• Deleting certain files sits at "preparing to recycle" on Windows 7?

  We recently setup one of our users with a brand new Windows 7 computer, however she is unable to delete certain files. With some testing, I found I cannot move, rename, or view properties of these files either. When trying to delete the file, it just sits at the "Preparing to recycle" popup, however the "from" section says "Discovering items..." Clicking "More Details" on the popup shows me that it can't find the file name or where it's recycling from: Other notes... All the affected files are .pdf files that get created via a scanner. Other pdf files are fine. Opening the files works fine. I can open the file, Save As a new file, and delete the new one just fine Trying to delete the file via command prompt just sits there Rebooting the computer will let me manipulate the files like normal, however this user is responsible for scanning hundreds of documents a day and I'd rather not have to tell her to reboot her computer to delete files. • How to detect/list rogue computers connected to a WIFI network without access to the Wifi Router interface?

  This is what I believe to be an interesting challenge :) A relative (that leaves a bit too far to go there in person) is complaining that their WIFI/Internet network performance has gone down abysmally lately. She'd like to know if some of the neighbors are using her wifi network to access the internet but she's not too technically savvy. I know that the best way to prevent issues would be to change the Router password, but it's a bit of a PITA having to re-configure all wifi devices... and if the uninvited guest broke the password once, they can do it again... Her wifi router/internet connection is provided by the telco, and remotely managed so she can log-on to their telco account's page and remotely change the router's Wifi password, but doesn't have access to the router status page/config/etc unless she opts out of the telco's remote support and mainteinance service... So, how could she check if there are guests in the wifi with this restrictions and in the most "point and click way"? In this case I'd probably use nmap to look for other devices in the network, but I'm not sure if that's the easiest way to do it. I'm not a wifi expert, so I don't know if there are any wifi-scanning utils that can tell us who's talking to the router... Lastly, she's a Windows user as I guess that'll influence the choice of tools available Any suggestions more than welcome Regards!

• Need advice on which PCI SATA Controller Card to Purchase

  I have a major issue with the build of a machine I am trying to get up and running. My goal is to create a file server that will service the needs of my software development, personal media storage and streaming/media server needs, as well as provide a strong platform for backing up all this data in a routine, cron-job oriented German efficiency sort of way. The issue is a simple one - all my drives are SATA drives and my motherboard controller only contains 4 ports. Solving the issue has proven to be an unmitigated nightmare. I would like advice on the purchase of the following: 4 Port internal SATA / 2 Port external eSATA PCI SATA Controller Card that has the following features and/or advantages: It must function. If I plug it in and attach drives, I expect my system to still make it to the Operating System login screen. It must function on CentOS, and I mean it must function WELL and with MINIMAL hassle. If hassle is unavoidable, there shall be CLEAR CUT and EASY TO FOLLOW instructions on how to install drivers and other supporting software. I do not need nor want fakeRAID - I will be setting up any RAID configurations from within the operating system. Now, if I am able to find such a mythical device, I would be eternally grateful to whomever would be able to point me in the right direction, a direction which I assume will be paved with yellow bricks. I am prepared to pay a considerable sum of money (as SATA controller cards go) and so paying anywhere between 60 to 120 dollars will not be an issue whatsoever. Does such a magical device exist? The following link shows an "example" of the type of thing I am looking for, however, I have no way of verifying that once I plug this baby in that my system will still continue to function once I've attached the drives, or that once I've made it to the OS, I will be able to install whatever drivers or software programs I need to make it work with relative ease.   When I am trying to connect to a MySQL database from a remote computer I get a prompt saying: Connection Failed: [HY000] [MySQL][ODBC 5.1 Driver]Can't Connect to MySQL server on 'XXX.XXX.XX.XX' (10060) I have created a user account in the MySQL Administrator and added a host to enable remote access, I have also made an exception for my Windows Firewall on port 3306 but the connection still fails. • Tracking IP through a socks5 proxy + RDP ?

