  • Using a named pipe to simulate a serial port on a VMware virtual machine (linux host and client)

    Trying to write a python program to create a simulated data stream and feed it, through a named pipe, to a VMware virtual machine. The host is running Ubuntu 11.10 and VMware player 5.0.0. The Vm is running Ubuntu netbook 10.04.   • Bridging my laptop's wireless and wired adaptors

    I would like to be able to connect a desktop computer that does not have a wireless adapter to my wireless network. I could just run a network cable from my ADSL/wireless router to the desktop computer but sometimes this is not practical. What I would really like to do is bridge my laptop's wireless and wired adapters in such a way that I can run a network cable from my laptop to a switch and another network cable from the switch to a desktop computer so that the desktop computer can access the Internet through my ADSL/wireless router via my latop: +--------------------+ |ADSL/wireless router| +--------------------+ | +-------------------------+ |laptop's wireless adaptor| | | |laptop's wired adaptor | +-------------------------+ | +------+ |switch| +------+ | +-----------------------+ |desktop's wired adapter| +-----------------------+ A bit of Googling suggests that I can do this by bridging my laptop's wireless and wired adapters. In Windows XP's Network Connections I select both the Local Area Connection and the Wireless Network Connection, right click and select Bridge Connections. From what I gather, this (layer 2?) bridge will examine the MAC address of traffic coming from the wireless network and pass it through to the wired network if it suspects that a network adapter with that MAC address may be on the wired side, and vice-versa. If this is the case, I would assume that when the desktop computer attempts to get an IP address from a DHCP server (which is running on the ADSL/wireless router), it would send a DHCP broadcast packet which would pass through the laptop's bridge to the router and the reply would return through the laptop's bridge back to the desktop. This doesn't happen. With some more Googling I find some instruction how this can be done with Linux. I reboot to Ubuntu 9.10 and type the following: sudo apt-get install bridge-utils sudo brctl addbr br0 sudo brctl addif br0 wlan0 sudo brctl addif br0 eth0 sudo ipconfig wlan0 0.0.0.0 sudo ipconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 Once again, the desktop cannot reach the ADSL/wireless router. I suspect that I'm missing some simple important step. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

  • PHP cannot connect to MySQL

    Hello, I recently installed Apache 2 + PHP 5.3.1 + MySQL 5.1.44 on my Windows 7 64bit machine following this guide: http://sleeplessgeek.blogspot.com/2010/01/setting-up-apache-php-mysql-phpmyadmin.html It all went fine, php is working great (even with XDebug) but I cannot connect to mysql server. A simple script I wrote to test connection (yes, root has no pass): $username = "root"; $password = ""; $database = "test"; $hostname = "localhost"; $conn = mysql_connect($hostname, $username, $password) or die("Unable to connect to MySQL Database!!"); It prints this error after 60sec of timeout: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. I can connect to mysql using cmdmysql -h localhost -u root Services are working properly. There also seems to be a problem with PhpMyAdmin (using 3.2.5). As soon as I type user and pass the page loads and turns blank (content-lenght in headers is 0 but status code is 302 Found). Looks like something wrong with cookies (my auth method). I hope someone has a clue, it has to be something dumb simple I missed. Thanks in advance.

  • Moving my OpenID from Livejournal to... something else.

    I've actually been an early user of OpenID, although there are still some questions that I've had with OpenID that I've never really had satisfactorily answered. Now, I understand that if I have full control over my domain, I can set it up so that I can delegate the task of authenticating to another OpenID service provider. The problem is, what I'd like to do is to get the Livejournal server to pass the authentication to someone else, instead of having LJ doing it. Preferably what I'd like to do is get Livejournal, when asked by a authenticating provider, say, "No, I don't do it anymore -- go to this address". The plan was that this address would then be in a domain I fully control, which then would pass it on to whichever service provider I choose. I don't even know if I've gotten my understanding of OpenID right, if all this shenanigans are necessary, if my question makes sense, or if it's even possible with a service provider like Livejournal. (tried tagging this with livejournal, and it told me I couldn't, because I don't have enough reputation. Oh well; one must start somewhere. Sorry for the inconvenience!)

