• Different buddy lists for different accounts in iChat

  I have currently 4 accounts added to iChat, Standard GTalk GTalk For Google Apps Facebook Olark Facebook and Olark have their own Buddy List Group viz. Facebook and WebUser groups and thus those buddies come in a separate list, while the buddies from GTalk and GTalk from Google Apps do not have any group associated with them and they come under Buddies list. It's a bit of a pain because I want to have buddies from GTalk for Google Apps in a separate buddy list than the default one. Is it possible to do it in iChat?

• Virtual system drive is split between separate LUNs

  My hardware VMWare guy told me that a Win2008R2 server I have has a D drive that is split between two separate LUNs. He could not tell me if that's a good thing or bad just that it's not standard practice for him. Would you please explain the benefits or drawbacks of this setup? Thanks EDIT Some additional info. What happened was I had D drive already allocated. Then I asked for more. They said there's no more space on whatever LUN my D drive is on so the option they gave me was that part of the D drive will be on one LUN and other part will be on another LUN. Hope that helps

• Commit charge peak higher than system limit

  We are seeing some very strange behaviour on our servers and google didn't turn up anything usefull, so I'm tossing it out here. A standard server is configured with 4GB Ram, 2 4GB pagefiles and running windows server 2003. The servers are running 50-120 vb6/.net applications which normally consume no more than 100mb of memory, but will occasionally run up to 300 mb. The issue with a single process spending way too much memory is being traced down somewhere else, but the thing that is baffling us is that the reported peak charge is vastly higher than what we have available. As the image above shows, we are getting reported peaks that are way higher than what the system is actually capable of delivering. This number has been seen as high as 29GB, which makes no sense at all for a system with a limit of 12GB. Does anyone have an idea what is going on?

• Set origin for forwarder based on virtual domain in Postfix

  I currently have a machine set up to operate with two domains. The main name uses the standard Unix-user delivery, and the second domain is entirely virtual (using virtual_alias_domains and virtual_alias_maps), with the second domain only forwarding mail. However, when mail is forwarded, it still appears to be delivered by the host of the primary domain (presumably set by myorigin.) Is it possible to get it so when mail is forwarded to the virtual domain, it appears to be delivered by it as well? That domain is on another IP and I'd like to use it so the mail stays consistent.   Hi, We have purchased an unmanaged VPS windows hosting solution from one of the UK based companies. We have Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. We need to install certain third party applications on that server. Unfortunatelly, one of the applications requires a MAC address to be present at all times - this is their way of making sure that software is not pirated (which it isn't). We have tried installing a virtual loopback network card, but this has brought the server down - i.e. we couldn't connect using remote desktop any longer. At the moment we are limited with what we can try. This is an unmanaged solution, therefore any support including restarts is rather costly. Are you aware of any low-risk solutions? Thank you

• Tool to convert a series of image into a single sprite sheet

  Are there any known tools that can take a serie of pictures and generate a single sprite sheet from them? (ie. place all the images into a single image, one after the other). I have found some very basic software doing this, but I am looking for one that is able to detect duplicate frames as well as outputting some kind of data structure that allow me to programatically retrieve the coordinate of each frame on the generated image. I need this to convert existing animations with many duplicate frames and I am a bit surprised that there is no standard software to do this, as most infos you can find on the web about this is people doing this completely manually.. Any recommendations?

  I want to buy a $40000 1 tera flop cluster to keep it in a room. What are the standard configurations? Cluster is supposed to do molecular dynamics simulations on biological systems. I'm proposed a 4 pc with 8 cores each by the selling company I'm deadling with. It looks like I also need infiniband. Does some one has an experience -- what phisical memory should I buy etc? I know things change very quickly... Still there might be a point or two to state. Edit: OS is supposed to be linux, application is gromacs.

• How to have 2 windows machines on the same network with the same IP address

  I have a custom made ADC device that is spitting out data by addressed UDP packets. I have that device plugged into a 4 port switch. I have one windows embedded standard 7 machine which is the normal recipient of that data. To be able to receive the data (Using LabVIEW) the windows network adapter IPv4 settings must have a static IP address that corresponds to the UDP packet destination. I would like to add a second windows machine (This one is just regular Win 7 Pro) to simultaneously catch the data, however with all devices connected to the switch, the Win 7 Pro machine recognizes an IP address conflict and will not take the setting for the required static IP address. (The network adaptor settings show that the correct value has been entered but ipconfig shows that it is not actually set.) Neither windows machine needs to transmit network data, they only need to be able to receive the UDP data from the ADC device. Is there any way to disable this IP address conflict detection 'feature' of windows networking?

  In my IIS 7.5 hosted in a Windows Server 2008 R2 I have several websites with no DNS address assigned. Let's take for instance the site (as named in IIS) with site name mySite. I have for this site the standard binding with no host name. Suppose that my server IP address is, for instance, 101.22.23.01. Therefore it seems logic to me that in order to access the website, I should place in the address bar of my browser: [IP_address]/[sitename] in this case: 101.22.23.01/mySite but it does not work. Shall I specify something else in the bindings?

• What's the simplest way to get .flac music files into iTunes?

