• How can I send raw postscript to a remote printer via CUPS?

  I have an ancient fax device with a printer interface that only accepts postscript level 1 documents formatted in a specific way. I only have access to this printer over the lpd:// protocol. I have some old documents from our previous system that work fine on our Unix machines, but they are altered somehow by CUPS when I use lp on our Linux system. The PDF files that end up in the print queue are significantly modified versions of the original, and although they still render in ghostscript, they don't do anything on the printer. I'm wondering if there's a way to tell CUPS "don't process this, just send it to the printer without modification", or whether there's a lpd client or procedure I could try?

• Ubuntu (desktop) server needed for school

  I need to build an ubuntu server for school, but I hate with a passion command line interfaces. I need a server with a desktop, like the current win server 2003 (which has crashed, ugh). This server needs to host the school lan domain, have an active directory, and handle the roaming profiles that the students and staff access through WinXP workstations. It also needs to work as a file server, maybe a print server. Can anyone advise me on how to create an Ubuntu server starting with Ubuntu Desktop edition? Much thanks if you respond... Dave.

• CutePDF in a domain environment

  We've recently migrated from a workstation to domain environment. Since the migration, we've been unable to install CutePDF (CuteWriter.exe) on our Win XP Pro boxes. No error, it just fails silently. We were not having having issue prior to the domain migration. CutePDF is a PDF creator that works by emulating a printer. The installer is supposed to create a regular Windows printer that users can select to print to when they want to make a PDF. We are using Group Policy, but I didn't really see any GPOs that would be affecting this. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this issue? I've tried installing as a domain admin and also as a local admin.

• Using Zentyal to control several servers

  I am currently in the process of creating a home server, made up of several virtual machines, each running a different type of server (i.e. a file server, a multimedia server, a firewall and a print server as of now). Today I discovered this new software, Zentyal, which looks interesting for system and network administration. However, I haven't understood one thing: can it be used only with its preconfigured packages or can it also be used to control other servers running other programs (in my case, the four virtual machines)?. Also, would you suggest to use such a program or do you think it's better to control each server on its own?

• Little server for a little network: Asus TS Mini + Windows Home Server or other?

  Hello, I'm building a little network with 4 computer a plotter, 3 printers an a HP Fax/Scan/Copy/Print machine. The network is connected to the web by a D-Link router/firewall. I would like to add little server to have file sharing (reachable via VPN from outside by a single user-road-warrior), automatic backups. I would like to avoid big electrics bills or, to say It in a green way, I would like to avoid useless power consumption made by a big server with hot-plug, Raid, double PSU because I don't need all this stuff. The server must work 24/7 and the budget is between 400€ and 1000€. I'm evaluating the Asus EEE Box (with XP), a TranquilPC (with XP), a FitPC (again with XP), and an Asus TS Mini (with Windows Home Server). I like the latter but since I'm Europe I don't know where I can buy It. Do you have any suggestion/experience to share with me about: which hardware do I have to buy ? which O.S. ?

• Which universal or driverless printing solution do you use/recommend?

  I'm in need of a driverless printing solution for Microsoft Terminal Services 2003/2008. This is mainly to support clients who are connected through broadband into our hosted servers. We were hoping that MSTS 2008 thinprint would be the answer but unfortunately it performs poorly in the print area. The files are too large. I found the following slightly outdated URL: http://www.msterminalservices.org/software/Printing/ This lists a number of products but I have no experience with any of them. I'd like a product that works/easy to install (as our clients are remote and not particularly tech savvy) and ideally I just pay for the server license and not every clients. • How do I populate multiple records of data into a PDF form like a mail-merge?

  I have Acrobat Pro, and I have a PDF with a form on it. Assuming the fields in the form correspond to a data source (like rows in an RDBMS table or xml file), I want to then print multiple copies of the PDF file, with each copy having the values of a different row in the data source. It is preferable to directly interface with an actual database, rather than having to save an XML file every time I do this. If this involves programming that's cool too, I only posted here because the question didn't seem appropriate for StackOverflow. Thanks!

• How to find malicious IPs?

  Cacti shows irregular and pretty steady high bandwidth to my server (40x the normal) so I guess the server is udnder some sort of DDoS attack. The incoming bandwidth has not paralyzed my server, but of course consuming the bandwidth and affects performance so I am keen to figure out the possible culprits IPs add them to my deny list or otherwise counter them. When I run: netstat -ntu | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n I get a long list of IPs with up to 400 connections each. I checked the most numerous occurring IPs but they come from my CDN. So I am wondering what is the best way to help monitor the requests that each IP make in order to pinpoint the malicious ones. • I believe I need a wireless access point, but can I do it with a wifi router?