  • Apache: redirect to https before AUTH for server-status

    I want to force https and basic auth for server-status output (mod_status). If I enable auth and user asks for http://site/server-status apache first asks for pass, then redirects to httpS, then asks for pass again. This question is similar to Apache - Redirect to https before AUTH and force https with apache before .htpasswd but I cannot get it work because we are speaking not about generic folder but Location structure.   • Preventing h/w RAID cards from dropping slow JBOD disks

    I'm considering buying a used SAS h/w RAID card for externally attaching HDDs to an HP ProLiant I'm setting up. However, I only require RAID functionality on some of the drives. Theoretically it should be simple to JBOD the other drives, but some of them are inexpensive SATA disks and probably cannot have TLER disabled. I'd like to know, prior to actually ordering a RAID card, whether typically RAID cards would still enforce dropping of disks that do not respond within a few seconds, even if the disk is in a JBOD, and whether there is any way to disable this. Ideally it would be nice to be able to select certain SAS ports that will be pass-through, bypassing the RAID engine entirely and just acting as an HBA for those ports. I know I could buy a separate SAS HBA but that seems like a waste of $ and is also impractical as it's a 1U server so space is extremely limited. My question then is whether the functionality I'm looking for (pass-through on certain ports or at least JBOD drives not getting themselves dropped due to slow response) is typical of proper h/w RAID cards such as PERC 5/E etc. I've browsed through the latter's manual but unfortunately, as with most user manuals, it states the obvious and doesn't state the unobvious. Click on remoteapps or remote desktop, get prompted for authentication again (2). Pass authentication, I get access to app or RDP. Done so far. On session host Signed rdp files with cert. Added the following to the custom RDP settings: Authenticaton level:i:0 = If server authentication fails, connect to the computer without warning (Connect and don’t warn me). prompt for credentials on client:i:1 = RDC will prompt for credentials when connecting to a server that does not support server authentication. enablecredsspsupport:i:1 = RDP will use CredSSP, if the operating system supports CredSSP.     i have a server with ESX5, have a switch with about 20 vlans, this is how setup the trunk port interface GigabitEthernet0/1/1 description ToOper port link-type trunk undo port trunk allow-pass vlan 1 port trunk allow-pass vlan 2 to 14 stp disable ntdp enable ndp enable bpdu enable then, i created a standar switch(sw1) using the vSphere Client, the VLAN ID is set to All (4095), i also created a VM with Debian 6, with a NIC connected to sw1, now, i want to configure this NIC for a selected group of vlans auto vlan10 iface vlan10 inet static address 11.10.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.224 mtu 1500 vlan_raw_device eth0 auto vlan14 iface vlan14 inet static address 11.10.1.65 netmask 255.255.255.248 mtu 1500 vlan_raw_device eth0 so, when i restart the network using /etc/init.d/networking restart, i got this error Reconfiguring network interfaces...SIOCSIFADDR: No such device vlan14: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device vlan14: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device SIOCSIFMTU: No such device vlan14: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device Failed to bring up vlan14. done. this is just part of the error, so, my questions is: is this possible?, i mean, what i'm trying to achieve using ESX Virtual Machines, VLANS, etc is this a Debian problem? can be solved? i've read about a file named z25_persistent-net.rules in Debian but it doesn't exist in my installation. in the In the vSphere Networking for ESX5 guide, you can read: If you enter 0 or leave the option blank, the port group can see only untagged (non-VLAN) traffic. If you enter 4095, the port group can see traffic on any VLAN while leaving the VLAN tags intact. So, in theory, it should work, right? Hope you can help me up with this one Thanks

  • Google Apps, SPF, softfail problem (validates with validation tools, but still softfails otherwise)

    Hi, I guess this is probably a commonly asked and boring question but I'm really at a loss and I don't know what else to do. This might be a duplicate of other questions, but none of the solutions worked for me. I've Googled around and read just about anything I could find but I'm still puzzled as to why it doesn't work. The gist of my problem is that I have set-up Google Apps for a client of mine with the domain fintan.dk. Everthing works just excellent, except emails sent from *@fintan.dk (either with the Gmail web-interface or desktop client) to a non-Google Apps email gets a softfail (I have sent to my University email, an email hosted at MediaTemple and even Hotmail). The emails gets a pass when sent to a Google Apps or Gmail address though... (All emails from that domain are sent via email clients.) So this is what I have done so far: I've added the SPF record Google recommended (v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all), waited several days hoping it would a DNS update delay problem. Now, three days later there is no change. I have verified the settings in the desktop clients several times. I have validated the records with validation tools like the SPF Query Tool, [email protected] and [email protected]. All of them validate and gives a pass, saying there shouldn't be a problem, but strangely there still is. So, I really don't know what else to do. Any help is very much appreciated. Now comes the hard part -- figuring out how to change all of that using LiveJournal's customization options, if that is at all possible (here's hoping I don't need to pay to get that functionality).