  Hi all. We were having some issues at work until we found that we are being attacked almost every day. The attacker seems pretty smart - at first he was always using proxy to hide his IP. With scanning I found that they were socks 5 proxy. The last week we had 11 attacks and every time i found the ip i scanned it with nmap. I found that ALL of the 11 different ip addresses were RDP (port 3389 open, and accept rdp connections, checked by myself on ALL of them). So here follow the questions: 1. Can we trace his real IP back through a socks5 proxy ? 2. Can we trace him if he is using some RDP server to hide his ip ? Please do not answer like "Call the owner of the proxy server/RDP..." etc. we already tried it and it didn't work, that's why I am writing here. Thank you very much.

• Online computer not responding to pings

  I was doing a bit of scanning on my network lately, knew all the hostnames to each computer connected. But whilst pinging one of them ping returned Request timed out.. This is strange as I know the computer is online and that the computer responds correctly to pinging on a different (enterprise) network. Is there something on the computer, my network, or my computer that is bugging with this? - That's just a sub-question, I don't expect this to be the main answer. The real question: Why does this happen? Why does pinging the IP4 address not work? EDIT : Pinging the Hostname used to default to the IP4 address, but now it defaults to the IP6 address. Why does this happen? • High load on X3220 Quad Core Linux Apache server

  I'm seriously in need of help. My sites are now nearly impossible to use because of massive loads on my server. I'm already a month late on my mortgage and this really isn't helping my situation. I've been working on fixing this intermittent load problem for months (never this bad). I'm suspecting some kind of attack since I'm under DDOS attack a lot! I've been trying to figure out what is causing the load but I'm afraid I just don't have the experience or knowledge to understand all the data I've been looking at. I don't even know where to begin or how to test for the large array of attacks out there. Here's some data you might find useful... Server: Xeon X3220 Quad Core 2.4 GHz - Linux, FreeBSD 500 GB HD and 8 Gig of Ram. Runs Centos release 5.7 Server Version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.21 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_qos/9.74 Warning: All sites are softcore adult sites - mostly fantasy art like elves and amazons. 1) Sites may run fine for weeks or just days at less than 10 load then start jumping to 40-80 load - no idea why. Same sites, same mods, same amount of traffic - just WHAM! 2) I get an email almost every day that says: "Large Number of Failed Login Attempts from IP (different each time)". My webhost (who almost never helps me) told me it was a udp flood or something. 3) I've changed the port for MySQL from the default. If I ever put it back to the default - I get Loads of over 100 from what must be a constant mysql port flood. 4) I've reconfigured MYSQL. I've spent a couple weeks turning all the mods/plugins off, waiting a day and then turning them back on the next day or later if there isn't any change (there hasn't been). Components: Joomla 1.5.22, Jomsocial 2.0.5, Kunena 1/31/2011, HWDMediashare 11/22/2010 and JBolo Chat 2.7.3, Comet Chat or Envolve Chat. Page Compression is on, Cache is on 15 mins. • I cannot access Windows Update at all

  I have been unable to access the Windows update site for a couple of weeks now. I just get a message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and saying I have connection problems. Same thing is replicated with any other Microsoft site I try to access. The Automatic Updates also do not work. I can access every other wesbite I've surfed to. I've tried Googling the problem and based on what other site have suggested I have cleared my cache and temp files. I've scanning my hard drive with my antivirus in case I have a virus (nada). I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus (I run Zone Alarm). I've downloaded SpyBot and scanned my drive with that in case something was missed by Zone Alarm (again nada). Based on suggestions from the smart cookies on the Bad Science forum, I've used nslookup to check my translation isn't wonky (got all the info they said I should get). I've also tried navigating there directly using the IP address I was given (nope). I normally access the internet through a 3 mobile broadband connection, but have also tried connecting using a mate's wi-fi connection in case it was something on my mobile modem interferring. I run Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite as my anti-virus/ firewall. Any suggestions?

• Cannot send emails from outlook 2010 for an exchange account

  i have setup an exchange 2010 account on microsoft outlook 2010 and i can read my emails, but i am not able to send emails, when i create a new email and click send, the messages are not sent, they don't even get to the outbox folder. my guess is that the issue is not from exchange itself, becuase i can send emails with this exchange account with java code using smtp port 25 please advise how to fix this issue.

• Nginx: Maintenance page and localhost access

Just realized though that the maintenance block examples for nginx take the site down for everyone. How do you serve the maintenance page to visitors will still allowing localhost access. Should I just create a new server block listening on another port and deny all, allow 127.0.0.1?
