresponsive for a minute or so. HD failing?

  On a fully updated Win7 x64, every so often the system stalls for a minute or so. This has been going on for a couple months now. By stalling I mean the mouse responds and I can move windows around, but any window, any program, that is open becomes whiteish when I select it AND any new programs will not open. It doesn't matter what kind of program it is. When the stall stops all clicks I made (open new programs for example) take effect. Nothing shows up consistently (as in every time this happens) in the event log. Today though I was able to find something, but it doesn't reveal much other than the "system was unresponsive". It's a 7009 for "A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Error Reporting Service service to connect." It doesn't matter if I have any USB devices plug-in or not. I've ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. While the machine is unresponsive, I've noticed that Drive D (the other partition on the single internal HD in this laptop) is displayed like this in explorer. This never occurs with Drive C or any other drive on the machine. . SMART report for the physical drive: Read benchmark by HD Tune 5 Pro, probably the most telling piece of the puzzle. Isn't this alone enough to see there is a problem with the drive, regardless of whether the unresponsiveness is caused by such purported problem? Which error it was trying to report I don't know. I check the "Reliability Monitor" and it shows no errors to be reported. I've disabled the windows error reporting service to see if the problem stops.

• Is it possible to install Windows Server 2012 on a Dell PowerEdge with PERC S100 card?

  According to Dell's own website, the Windows Server 2012 media driver "inbox" does not contain drivers for the Perc S100 controller that is in a Dell PowerEdge T110 II server we'd like to evaluate with Server 2012. I have found drivers only for Server 2008 R2, which is what the server is currently running. Is it possible to upgrade this server? (Booting up the Server 2012 DVD image leads to the expected result that it can not locate the system's hard drives or its hard drive controller card, as the drivers for the PERC S100 are not on the installation DVD image.)

• How can I make my monitor run at it's native resolution under Kubuntu 9.10?

  Hi, I have installed Kubuntu 9.10 afresh on an HP desktop computer with a Samsung SyncMaster 2243 and Intel integrated graphics card. • Cannot access Network Shares on Windows Server 2008 running VisualSVN Server

  I have installed VisualSVN server on Windows Server 2008. The server is part of a domain but not the domain controller, it is just a data server and now an SVN server. VisualSVN uses port 80 and can only be access from inside the network (i do i by going to the dns name of the server). However, ever since i have installed this, other computers on the network can no longer access the shared folders on the server EXCEPT the domain controller which has no problems accessing the shares. I am stumped, i am guessing it is something to do with Apache running and not using host-headers (or whatever the Apache equivalent may be) but just being bound to the servers DNS name or IP. Any suggestions?

• KVM Virtual guest Paused on Reboot

  I'm running REHL 6 and just installed a Ubuntu Server Guest via KVM set to start at boot. This works correctly and the guest loads, but it loads "paused" and requires that I manually un-pause it. Can someone give me a hint as to how I can I get the Guest OS to actually become active on boot? • Migrating SBS 2003 to 2012 standard

  My company is currently trying to migrate a Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. We know the general procedure, but we want to make sure we aren't going to mess anything up tremendously. Here's the steps we were planning on taking: 1. Uninstall exchange 2. Remove legacy GPO's 3. Demote the domain controller 4. Promote the new server to the primary domain controller. We have no mail servers to worry about. • Wireless technology - which is better: more single radio APs or less dual radio APs?

  We are currently talking to vendors of wireless solutions for a wireless deployment in a university campus with some 5000 students. One vendor is offering us a Cisco solution with a WLC 5508 controller and 69 2x2 MIMO Dual-band/Dual radio APs (Aironet AP 1042 model) The other vendor is offering us an Aruba solution with a 3600 controller and 96 2x2 MIMO dual band BUT single radio APs (Aruba AP93) Both vendors are charging 82.000 US$ (support, 3y service contracts, switches and additional required options all included of course) The Aruba vendor is trying to convince me that 96 single radio APs will give us more connection/users/capacity then the 69 dual radio APs. I have my doubts about that and since it is my core competence-domain I wanted to ask here the opinion of people that have a more profound knowledge and experience in this area. When you talk to vendors it's often hard to get objective information. So try to answer only if you are sure and please mention it if you are affiliated with one of the vendors. • IBM storage ds3400 Cant connect to management using fiber

