• Master-slave vs. peer-to-peer archictecture: benefits and problems

    - by Ashok_Ora
    Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Almost two decades ago, I was a member of a database development team that introduced adaptive locking. Locking, the most popular concurrency control technique in database systems, is pessimistic. Locking ensures that two or more conflicting operations on the same data item don’t “trample” on each other’s toes, resulting in data corruption. In a nutshell, here’s the issue we were trying to address. In everyday life, traffic lights serve the same purpose. They ensure that traffic flows smoothly and when everyone follows the rules, there are no accidents at intersections. As I mentioned earlier, the problem with typical locking protocols is that they are pessimistic. Regardless of whether there is another conflicting operation in the system or not, you have to hold a lock! Acquiring and releasing locks can be quite expensive, depending on how many objects the transaction touches. Every transaction has to pay this penalty. To use the earlier traffic light analogy, if you have ever waited at a red light in the middle of nowhere with no one on the road, wondering why you need to wait when there’s clearly no danger of a collision, you know what I mean. The adaptive locking scheme that we invented was able to minimize the number of locks that a transaction held, by detecting whether there were one or more transactions that needed conflicting eyou could get by without holding any lock at all. In many “well-behaved” workloads, there are few conflicts, so this optimization is a huge win. If, on the other hand, there are many concurrent, conflicting requests, the algorithm gracefully degrades to the “normal” behavior with minimal cost. We were able to reduce the number of lock requests per TPC-B transaction from 178 requests down to 2! Wow! This is a dramatic improvement in concurrency as well as transaction latency. The lesson from this exercise was that if you can identify the common scenario and optimize for that case so that only the uncommon scenarios are more expensive, you can make dramatic improvements in performance without sacrificing correctness. So how does this relate to the architecture and design of some of the modern NoSQL systems? NoSQL systems can be broadly classified as master-slave sharded, or peer-to-peer sharded systems. NoSQL systems with a peer-to-peer architecture have an interesting way of handling changes. Whenever an item is changed, the client (or an intermediary) propagates the changes synchronously or asynchronously to multiple copies (for availability) of the data. Since the change can be propagated asynchronously, during some interval in time, it will be the case that some copies have received the update, and others haven’t. What happens if someone tries to read the item during this interval? The client in a peer-to-peer system will fetch the same item from multiple copies and compare them to each other. If they’re all the same, then every copy that was queried has the same (and up-to-date) value of the data item, so all’s good. If not, then the system provides a mechanism to reconcile the discrepancy and to update stale copies. So what’s the problem with this? There are two major issues: First, IT’S HORRIBLY PESSIMISTIC because, in the common case, it is unlikely that the same data item will be updated and read from different locations at around the same time! For every read operation, you have to read from multiple copies. That’s a pretty expensive, especially if the data are stored in multiple geographically separate locations and network latencies are high. Second, if the copies are not all the same, the application has to reconcile the differences and propagate the correct value to the out-dated copies. This means that the application program has to handle discrepancies in the different versions of the data item and resolve the issue (which can further add to cost and operation latency). Resolving discrepancies is only one part of the problem. What if the same data item was updated independently on two different nodes (copies)? In that case, due to the asynchronous nature of change propagation, you might land up with different versions of the data item in different copies. In this case, the application program also has to resolve conflicts and then propagate the correct value to the copies that are out-dated or have incorrect versions. This can get really complicated. My hunch is that there are many peer-to-peer-based applications that don’t handle this correctly, and worse, don’t even know it. Imagine have 100s of millions of records in your database – how can you tell whether a particular data item is incorrect or out of date? And what price are you willing to pay for ensuring that the data can be trusted? Multiple network messages per read request? Discrepancy and conflict resolution logic in the application, and potentially, additional messages? All this overhead, when all you were trying to do was to read a data item. Wouldn’t it be simpler to avoid this problem in the first place? Master-slave architectures like the Oracle NoSQL Database handles this very elegantly. A change to a data item is always sent to the master copy. Consequently, the master copy always has the most current and authoritative version of the data item. The master is also responsible for propagating the change to the other copies (for availability and read scalability). Client drivers are aware of master copies and replicas, and client drivers are also aware of the “currency” of a replica. In other words, each NoSQL Database client knows how stale a replica is. This vastly simplifies the job of the application developer. If the application needs the most current version of the data item, the client driver will automatically route the request to the master copy. If the application is willing to tolerate some staleness of data (e.g. a version that is no more than 1 second out of date), the client can easily determine which replica (or set of replicas) can satisfy the request, and route the request to the most efficient copy. This results in a dramatic simplification in application logic and also minimizes network requests (the driver will only send the request to exactl the right replica, not many). So, back to my original point. A well designed and well architected system minimizes or eliminates unnecessary overhead and avoids pessimistic algorithms wherever possible in order to deliver a highly efficient and high performance system. If you’ve every programmed an Oracle NoSQL Database application, you’ll know the difference! /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0in; mso-para-margin-right:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0in; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}

