  • Rails: Best practice to store user settings?

    Hi, I'm wondering what the best way is to store user settings? For a web 2.0 app I want users to be able to select certain settings. At the moment is it only when to receive email notifications. The easiest way would be to just create a Model "Settings" and have a column for every setting and then have a 1-1 relationship with users. But is there a pattern to solve this better? Is it maybe better to store the info in the user table itself? Or should I use a table with "settings_name" and "settings_value" to be completely open about the type of settings stored there (without having to run any migrations when adding options)? What is your opinion? Thanks

  • Graphing per-user CPU usage on a Linux machine

    I want to graph (graphical output would be great, i.e. a .png file) the following situation: I have users A, B, and C. I limit their resources so that when all users run a CPU intensive task at the same time, those processes will use 25%, 25%, and 50% of CPU. I know I can get the real-time stats using top but have no idea what to do with them. I've searched through the huge top man page but haven't found much on the subject of outputting data that can be graphed. Ideally, the graph would show a span of maybe 30 seconds. Any ideas how to achieve this?

    Trying to write a deployment script, working on a repo in a different path. The "git-dir" flag seems to work fine for most commands, but not for submodule work. Am I missing a path directive? Works: git --git-dir=/tmp/repo_path/.git log Doesn't work: git --git-dir=/tmp/repo_path/.git submodule init Error: No submodule mapping found in .gitmodules for path 'path_to/submodule' Much thanks for any help.

    I have a user control that wraps a grid. I want to be able to set the underlying grid's data source, but through the user control, like this: <my:CustomGrid DataSource="{Binding Path=CollectionView}" /> I have set this up in the grid like this: private static readonly DependencyProperty DataSourceProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("DataSource", typeof(IEnumerable), typeof(CustomGrid)); public IEnumerable DataSource { get { return (IEnumerable)GetValue(DataSourceProperty); } set { SetValue(DataSourceProperty, value); underlyingGrid.DataSource = value; } } But this doesn't work (it doesn't give me an error either). The data source is never set. What am I missing?

    I have a path for example C:\files\dir\file.css The "files" directory exists. however, the dir directory is missing and needs to be created. When I try to create the file using File.Create, it throws an exception saying that the directory was not found. Is there any way to make .net to create the missing folders along the path for me?     I'm a novice at JSF and I got a couple of questions concerning organizing user authentication there. 1) How can i redirect the registered user to a welcome page (for example welcome.xhtml)? I heard about using Filter or navigation-rule tag, but i didn't found a full-blown tutorial of how it works. 2) How can i tell the server that unauthorized users can access not only the login page but also the registration page? Is there an analog for ASP.NET web.config tag or something like this?

    Is there a way to modify the bat file from this post here: How do I set the desktop background on Windows from a script? so that it will randomly select 1 background image from a folder containing multiple images??? AND I would also like the background to randomly change to one of the backgrounds randomly contained in the same folder.     at my 450gb fat32 partition, a directory has a wrong content after improper usb drive disconnect; was: /files (total 250gb) /files/folder/ /files/folder2/ /files/somethn.gs Now: /files/weir?d?name, 5 mb Windows and Linux are saying that most (400 of 450gb) disk space is occupied, but sum of all files/dirs is about 130gb, so it seems that files are still there?. No write attempts since discovery; Rejected tools/methods: chkdsk(Windows7): checking completed, but no changes. fsck.vfat: attempted to ruin drive even more (there is a lot of LFN and unicode names). EasyRecovery. Didn't see the target folder (maybe wrong scan options? tried best match, but not raw scan - it would take days since the drive is usb 5200 rpm..).

    I am using active directory in windows server 2008 R2 having IP address is 10.10.10.10 and my DSL modem Ip is 10.10.10.101. All clients are using 10.10.10.101 default gw to access the Internet. I don't know who is using Torrent in network or downloading something via IDM or something else. I just want to Monitor my clients for who are download via torrent or whatever. Is there anything in Windows Server 2008r2 that would allow me to do this monitoring, or do I need something else?

  • Debian/Linux backup files changed by user

    I would like to backup my server that is hosting a few websites in such a way that I can restore everything to the way it was from a fresh format. I know that I should backup all the home folders and then probably my /etc/ folders. Is there a way to figure out all the folders that are relevant for backup in that they were not automatically generated or installed from apt-get? It would ideally restore all the users with their current passwords as well. Basically, enough to clone the system but only copying configuration files.

  • Design best practice - best way to handle user selection

    I'm an experienced developer (WPF) moving over to Android development. My question: an app I am developing allows the user to browse their local storage (such as SDCARD) and select a file. Now, should I simply create a new Activity (after the user has made a selection) to handle what I want to have the app do with that chosen file, -or- is the better approach to pass the path/name of the selected file back to the main Activity and let IT launch the next Activity? In other words, is the better practice to have the main Activity launch other (support) activities, or is it perfectly ok and normal to have one activity chain to another and on and on? Thanks!

    Hi, Whats the best way to ensure the user has entered a valid time string such as: 5:24 5.4 102:30 102.5 It will be entered into a UITextField therefore will be in a NSString. I want to allow the user to enter the time in either hours and minutes (hh:mm) or hours and decimal minutes (hh.m). In the hours minutes example they should be able to enter as many hours as the like but only between 0 - 59 minutes. With the hours decimal minutes I want them to only be able to enter again as many hours as the like but decimal minutes can only be 0 - 9. Many Thanks

  • How to rename the original file before sending it to user

    Actually I have some download link on my website something like "http://www.example.com/somesong.mp3". Now when user click on this link they get somesong.mp3 but I want to change it before they download. I found many scripts that made it possible but didn't get exact right script. Because I want that when the user clicks on download link the file downloading should be started just after the click with the new file name as I want to use. But in all the scripts which I downloaded, first the php processing starts for a few minute (I think it depends on the file size) and then rename it. Is there a way to direct force the file in header with new file name. Thanks.

    I'm learning about PHP sessions for user authentication on my website. I know how to restrict the viewing of a complete page using sessions (simply check if the 'uid' session variable is set and if it is, show content, if not redirect to an error). However I'm trying to figure out the best way to selectively show and hide different objects (div, text, images) based on if a user is logged in or not. Is it as simple as checking for the 'uid' session variable and displaying based on if it set or not? Is there a more efficient way of doing this id there are a lot of conditional elements on a page?
