• Bug once in a while,but high priority

  I am working on a CNC (computer numerical control) project which cuts shapes into metal with help of laser. Now my problem is once in a while (1-2 times in 20 odd days) the cutting goes wrong or not according to what is set. But this causes loss so the client is not very happy about it. I tried to find out the the cause of it by Including log files Debugging Repeating the same environment. But it wont repeat. A pause and continue operation will again make it to run smoothly with the bug reappearing. How do I tackle this issue? Should I state it as a Hardware Problem?

• OOP private method parameters coding style

  After coding for many years as a solo programmer, I have come to feel that most of the time there are many benefits to write private member functions with all of the used member variables included in the parameter list, especially development stage. This allow me to check at one look what member variables are used and also allow me to supply other values for tests and debugging. Also, a change in code by removing a particular member variable can break many functions. In this case however, the private function remains isolated am I can still call it using other values without fixing the function. Is this a bad idea afterall, especially in a team environment? Is it like redundant or confusing, or are there better ways?

• Level and Player objects - which should contain which?

  I've been working on a several simple games, and I've always come to a decision point where I have to choose whether to have the Level object as an attribute of the Player class or the Player as an attribute of the Level class. I can see arguments for both: The Level should contain the player because it also contains every other entity. In fact it just makes sense this way: "John is in the room." It makes it a bit more difficult to move the player to a new level, however, because then each level has to pass its player object to an upcoming level. On the other hand, it makes programming sense to me to leave the player as the top-level object that is persistent between levels, and the environment changes because the player decides to change his level and location. It becomes very easy to change levels, because all I have to do is replace the level variable on the player. What's the most common practice here? Or better yet, is there a "right" way to architecture this relationship?

• RTOS experience

  Hi, I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction. • MAAS fails to Commission nodes

  I'm evaluating MaaS/Juju. I followed instructions in this link http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html to setup MaaS. I'm running this in Oracle VirtualBox environment so Power options are not configured for the VMs. PXE booting VM works fine. The node shuts down itself and registers with MaaS in Declared state. Issues: a) When I Commission the VM (which is in the Declared state), first it gets IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up errors. (See link below for a screenshot). b) Fails to mount the boot device and drops into initramfs prompt. • Why doesn't Microsoft support virtualizing a Server OS on Windows 7?

  Microsoft doesn't support any server operating systems in Windows Virtual PC. Virtual Server 2005 doesn't run on Windows 7. Hyper-V is great, but I don't want to run Server 2008 as my main OS, and I love having Windows 7 run on the bare metal. I don't want to mess around with a dual boot. My only option to continue developing in Windows 7 with a virtual server environment on hand is VMWare or VirtualBox. Other members in my team use Hyper-V, and VHDs are common. I'd prefer to be able to use their VHDs, so that leaves me VirtualBox. Does anyone know if Microsoft is planning on bringing server virtualization back to the workstation?

• How to make custom libraries accessible?

  I am trying to compile and install every custom module under it's own designated folder. (ex: /myApps/myLinux/compiled_app) I had luck with python so far, where my python is compiled from source and lives in: /myApps/myLinux/python2.5 and "python2.5" - /myApps/myLinux/python2.5.6-gcc463 so I can access this python through a wrapper script that sets the right environment. The question is recently I had to compile and add something called gperf3.0.4. So now it lives: /myApps/myLinux/gperf3.0 and "gperf3.0" - /myApps/myLinux/gperf3.0.4-gcc463 The question is: How will I point to this lib if some other app needs to access it? Is it done through the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable? Thanks.

• Upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04

  On doing an upgrade from 10.10. to 11.04 using Upgrade Manager everything works fine. But on installing a software that bundle its owns runtime environment( loader and system files) and installs the custom runtime ( basically loader) in the location where the native one resides, the above mentioned upgrade fails.(Upgrade starts and after sometime it encounters an error and aborts.) Basically , /usr/bin/dpkg throws up an error on being unable to locate a system shared library in the aforesaid third party runtime folder ( /usr/bin/dpkg should not search the third party runtime folder.Instead it should look at the system default folder) But if we remove the installed third party loader from the default system location /lib and place it in some other location , the upgrade problem goes away. This makes me believe /usr/bin/dpkg invokes(loads) the wrong loader and as such goes looking for the dependent libraries in the third party folder. Can someone take a look at this ? is there some bug with dpkg

• Ubuntu install and boot failure 11.10

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my machine alongside Vista, and upgraded to 12.4. I decided I liked 11.10 better, so I tried to install that again as my only OS, except I increased the size of the swap file partition to 2 gigs. It boots up fine off the CD, but when I install, it gives me a non-specific error, and returns me to the desktop. When attempting to boot off the hard drive, I get a black screen with a blinking underscore that starts in the corner, drops a couple spaces, and stays there. I managed to install 9.04, and am currently using that. The computer is a little outdated, but was fired up for the very first time last week, so the hard drive is in new condition and the CD rom drive is fine too. Running a 3GHzX2 processor. I ran a memory test, which came back fine, and being new to the linux environment, I've been scratching my head for the last couple days. How can I fix this?

• Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

  Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

  During a recent project, while waiting for our Development Database to be provisioned on the clients corporate SQL Server Environment (these things can sometimes take weeks or months to be setup), we began our initial development against a local instance on SQL Server Express, just as an interim measure until the Development database was live.  This was going just fine, until we found that we needed to do some profiling to understand a problem we were having with the performance of our ORM generated Data Access Layer.  The full version of SQL Server Management Studio includes a profiler, that we could use to help with this kind of problem, however the Express version does not, so I was really pleased to find that there is a freely available Profiler for SQL Server Express imaginatively titled ‘SQL Server Express Profiler’, and it worked great for us.  http://sites.google.com/site/sqlprofiler/

• Private Cloud: Putting some method behind the madness

  Finally, I decided to join the blogging community. And what could be a better time to start than the week after OpenWorld 2012. 50K+ attendees, demonstrations, speaker sessions and a whole lot of buzz on Oracle Cloud..It was raining clouds in this year's Openworld. I am not here to write about Oracle's cloud strategy in general, but on Enterprise Manager's cloud management capabilities. This year's Openworld was the first after we announced the 12c Cloud Control and we were happy to share the stage with quite a few early adopters. Stay tuned for videos from our customers and partners, I will post them as they get published. I met a number of platform administrators in Oracle-DBAs, Middleware Admins, SOA Admins...The cloud has affected them all, at least to the point where it beckoned more than just curiosity..Most IT infrastructure are already heavily virtualized (on VMWare and on others including Oracle VM), and some would claim they are already on “cloud” (at least their Sysadmins told them so). But none of them were confident of the benefits because their pain points continued to grow.. Isn't cloud supposed to ease those? Instead, they were chasing hundreds of databases running on hundreds of VMs, often with as much certainty propounded by Heisenberg. What happened to the age-old IT discipline around administration, compliance, configuration management? VMs are great for what they are. I personally think they have opened the doors to new approaches in which an application stack gets provisioned and updated. In fact, Enterprise Manager 12c is possibly the only tool out there that can provision full-fledged application as VM Assemblies. In this year's Openworld, customers talked on how they provisioned RAC and Siebel assemblies, which as the techies out there know, are not trivial (hearing provisioning time for Siebel down from weeks to hours was gratifying indeed). However, I do have an issue with a "one-size fits all" approach to cloud. In a week's span, I met several personas: Project owners requiring an EC2 like VM instance for their projects Admins needing the same for Sparc-Solaris. DBAs requiring dedicated databases for new projects APEX Developers needing just a ready-to-consume schema as a service Java Developers looking for a runtime platform QA engineers needing a fast clone of their production environment If you drill down further, you will end up peeling more layers of the details. For example, the requirements for Load testing and Functional testing are very different. For Load testing the test environment should ideally be the same as the production. You shouldn't run production on Exadata and load test on a VM; they will just not be good representations of one another. For Functional testing it does not possibly matter. DBAs seem to be at the worst affected of the lot. It seems they have been asked to choose between agile provisioning and  faster runtime performance. And in some cases, it is really a Hobson's choice, because their infrastructure provider made no distinction between the OLTP application and the Virtual desktop! Sad indeed. When one looks at the portfolio of services that we already offer (vanilla IaaS, VM Assembly based PaaS, DBaaS) or have announced (Java PaaS, Instant Cloning, Schema-aaS), one can possibly think that we are trying to be the "renaissance man" ! Well I would have possibly digested that had it not been for the various personas that I described above. Getting the use cases right is very important for an application such as cloud management. We iterate and iterate over these over and over again and re-validate them in CABs (Customer Advisory Boards). We consider over the major aspects of tenancy: service placement, resource isolation (can a tenant execute an expensive SQL and run away with all the resources), quota and security. We, in Engineering, keep reminding ourselves that we are dealing with enterprise clouds. We owe it to our customer base ! In the coming posts, I will drill down more into each of the services. • What is the situation about OpenGL under Ubuntu Unity and Gnome3?

