• Can't connect disk management to remote XP PC from local Win7/Server 2008

  Scenario as follows: support technicians using Windows 7 PC's or Server 2008 terminal server are unable to connect Disk Management MMC snap in to a remote PC when the remote device is running Windows XP. "Disk management could not start Virtual Disk Service (VDS) on ". This can happen if the remote computer does not support VDS, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by Windows Firewall." Connecting from another XP machine or 2003 server to the same XP machines works fine. Even connecting from XP/2003 to the Win7 or 2008 server works fine. Windows firewall disabled on all devices. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that XP uses logical disk manager service whereas Win7/2008 use Virtual disk manager service. But there doesn't seem to be any way to use logical disk manager service from 7/2008 to connect to XP...

• Inevitable Corporate Bureaucracy

  Top executives of most smaller organizations want their companies to be different from the larger corporations. They want their organizations smaller in size; but bigger in productivity by eliminating red tapes and corporate bureaucracy. When the company is smaller, people often work like firefighters – taking on new business and technology challenges without thinking about any procedures and guidelines. People also tend to wear many hats to accomplish tasks quickly in order to integrate new businesses. For example, software developers in smaller organizations may take on responsibilities of client interactions, requirements gathering, design and development, code deployment, production support, network infrastructure support, database design and maintenance along with countless other duties. In addition, systems in smaller organizations tend to be loosely guarded. So, people often don't follow many procedures in order to setup environments and implement technical projects. It's not uncommon to change code and deploy without anyone realizing. Similarly, business requirements may also get defined in an informal manner without any type of documentation. As the company grows, everything starts to change significantly impacting people and the overall business process. Suddenly, following procedures become extremely important. Consequently, new roles, guidelines and procedures start to emerge. Everything from business process to technology implementation start to become more and more process oriented. Organizations start to define and document steps, invent procedure to track process and systems level changes, and start restricting access to various systems for security reasons. At the same time, as a growing company start doing businesses with larger clienteles, they are automatically forced to abide by all sorts of industry compliance laws. Moreover, growing companies tend to recruit experienced individuals to fill new roles who usually bring their expertise from larger and more bureaucratic organizations.   Despite the best efforts from the top executives, it seems increased number of procedures and guidelines as well as new recruits automatically contribute to the evolution of corporate bureaucracy. Maybe, corporate bureaucracy is an inevitable side effect of a growing organization.

• Password Management for Oracle WebLogic customers

  One of the most common requests for enhancements I get across my desk is that customers wish to allow end users to change their passwords from our products. Now, typically password management is not in the realm of individual applications but it is an infrastructure requirement, so we don't usually add this to our roadmaps by default. The issue is that with the vast range of security stores that can be used with our product line across the Web Application Servers we support, it is almost impossible to come up with a generic enough API to work across them. If you have a specific security store on a specific Web Application Server platform then there are simpler solutions. There are a number of ways of implementing this without providing functionality specific functionality: Oracle sells Identity Management software that offers common API's to manage passwords. You can purchase those products and link to the password change dialog in those products using Navigation Keys. If you are a customer using Oracle WebLogic, then there is a sample JSP's that can be linked to provide this functionality under Oracle TechNet (registration required) under Code Samples (project S20). These can be added as a Navigation Key to complete the functionality. This will allow end users to manage their own passwords. Obviously these are all samples and should be treated as customizations when you implement them. If you wish to understand Navigation Keys, then look at the Oracle Utilities Application Framework Integration Guidelines (Doc Id: 789060.1) available from My Oracle Support.

• Thoughts on web development architecture through integrating C++ in the future to a web application

  I'm looking to build a website (it's actually going to be a commercial startup) I saw this question and it really shed some light on a few things that I was hoping to understand (kudos to the op). After seeing that, it would make sense that, unless the website were required to actually have millions of hits per day, it wouldn't be a viable solution to write a C++ backend on the server side. But this got me thinking. what if it in the (unlikely) events of the future, it does go that route? The problem is that, while I'm thinking of starting this all using .Net (in the beginning) just to get something quick and easy up without a lot of hassle (in terms of learning), and then moving towards something more Open Source (such as Python/Django or RoR) later to save money and to support OSS, I'm wondering IFF the website actually becomes big, will it be a good idea to integrate a C++ backend, and use Python ontop of C++ for a strong foundation, and then mitigate HTML/CSS/AJAX/etc ontop of the backend's foundation? I guess, what I'd like to know is that, given the circumstance, if this were to happen, would it be a proper approach in terms of architecture? I'd definitely be supporting MVC as that seems to be a great way to implement a website. All in all, would one consider this rational, or are there other alternatives? I like .Net, and I'd like to use it in the beginning, because I have much more experience with that than, say, Python or PHP, and I prefer it in general, but I really do want to support OSS in the future. I suppose the sentence I'm looking for is, "is this pragmatic?"

