  • Debian Stable vs Ubuntu LTS for Server?

    Quick question: Which is a better platform for a professional use server? Debian Stable or Ubuntu LTS? The third party software we plan to use, works on both. Which one is better on it own merits? Take into account things like the kernel (Ubuntu for example has its own custom kernel for servers), and other Ubuntu specific customizations. I keep switching back and forth, and I need to decide so I can recommend one or the other to a client. Right now, I think I am going to choose Debian Stable. Recently, I have had Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04.1 have a few strange issues... I have Ubuntu setup to do automatic updates via a simple script, and every few months or so, libapache2-mod-php5 gets removed because of conflicting packages... Thereby causing me to loose the php function of the web server. Debian Stable has not done anything like this.

  • How do I improve the efficiency of the queries executed by this generic Linq-to-SQL data access clas

    Hi all, I have a class which provides generic access to LINQ to SQL entities, for example: class LinqProvider<T> //where T is a L2S entity class { DataContext context; public virtual IEnumerable<T> GetAll() { return context.GetTable<T>(); } public virtual T Single(Func<T, bool> condition) { return context.GetTable<T>().SingleOrDefault(condition); } } From the front end, both of these methods appear to work as you would expect. However, when I run a trace in SQL profiler, the Single method is executing what amounts to a SELECT * FROM [Table], and then returning the single entity that meets the given condition. Obviously this is inefficient, and is being caused by GetTable() returning all rows. My question is, how do I get the query executed by the Single() method to take the form SELECT * FROM [Table] WHERE [condition], rather than selecting all rows then filtering out all but one? Is it possible in this context? Any help appreciated, Lee

  • Quick / Built-in method for detecting table change in SQL Server?

    Is there a quick and easy way of telling if a table has changed in SQL Server? (I'm using SQL Server 2005). Something like an incrementing ID somewhere that updates on each INSERT, DELETE or UPDATE that I can keep track of. I noticed there is a sys.objects.modify_date column for each table, but I don't think it's quite what I want because the docs say: Date the object was last modified by using an ALTER statement. If the object is a table or a view, modify_date also changes when a clustered index on the table or view is created or altered.

  • Database Vault integration available

    One of the major features of Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 is the provision of a base solution for integration to the Database Vault product. Database Vault is part of Oracle’s security portfolio of product and allows database user permissions to be locked down to only allow appropriate users appropriate access to the product data. By default, when you install the product database, administrators and SYSDBA users have full DML (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE access) to the schemas they own and in the case of the SYSDBA users, all schemas on the database. This can be perceived as an issue. Database Vault allows an additional layer of security to disable inappropriate access. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework, a prebuilt Database Vault solution has been provided to provide base DML access to product data for product users only. The solution is shipped with the database installation files and includes a set of SQL files to create, disable, enable and delete the Database Vault objects. The solution contains a Database Vault Realm, RuleSets, Rules and Command Rules that can be used as is or extended to meet site specific needs. The solution is consistent with other Database Vault solutions provided for other Oracle applications such as PeopleSoft, E-Business Suite, JD-Edwards and Siebel. Customers familiar with the database vault solutions for those products will recognize the similarities between the solutions.   • RDA and Fusion Middleware Diagnostic Framework Integration

    Further to my last blog entry "FMw Diagnostic Framework : Automatic Capture of Diagnostic Data Upon First Failure!" I have spent some time exploring how Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) integrates with Diagnostic Framework. Remote Diagnostic Agent, by default, collects the information about the last 10 incidents which have been captured in the Automatic Diagnostic Repository (ADR). This information can be located via RDA's Start Page Menu system. See screenshot below. Screenshot - Viewing Diagnostic Framework Incident Information in a RDA Package Note: In the next release of RDA - version 4.30 - the Diagnostic Repository menu label will have it's own position in the weblogic managed server sub menu hierarchy rather than be a child menu item of the logs menuDiagnostic Framework is also capable of launching RDA engine and including the output in an incident package. This is achieved via the command "IPS GENERATE PACKAGE". The RDA output is written to DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<server name>/adr/diag/ofm/<domain name>/<server name>/incpkg/pkg_[number]/seq_[number]/rda The RDA collected files are best viewed (as shown in the screenshot above) by opening the RDA Start Page - "DFW__start.htm" - from this directory in a browser. If you do not have a browser available on the host machine, zip the contents of the rda directory and transfer and extract to a machine which has a browser.  The explanation of the integration goes a little deeper.     Some time ago my colleague David Konecny discussed the question "What works better for you? NetBeans IDE or Chrome Developer Tools?". It's a good read. David highlights the point that it's not a question of either/or but both, since the two tools are like the apple/pear dichotmoy. However, good news! The two worlds are not divided in NetBeans IDE 7.4. Changes you make in Chrome Developer Tools (CDT) are automatically persisted to the related files in NetBeans IDE, as you can see in a new YouTube clip I made today. The new integration of CDT with NetBeans IDE has been mentioned in the NetBeans IDE 7.4 New & Noteworthy, while on Twitter this was sighted yesterday: Watch the movie above and within 5 minutes you too will see the simplicity and power of CDT integration with NetBeans IDE. In other news.   • How to do regex HTML tag replace in MS SQL?

