Sync Your Windows Computer with Your Ubuntu One Account [Desktop Client]

Do you have a Windows computer that needs to be synced with the Ubuntu systems connected to your Ubuntu One account? Not a problem. Just grab a copy of the Ubuntu One Desktop Client and in just a few minutes your Windows system will be feeling the Ubuntu love. Once you get the desktop client installed you will see a new System Tray Icon waiting for you. Access the Context Menu and select Add this computer to start the syncing process. Enter your account details into the login window that appears and click Connect to Ubuntu One. Go back to the System Tray Icon, access the Context Menu, and select Synchronize Now. You can monitor the progress as small desktop notification messages keep you updated during the synchronizing process. The newly synchronized files will be placed in an Ubuntu One Folder under Documents/My Documents. Here is a quick peek at the Preferences Window. The only odd thing (bug) that we noticed with the whole setup was “Disconnected” being displayed even though our system was freshly synchronized and logged in. How to Quickly Add Multiple IP Addresses to Windows Servers

If you have ever added multiple IP addresses to a single Windows server, going through the graphical interface is an incredible pain as each IP must be added manually, each in a new dialog box. Here’s a simple solution. Needless to say, this can be incredibly monotonous and time consuming if you are adding more than a few IP addresses. Thankfully, there is a much easier way which allows you to add an entire subnet (or more) in seconds. Adding an IP Address from the Command Line Windows includes the “netsh” command which allows you to configure just about any aspect of your network connections. If you view the accepted parameters using “netsh /?” you will be presented with a list of commands each which have their own list of commands (and so on). For the purpose of adding IP addresses, we are interested in this string of parameters: netsh interface ipv4 add address Note: For Windows Server 2003/XP and earlier, “ipv4″ should be replaced with just “ip” in the netsh command. If you view the help information, you can see the full list of accepted parameters but for the most part what you will be interested in is something like this: netsh interface ipv4 add address “Local Area Connection” 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 The above command adds the IP Address 192.168.1.2 (with Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0) to the connection titled “Local Area Network”. Adding Multiple IP Addresses at Once When we accompany a netsh command with the FOR /L loop, we can quickly add multiple IP addresses. The syntax for the FOR /L loop looks like this: FOR /L %variable IN (start,step,end) DO command So we could easily add every IP address from an entire subnet using this command: FOR /L %A IN (0,1,255) DO netsh interface ipv4 add address “Local Area Connection” 192.168.1.%A 255.255.255.0 This command takes about 20 seconds to run, where adding the same number of IP addresses manually would take significantly longer. How to share internet over VPN and inside a virtual machine (Windows)?

