• long access times and errors in iis application

  I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. • Setting up kerberos for SQL Server 2008 R2 not taking effect

  I am trying to configure Kerberos for my SQL Server (the database engine domain account). I have executed the following command: SETSPN -A MSSQLSvc/MyDBServer:1433 MyDomain\SQLServerService Replacing MyDBServer with the FQDN of the server and replacing MyDomain\SQLServerService with the name of my account. I then ran the query: SELECT s.session_id , c.connect_time , s.login_time , s.login_name , c.protocol_type , c.auth_scheme , s.HOST_NAME , s.program_name FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s JOIN sys.dm_exec_connections c ON s.session_id = c.session_id This returns NTLM. So it's not Kerberos. What am I mising? The delegation tab is available for the account, so the spn bit worked perfectly fine. Is it not required to set some settings in the delegation tab? I've seen this in the case of setting kerberos for Sharepoint 2010 (which I intend to setup). Thanks

• RDP access to DirectAccess Server via DirectAccess

  I have just setup a Win2008R2 DirectAccess server (and also a Win2008R2 Active Directory server). From the Internet I can Remote Desktop login to the AD server, but I cannot RDP into the DirectAccess server. I can PING both servers and get an IPv6 response. (I can RDP to the DirectAccess server from the internal company network) DirectAccess is configured to allow full intranet access. I think I've hit a mental block, the answer will probably be obvious, but I just can't see it.

  I would like to create a read-only copy of my SQL Server 2008 database on a secondary server for reporting and analysis. I've been testing log shipping, configured to run every 5 minutes or so. Alas, there appears to be a stumbling block, for exclusive access is required on the target database during the restore, which in turn requires killing all active connections. This is far from ideal, especially if a user is in the middle of running a report. Any better suggestions? Edit : I'm doing this on the Express edition.

• Reporting Services 2008: Virtual directories not visible in IIS7..

  I'm having some problems with Reporting Services on Windows Server 2008 Standard. I've installed server 2008 as a standalone webserver (with roles/features of an web application server). On top of that, I've installed Sql Server 2008 Standard with Reporting Services (and the rest of the BI tools). Problem is, I want to modify the rights on the virtual directories. However, the virtual directories aren't appearing in IIS 7 management tool. I can connect to reporting services, albeit only with the local windows admin account. I can download Report Builder fine from an session on the server (but not from any clients). I've tried removing the default website from IIS, and that stops the reporting services website from working. The machine (a VM) isn't for production use - it's used on a closed network internally for testing and development purposes. I need to be able to let my fellow developers login without a password, and they must be able to install ReportBuilder 2.0. Must not be linked to a domain or active directory in any form. Google isn't much help, the results suggest I modify the virtual directory Does anyone have any suggestions?

• How to properly shutdown a Linux VMware Server Host

  Hi Everybody: In our lab, we have a server running Ubuntu Linux 8.04.4 x64, with VMware Server 2.1 hosting 4 VM's. I have a major concern with regards to shutting down the host server. Mostly, how do I ensure that the guest VM's are being shut down safely? In the VMware web interface console, I have enabled: "Allow virtual machines to start and stop automatically with the system" I enabled the Default Startup Delay for 15 seconds along with the "Start next VM immediately if the VMware Tools start" option checked I enabled the Default Shutdown Delay with a 60 second shutdown delay and a Shutdown Action of "Shut Down Guest" All VM's have the VMware Tools installed and properly working. All VM's are moved up into the "Specified Order" section of "Startup Order", thus when powering the server back on, all those VM's should start up again in that specified order. When I went to shut down the server, I used the shutdown -h now command. Based on the settings I entered above, I was expecting a 4 minute shutdown, as there is an option to delay the shutdown of each VM by 60 seconds. However, that is not what happened. Instead, the server shutdown in under a minute. When I powered the server back on, only 2 VM's properly loaded. The other 2 showed the following error: "Power on Virtual Machine" failed to complete If these problems problems persist, please contact your system administrator. Details: Cannot open the disk '[location to .vmdk]' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: Failed to lock the file. Obviously, if this error occured, then it is clear to me that the VM's were not properly shutdown, or the server powered off before the VM's were completely shutdown. I have fixed the above error by deleting the .lck files in the respective VM directories. How would I know if the VM's were properly shut down? I checked the VMware-server logs, but they only seem to display the logs of when the vmware-mgmt service is running in the current session. I'm mostly running Linux VM's, so is there an easy way to know whether or not a server was properly shut down in Linux? Thank you all for the help!

• SQL Server 2005 Default Backup Plan

  I noticed that a newly imported database on SQLServer 2005 had configured itself (without my knowledge) to perform daily backups; but it's not deleting old files and quickly filling up the disk. I don't know how the backup job got configured (maybe that's something that gets transferred when you move a database?) but I'm having trouble modifying it. The backup runs as part of SQL Server Agent job called "Daily Backups". This job runs a package called "(SSIS Packages)\Maintenance Plans\Backup Plan" -- which I can't find. The "Management\Maintenance Plans" area for my server is empty. I imagine I could delete the existing plan and re-create it manually, but I was hoping to just modify what was already there, since all that's missing is deleting old files.