  • Using IIS7 why are my PNGs being cached by the browser, but my JS and CSS files not?

    - by Craig Shearer
I am trying to sort out caching in IIS for my site. Basically, I want nothing cached, except for .png, .js, and .css files. At my site level, I opened the HTTP Reponse Headers and used the "Set Common Hedaers..." to set content to expire immediately. I have no Output Caching profiles set at any level in IIS. I clear my browser cache then try accessing my site. When my site requests a PNG file, I see responses like: Accept-Ranges bytes Age 0 Connection Keep-Alive Content-Type image/png Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 21:55:15 GMT Etag "83b7322de318cd1:0" Last-Modified Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:33:45 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By ASP.NET For JS and CSS files, I see responses like: Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 597 Content-Type text/css Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 21:55:15 GMT Etag "06e45ede15bca1:0" Last-Modified Mon, 02 Nov 2009 17:28:44 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 42060 Content-Type application/x-javascript Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 21:55:14 GMT Etag "2356302de318cd1:0" Last-Modified Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:33:45 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET So, why are my PNGs able to be cached, but JS and CSS files not? Then, I go into the Output Caching feature in IIS and set up profiles for .png, .css, and .js files. This updates the web.config file as follows: <caching> <profiles> <add extension=".png" policy="CacheUntilChange" kernelCachePolicy="DontCache" /> <add extension=".css" policy="CacheUntilChange" kernelCachePolicy="DontCache" /> <add extension=".js" policy="CacheUntilChange" kernelCachePolicy="DontCache" /> </profiles> </caching> I do a "precautionary" IISReset then try accessing my site again. For PNG files, I see the following response: Accept-Ranges bytes Age 0 Connection Keep-Alive Content-Length 3833 Content-Type image/png Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:02:30 GMT Etag "0548c9e2c5dc81:0" Last-Modified Tue, 22 Jan 2008 19:26:00 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By ASP.NET For CSS and JS files, I see the following responses: Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache,no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 2680 Content-Type application/x-javascript Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:02:29 GMT Etag "0f743af9015c81:0" Last-Modified Tue, 23 Oct 2007 16:20:54 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache,no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 3831 Content-Type text/css Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:02:29 GMT Etag "c3f42d2de318cd1:0" Last-Modified Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:33:45 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET What am I doing wrong? Have I completely misunderstood the features of IIS, or is there a bug. Most importantly, how do I achieve what I want - that is get the browser to cache only PNG, JS and CSS files?

  • How to set the base path in IIS 7 hosting a WCF application?

    - by curiouscoder
I've been fighting my way through the process of migrating a (previously self-hosted) WCF application to IIS7 (I've never used IIS before and I realise that this is a very simplistic question but I failed to google/SO the answer so far). My service is hosted at http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/SampleWebsite/Service.svc but when I access it with ?wsdl all the references that should read http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ are actually set to the window machine's local network name (i.e. http://localpc3/). I've tried using the WCF tool to add the external IP address to the base address section under the service I'm configuring as well as a number of setting inside IIS but I can't seem to track down the correct place. Where do I set this? IIS manager, web.config, somewhere else?

  • How can I build against Microsoft.Web.Administration (IIS 7.x) on a Windows 2003 build machine?