• Out of sync audio / video on Hackintohs

  I have a PC with OSx86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

  I am curious as to why installing PlayOnLinux entails removing seemingly unrelated packages like google-earth-stable. Is this the expected behaviour? I've looked briefly at unattended, opsi and a bunch of stuff, but there is nowhere near enough time to evaluate them all, and they are rather complex to setup so some insight would be very appreciated. This is foremost for windows clients, but linux support would be good. Something like apt-get would've been great. Requirements: Simple to setup and use Set up groups of users (developers, management, sales, etc) Chose which software to be installed for different groups Add new software to groups and it will be automatically installed on client Dependencies between software Nice-to-have: Linux client support OS-unattended installation thanks in advance

• Alert for Forms customers running Oracle Forms 10g

  Doesn’t time fly!  While you might have been happily running your Forms 10g applications for about 5 years or so now, the end of premier support is creeping up and you need to start planning for a move to Oracle Forms 11g. The premier support end date in December 31st 2011 and this is documented in Note: 1290974.1 available from MOS. So how much of an impact is this going to be?  Maybe not as much as you think.  While Forms 11g is based on WebLogic Server (WLS),10g was based  on OC4J.  That in itself doesn’t impact Forms much.  In most case it will simply be a recompile of your Forms source files and redeploy on WLS 11g. The Forms builder is the same in 11g as in 10g although its currently not available as a separate download from the main middleware bundle.  You can also look at a WLS Basic license option which means you shouldn’t have to shell out on upgrading to a WLS Suite license option. So what’s the proof in this being a relatively straightforward upgrade?  Well, we’ve had a big uptake of Forms 11g already (which has itself been out for over 2 years).  Read about BT Expedite’s upgrade where “The upgrade of Forms from Oracle Forms 10g to Oracle Forms 11g was relatively simple and on the whole, was just a recompilation”.  Or AMEC where “This has been one of the easiest Forms conversions we’ve ever done and it was a simple recompile in all cases” So if you are on 10g (or even earlier versions) I’d strongly consider starting your planning for an upgrade to 11g now.     I have received these 2 ebooks from Packt Publkishing and I am currently reviewing them. Both of them look great so far.   Oracle Application Express 3.2 - The Essentials and More First of all, I have to mention that I am new to APEX. I was interested on this product which is a development tool for Web applications on the Oracle Database. As I support JDeveloper and ADF, which are products that work very closely with the Oracle Database and are a rapid development tool as well, it is always interesting and useful to know complementary tools. APEX looks very useful and the book includes many working examples. A more complete review of this book is coming soon. Further information about this book can be seen at Packt.   Oracle JRockit: The Definitive Guide Many of our Oracle Coherence customers run their caches and clusters using JRockit. This JVM has helped us to solve lots of Service Requests. It is a really reliable, fast and stable JVM. It works great on both development and production environments with big amounts of data, concurrency, multi-threading and many other factors that can make a JVM crash. I must also mention JRockit Mission Control (JRMC), which is a great tool for management and monitoring. I really recommend it. As a matter of fact, some months ago, I created a document entitled "How to Monitor Coherence-Based Applications using JRockit Mission Control" (Doc Id 961617.1) on My Oracle Support. Also, the JRockit Runtime Analyzer (JRA) and it successor of newer versions, the JRockit Flight Recorder (JFR) are deeply reviewed.   BIG Data – such a big word – everybody talks about this now a days. It is the word in the database world. In one of the conversation I asked my friend Jasjeet Sigh the same question – what is Big Data? He instantly came up with a very effective write-up.  Jasjeet is working as a Technical Manager with Koenig Solutions. He leads the SQL domain, and holds rich IT industry experience. Talking about Koenig, it is a 19 year old IT training company that offers several certification choices. Some of its courses include SharePoint Training, Project Management certifications, Microsoft Trainings, Business Intelligence programs, Web Design and Development courses etc. Big Data, as the name suggests, is about data that is BIG in nature. The data is BIG in terms of size, and it is difficult to manage such enormous data with relational database management systems that are quite popular these days. Big Data is not just about being large in size, it is also about the variety of the data that differs in form or type. Some examples of Big Data are given below : Scientific data related to weather and atmosphere, Genetics etc Data collected by various medical procedures, such as Radiology, CT scan, MRI etc Data related to Global Positioning System Pictures and Videos Radio Frequency Data Data that may vary very rapidly like stock exchange information Apart from difficulties in managing and storing such data, it is difficult to query, analyze and visualize it. The characteristics of Big Data can be defined by four Vs: Volume: It simply means a large volume of data that may span Petabyte, Exabyte and so on. However it also depends organization to organization that what volume of data they consider as Big Data. Variety: As discussed above, Big Data is not limited to relational information or structured Data. It can also include unstructured data like pictures, videos, text, audio etc. Velocity:  Velocity means the speed by which data changes. The higher is the velocity, the more efficient should be the system to capture and analyze the data. Missing any important point may lead to wrong analysis or may even result in loss. Veracity: It has been recently added as the fourth V, and generally means truthfulness or adherence to the truth. In terms of Big Data, it is more of a challenge than a characteristic. It is difficult to ascertain the truth out of the enormous amount of data and the one that has high velocity. There are always chances of having un-precise and uncertain data. It is a challenging task to clean such data before it is analyzed. Big Data can be considered as the next big thing in the IT sector in terms of innovation and development. If appropriate technologies are developed to analyze and use the information, it can be the driving force for almost all industrial segments. These include Retail, Manufacturing, Service, Finance, Healthcare etc. This will help them to automate business decisions, increase productivity, and innovate and develop new products. • Can Foswiki be used as a distributed Redmine replacement? [closed]