  I'm looking for a simple way to import .flac files into iTunes, so I can play them on my mac, and when I'm out, my iPhone, and I'm willing to be I'm not the first person to want to do this. What are the best tools for doing this? The quality of the music is useful, but truth be told, the speakers I'd play them on are so crappy that a lot of the sound quality in the .flac format would be lost anyway, so I'm not averse to converting to mp3 files. If it helps give any context, I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 9, connected to a 16gb iPhone with standard apple headphones, which is sometimes plugged into Bose SoundDock for music, and the music files are piano performances. I've create that and it works when I access it on local network, but when I access it from outside of local network (internet) the www.mysite.com:502 can't accessed but the www.mysite.com can accessed. what should I do to make www.mysite.com:502 goes online?   I am trying to convert a list of property id numbers that has a standard format of 0000-A-00000-00-00, where my worksheet has the various combinations of 1-A-123 10-B-1234 Ideally they would read as follows 0001-A-00123-0000-00 0010-B-01234-0000-00 I've tried using the custom number formatting but it doesn't like the letter in the middle of the number. I didn't know if my only option was to break them apart and then put them back together again. I would accept a solution that merely put the leading zeros at the front of the number, (max is 4 characters) so the result could look like 0001-A-123

• unstable / variating sound level (volume) within same song / clip

  Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

  When creating a new instance on AWS using an official Ubuntu 12.04 server AMI, what differences are there compared to if I was to do a standard server install on a computer of my own? For example, the default user is 'ubuntu'. An SSH public key is added to that users authorized_keys file. Sudo is passwordless for that user. PasswordAuthentication is disabled for SSH. etc etc. Configurations have been changed from their defaults, and I'd like to know if there is a list, or somewhere I could find out the modifications made.

• Locking down firmware to keep stolen laptop from being formatted?

  On the Mac laptops there are ways through the terminal to lock down the computer so that if someone tries to format the computer they won't be able to do it without the password. This way locks down the firmware. Is there a universal way to do the same thing on a PC? I know there are brands out there such as Samsung, Dell, etc that utilize different fimware types, and in turn will mean that their firmware will be locked down differently. That being said is there a "command code" that will allow you to lock the firmware to keep theives from formatting the hard drive and wiping out your data? I know a person who has time, and knowledge can get any password, and hopefully the person is smart enough to use another password to lock down the firmware, but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking if it's possible, and if so how? Does the standard PC user require a 3rd party app, or can it be done through the command line? Or Terminal if you are on Linux?

  I did send out an Outlook vote to hundreds of employees, using their email address (which is mostly [email protected], but there are many exceptions). The incoming votes are not matched against the email address, but against the display name. Unfortunately, the display name has no real standard either. So instead of seeing this: [email protected] Voted: Yes [email protected] Voted: No I see this: [email protected] [email protected] Doe, Johnathan Philip Voted: Yes Doe - Peeters, Marian Voted: No In the actual list I see the addresses that I sent the vote to PLUS extra lines with the votes that came back. Is there a quick way to match my "send" list with the "received" list? One thing I thought of was to dump the global address book in a file and in Excel use =vlookup. But that seems a lot of work (and I am not even sure that I have the authorization to dump the address book).

I'm actually trying to write a shell script that logs the output of a command to a file but, since the command takes a long time to complete (about 15 minutes), I would like to start parsing the output of the command (content of the file) before the command is completed, so I can send messages to the standard output (the user), like: 10% complete 45% complete and so on. Program steps Redirect command to a file: $(command) $FILE Start reading and parsing the output ($FILE) before the command is finished. • incorrect DNS entries on server 2008 r2

  On the main DC (windows server 2008 R2 standard) in our network I have to clear some old DNS entries every now and then in the Forward and Reverse Lookup Zones. I have set the server Aging/Scavenging settings to Scavenge stale resource records, with both the No-refresh interval and Refresh interval to 5 days. Yet every now and then I still have to logon to the sever and remove the DNS entries for computers that is not part of the domain anymore or has been renamed ect. Is there a different way to automatically remove the old entries?

• SQL2005 reporting server: intense security activity

  On my reporting server the Security log shows large numbers of Logon/Logoff events, often 10 or more, when you run pretty much any report in the Report Manager. Is this normal or is it a classic sign of having the wrong setup? Some system details: Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, virtual server running under VMWare). SQL Server 2005 SP3 Standard Edition, running databases, Report Manager, and Ananlysis Services cubes. No other major services on the machine (i.e. it's not a domain controller, Exchange server or anything like that). Any ideas, please, guys?

• 504 Gateway Timeout on server clusters

  Hi All, Here's our scenario: We're running three websites on three web servers hosted on virtual machines running the following: IIS6 Win 2003 Standard Edition Oracle 10g Sitefinity 3.7 We do not have constant control over these servers and something's gone wrong in the interim in that we're getting constant 504 Gateway Timeouts. The other thing that's happening is that if you hit one of the sites, that site is trying to pull themes from one of the sites App_Themes folder in Sitefinity, which of course should not be happening at all. If someone has any ideas on why this should suddenly have started happening I would appreciate it. Many thanks

• Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts?   I have a .htaccess fil on a Apache22 server. RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /index.php?p=$1 [L] The idea is when the request is /testpage it should be rewritten to /index.php?p=testpage. The problem is that apache does a write before my file, so the actually request is testpage.xml which actually does exists. Therefore, the first RewriteCond is newer true, and my rewrite rule is never applied on the /testpage request. There server should be a standard setup on a FreeBSD server. I know this work on other servers.

• Retaining expanded/contracted nodes in Word 2010's navigation pane

  I have a lengthy document in Word 2010 which makes copious use of standard header styles. These display hierarchically (and very usefully!) in the navigation pane. But the list of these sections and subsections in the navigation pane is somewhat lengthy, with all nodes being expanded by default. I am now working near the end of the document so every time I open the document I contract the first so many header 1 nodes to compress the list to fit on one screen. I then have direct access to the later sections while still letting me access the earlier sections if needed. The problem is that as soon as I close the document all the customization I did in the navigation pane is lost. Is there any option or setting somewhere that will retain the expanded or contracted state of nodes in the navigation pane?