    - by JohnL
Hi, I am writing a C# config app for (amongst other things) setting up websites. It's only required to support IIS 7.x (Windows 2008 / 2008 R2), and requiring the compatibility pack is a no-no, so I figured I'd just use the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace. However, the only place I can find the assembly that contains this namespace (Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll) is from the IIS 7.x installation folder, and our main build machines are Windows 2003 and so cannot install IIS 7.x. One option is to mandate a 2008 build machine but we currently only have one so that's not ideal. We've already ruled out appcmd.exe. The other option is to make a package consisting of the dlls necessary to build against Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll. Has anyone tried that? Is there such a package already in existence, hidden somewhere on the MS download site? Thanks in advance.

  • How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

    - by Andy
Hi, I am doing performance tweaking of a simple app that uses MVC on IIS 7.5. I have a StopWatch starting up in Application_BeginRequest and I take a snapshot at Controller.OnActionExecuting. So I measure the time spend in the entire IIS pipeline: from request receipt to the moment execution finally gets to my controller. I obtain 700 microseconds on my 3GHz quad-core (project compiled Release x64), and I wonder where the bottleneck is, especially hearing some people say that one can get up to 8000 page loads per second with MVC. How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

  • Unable to debug ASP.NET Applicatation using VS 2008 on IIS 7 running on Windows 7 x64

    - by rsteckly
Hi, I've been trying to debug an existing asp.net web application that requires me to debug against an IIS website. I've installed the app and can navigate to it on localhost. However, when I start VS 2008 as an Administrator and try to debug it, I get a message "Unable to start debugging on the web server. The IIS worker process for the launched URL is not currently running." I've looked through some of the help file contents and can't seem to figure out what is going on. Clearly, the IIS worker process IS running, since I can navigate to the site locally without VS open. My boss has suggested that it might be because my OS is 64 bit. Any ideas?

  • How to use XPath to filter elements by TextContent? get parent by axis?

    - by Michael Mao
Hi all: I've found a similar question on SO, however, that seems not exactly what I wanna achieve: Say, this is a sample XML file: <root>

</root> If I wanna get a "filtered" subset of the item elements from this XML, how could I use an XPath expression to directly address that? XPathExpression expr = xpath.compile("/root/item/category/text()"); I now know this would evaluate to be the collection of all the TextContent from the categories, however, that means I have to use a collection to store the values, then iterate, then go back to grab other related info such as the item id again. Another question is : how could I refer to the parent node properly? Say, this xpath expression would get me the collection of all the id nodes, right? But what I want is the collection of item nodes: XPathExpression expr = xpath.compile("/root/item/id[@isInStock='true']"); I know I should use the "parent" axis to refer to that, but I just cannot make it right... Is there a better way of doing this sort of thing? Learning the w3cschools tutorials now... Sorry I am new to XPath in Java, and thanks a lot in advance.

  • Add data to Django form class using modelformset_factory

    - by dean
I have a problem where I need to display a lot of forms for detail data for a hierarchical data set. I want to display some relational fields as labels for the forms and I'm struggling with a way to do this in a more robust way. Here is the code... class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=160) class Item(models.Model): category = models.ForeignKey('Category') name = models.CharField(max_length=160) weight = models.IntegerField(default=0) class Meta: ordering = ('category','weight','name') class BudgetValue(models.Model): value = models.IntegerField() plan = models.ForeignKey('Plan') item = models.ForeignKey('Item') I use the modelformset_factory to create a formset of budgetvalue forms for a particular plan. What I'd like is item name and category name for each BudgetValue. When I iterate through the forms each one will be labeled properly. class BudgetValueForm(forms.ModelForm): item = forms.ModelChoiceField(queryset=Item.objects.all(),widget=forms.HiddenInput()) plan = forms.ModelChoiceField(queryset=Plan.objects.all(),widget=forms.HiddenInput()) category = "" < assign dynamically on form creation > item = "" < assign dynamically on form creation > class Meta: model = BudgetValue fields = ('item','plan','value') What I started out with is just creating a dictionary of budgetvalue.item.category.name, budgetvalue.item.name, and the form for each budget value. This gets passed to the template and I render it as I intended. I'm assuming that the ordering of the forms in the formset and the querset used to genererate the formset keep the budgetvalues in the same order and the dictionary is created correctly. That is the budgetvalue.item.name is associated with the correct form. This scares me and I'm thinking there has to be a better way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Beyond the @Produces annotation, how does Jersey (JAX-RS) know to treat a POJO as a specific mime ty