  Hi there, I am adding a new Login with SQL Server Authentication. I set its Server Role as public and then went into User Mapping, selecting the only database this user should have access to. I then change the Default Schema to dbo and made this user the db_owner. I then connect to the instance using the new user's credentials and I can see not only the database he should have access to but all the other attached databases. How can I limit this user to just see the database he has access to? Thanks in advance!

  Hello, First of all I must say that I'm ver inexperienced server and network user. But I rented a unmanaged dedicated server. Well I didn't know what unmanaged really means, then I learned it when I needed support. Well I must do everything by myself. I have a problem. I had already 4 IPs on my server when I rented it. But then I needed more Ips and my server assigned me 32 Ips in which I can only use 27 of them. 85.25.230.0 - 85.25.230.31 this is my Ip range and they say the following Ips must not be configured on the server: 85.25.230.0 - network address 85.25.230.1 - gateway address 85.25.230.2 - router redundancy 85.25.230.3 - router redundancy 85.25.230.31 - broadcast address But the problem is ok Ips are assigned to me but they are not setup on my server. How will I setup Ips to work on my server? I did this after my reseach on google: I used this command on command prompt: route add 85.25.230.0 mask 255.255.255.224 85.25.230.1 metric 1 if then it said OK!. and I thought they should be working. (btw, mask is given to me by my ISP and I don't know metric 1 and if means I just saw it on the net and write it here) I setup my domains via using Plesk Kontrol Panel. So i added one domain and setup one of my new Ips 85.25.230.5 to it. But no it is not working. When I visit the domain via browser, there is a Plesk page comes and says this domain is not configured on the server. Then I changed the domains Ip to one of my old Ips which are given to me with the server and which I have been using for my other domains for a long time. Ok in a second, domain started working. I set it back to my new Ip and domain did not work. As I said, I'm not an expert and do not now the logic. But I'm eager to learn. Can you tell me what might couse the problem and did I do wrong while setting up IP RANGE to my server, if so how can I set them up? Thank you, Efe

  Right bit of a simple question can I input nText into a pivot table? (SQL Server 2005) What I have is a table which records the answers to a questionnaire consisting of the following elements for example: UserID QuestionNumber Answer Mic 1 Yes Mic 2 No Mic 3 Yes Ste 1 Yes Ste 2 No Ste 3 Yes Bob 1 Yes Bob 2 No Bob 3 Yes With the answers being held in nText. Anyway what id like a Pivot table to do is: UserID 1 2 3 Mic Yes No Yes Ste Yes No Yes Bob Yes No Yes I have some test code, that creates a pivot table but at the moment it just shows the number of answers in each column (code can be found below). So I just want to know is it possible to add nText to a pivot table? As when I've tried it brings up errors and someone stated on another site that it wasn't possible, so I would like to check if this is the case or not. Just for further reference I don't have the opportunity to change the database as it's linked to other systems that I haven't created or have access too.   I have setup mirroring on my MSSQL server it is an automatic fail over. Lets say the SQL server goes down. I have found connection strings to reconnect the site to the mirror database for MSSQL 2008 Data Source=myServerAddress;Failover Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=True; OR Provider=SQLNCLI10;Data Source=myServerAddress;Failover Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=True; OR Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=myServerAddress;Failover_Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Database=myDataBase; Trusted_Connection=yes; Is there something similar I can use for PHP to do the same sort of thing. This way if only the database goes down the site instantly fails over to the mirror database as soon as it is online. Thoughts/Suggestions/Comments All appreciated. I checked connectionstring.com but did not find a section for PHP

  Essentially I have a job which runs in BIDS and as as a stand lone package and while it runs under the SQL Server Agent it doesn't complete properly (no error messages though). The job steps are: 1) Delete all rows from table; 2) Use For each loop to fill up table from Excel spreasheets; 3) Clean up table. I've tried this MS page (steps 1 & 2), didn't see any need to start changing from Server side security. Also SQLServerCentral.com for this page, no resolution. How can I get error logging or a fix?

  Background: (SQL Server 2005, Standard Ed.) I have a maintenance plan running backups, taking a full backup 1/day, and t-log every 15 minutes. I have it set to create a text file report of each run, but that creates A LOT of files on the file server. These are hard to sort through, which makes them less useful. Question: There is an option in "Reporting and Logging" settings for appending all logs together, but how do you clean this out? If you're appending to the same log file every time, how should you make sure this file doesn't grow indefinitely? Is there a build-in function to clean out portions of appended logs like there is for cleaning out individual old log files?

• Where is the TFS database?

  I've been using TFS 2010 with no problems. I tried adding a user and I got the following error message. "TF30063: You are not authorized to access <serverName>\DefaultCollection. -The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized." I remoted into the server, <serverName>, and opened the TFS Console. The logs mentioned a connection string: ConnectionString: Data Source=<serverName>\SS2008;Initial Catalog=Tfs_DefaultCollection;Integrated Security=True While remoted in I open SQL Server 2008 Management Studio opening the (local) server with Windows Authentication. It shows the connection to be (local)(SQL Server 9.04.03 - <serverName>\Admin), and there is no Tfs_DefaultCollection database. Can someone tell me what is going on? Was I wrong in connecting to this instance of the database (i.e. Is the log file the wrong place to find the connection string)? Is the database so corrupted that SQL Manager Studio cannot see it anymore, although TFS could? Should I be logging into Management Studio as user SS2008? btw I don't know of any such credentials.