  i have a problem with a DS3400 IBM storage system we bought a few years back. when i try to manage the storage using its IBM storage management i cant find it using automatic detection even though its connected directly using the fiber and i can see the Logical drives connected and working properly. when i tried to connect the two management Ethernet wires and manage the storage directly by entering the IP address manually i am able to connect however after i make several changes to the controller configuration one of the controllers stops responding and i am not able to ping it directly (since you cant make any changes without being connected to both controllers this is a problem) whats more bizarre is that when i change the IP of the controller that doesn't respond it starts working .. i have found some articles over the web explaining stuff about LUN31 being missing and causing similar problems however all my attempts to manually configure it failed . *link to an example http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5075711 in short im trying to get my storage to appear in the storage manager when directly connected using only the fiber cable directly attached. thanks in advance

• Why does unpartitioned Hitachi HDS5C3020 drive start consuming 50% more power 15 minutes after boot?

  In a Debian 6.0.6 system there are 74 pieces of 2TB Toshiba DT01ABA200 drives. These drives are identified as Hitachi HDS5C3020BLE630 drives running firmware revision MZ4OAAB0. 64 Drives attached via HP SAS expander cards to an LSI 2008 SAS controller, another 5 drives are connected directly to the mainboard, 4 drives are connected to a Sil based PCI controller and last 1 drive is only powered and has no data cable connected. The controller LSI and Sil card's their onboard BIOS are both disabled and the mpt2sas and sata_sil modules are removed from the Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 10:07:46 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux kernel. The mpt2sas module is loaded after boot using a modprobe command in /etc/rc.local. These 74 drives are not partitioned, neither formatted and also not mounted. The system consumes: with 0 drives: 70.6 - 70.9 Watt (also 15 minutes after boot); with 74 drives: 330 - 360 Watt, just after boot (is equivalent to 3.5 - 3.9W per drive in idle state); with 74 drives: 420 - 466 Watt, each time in the 15th minute of uptime (is equivalent to 4.7 - 5.3W per drive in idle state). The drive specification lists 4.7W as read/write, and 3.3W as idle power consumption. The increased power consumption is most likely on the 5V line, because after roughly 1 minute an "over current protection" (OCP) of the power supply (PSU) shuts down the power. The used PSU is a single rail model with an OCP of 122A on the 12V line and 55A on the 5V line. Regression: It doesn't matter whether the drive its APM value is set to disabled or 1 (maximum power saving). The operating system records no read/write activity in /proc/diskstats. The values there are identical (28 read, 0 write operations) as immediately after the modprobe operation. Can't test what happens when booting into the mainboard it's BIOS - to exclude any OS intervention - because the Super Micro X8SI6-F mainboard running firmware 06/27/12 has a bug that incorrectly reads a +74.0 C CPU sensor temperature as "High" in BIOS mode, and shuts down the power after 1 minute. What might be causing the drive read/write activity on all drives in the 15th minute after boot and how to prevent it from happening?

• Automator won't change finder item names of photoshop automation exports

  I made a folder action that monitors a folder and changes the name of anything put in it. Then I automate a photoshop action that exports images to the folder. for some reason I have to move the images out of the folder and then back in for it to change. is there a way to have it change the images as they're saved there? is this a bug or am i doing something wrong? it works fine if i just move the images in and out of the folder. and sometimes it will change just a couple of them, which makes me think it's just because they're coming in so fast that it glitches.

• Anyone had any issues getting a disk to start on a Walrus storage sytem?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to get a Eucalyptus system up and running and have managed to get the cloud controller and node controller running fine, with an instance running in the cloud system, but without any persistent storage. When I try and create a volume I get euca-create-volume -s 10 -z cluster1 VOLUME vol-5F5D0659 10 creating 2010-05-31T09:10:11.408Z but when I try and see the volume I get euca-describe-volumes VOLUME vol-5F5D0659 10 cluster1 failed 2010-05-31T09:10:11.408Z VOLUME vol-5FE9065E 10 cluster1 failed 2010-05-31T09:02:56.721Z I've dug all over the place, but can't seem to turn up a reason the creation would fail or where to start looking to see what the issue might be. Anyone have any ideas where to even start looking for the answer to this? Ta Peter.