    - by hal10001
I see a lot of examples for Jersey that look something like this: public class ItemResource { @GET @Path("/items") @Produces({"text/xml", "application/json"}) public List
getItems() { List
items = new ArrayList
(); Item item = new Item(); item.setItemName("My Item Name!"); items.add(item); return items; } } But then I have trouble dissecting Item, and how Jersey knows how to translate an Item to either XML or JSON. I've seen very basic examples that just return a String of constructed HTML or XML, which makes more sense to me, but I'm missing the next step. I looked at the samples, and one of them stood out (the json-from-jaxb sample), since the object was marked with these types of annotations: @XmlAccessorType(XmlAccessType.FIELD) @XmlType(name = "", propOrder = { "flight" }) @XmlRootElement(name = "flights") I'm looking for tutorials that cover this "translation" step-by-step, or an explanation here of how to translate a POJO to output as a specific mime type. Thanks!

  • Updating Multiple Drop-Down Lists in AjaxTags

    - by Berin
I'm using AjaxTags as a defined set of JSP tags to facilitate AJAX programming, saving me from some heavy lifting. The project is in trial mode, so I may not adopt the technology and write my own solution. Here's what I'm running into (code abbreviated) I have a drop-down list that defines an item that populates numerous other drop-down lists. ... <c:forEach items="${list1}" var="item"> ${item} </c:forEach> ... <ajax:select source="item1" target="item2" baseUrl="${pageContext.request.contextPath}/doAction.view" parameters="action1 = {item}" /> <ajax:select source="item1" target="item3" baseUrl="${pageContext.request.contextPath}/doAction.view" parameters="action2 = {item}" /> The code above works with my back-end, initiating a call to a servlet class that is listening for calls, parses the parameter and takes action based upon the name of the parameter passed. The problem comes from adding the second ajax:select tag above. An action in drop-down "item 1" only causes "item 3" to be populated with new values. What I want is for an action in "item 1" to populate "item 2" and "item 3" (and 4, 5, 6...). Has anyone else used AjaxTags (ajaxtags.sourceforge.net) and solved a similar solution? Environment Details: Tomcat 5.5.27, Spring 2.0.8, Struts 1.2.9, Java 6

  • Select Table Rows by Grouping them Adjacent to each Other using XPath

    - by Adnan Yaseen
I am not clear how to express my problem correctly in the question so forgive me if I am not able to properly convey my problem. I have following data.
Random Value 1

1

2

3

Random Value 2

4

5

6

Random Value 3

7

8

9
What I want to acheive is that I want to select the with class header. I have achieved this by using the following line of code, HtmlNodeCollection headerNodes = doc.DocumentNode.SelectNodes("//tr[@class='header']"); Now I have all the header rows in the collection. Now I loop through all the header nodes and I want to get the table rows which are adjacent to the respective header rows. foreach (HtmlNode node in headerNodes) { HtmlNodeCollection itemNodes = ??? } My question is that what I should write here so that for header row with text "Random Value 1" I get the item rows 1,2 and 3. Similarly for header row with text "Random Value 2" I get the item row 4,5 and 6 and so on.

