  Any suggestions on how to become a better Android programmer? I'm past intro tutorials, which mainly focus on how to use pieces of the SDK, but I still struggle to structure big Android apps. Obviously the best use of my time is continuing with my coding projects, but I'm wondering if I should be learning more about Android particulars, solidifying my somewhat shaky Java knowledge, going back to object-oriented fundamentals or patterns...? Pointers to resources (books, example apps, sites) you've found helpful would be great.

• XMPP and Android interaction

  I am currently finding about how to build a XMPP client application on android 2.0.I came across this link which somewhat talks about the same problem.I am a newbie to android dev and thus found the solution given there to be difficult to digest. The system currently has Active MQ as a JMS provider.My job is to fed the messages coming from JMS to the XMPP server and then develope XMPP client on android 2.0 which will listen and show notification to the events pushed by the server. I have following concerns(which might sound foolish) 1.How do I push the events from JMS to the XMPP server which will in turn push them on android? 2.Which XMPP server implementation I should use?I have 3 options * Openfire: Very mature (was a commercial product), but sounds like it's heavyweight, written in Java * Prosody: Lightweight and easy to use, written in Lua. Doesn't have PubSub module yet * Tigase: Also lightweight, written in Java, supports PubSub How do I test and setup these servers.Do I need PubSub funcationality for my app? 3.For XMPP client I came across Smack API given here which is updated like 2 years back.Can anyone please tell me how do I make use of it for Android 2.0.If possible can anyone please mail me latest working Smack jar files. • Getting started with zxing on android

  Hi I'm trying to add zxing to my project (add a button which calls the scanner upon press).   Hi, I am developing a walkie-talkie application for Android, and would like to know whether RTP and/or SCTP is natively supported in the latest version of android SDK. From whatever I have dug-up so far, the answer is no. It seems that support for SCTP is coming in JDK 7. But then, I am not sure how this will work with my android developemnt. • Android edtftpj/PRo SFTP heap worker problem

  Hi I am using edtftpj-pro3.1 trial copy in my android app to make SFTP connection with the server. After few connections with the server with 5-6 file transfers, my app is crashing with following exception. Is it causing the problem or what could be the problem?? I tried setParallelMode(false) in SSHFTPClient, but it is not working. • How to scrape a _private_ google group?

  Hi there, I'd like to scrape the discussion list of a private google group. It's a multi-page list and I might have to this later again so scripting sounds like the way to go. Since this is a private group, I need to login in my google account first. Unfortunately I can't manage to login using wget or ruby Net::HTTP. Surprisingly google groups is not accessible with the Client Login interface, so all the code samples are useless. My ruby script is embedded at the end of the post. The response to the authentication query is a 200-OK but no cookies in the response headers and the body contains the message "Your browser's cookie functionality is turned off. Please turn it on." I got the same output with wget. See the bash script at the end of this message. I don't know how to workaround this. am I missing something? Any idea? Thanks in advance.   Hi, I'm new at this (java and opengl) so please bear with me if the answer to the question is simple. :) I'm trying to get a camera preview screen with the ability to display 3d objects simultaneously. Having gone through the samples at the api demos, I thought combining the code for the the examples at the api demo would suffice. But somehow its not working. The forces me to shut down upon startup and the error is mentioned as null pointer exception. Could someone share with me where did I go wrong and how to proceed from there.   I can't seem to get my ImageView to display its source image in its original size. The ImageView looks like this: <ImageView android:id="@+id/Logo" android:src="@drawable/logo" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" > </ImageView> The source image is 140 pixels wide, yet on the Nexus One's screen, which is 480 pixels wide it uses up half of the width. Using absolute values in px or dp for the width and height changes nothing. The image also looks very antialiased from the upscaling. Why is this happening and how can I prevent it?