` My final goal is to have a virtual machine at work in which anything that happen inside (tcp, udp, ping, ...) will use the Internet connection of a computer at home. So, if inside this VM should I open an Internet browser to a site such as "show my IP", my home IP should be printed. I am also looking for a way to debug/develop a software inside this VM, but I would like to tunnel only the connections of this software, not the full graphical interface, this is why a Remote Desktop solution won't fit me. The connection between the both computer should be secured somehow, like in a SSH tunnel. This ultimately should allow me to have a portable VM in which I can connect to whatever networks I have access at home, in a secure way. This is my configuration: At work, I have a LAN-connected desktop computer, with Windows 7 Professional Edition as a host [computer W] On this same computer, I have a Virtual Box machine running Windows XP [computer V] At home, I have a laptop computer, running Windows 7 Home Edition [computer H] This laptop is connected to a Livebox 2 broadband modem by Wifi. What I am trying to do is to sit at work in front of the virtual machine [V], and connect to a webpage as if the request was issued from the laptop [H] at home, and the data should be securely tunneled between the both. But if I am using internet directly inside [W], it should use the normal LAN interface at work. To achieve my goal, I first try using VPN, than SSH tunneling, without success. I first tried to install Teamviewer between [W] and [H]. This is working fine, I can send files, share desktop, etc. Teamviewer has a VPN mode that creates a new VPN network interface with its own IP, both on computer [W] and [H]. This allowed me to connect [H] as a network computer inside [W] and I was able to share files, but not to share Internet. At this point, I tried to use from [W] the Internet as if I was at home. I setup a route (using route add from command line in [W]) in order to instruct each packet going to a given website to pass by the new VPN interface on [W], with the hope it will be forwarded to [H], but the webpage was simply inaccessible. I then tried to setup a Windows VPN connection between [W] and [H], using the Windows 7 VPN feature. [H] was the server and [W] the client. But it failed: I got the "Unable to join a remote PC while trying to VPN" 720 Error when I was setting up the client on [W]. I think the problem is the Livebox 2 that could blocks the packets. But I am not sure of this: 1) with Teamviewer it works fine, 2) Livebox 2 has a configuration page for port mapping that gives the proper configuration to map VPN ports as an example so I guess that it should allow it, 3) I opened the ports 1723 (TCP) and 500 (UDP) according to some forums. Virtual box has a network configuration parameter in which I can use the VPN network interface created by Teamviewer as a bridged connection. This is suppose to work in the sense that all packets issued by the virtual machine [V] is supposed to go directly to [H]. But I had no internet connection inside [V]. Using the NAT mode, [V] has internet. For me this is the feature that I look for: filtering all connections from the virtual box application to the VPN network interface, and the remaining should use the normal LAN interface. Apart from the build-in feature of VBox, I even do not know if it is possible to route the packet from a given application to a given interface. Finally I tried also SSH tunneling, but this is not the solution I looked for. Using an external SSH server (Linux), I was able to create a localhost connection on [W] (or [V]), using something like 'ssh -N -D server[H]' in order to allow a web browser located in [W] to connect to any website using the SOCKS 5 proxy created locally (SOCKS is a build-in feature of SSH). But repeating the same operation on windows, using a windows SSH server inside [W] (I tried freeSSHd), it failed: SFTP worked, but not the SOCKS tunneling, it was like the browser in [H] did not find internet. Finally only Teamviewer looked able to create a VPN between [W] and [H], but I am not able to use it, as I want, I mean using the Internet connection of [H] sitting in front of [W]. I also tried to bridge the VPN interface and the wifi interface inside [H], but it blocked my laptop, and I tried also the Internet Connection Sharing, trying to share on [H] the wifi connection over the VPN interface. This fails also, but it seems because Teamviewer actually use the wifi interface to be able to provide the VPN link, so I guess I am creating a recursive loop. I do not know what to try next... One difference I noticed between the test and production environment is when I used the soap url in the browser the production site pops up a 'Authentication Required' popup. When I gives my proxy username and password in this popup, it shows the soap request details. The same is applicable for the login url also. First it will ask for the 'Authentication' then it will take to the sugar crm login page? Is it a server security setting? If it is then how to set this user name and password using java in a web service call. The authentication required popup is same as the one which comes when we try to access the tomcat manager through a browser. Thanks

We have an ASP.NET application that uses Forms Auth. When users log in, a session ID cookie and a Forms Auth ticket (stored as a cookie) are generated. These are session cookies, not permanent cookies. It is intentional and desirable that when the browser closes, the user is effectively logged out. Once a user logs in, a new window is popped up using window.open('location here');. The page that is opened is effectively the workspace the user works in throughout the rest of their session. From this page, other pop-ups are also used. Lately, we've had a number of customers (all using latest versions of IE8) complaining that the when they log in, the initial pop-up takes them back to the log in screen rather than their homepage. Alternately, users can sometimes log in, get to the homepage (which again, is in a new pop up window), and it all seems fine, until any additional pop-ups are created, where it starts redirecting them to the log in screen again. In attempting to troubleshoot the issue, I've used good old Fiddler. When the problem starts manifesting, I've noticed that the browser is not sending up the ASP.NET session ID session cookie OR the Forms Auth ticket session cookie, even though the response to the log in POST clearly pushes down those cookies. What's more strange is if I CTRL+N to open a new window from the popped-up window that is missing the session cookies, then manually type in the URL to the home page, those cookies magically appear again. However, subsequent window.open(); calls will continue to be broken, not sending the session cookies and taking the user to the log in screen. It's important to note that sometimes, for seemingly no good reason, those same users can suddenly log in and work normally for a while, then it goes back to broken. Now, I've ensured that there are no browser add-ons, plug-ins, toolbars, etc. are running. I've added our site as a trusted site and dropped the security settings to Low, I've modified the Cookie Privacy policy to "accept all" and even disabled automatic policy settings, manually forcing it to accept everything and include session cookies. Nothing appears to affect it. Also note the web application resides on a single server. There is no load balancing, web gardens, server farms, clusters, etc. The server does reside behind an ISA server, but other than that it's pretty straight forward. I've been searching around for days and haven't found anything actionable. Heck, sometimes I can't even reproduce it reliably. I have found a few references to people having this same problem, but they seem to be referencing an issue that was allegedly fixed in a beta or RC release (example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/179260/ie8-loses-cookies-when-opening-a-new-window-after-a-redirect). These are release versions of IE, with up-to-date patches. I'm aware that I can try to set permanent cookies instead of session cookies. However, this has drastic security implications for our application. Update It seems that the problem automagically goes away when the user is added as a Local Administrator on the machine. Only time will tell if this change permanently (and positively) affects this problem. Time to bust out ProcMon and see if there is a resource access problem.