  • Serializing QGraphicsScene contents

    - by Rob
I am using the Qt QGraphicsScene class, adding pre-defined items such as QGraphicsRectItem, QGraphicsLineItem, etc. and I want to serialize the scene contents to disk. However, the base QGraphicsItem class (that the other items I use derive from) doesn't support serialization so I need to roll my own code. The problem is that all access to these objects is via a base QGraphicsItem pointer, so the serialization code I have is horrible: QGraphicsScene* scene = new QGraphicsScene; scene->addRect(QRectF(0, 0, 100, 100)); scene->addLine(QLineF(0, 0, 100, 100)); ... QList<QGraphicsItem*> list = scene->items(); foreach (QGraphicsItem* item, items) { if (item->type() == QGraphicsRectItem::Type) { QGraphicsRectItem* rect = qgraphicsitem_cast<QGraphicsRectItem*>(item); // Access QGraphicsRectItem members here } else if (item->type() == QGraphicsLineItem::Type) { QGraphicsLineItem* line = qgraphicsitem_cast<QGraphicsLineItem*>(item); // Access QGraphicsLineItem members here } ... } This is not good code IMHO. So, instead I could create an ABC class like this: class Item { public: virtual void serialize(QDataStream& strm, int version) = 0; }; class Rect : public QGraphicsRectItem, public Item { public: void serialize(QDataStream& strm, int version) { // Serialize this object } ... }; I can then add Rect objects using QGraphicsScene::addItem(new Rect(,,,)); But this doesn't really help me as the following will crash: QList<QGraphicsItem*> list = scene->items(); foreach (QGraphicsItem* item, items) { Item* myitem = reinterpret_class<Item*>(item); myitem->serialize(...) // FAIL } Any way I can make this work?

  • EF 4.0 Code only assocation from abstract to derived

    - by Jeroen
Using EF 4.0 Code only i want to make an assocation between an abstract and normal class. I have class 'Item', 'ContentBase' and 'Test'. 'ContentBase' is abstract and 'Test' derives from it. 'ContentBase' has a property 'Item' that links to an instance of 'Item'. So that 'Test.Item' or any class that derives from 'ContentBase' has an 'Item' navigation property. In my DB every record for Test has a matching record for Item. public class Item { public int Id { get; set;} } public abstract class ContentBase { public int ContentId { get; set;} public int Id { get; set;} public Item Item { get; set;} } public class Test : ContentBase { public string Name { get; set;} } now some init code public void SomeInitFunction() { var itemConfig = new EntityConfiguration
(); itemConfig.HasKey(p => p.Id); itemConfig.Property(p => p.Id).IsIdentity(); this.ContextBuilder.Configurations.Add(itemConfig); var testConfig = new EntityConfiguration<Test>(); testConfig.HasKey(p => p.ContentId); testConfig.Property(p => p.ContentId).IsIdentity(); // the problem testConfig.Relationship(p => p.Item).HasConstraint((p, q) => p.Id == q.Id); this.ContextBuilder.Configurations.Add(testConfig); } This gives an error: A key is registered for the derived type 'Test'. Keys must be registered for the root type 'ContentBase'. anyway i try i get an error. What am i a doing wrong?

  • IIS: 404 error on every file in a virtual directory.