  In a GNU/linux distribution is usually installed Xorg as main graphical server, it operates with a client-server logic, a special windows is designate as desktop environment and this special windows can handle all the eyecandy stuff like decorations, icons and effects. The problem is that the latest UI heavily relies on hardware acceleration, Unity is an overlay on Compiz and the Gnome-shell also require an active driver for the GPU to work well: the problem is: on the same OS I can find multiple implementations of OpenGL who is handling my OpenGL buffer? how the OpenGL buffer is managed compared to the other windows? how can I be sure that my OpenGL implementation is glued to the hardware and is not related to the client-server logic of Xorg? For example I have tried the clutter library and I have only experienced problems under both Unity and GTK/Gnome, no problem under other OS.

• I Need a recommendation for a CMS application with ECommerce

  Does anyone have any recommendation for an open source solution for a robust CMS application that has a fully featured ECommerce module? I have been looking into Drupal with Ubercart -- but it looks like Ubercart is not fully up to speed with Drupal 7, and the other modules for Ecommerce don't look as robust. The CMS system should support CMIS as both client and server, and be able to run in a cloud computing environment. The system could be written in any standard web programming language, although Java would be my preference. I'm posting this question here because it seems that all CMS systems provide ECommerce as an afterthought, rather than a core feature.

• How do I access a mounted Windows share from the command line?

  Hello all, I use Places > Connect to Server... to connect to a Windows share in my work environment (requires Kerberos authentication). When I do so, I can access the Windows share via Nautilus, but I can't figure out how to access the share from the command line without using smbclient. For example, the share isn't mounted under /mnt or /media. I also looked into ~/.gvfs but that's empty as well. Is it possible to access the mounted Windows share from the command line without using smbclient?

• How to point DNS records to Amazon AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  I just created a new environment with AWS and uploaded a .zip file into elastic beanstalk. I used to have a friend's server host my site instead of GoDaddy so I changed my custom DNS name servers from pointing to my friend's server to GoDaddy's. AWS told me that I need I need to add a CNAME record on GoDaddy and I did. The alias is lance and the host is lance-env.elasticbeanstalk.com. I know that this change can take 24-48 hours to take effect but it's been a day already and when I go to my site, a default page from GoDaddy appears. I'm very new to AWS and would just like to find a way for AWS to host my site other than using Route53.

• What are the basic skills a BEGINNING JavaScript programmer should have?

  In NYC, we are working on creating a collaborative community programming environment and trying to segment out software engineers into differing buckets. At present, we are trying to define: Beginners Intermediates Advanced Experts (and/or Masters) Similar to an apprenticeship, you would need to demonstrate specific skills to achieve different levels. Right now, we have identified Beginner programming skills as: Object - method, attributes, inheritance Variable - math, string, array, boolean - all are objects Basic arithmetic functions - precedence of functions String manipulation Looping - flow control Conditionals - boolean algebra This is a first attempt, and it is a challenge since we know the natural tension between programming and software engineering. How would you create such a skills-based ranking for JavaScript in this manner? For example, what would be the Beginner Javascript skills that you would need to have to advance to the Intermediate Training? And so on.