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. After checking http://www.wikimatrix.org for Wikis with integrated tracking system and RCS support, and filtering out seemingly stale project, the choices basically boil down to Foswiki, TWiki and Ikiwiki. The latter doesn't seem to offer as many usability features, and in the TWiki vs Foswiki issue I tend to the latter. Finally, there is Fossil, which starts from the other end by attempting to replace git entirely and tracking itself. I am however not too comfortable with the thought of replacing git, and Fossil's non-SCM features don't seem to be as developed. Now before I invest too much time when someone else might already have tried this, I basically have two questions: Are there crucial features of Project Management software like Redmine that Foswiki does not provide even with all the extensions available? How to set Foswiki up to use git instead of the perl RcsLite?

• Should I convert my AAC M4A files to MP3?

  Due to Apple, I have a large majority of my music files in the AAC M4A format. They do NOT have DRM so I don't have to worry about that. I'm getting tired of Apple products and really want to switch to a different brand player (and something more compatible with Linux). It appears most MP3 players support...well...MP3 and not AAC. Should I convert my library to be free of Apple and open to other players? Is this a lossless conversion? Can it be lossless? If I will lose quality, I'm not interested. Am I even doing the right thing? AAC is the better format, but I'm not seeing a lot of support for it yet. I'll be honest and say that I need some education in this department. Any helpful advice is most welcome.

• Easy Deployment Split Tunnel VPN Connection

  I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight as to how I can mass deploy VPN connection settings that support split tunneling. It has to work on both Mac and Windows systems though if a script is used, it obviously can be 2 separate scripts for both platforms. I will be setting up a Windows server with a file server and Exchange server and to access the file server I will have the clients go through VPN because we will have sensitive data. I don't want the servers network to be bogged down with the clients normal internet traffic so I will be needing some way to setup split tunneling on the clients without them having to put in a few commands every time to setup the static routes. Ive looked at Cisco VPN client but I want to try and stick with windows RRAS and avoid buying a Cisco VPN endpoint. Im basically looking for a good VPN client that can support split tunneling and mass deployment.

• Weblogic - Dynamic Clustering in practice by Andy Overton

  The latest version of Weblogic (12.1.2) includes support for Dynamic Clustering. For more details on what else is new in 12.1.2 see my previous blog post. In this blog post I will look at setting up a dynamic cluster on 2 machines with 4 managed servers (2 on each). I will then deploy an application to the cluster and show how to expand the cluster. What is a dynamic cluster? A dynamic cluster is any cluster that contains one or more dynamic servers. Each server in the cluster will be based upon a single shared server template. The server template allows you to configure each server the same and ensures that servers do not need to be manually configured before being added to the cluster. This allows you to easily scale up or down the number of servers in your cluster without the need for setting up each server manually.
