  The Model-View-ViewModel is very popular with WPF and Silverlight. I've been using this for my most recent projects, and am a very large fan. I understand that it's a refinement of MVP. However, I am wondering exactly what unique characteristics of WPF (and Silverlight) allow MVVM to work, and prevent (or at least make difficult) this pattern from working using other frameworks or technologies. I know MVVM has a strong dependency on the powerful data binding technology within WPF. This is the one feature which many articles and blogs seem to mention as being the key to WPF providing the means of the strong separation of View from ViewModel. However, data binding exists in many forms in other UI frameworks. There are even projects like Truss that provide WPF-style databinding to POCO in .NET. What features, other than data binding, make WPF and Silverlight uniquely suited to Model-View-ViewModel?

• Mac OS X: Intel vs. PPC marketshare

  I was looking at my plugins, and ended up looking at Silverlight on several Mac systems. What I noticed (from Wikipedia), was that only Silverlight 1 runs on PPC. Without knowing about the technical details and trade-offs, I was surprised. On its face, if you build Silverlight 1 for PPC and Intel, would it have been hard to continue to support both chipsets? So, assuming this was a decision based on marketshare, I tried to search for information on the Mac OS PPC vs. Intel marketshare, but could not find anything on point. Does anyone here have an idea what the ratio is? It seems like the most important architectural/product decision you would make for a Mac OS X product.

• Navingating to an .html file in the assembly

  I’m working with the WPF WebBrowser control to navigate to a html page hosting Silverlight. It seems I cannot use the NavigateToString or NavigateToStream method since I have Silverlight content. The html content loads fine but not Silverlight. So I think I’ll have to use the Navigate method which takes an Uri. Now I html page I’d like to navigate to is in a .html file in my Visual Studio project so I will have to have a local uri of some sort. I don’t want the html file to be copied to the output folder since I don’t want to distribute it separately; I want it to be somehow included in the assembly. The problem is that the WebBrowser control doesn’t seem to allow relative Uris or pack://application: uris. How could I accomplish navingating to an .html file in the assembly?

• WCF: What is the practical difference between transport and message reliability?

  Hello I am looking at differences between using WPF in .NET or using Silverlight 4 for the GUI front end of an app that connects to WCF services. I have read that net.tcp binding in Silverlight 4 only supports transport level reliability. With a WPF desktop app we can use message level reliability. What is the actual difference? If transport level reliability ensures that all TCP packets get through, doesnt that also mean that all WCF SOAP messages will also get through? I am also concerned that Silverlight only supports async message but thats a different issue. Thanks

• WCF RIA Services v1.0 Timeouts

  I have a RIA service methods which return quite a large amount of (binary) data to my silverlight application. The methods themselves (database access etc) complete quickly, but since I upgraded to v1.0 from the RC2 I've been experiencing timeouts, even when I limit the data returned to the smallest objects. Debug shows the method returning, then 20-30 seconds later the silverlight "method complete" event will fire. There is not enough data to cause that much lag. Could anyone suggest why this might be? I've been unable to find any breaking changes documentation specific to the RC2 = 1.0 upgrade. Trying to eliminate any other possible causes also, but this is literally a case of worked before the install, doesn't work now! (also upgraded silverlight 4 tools for vs).

• Problem with assembly loading in .NET

  Hi guys, I have got two projects in my solution: Silverlight and standard one. The standard one references System.Xml assembly (version 4.0.0.0), however the Silverlight one references System.Xml assembly (v. 2.0.5.0). I want to make an instance of XmlWriter in my Silverlight project. Here comes the problem - the exception is thrown (file not found for System.Xml assembly). I believe it is a matter of different assembly versions. Do you have any idea how to resolve this issue? Ive read something about the binding redirection - is it the key to the solution? If so, how to do this? Thank you in advance for the reply! Cheers.

• ASP.NET web site running in IIS and hosting WCF service fails to get connections on the TCP server

  I am using the combination of Silverlight client application along with ASP.NET web site running in IIS and hosting WCF service. This WCF service uses the library that starts a TCP server and and initiates requests to the connected TCP clients when the silverlight client application makes the WCF async requests. When I use this library in a local WPF application, the TCP server is able to receive client connection requests and I can get info from these clients. But when I use the same library from the implementation of the WCF service inside the ASP .NET web site project (+ Silverlight client), the server strangely does not receive any connection requests i.e. when I create TcpListener object and issue a start, nothing happens (nor an exception is generated). My setup is I am using the Ethernet for the Internet and Wi-Fi for the TCP clients. Is the WCF service getting confused because of this? Is there any special WCF settings I should put in for TcpListener.Start to work?