  My needs are simple, I think: I have a laptop upstairs with a usb wifi that I use to connect to my neighbor's wifi which I share (with their knowledge). I have a laser printer downstairs that my wife doesn't wants to stay down there (big, bulky and ugly), but that we both need to print stuff off. It has wired networking and I have wired hub and router down there. The usb wifi on the laptop has absolutley the best reception I've ever seen or heard of. I cannot get onto the neighbor's net with the thing downstairs though--sortof in the ground. What do I need downstairs to give printer access to my laptop wirelessly? One thing I can't do in this solution is have a computer on downstairs, so I would think that would eliminate a usb solution.

I could not find a direct way though. So I redirected the eval string to a temporary batch file and executed it.   I have a script that deletes files 7 days or older and then logs them to a folder. It logs and deletes everything correctly but when I open up the log file for viewing, its very sloppy. log=$HOME/Deleted/$(date) find $HOME/OldLogFiles/ -type f -mtime +7 -delete -print > "$log" The log file is difficult to read Example File Output: (when opened in notepad) /home/u0146121/OldLogFiles/file1.txt/home/u0146121/OldLogFiles/file2.txt/home/u0146121/OldLogFiles/file3.txt Is there anyway to log the file nicer and cleaner? Maybe with the Filename, date deleted, and how old it was? Any suggestions help!

• insert, delete etc. keys not working on Cherry Strait keyboard

  Hey folks, I got a Cherry Strait USB wired keyboard for xmas and I've been unable to get several keys working under Ubuntu 10.10 or Win XP. There are a few keys. including the Print Screen key, insert, end, delete, pg up, pg down and home. I've not been able to identify any others that aren't working. I'm not sure as to the best approach to determine what's wrong. Is there any way to confirm whether there is any output from the keyboard in response to pressing those keys, ideally in Ubuntu as that's where I spend most of my time so that I know if it's a fault with the device itself? (I've tried different USB ports and also hitting those keys whilst in the Keyboard Shortcuts app, no response to these keys)

• How do you create a SQL query in Excel 2007 with a dynamic date range?

  I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query. SELECT FloatTable.DateAndTime, TagTable.TagName FROM master.dbo.FloatTable FloatTable, master.dbo.TagTable TagTable WHERE FloatTable.TagIndex = TagTable.TagIndex AND ((FloatTable.DateAndTime={ts '2012-06-01 00:00:00'})) Any assistance would be much appreciated. • Folder is not accessable, owner is not changeable. What should I do?

  I'm facing currently a problem with a folder in windows 7, that is not accessable. Such a problem I had treated often in the last years on several pc's. But today the problem seems harder than the last times. In the past I get to grips with this by changing the folder owner and then modify the security settings. But this time it is not possible. If I want to set the owner, it says that I have no access for the change of owner. I already have tried to remove the folder by using the administrator-console, but this also print access restricted. What could I do. Do I have to start with PE and remove the folder? Are there alternatives?

I didnt get spam either, i got nothing. I also didnt get an error message on the console. How do i properly sent up a smtp server and send an email from it? I'll not i am testing this on my VM on my local computer. My ISP doesnt block any traffic whatsoever (which is one reason why i use them) so... what can i do? i also tried this tutorial

• Homegroup libraries visible but can't be opened

  I have 2 Windows 7 PCs in a home network. When I create a homegroup, the libraries I share are visible on the opposing machine but when I doubleclick them nothing happens - no error message, nothing at all. It is the same on both computers. The homegroup works to the extent that the printer I shared is visible and can print from the other computer. Only the libraries are inaccessible. • Printing Booklet Page Size in Adobe Reader 4-in-1

  So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. I tried creating a formula to manually to perform it but it got ugly fast. 35,36,34,37,17,54,16,55,33,38,32,39,15,56,14,57,31,40,30,41,13,58,12,59 29,42,28,43,11,60,10,61,27,44,26,45,9,62,8,63,25,46,24,47,7,64,6,65 23,48,22,49,5,66,4,67,21,50,20,51,3,68,2,69,19,52,18,53,1,70 Once I print the booklet I should be able to cut the sheets in half and set the bottom half behind the top and staple it for a simple book. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this. • Use Google Apps/Cloud Services as a Domain Controller Replacement

  This is a Canonical Question about Cloud Services replacing Active Directory. Is it possible to use Google Apps or another Cloud Service as a replacement for a Windows Domain Controller (replacing my whole AD infrastructure)? Specifically, I want to remove our dependence on a local Windows Server; currently it acts as a Domain Controller with File and Print Services. I'd like to seamlessly replace this server with something based on hosted applications. I do not just want to move the server to a dedicated or collocated server. I have yet to figure out how to piece together printer/etc sharing. If anyone has any insight into this, it would be appreciated. The goal is to eventually move all my servers to the cloud then write up a case study on the whole affair.

I once come across the problem that my iPhone rejects receiving new SMS but all the SMS are so important that I don't want to delete them.