  • Force delivery retry without restarting the SMTP Service on Windows Server 2008 R2

    I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box hosting 3 virtual SMTP servers; vSMTP01, vSMTP02 and vSMTP03. The first two are configured to deliver all messages to dedicated smarthosts, while the last is set to just deliver the messages on its own. All other delivery settings are as default ----(vSMTP01)-----> {SMARTHST01} / ----Inbound mail--->---SMTPSRV01---[----(vSMTP02)-----> {SMARTHST02} \ ----(vSMTP03)-----> { Internet } Now I want to take SMARTHST01 out for maintenance, but I don't want to reject submissions to vSMTP01 while doing so, so I just let it continue running. When SMARTHST01 is no longer responding, vSMTP01 queues the messages and wait for the first retry interval to pass (15 minutes). So far so good. Let's say SMARTHST01 gets online again after 20 minutes. The first interval has passed, and I'll have to wait another 25 minutes for the second retry interval to pass. If I stop and start the SMTP Service (Services.msc - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service - Stop), the server will retry all deliveries, but that would cause a service interruption for ALL virtual SMTP servers on the machine, which is highly undesirable. How can I manually force vSMTP01 to retry delivery of all queued messages without interrupting the service of vSMTP02 and vSMTP03?

  • Website latency and bad tcp packets

    I have multiple websites hosted on a Linode VPS and I'm having an issue with one of them: every page that I try to load has about 10 seconds latency. Apache logs are clean and the other websites on the same machine are running well. At a first glance I tought it was a memory problem since the VPS has got only 512M, but from the linode dashboard CPU and Disk I/O are normal. Anyway here we have the ram status: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 487 463 23 0 2 55 -/+ buffers/cache: 404 82 Swap: 255 155 100 Only 23M free, but if it was a memory problem why other websites are going as usual? I took a live capture with wireshark, and there are some duplicates SYN ACK packets just before the 10 seconds gap. I'm out of ideas, looking for some clues.   • Rsync root files between systems without specifying password

    This seems very tricky to me. I've set up my two systems so that I can rsync files between them as me, without specifying password. Now the the problem is to rsync files that belong to root. On both of my systems, there are no root passwords. The only way to become root is via sudo. So I can neither give a password for sudo rsyn local root@remote:, no use my ssh-agent to supply pass phrase. I don't want to set up a root password on any systems; and I do need the files to be owned by root on both systems. EDIT: Using the files that belong to root is just an example, I need a way for my unprivileged account to read/write system (including root-owned) files easily. One example is to copy my configured /root environment into the freshly-installed system. The two systems are actually two VMs under a single host, so it's not a big concern for me to copy root-owned files between them. EDIT 2: If I only want to copy my configured /root environment into the freshly-installed system, I can use tar: sudo tar cvzf - /root | ssh me@remote sudo tar xvzf - -C / But I do need rsync to update from time to time. Any easy way to make it happen? EDIT 3: Formally formulate the question Alright, it all began with the question, how to rsync files that belong to root between two systems as a normal unprivileged user, without specifying password, under the condition that, The root account is locked on both of systems. I.e., there are no root passwords. The only way to become root is via sudo (recommended security practice, see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo) I don't want a completely passwordless sudo but don’t want to be typing passwords all the time either. The normal unprivileged user has entered their ssh pass phrase into the ssh agent. Thanks

    Colleagues, I have need to run a script/program on certain basic OS level events. In particular when a file in Windows is opened. The open may be read-only or to edit, and may be initiated by a number of means, either from windows explorer (open or ), be selected from a viewing or editing application from the native file chooser, or drag-n-drop into an editing or viewing application. Further, i need the trigger to "hold" the event from completing the action until the runtime on the program has completed. The event handler program may return a pass state, or fail state. If fail state has been returned, then the event must disallow the initially requested action. Lastly, I need to add to the file in question a property or attribute that will contain metadata that will be used by the above event trigger handler program to make a determination as to the pass/fail condition that will ultimately determine if the user is permitted to open the file.     After adding the line to /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg as part of creating a transparent proxy, source 0.0.0.0 usesrc clientip restarting haproxy starts giving an error ~# service haproxy reload * Reloading haproxy haproxy [ALERT] 230/153724 (1140) : [/usr/sbin/haproxy.main()] Some configuration options require full privileges, so global.uid cannot be changed. I'm already running service haproxy reload as root. What else do we have to do? Thank you!

    So I've already checked through my config file and I really can't see an instance where any tag hasn't been properly closed...but I keep getting this configuration error...Would you mind taking a look through the error and the config file below? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. FYI, I've already googled the life out of the error and looked through the log extensively, I really can't find anything.   • Nginx1.6.1: Installing from source not running corectly

    I just installed Nginx 1.6.1 from source but it didn't seem to installed correctly. Nginx is running if I service nginx status but when I do nginx -v it outputs command not found. Regular HTML page shows fine and there is no error in the error logs. I am on AWS Ec2 linux AMI.