• Distributing a Python Software for Linux [closed]

  Hi, I am writing my first software in Python for Ubuntu (or Debian based Linux). I am looking for a good advise on the best way to distribute my software. The easist alternative that I can think of at the moment is to archive the python code into *.tar.gz, and let user execute the main python script as an executable to run the software. I realize that this may not be the best approach. I looked at the Debian maintainer guide: "http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-dother.en.html", not too sound lazy, but the guide looks very intimidating for a beginner. Are there any other tutorial that show how to create a debian package for a beginner ? If anyone has a suggestion do let me know. Thanks ^_^

• Building a regex builder

  I am a beginner in programming in general and web development in particular. I am especially bad at regular expressions. Recently I was involved in building a couple of cPanel plugins(Perl-CGI) and that's when I realized how bad I am in regex. As a result, I have decided to build an online regex builder - this will help me to learn regex and help other struggling with regex. I have checked out GSkinner, Rubular and a couple of others like regexpal. It seemed to be a little difficult to use, hence i thought of writing another one. I do not know which tool is best suited for the job. should I write it in Perl or Python? My skill level is between beginner and intermediate in both those languages. What would be a good starting point - building it for the CLI or for the browser? I plan to get a string as an input, ask if the user want to search or search and replace, enter the search string (and the replace string where applicable) and then generate a regex. Would this be the right way to go?

  First of all, I am not a web developer but I can say that I understand in general the difference between PHP, ASP.NET, etc. I have played a little with ASP.NET and C# as well, however, I didn't continue the learning path. Now I'd like to learn ASP.NET MVC but there is no a book for a beginner in ASP.NET MVC so I had a look at the tutorials but it seems that I need to learn C# first and SQL Server and HTML, am I right? So please tell me how can I learn ASP.NET MVC directly (I mean without learning ASP.NET Web forms). What do I need to learn (You can assume that I am an absolute beginner). Update: It is true that i can find ASP.NET MVC tutorial that explain ASP.NET MVC, but I used to find ASP.NET web forms books that explain SQL and C# at the same time and take you step by step. In ASP.NET MVC I don't know how can I start! How can I learn SQL in its own and C# in its own and then combine them with ASP.NET MVC!

  I'm Marco from Italy and I'd like to ask you a piece of advice about my career. I hold a Ms degree in Biology, I enjoyed a lot studying it and I got very good grades but I didn't know what to do with my degree in the real life. Few months ago, I began to read a book about Python programming (Introduction to Computer Science, Zelle J.) and I've great fun learning Python as a beginner, I wake up in the morning thinking about doing excersies and writing simple programs with python :) I'm also watching free lectures from MIT open courseware, and I'm feeling a certain degree of regrets for never asking myself what was computer science, since it seems to me it's a magic world. After weeks of doubts, I made a move :) I applied for a CS bachelor degree abroad, I got an interview and I'm going to start this great adventure next September. I feel incredibly excited at it, but a little bit scared too. Scared because sometimes I think I'm making a great mistake for my life restarting from a bachelor in a completely different area of study. Sometimes I hear people saying the IT market is bad, sometimes I hear other ones saying quite the opposite instead. Moreover, some colleagues of mine suggested me to try to get into Bioinformatics, instead of CS. My question is: I want to really discover if CS is for me, I mean the passion of my life. I know I'm just a beginner and I can't say nothing about it yet. What do you suggest me: CS or Bioinformatics? If I get a Bs in CS, could I get into bioinformatics without relevant experience, taking into account I have a Ms Biology degree? Any comment is appreciated, thanks in advance.

• Does an inexperienced programmer need an IDE?

  Reading this other question makes me wonder if I (as an absolute beginner PHP programmer) should stick with WAMP and Notepad++ or to switch to some IDE like Eclipse. It's understandable that skilled developers will benefit from a big shiny IDE. But why should an absolute beginner use an IDE? Do the benefits outweigh the extra challenge of learning the IDE on top of learning to develop? Update for clarification: My goal is to get some basic programming experience. By choosing PHP and WAMP (and FogBugz and Kiln) I hope to avoid having to navigate the tricky / messy OS specifics and compiling etc. and just focus on basic functionality like an online user registration form. I've got lots of theoretical understanding from university a decade ago but no practical experience. I want to remedy that with a hobby project that would be similar to a real-world sellable web app. There are so many questions to ask. So many pitfalls I probably have to blunder into. This question is just one piece (my first!) of that puzzle.