jQuery DatePicker - 'fake' click on page load

Hey! I've got a quick question about the jQuery UI DatePicker. When I load the page, defaultDate: 0 will work fine with selecting the current day's date. I would like to create a 'fake' click on the date so it will execute my JavaScript function and retrieve information from the database. Vertical textes inside of table headers with respect of a JavaScript based on SVG library

I use jqGrid with many columns contains Boolean information, which are displayed as checkboxes inside of table (see http://www.ok-soft-gmbh.com/VerticalHeaders/TestFixedO.htm as an example). To display information more compact I use vertical column headers. It works very well and works in jqGrid in all browsers (see my discussion with Tony Tomov in jqGrid forum http://www.trirand.com/blog/?page_id=393/feature-request/headers-with-vertical-orientation/), but in IE vertical texts looks not nice enough. I was asked from users why the texted displayed so strange. So I think about using a JavaScript based SVG library like SVG Web ( http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/ ) or Raphaël ( http://raphaeljs.com/ ). SVG is very powerful and it is difficult to find a good example is not very easy. I need only display vertical texts (-90 grad, from bottom to up) and use if possible without working in mode of absolute position. So one more times my question: I need have a possibility to display vertical texts (-90 grad rotation) inside of <td> element of table header. I want use a JavaScript based SVG library like SVG Web or Raphaël. The solution must support on IE6. Have somebody a good reference to example which could help me to do this? If somebody post a whole solution of the problem I would be happy. I want to detect whether foo.com is visited without directly looking at $('1').getComputedStyle (or in Internet Explorer, currentStyle), or any other direct method on that element. The purpose of this is to get around a potential browser restriction that would prevent direct inspection of the style of visited links. For instance, maybe you can put a sub-element in the <a> tag, or check the styling of the text directly; etc. Any method that does not directly or indierctly rely on $('1').anything is acceptable. Doing something clever with the child or parent is probably necessary. Note that for the purposes of this point only, the scenario is that the browser will lie to JavaScript about all properties of the <a> element (but not others), and that it will only render color: in :visited. Therefore, methods that rely on e.g. text size or background-image will not meet this requirement. I want to improve the speed of my current scraping methods. The majority of time (at least with the jQuery method in Firefox) is spent on document.body.appendChild(batch), so finding a way to improve that call would probably most effective. What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

If we've learned anything from HTML/CSS it's that, declarative languages (like XML) work best to describe User Interfaces because: It's easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it's easy to parse. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers. I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML. It's apparent to me that the current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn't be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc). There are 45 GUI platforms for Python alone It's seems reasonable to me that there should be a general purpose, open source, standardized, platform independent, markup language for designing desktop GUIs. Much like what the W3C made HTML/CSS into. WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction. Now that the 'browser wars' are over should we look forward to a future of 'desktop gui wars?' Note: This topic is relatively subjective in the attempt to be 'future-thinking.' I think that desktop GUI development in its current state sucks ((really)hard) and, even though WPF is still in it's infancy, it presents a likely solution to the problem. Servlet Filter: Socket need to be referenced in doFilter()

jquery-autocomplete does not work with my django app.

Hi everybody, I have a problem with the jquery-autocomplete pluging and my django script. I want an easy to use autocomplete plugin. And for what I see this (http://code.google.com/p/jquery-autocomplete/) one seems very usefull and easy. For the django part I use this (http://code.google.com/p/django-ajax-selects/) I modified it a little, because the out put looked a little bit weired to me. It had 2 '\n' for each new line, and there was no Content-Length Header in the response. First I thought this could be the problem, because all the online examples I found had them. But that was not the problem. I tried also to format the output, but this doesn't work either. I set brakepoints to the function and realized that they won't be called at all. How come my form input sometimes moves when I refresh the page?

On a page that I'm designing I have a form with one input of type text. Normally, this form and input render properly in my browser, Chrome, but occasionally, it renders about 20 pixels to the left of where it is supposed to be. When I refresh the page, it goes back to the original, correct place. I have only tested in Chrome so far, so this isn't a cross-browser issue (it happens in the same browser). Is there anything wrong with my code below? Vertical text inside table headers using a JavaScript-based SVG library

I use jqGrid with many columns containing boolean information, which are displayed as checkboxes inside the table (see http://www.ok-soft-gmbh.com/VerticalHeaders/TestFixedO.htm as an example). To display information more compactly I use vertical column headers. It works very well and works in jqGrid in all browsers (see my discussion with Tony Tomov in jqGrid forum http://www.trirand.com/blog/?page_id=393/feature-request/headers-with-vertical-orientation/), but in IE vertical text is blurred and doesn't look nice enough (open the link above in IE and you will see exactly what I mean). I was asked from users why the text displayed so strangely. So I'm thinking of using a JavaScript-based SVG library like SVG Web ( http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/ ) or Raphaël ( http://raphaeljs.com/ ). SVG is very powerful and it is difficult to find a good example. I need only to display vertical text (-90 grad, from the bottom up) and use if possible without working in mode of absolute positioning. So one more time my question: I need to have a possibility to display vertical text (-90 grad rotation) inside <td> elements of a table header. I want to use a JavaScript-based SVG library like SVG Web or Raphaël. The solution must support IE6. Does anybody have a good reference example which could help me do this? If somebody posts a whole solution of the problem I would be happy. How can I determine if an image has loaded, using Javascript/jQuery?