    - by Scott Chamberlain
I am trying to write my first WCF service for IIS 6.0. I followed the instructions on MSDN. I created the virtual directory, I can browse the directory fine but anything I click (even a sub-folder in that folder) gives me a 404 error. What am I missing that I can not access any files or folders? Any logs or whatnot you need just tell me where to find them in the comments and I will post them. I have a server running Windows 2003 64-bit, that runs IIS in 32-bit mode. I have a COM object that was registered using the following command: C:\WINDOWS\microsoft.net\Framework\v2.0.50727>regasm D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll /tlb:MyTLB.tlb /codebase When I create the object via ASP I get: Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 8000ffff' Server.CreateObject Failed /includes/a_URLFilter.asp, line 19 8000ffff When I create the object in a vbs script and use the 32-bit version of cscript (in \Windows\syswow64) it works fine. I've checked permissions on the DLL, and the IUSR has Read/Execute. Even if I add the IUSR to the Administrators group, I get the same error. This is the log from ProcessMonitor filtering for the path of my dll (annotated with my actions): [Stop IIS] 1:56:30.0891918 PM w3wp.exe 4088 CloseFile D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS [Start IIS] [Refresh ASP page that uses DLL] 1:56:42.7825154 PM w3wp.exe 2196 QueryOpen D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS CreationTime: 8/19/2009 1:11:17 PM, LastAccessTime: 8/19/2009 1:30:26 PM, LastWriteTime: 8/18/2009 12:09:33 PM, ChangeTime: 8/19/2009 1:22:02 PM, AllocationSize: 20,480, EndOfFile: 20,480, FileAttributes: A 1:56:42.7825972 PM w3wp.exe 2196 QueryOpen D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS CreationTime: 8/19/2009 1:11:17 PM, LastAccessTime: 8/19/2009 1:30:26 PM, LastWriteTime: 8/18/2009 12:09:33 PM, ChangeTime: 8/19/2009 1:22:02 PM, AllocationSize: 20,480, EndOfFile: 20,480, FileAttributes: A 1:56:42.7826961 PM w3wp.exe 2196 CreateFile D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS Desired Access: Generic Read, Disposition: Open, Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory File, Attributes: N, ShareMode: Read, Delete, AllocationSize: n/a, Impersonating: SERVER2\IUSR_SERVER2, OpenResult: Opened 1:56:42.7827194 PM w3wp.exe 2196 CreateFileMapping D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS SyncType: SyncTypeCreateSection, PageProtection: 1:56:42.7827546 PM w3wp.exe 2196 CreateFileMapping D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS SyncType: SyncTypeOther 1:56:42.7829130 PM w3wp.exe 2196 Load Image D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS Image Base: 0x6350000, Image Size: 0x8000 1:56:42.7830590 PM w3wp.exe 2196 Load Image D:\Path\To\MyDll.dll SUCCESS Image Base: 0x6360000, Image Size: 0x8000 1:56:42.7838855 PM w3wp.exe 2196 CreateFile D:\Webspace\SecurityDll\bin SUCCESS Desired Access: Read Data/List Directory, Synchronize, Disposition: Open, Options: Directory, Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Attributes: n/a, ShareMode: Read, Write, Delete, AllocationSize: n/a, Impersonating: SERVER2\IUSR_SERVER2, OpenResult: Opened 1:56:42.7839081 PM w3wp.exe 2196 QueryDirectory D:\Path\To\MyDll.INI NO SUCH FILE Filter: SecurityDll.INI 1:56:42.7839281 PM w3wp.exe 2196 CloseFile D:\Webspace\SecurityDll\bin SUCCESS [Refresh ASP page that uses DLL] [Refresh ASP page that uses DLL] [Refresh ASP page that uses DLL] This dll works fine on other servers, running 32-bit windows. • How do I get the latest FastCGI and PHP versions to peacefully coexist on IIS 6?

    - by BHelman
I have been going round and round trying to get any sort of PHP running on IIS 6. I somehow managed to successfully get version 5.1.4 running using the php5isapi.dll file. However, I want to upgrade a website to begin using a Content Management System. I have never dug into CMS before so I'm open to programs that are easy to use. I am currently looking into TomatoCMS and ImpressCMS - but that's beside the point. I have never done an installation with PHP before and I think I'm getting familiar with how it works. However the current situation is this. Microsoft's Web Platform Installer 2.0 installed FastCGI for me. I need to upgrade to PHP 5.3.1 for a CMS system. So I downloaded the Windows installer and let it go at it. After consulting several other blog articles, I believe I know how it is supposed to work but I am currently not having luck. THE SETUP *.php is a registered extension in IIS 6 for all websites (on Win 2k3). The application that it calls is C:\Windows\system32\inetsvr\fcgiext.dll, like it should. The fcgiext.ini config has the proper lines: [Types] php=PHP [PHP] ext=C:\program files\PHP\php-cgi.exe And the php.ini file also has the correct configs. All extensions are disabled and I changed the correct things for FastCGI. And everything is registered correctly with the PATH variable. Everything is exactly how it should be. BUT when I launch the "info.php" page () on another computer, I get the following error: FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. Error Details: * Section [PHP] not found in config file. * Error Number: 1413 (0x80070585). * Error Description: Invalid index. HTTP Error 500 - Server Error. Internet Information Services (IIS) A quick Google search reveals that I have it all setup correctly as far as the INI's go and the mapping of the php extension. I am completely at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions? Although the server is hosting three small websites, I don't really care what I have to do to it to get it to work.

  • Can I monitor active user count on my iis sites?