• How to connect ethernet on ubuntu (with auto-detection by Ubuntu)

  Do I need to post another thread for the same? If so, sorry. Yes, I saw that it's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with ethernet, and the exact same problem, that is no internet even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to express my issue. English is not my mother tongue. I'm a total beginner with ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. For 2 weeks, I've kept reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that as a beginner, I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files (eg: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm confused between putting figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem?? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1. I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number? no clue again) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

• MEF CompositionInitializer for WPF

  The Managed Extensibility Framework is an amazingly useful addition to the .NET Framework.  I was very excited to see System.ComponentModel.Composition added to the core framework.  Personally, I feel that MEF is one tool I’ve always been missing in my .NET development. Unfortunately, one perfect scenario for MEF tends to fall short of it’s full potential is in Windows Presentation Foundation development.  In particular, there are many times when the XAML parser constructs objects in WPF development, which makes composition of those parts difficult.  The current release of MEF (Preview Release 9) addresses this for Silverlight developers via System.ComponentModel.Composition.CompositionInitializer.  However, there is no equivalent class for WPF developers. The CompositionInitializer class provides the means for an object to compose itself.  This is very useful with WPF and Silverlight development, since it allows a View, such as a UserControl, to be generated via the standard XAML parser, and still automatically pull in the appropriate ViewModel in an extensible manner.  Glenn Block has demonstrated the usage for Silverlight in detail, but the same issues apply in WPF. As an example, let’s take a look at a very simple case.  Take the following XAML for a Window: <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.MainView" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="MainWindow" Height="220" Width="300"> <Grid> <TextBlock Text="{Binding TheText}" /> </Grid> </Window> This does nothing but create a Window, add a simple TextBlock control, and use it to display the value of our “TheText” property in our DataContext class.  Since this is our main window, WPF will automatically construct and display this Window, so we need to handle constructing the DataContext and setting it ourselves. We could do this in code or in XAML, but in order to do it directly, we would need to hard code the ViewModel type directly into our XAML code, or we would need to construct the ViewModel class and set it in the code behind.  Both have disadvantages, and the disadvantages grow if we’re using MEF to compose our ViewModel. Ideally, we’d like to be able to have MEF construct our ViewModel for us.  This way, it can provide any construction requirements for our ViewModel via [ImportingConstructor], and it can handle fully composing the imported properties on our ViewModel.  CompositionInitializer allows this to occur. We use CompositionInitializer within our View’s constructor, and use it for self-composition of our View.  Using CompositionInitializer, we can modify our code behind to: public partial class MainView : Window { public MainView() { InitializeComponent(); CompositionInitializer.SatisfyImports(this); } [Import("MainViewModel")] public object ViewModel { get { return this.DataContext; } set { this.DataContext = value; } } } We then can add an Export on our ViewModel class like so: [Export("MainViewModel")] public class MainViewModel { public string TheText { get { return "Hello World!"; } } } MEF will automatically compose our application, decoupling our ViewModel injection to the DataContext of our View until runtime.  When we run this, we’ll see: There are many other approaches for using MEF to wire up the extensible parts within your application, of course.  However, any time an object is going to be constructed by code outside of your control, CompositionInitializer allows us to continue to use MEF to satisfy the import requirements of that object. In order to use this from WPF, I’ve ported the code from MEF Preview 9 and Glenn Block’s (now obsolete) PartInitializer port to Windows Presentation Foundation.  There are some subtle changes from the Silverlight port, mainly to handle running in a desktop application context.  The default behavior of my port is to construct an AggregateCatalog containing a DirectoryCatalog set to the location of the entry assembly of the application.  In addition, if an “Extensions” folder exists under the entry assembly’s directory, a second DirectoryCatalog for that folder will be included.  This behavior can be overridden by specifying a CompositionContainer or one or more ComposablePartCatalogs to the System.ComponentModel.Composition.Hosting.CompositionHost static class prior to the first use of CompositionInitializer.   Just returned from the West Palm Beach .Net User Group Meeting featuring Shervin Shakibi who spoke to us about What’s New in Silverlight 4.0.  