I'm writing some Javascript to resize the large image to fit into the user's browser window. (I don't control the size of the source images unfortunately.) So something like this would be in the HTML: <img id="photo" src="a_really_big_file.jpg" alt="this is some alt text" title="this is some title text" /> Is there a way for me to determine if the src image in an img tag has been downloaded? I need this because I'm running into a problem if $(document).ready() is executed before the browser has loaded the image. $("#photo").width() and $("#photo").height() will return the size of the placeholder (the alt text). In my case this is something like 134 x 20. Right now I'm just checking if the photo's height is less than 150, and assuming that if so it is just alt text. But this is quite a hack, and it would break if a photo is less than 150 pixels tall (not likely in my particular case), or if the alt text is more than 150 pixels tall (could possibly happen on a small browser window). Facebook Registration Plugin redirects in wrong situation

I am using the PHP Facebook SDK to leverage the Facebook registration/login plugin. Unfortunately, even when I access this page from a brand-new browser (Firefox, just installed, which means no cookies or sessions exist) and I am still redirected. Note the PHP code below[2]. Also, the SITE_HOST is a constant for the www. address. I think the actual condition that is being met is response.status being equal to "unknown". This status check implies an unsuccessful response from Facebook, right? Without this getLoginStatus check in the code, it will actually load the the registration page, and a Facebook registration form: Note how it says: "You have registered", which I did a month ago (assuming this qualification is met by allowing the Facebook App permissions, which was done when I initially installed the Facebook SDK). So why would the redirect code work for me (seemingly), then still redirect me when I am using a browser NOT signed in to Facebook? Also, the jQuery function at the bottom of the script loads all.js. This is all I need, right? Footnotes: Someone with "connected" status is logged in to Facebook and has approved your Facebook App permissions. No matter which page this was on it caused this, and since this code appears in a global include file, I've restricting from printing to only on the registration page, which was the intention for this code to my understanding.

Problems re-populating select options in Rails when form returned with errors

I have a form with 2 select options in it -- frequency and duration. When there are errors with the form, and it is returned to the browser, the select options are not re-populated with the selections the user made even though the returned values for those fields match the values of options in the selects. Also, when the form is returned, these fields are not marked as having errors even though their values are blank. If I add this bit of code to the form <p><%= @challenge.attributes.inspect %></p> I see that this for duration and frequency when the form is returned to the browser: "duration"=>3888000, "frequency"=>172800 These values match values on the options in the select fields. Is there anything special in Rails that needs to be done so that the select fields are re-populated with the user's selections? Any thoughts on what the problem could be or what I should try next? Help is greatly appreciated! -Rick PS If you look at some of the other questions, you'll notice I've asked about this in the past. At one point, I thought the form was returning values for frequency and duration in days rather than seconds, but that's not the case. PPS Here's one other bit of information that might matter, but my tests indicate that it probably does not. (Though, I'm a bit of a newbie to this, so don't take my word for it.) These two fields are chained together using the cascade jquery plugin. The javascript is included on the page (not in a separate file) and some of the js is being created by Rails. Getting 404 in Android app while trying to get xml from localhost

This must be something really stupid, trying to solve this issue for a couple of days now and it's really not working. I searched everywhere and there probably is someone with the same problem, but I can't seem to find it. I'm working on an Android app and this app pulls some xml from a website. Since this website is down a lot, I decided to save it and run it locally. Now what I did; - I downloaded the kWs app for hosting the downloaded xml file - I put the file in the right directory and could access it through the mobile browser, but not with my app (same code as I used with pulling it from some other website, not hosted by me, only difference was the URL obviously) So I tried to host it on my PC and access it with my app from there. Again the same results, the mobile browsers had no problem finding it, but the app kept saying 404 Not Found: "The requested URL /test.xml&parama=Someone&paramb= was not found on this server." Note: Don't mind the 2 parameters I am sending, I needed that to get the right stuff from the website that wasn't hosted by me. I changed the contents of the .htaccess file into "ALLOW FROM ALL" (works, cause the browser on my mobile device can access it and shows the correct xml). I am running Android 4.0.4 and I am using the default browser AND chrome on my mobile device. I am using MoWeS to host the website on my PC.