    - by Dejan.S
We are having problems with performance on our server that host our websites that the processor gets upp to 90%. I would like to monitor the amount of users active on your sites that are published on the iis. My question, is this possible? is there any software for this? EDIT current (like this second) visitor count on all the active websites on our iis REASON FOR THIS if i can get the visitor amount on the days the CPU is not overloaded and and compare it to the days it is then i atleast know that this CAN be a reason why this is happening and i can take it from there. Otherwise i can focus on the code on the sites, or maybe google crawler is causing this, there are manythings that can cause this you know? for me this is just a simple way of troubleshooting.

  • Why is IIS 7.5 flushing file cache very often?

    - by Steffen
We're running a Win 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 for serving image files. It's only used for static content, and file caching has been set up to cache files for 10 minutes. However the IIS frequently completely flushes the cache (seen by using Perfmon) It's not application pool recycling, it's not because the TTL has expired, so now I'm at a loss :-( I've included a screenshot of the perfmon graph where you can clearly see the issue. Is there anywhere I can see WHY it's doing these flushes ? (Note: I'm aware I could maybe detect it by attaching a debugger to the process, but that's not an option because it's a production server, and it cannot handle the slowdown a debugger would cause)

  • Can installing URL Rewrite 2.0 on production IIS 7.5 have a negative impact?

    - by Olaf
We have a Windows 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 and a lot of customer websites. Being no sys-admin but a developer, I hate to touch that wonderfully running system. However, I'd like to update the IIS plugin URL Rewrite to version 2.0 via Web Platform Installer. I do not want to do anything that might compromise the server, hence the question: can I expect it to work with at least a 99% chance? I did not find any bug reports or reviews on the web, so I'd like to hear an expert on that.

  • Will restarting the W3SVC Web Publishing Service, also restart the app pool in IIS?

    - by Mark Rogers
Background: I'm trying to stop and start IIS on a windows 7 build box, in order to run acceptance tests. But from what I have read, most of the remote web management features have been disabled by Microsoft in a retarted attempt to sell more Windows Server 2008 licenses. Still for some reason they didn't disable the least user-friendly ways of controlling IIS remotely, but they are all a total pain. What I can do easily is remotely stop and start the WWW service from a msbuild task. But I want to be sure that this also restarts the app pool, so that when I copy in new web files the web server there will be serving the most recent version of the website. Question: If I restart the W3SVC windows service, will that also restart the app pool?

  • Setting up a copy of a site with IIS 7?

    - by SJaguar13
I have a site running on IIS with a dyndns.org domain that points to the IP of the Windows 2008 machine hosting it. I need a copy of that site for development purposes. I set up another folder with all the files, and create a new site in IIS. I don't really have a domain for it, so I was just going to use the IP address. When I go to localhost, 127.0.0.1, or the internal IP, I get bad hostname. If I use the IP address on port 80 (the same as the real version of the site), I get 404 not found. If I use a different port so I don't have them both on the same IP with the same port, I get connection timed out. How do I go about setting this up?

  • Subdomain on a separate server (Windows/IIS) won't load default web site?

    - by DOTang
I've got a domain hosted under godaddy.com. I set it up so that subdomain.mysite.com points to a different server which uses Windows/IIS (say for example ip 1.1.1.1). When I go to the subdomain I get no errors, but no webpage loads. In IIS under the default website I added a bindings for subdomain.mysite.com with the ip of 1.1.1.1, but still nothing loads, just a totally blank page. I know for sure the subdomain host is working correctly because when I ping my subdomain, the correct IP shows. What am I missing to get this working?

  • How do I stop my IIS App Pool making a request to wpad.mydomain.com?

    - by Programming Hero
As part of some performance troubleshooting, I've monitored the slow startup of a "cold" App Pool (one without an active worker process) in IIS. When using a built-in account, the App Pool starts in sub-second time. When using a custom local account the App Pool takes 30+ seconds to start processing requests. The service appears to be making requests to wpad.mydomain.com, an address it does not have access to, which causes it to wait 30 seconds for a response before eventually timing out. As a workaround, I've added the hostname to the server's hosts file, to direct the traffic to the local machine, which returns much faster (1-2 seconds). What do I need to do to stop IIS making this request when this identity is used for the App Pool?