    I have a table in SQL Server 2005 with hundreds of rows with HTML content. Some of the content has HTML like: <span class=heading-2>Directions</span> where "Directions" changes depending on page name. I need to change all the <span class=heading-2> and </span> tags to <h2> and </h2> tags. I wrote this query to do content changes in the past, but it doesn't work for my current problem because of the ending HTML tag: Update ContentManager Set ContentManager.Content = replace(Cast(ContentManager.Content AS NVARCHAR(Max)), 'old text', 'new text') Does anyone know how I could accomplish the span to h2 replacing purely in T-SQL? Everything I found showed I would have to do CLR integration. Thanks!

  • Best solution for a team home server

    I created a home server with Ubuntu 12.04 Server (using an old Netbook with an Atom CPU and 512Mb). The idea is just to be used for a small team (maximum 10 persons) that will have constant access by SSH to the main projects and could add features with Git, and will, as well, have their own directory (with VirtualHost configured) for their own personal projects. Everything is configured and running, but my question is : What is the best solution here for everyone to work? It is to have them on the http group and then all have access as normal users to the /var/www folder (that also contains GitWeb and Drupal), or would be to create a new user named after the project (as an example) where only those with the password could have access to work (configured with VirtualHost). Notice: The idea is to have 1 person responsible of the server directly (since he is the one who is hosting it), 2 more people that will have access to the root from their home in order to configure anything from their home, plus anyone else that joins the group without any root access, but just the necessary access to create personal works and work with Git.

  • Installing software on an offline Ubuntu server

    Assuming that I have a server with Ubuntu server newly installed on it. I was thinking of installing the very same version on Virtual Box (Or any other virtualization software), connect it to the internet and use apt-get to only download the packages for upgrading the system and the new software such as (tomcat7, openjdk6-default-headless..etc). Then copy the downloaded packages from the archive folder to the offline server's archive folder through a USB stick. So now the virtual system won't actually be upgraded nor have any new software installed. But would running the very same apt-get commands on the offline system without the download directive -d be executed without issues ? *EDIT:*This needs to be as simple as possible because I'll have to write a guide for our client to do this on his own and so it won't be acceptable to require deep Linux knowledge to do this.

  • can't ping from virtualbox ubuntu server --nat connection

    i set up an ubuntu server in virtual box following these and these instructions.My connection worked,also ssh . Then, i signed up in dyndns.com ,i configured the router ,but in the port forward i changed the 2222 port to 80 because it couldn’t forward from 2222.My port is open and accepting connections but i don’t have any more connection from the server in the virtual box. From virtual box settings-network-port forwarding , i use: Host IP :127.0.0.1 , Host port :80 , Guest Port :22 ,Guest IP : its empty. I am not sure if i am using right the address in /etc/network/interfaces , i use 192.168.0.2 and also this address i use for the firewall rules in the router. Also,in the server /etc/resolv.conf i put that address and in /etc/mysql/my.cnf. I can ping that address but nothing more.(of course neither ssh works) Thank you

I know I could connect to it from a different machine which has a graphical user interface, but in this case I would rather do it on the box. So, from a fresh Ubuntu Server installation, what is the minimum I need to install to be able to launch a web browser I can use for this? For example chromium, firefox or arora.