It was a great talk where the audience was fully engaged with Shervin as he spoke about and demonstrated the various new features of Silverlight 4.0. We enjoyed free pizza and soda as well as a free raffle with every attendee leaving home with a freebie.   For our June Meeting, Don Demsak, Microsoft MVP, will be speaking to us about WCF Data Services.  We will continue to have free pizza and a free raffle with great prizes, so hope to see you all there.   When the Windows Phone 7 Developer SDK was released a couple of weeks ago at MIX10 many people noticed the SDK doesnt include a template for a Panorama control.   Here at Clarity we decided to build our own Panorama control for use in some of our prototypes and I figured I would share what we came up with. There have been a couple of implementations of the Panorama control making their way through the interwebs, but I didnt think any of them really nailed the experience that is shown in the simulation videos.   One of the key design principals in the UX Guide for Windows Phone 7 is the use of motion.  The WP7 OS is fairly stripped of extraneous design elements and makes heavy use of typography and motion to give users the necessary visual cues.  Subtle animations and wide layouts help give the user a sense of fluidity and consistency across the phone experience.  When building the panorama control I was fairly meticulous in recreating the motion as shown in the videos.  The effect that is shown in the application hubs of the phone is known as a Parallax Scrolling effect.  This this pseudo-3D technique has been around in the computer graphics world for quite some time. In essence, the background images move slower than foreground images, creating an illusion of depth in 2D.  Here is an example of the traditional use: http://www.mauriciostudio.com/.  One of the animation gems I've learned while building interactive software is the follow animation.  The premise is straightforward: instead of translating content 1:1 with the interaction point, let the content catch up to the mouse or finger.  The difference is subtle, but the impact on the smoothness of the interaction is huge.  That said, it became the foundation of how I achieved the effect shown below.   Source Code Available HERE Before I briefly describe the approach I took in creating this control..and Ill add some **asterisks ** to the code below as my coding skills arent up to snuff with the rest of my colleagues.  This code is meant to be an interpretation of the WP7 panorama control and is not intended to be used in a production application.  1.  Layout the XAML The UI consists of three main components :  The background image, the Title, and the Content.  You can imagine each  these UI Elements existing on their own plane with a corresponding Translate Transform to create the Parallax effect.  2.  Storyboards + Procedural Animations = Sexy As I mentioned above, creating a fluid experience was at the top of my priorities while building this control.  To recreate the smooth scroll effect shown in the video we need to add some place holder storyboards that we can manipulate in code to simulate the inertia and snapping.  Using the easing functions built into Silverlight helps create a very pleasant interaction.    3.  Handle the Manipulation Events With Silverlight 3 we have some new touch event handlers.  The new Manipulation events makes handling the interactivity pretty straight forward.  There are two event handlers that need to be hooked up to enable the dragging and motion effects: the ManipulationDelta event :  (the most relevant code is highlighted in pink) Here we are doing some simple math with the Manipulation Deltas and setting the TO values of the animations appropriately. Modifying the storyboards dynamically in code helps to create a natural feel.something that cant easily be done with storyboards alone.   And secondly, the ManipulationCompleted event:  Here we take the Final Velocities from the Manipulation Completed Event and apply them to the Storyboards to create the snapping and scrolling effects.  Most of this code is determining what the next position of the viewport will be.  The interesting part (shown in pink) is determining the duration of the animation based on the calculated velocity of the flick gesture.  By using velocity as a variable in determining the duration of the animation we can produce a slow animation for a soft flick and a fast animation for a strong flick. Challenges to the Reader There are a couple of things I didnt have time to implement into this control.  And I would love to see other WPF/Silverlight approaches.  1.  A good mechanism for deciphering when the user is manipulating the content within the panorama control and the panorama itself.   In other words, being able to accurately determine what is a flick and what is click. 2.  Dynamically Sizing the panorama control based on the width of its content.  Right now each control panel is 400px, ideally the Panel items would be measured and then panorama control would update its size accordingly.  3.  Background and content wrapping.  The WP7 UX guidelines specify that the content and background should wrap at the end of the list.  In my code I restrict the drag at the ends of the list (like the iPhone).  It would be interesting to see how this would effect the scroll experience.     Well, Its been fun building this control and if you use it Id love to know what you think.  You can download the Source HERE or from the Expression Gallery  Erik Klimczak  | [email protected] | twitter.com/eklimczDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