• Intermittent Disconnection of Client Computers from Domain Server

  The Background: I have Windows 2008 server Enterprise Version with 25 user cal licences. It has a domain and all users and a network shared HP printer in it. The Server has two network cards and both these cards as well as all client machines are on IP addressing scheme of 192.168.1.* with subnetmask 255.255.255.0. Of the two network cards viz. 192.168.1.231 and 192.168.1.233, only 192.168.1.231 is registered with DNS. In 192.168.1.233(i.e. 2nd network card) has default getway as 192.168.1.231 and dns address as 192.168.1.231. The Server has three hard disks with capacities as 500gb, 500gb and 1TB and are partitioned as (C,D,E), (F,G) and (K) with partition K having all user data into various Shared Folders. Each of these folders(On Partition K), are mapped onto each user's computer as per the right of access given to them. The Problem: The Server was installed about 6 months ago and till date not even once, the Server has Hung or has given any problem. All the Clients computers are able to run the web based software from their computers via ip address, e.g. http://192.168.1.231/webERP/default.aspx. However, occassionally, when any client computer tries to browse network mappings, it hangs. Again, there is no fixed pattern. This may happen after running smoothly for say 3 days. On each Client's machine, the network settings are as follows: IP Address: 192.168.1.* where * is 1,2,3 .... Sunnetmask: 255.255.255.0 defauly getway: 192.168.1.231 Which is a server card and DNS address. preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.231 In Advanced Tab under Wins: LMHostLookup is Unticked and default is radio buttoned. Ideally, I would have loved to have Disabled NETBIOS over TCP/IP but some network printers do not get accessed if this option is enabled(ie. Radio Buttoned). Bacause Disabling Netbios will drastically reduce traffic of NETBIOS broadcasting to all the computers on the net to do naming resolution. On Server, I have WINs Running which I have Scavanged Records, verified Database Integrity etc, removed Tombstoned Records etc. The Critical Errors shown only once a day when the server is statred are 4224(WINS) and 12923 - Server Licencing failed to Update DNS Record. I fail to understand as why do client machines HANG when they try to browse mapped network shared folders on K Drive. Kindly Advice

  I have the following data structure in my database: LastName FirstName CourseName John Day Pricing John Day Marketing John Day Finance Lisa Smith Marketing Lisa Smith Finance etc... The data shows employess within a business and which courses they have shown a preference to attend. The number of courses per employee will vary (i.e. as above, John has 3 courses and Lisa 2). I need to take this data from the database and pass it to a webpage view (asp.net mvc). I would like the data that comes out of my database to match the view as much as possible and want to transform the data using SQl so that it looks like the following: LastName FirstName Course1 Course2 Course3 John Day Pricing Marketing Finance Lisa Smith Marketing Finance Any thoughts on how this may be achieved? Note: one of the reasons I am trying this approach is that the original data structure does not easily lend itself to be iterated over using the typical mvc syntax: <% foreach (var item in Model.courseData) { %> Because of the duplication of names in the orignal data I would end up with lots of conditionals in my View which I would like to avoid. I have tried transforming the data using c# in my ViewModel but have found it tough going and feel that I could lighten the workload by leveraging SQL before I return the data. Thanks.

• Why does my SQL Server use AWE memory? and why is this not visible in RAMMap?

  We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) 8GB server where, according to Sysinternals RAMMap, 2GB of memory is allocated using AWE. As far as I understood, this means that these pages stay in physical memory and are never pushed out. This causes other apps to be pushed out of physical memory. In RAMMap, on the Physical Pages tab, the Process column is empty for all of the AWE pages. We run SQL Server on that box, but (through SQL Server Management Studio, under Server Properties - Memory, under Server memory options) it says is configured not to use AWE. However, when stopping SQL Server, the AWE pages are suddenly gone. So it really is the culprit. So I have three questions: Why does RAMMap not know/show that a SQL Server process is responsible for that AWE memory? Why does SQL Server Management Studio say that AWE memory is not used? How do we make configure SQL Server to really not use AWE memory?

• How can I do an "insert" statement from MS SQL -> MYSQL using linked servers

  Is it possible to do an "insert" statement through linked servers. I know it is possible by using MSDTC...but does this work between MS SQL and MYSQL? Any help would be greatly appreciated. As of right now...I can update and select between the 2 databases but it gives me an error when I try to run an insert statement. • SQL Server Job system silently fails

  We run numerous scheduled jobs using MS SQL 2005 job scheduler. Over the past few weeks, we've been witnessing that a running job will simply STOP and will not record any history in the Log File Viewer. What appears to be happening is that the server will start a job and record these steps into msdb. At a random step during a job, the server will stop running the job and it records no error. This silent failure prevents a "Step 0" record from being created and we won't see anything in the Log File Viewer. Anyone else experience this?