    In SQL Server 2005 and earlier, it is not possible to pass a table variable as a parameter to a stored procedure. When multiple rows of data to SQL Server need to send multiple rows of data to SQL Server, developers either had to send one row at a time or come up with other workarounds to meet requirements. While a VB.Net developer recently informed me that there is a SQLBulkCopy object available in .Net to send multiple rows of data to SQL Server at once, the data still can not be passed to a stored proc.Possibly the most anticipated T-SQL feature of SQL Server 2008 is the new Table-Valued Parameters. This is the ability to easily pass a table to a stored procedure from T-SQL code or from an application as a parameter.

  • Java on Ubuntu server 12.04?

    I'm a little confused at the moment. My back story in short, is that I'm trying to set up a Minecraft server on an Ubuntu server I've recently set up, obviously to do this I needed Java, but after googling for a short while I wasn't entirely sure whether it is possible (or legal?) to do so in Ubuntu 12.04 due to licensing type issues - so I installed open JDK instead which appears not to work properly with the Minecraft server software (I half expected this) I'm now considering uninstalling open JDK and instead trying to get proper Java on there instead, my question is, is this possible? Is it Legal? And if so how do I go about doing it? Because I'm finding it very difficult to find any instructions on how to do so for 12.04 . . .

    I have 35 windows7 standalone computers right now and planning to setup a LAN/workgroup using ubuntu as a server if its a LAN. Purpose for network.. Files from client computers to be accessed by me and vice versa through a shared folder on the server. Files only include word documents and very small project files. The network wont have Internet at the moment. What I would like to know.. How would i configure the ubuntu server to recognize the clients and will the clients be able to view the shared folders through their windows machines simultaneously? Would appreciate feedback.   • How to issue SQL Server lock hints in WCF Entity Framework?

    I'm just learning the WCF entity framework (and .net in general), and I'm running into a problem specifying lock hints in an embedded SQL query. I'm trying to specify a query that has lock hints in it (e.g., "SELECT * FROM xyz WITH(XLOCK, ROWLOCK)") and I keep getting errors from the runtime that the query syntax is not valid. The query works if I enter it directly into SQL Server. Is there some special syntax for lock hints when creating IQueryable result sets, or do I have to somehow mess with the transaction isolation level (probably not possible, as I need to specify different lock hints on a subquery within the main query).

  • 12.04 x64 Server Login Failure

    After some serious GRUB issues after routine kernel updates, forcing a grub-reinstall via chroot and some single-user mode maintenance, I now cannot login to my server (except via single-user mode) When attempting to SSH to the server my connection is reset immediately after entering username - no password prompt is presented. I've plugged in my monitor and keyboard to the headless server and when trying to login I receive: login: "PAM Failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort" immediately after entering my username - again, no password prompt is displayed. I am able to gain access via kernel recovery mode and login as root through single-user mode with networking. I've attempted a dpkg reconfigure believing I may have had some incomplete/borked packages, but to no avail. Looking through /etc/pam.d/login doesn't seem to lead me in any obvious directions and I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. Googling doesn't help me much, one guy reinstalled (really don't want to do this) and the rest I could find were old Gentoo related bugs. Any tips?

    Over the weekend I worked a little more on my ACS2 sample. Instead of writing it all down, I decided to quickly record four short videos that cover the relevant features and code. Have fun ;) Part 1 – Overview This video does a quick walkthrough of the solution and shows the web application part. This includes driving the sign in UI via JavaScript (thanks Matias) as well as the registration logic I wrote about here. watch Part 2 – SOAP Service and Client The sample app also exposes a WCF SOAP service. This video shows how to wire up the service to ACS and hows how to create a client that first requests a token from an IdP and then sends this token to ACS. watch Part 3 – REST Service and Client This part shows how to set up a WCF REST service that consumes SWT tokens from ACS. Unfortunately there is currently no standard WIF plumbing for REST. For the service integration I had to combine a lot of code from different sources (kzu, zulfiq) as well as the WIF SDK and OAuth CTPs together. But it is working. watch Part 4 – Silverlight and Web Identity Integration This part took by far the most time to write. The Silverlight Client shows ho to sign in to the application using a registered identity provider (including web identities) and using the resulting SWT token to call our REST service. This is designed to be a desktop (OOB) client application (thanks to Jörg for the UI magic). watch code download