• Android AVD With GoogleApi, Not Getting Network Connection

  I am working on a Windows XP Machine. When running AVDs out of Eclipse, I am getting "No Network Connection" when I am plugged into my company's network and using an AVD that was built with the "Google APIs by Google Inc., Android API 7, revision 1". If I use this same AVD (Google API) and connect to the internet through a Verizon Wireless card, the AVD gets an Internet Connection. If I use an AVD built with "SDK Platform Android 2.1, API 7, revision 1", and connect through my company's network, the AVD gets an Internet Connection. Any ideas what might be blocking this? I am guessing it is something in my company's network, but why only with the AVD created with the Google API?

• Bluetooth connect to a RS232 adapter in android

  Hello All, I am trying to use the Bluetooth Chat sample API app that google provides to connect to a bluetooth RS232 adapter hooked up to another device. When I do a toString on the exception I get "Service discovery failed". My question is mostly what are the cases that would cause an IOException to get thrown in the connect method? I know those are in the source somewhere but I don't know exactly how the java layer that you write apps in and the C/C++ layer that contains the actual stacks interface. I know that it uses the bluez bluetooth stack which is written in C/C++ but not sure how that ties into the java layer which is what I would think is throwing the exception. Any help on pointing me to where I can try to dissect this issue would be incredible. Also just to note I am able to pair with the RS232 adapter just fine but I am never able to actually connect. • Google Chrome mouse wheel takes keyboard focus

  I recently switched the default browser on all my machines from Firefox to Google Chrome. In general I’m loving Chrome but there is one behaviour that is driving me nuts. Scrolling with the mouse wheel takes keyboard focus away from the document. Here’s what happens. I’ve just opened a page or switched to a new tab and the page has keyboard focus as I can use the keyboard up/down and PgUp/PgDn keys to scroll it; no problem there. But if I then use the wheel on my mouse to scroll the page, it loses the keyboard focus and no longer responds to up/down, PgUp/PgDn, or in fact any other keyboard keys. I have to click on the page background to restore the keyboard focus. This is a minor inconvenience for scrolling but where it really drives me nuts is in Google Reader and Gmail where I use keyboard shortcuts a lot. Here I find that I scroll the article or e-mail I’m reading with the mouse wheel then get no response when I press j/k to move to the next or previous article or e-mail. I am using Windows 7 and the Chrome dev channel (version 4.0.249.43).

• Small ProgressDialog "spinner" for android

  Hi, I've been able to use the standard "ProgressDialog" for android to show that an indeterminate task is running But I'd like to use the "smaller" progress dialog "spinner" that's used for indeterminate tasks in some of the standard Android applications like the android Market (there's a small spinning circle that's actually integrated into the application window (as opposed to floating on top of it). Does anyone know how to create the smaller progress dialog (or can someone point me in the right direction)? Thanks!

• Skype Raw API (NOT COM API) send message problem

  In converting this CONSOLE example to a full windows dialog implementation I have run into a very "simple problem". The handle I use is the wParam value from the Skype Reply message, as in the code. This is non zero, but I am not sure if there is a way to test it other than with SendMessage. The compiled app from this C++ code example (see zip download) does actually work so I am stumped. I do encode the message with UTF8, and I create an instance of the COPYDATASTRUCT in my app, populate it then call SendMessage() with the COPYDATASTRUCT pointer in lparam. Skype does not respond nor does it obey. Am I missing something obvious here?

  Hi all, i'm trying to use SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase( "/data/data/edwin11.myapp/databases/myapp.db", null, (SQLiteDatabase.CREATE_IF_NECESSARY | SQLiteDatabase.NO_LOCALIZED_COLLATORS)); to create/open a database instead of making use of the SQLiteOpenHelper (because i want to pass in the flag SQLiteDatabase.NO_LOCALIZED_COLLATORS. (Shouldn't that be taken care of by the SQLiteDatabase.CREATE_IF_NECESSARY flag that i passed in?) If creating the file manually is the way to go, is it just an empty file, or do i have to write something to it? Thanks and Regards.
