• List.ForEach method and collection interfaces

  In .NET 3.5 List< gains a ForEach method. I notice this does not exist on IList< or IEnumerable< what was the thinking here? Is there another way to do this? Nice and simple short way to do this? I ask because I was at a talk where the speaker said always use the more general interfaces. But why would I use IList< as a return type if I want to be able to turn around and use ForEach? Then I would just end up casting it back to a List<.

• How to add javascript to YII correctly?

  I want to create several javascript function that will be needed on different pages. Most will be relevant only to one page, but some to several. I know if I add general conversion functions, it would be a good idea to just create a new javascript file and put all these generic functions into that one file. Bringing me to my first question: Where would you store the generic javascript file? In "protected"? Which subfolder? Then, I need to address the placement of other javascript code. If I have javascript that will only be used on one page, should I use this technique or should I stick to a similar approach as above? The emphasis is on doing it correctly. I want to fall exactly in line with the yii framework.

  I want to define an operator<< for all enums, to cout the value and print that it is an enum like this: code: enum AnyEnum{A,B,C}; AnyEnum enm = A; cout << enm <<endl; output: This is an enum which has a value equal to 0 I know a way of doing this with Boost library by using is_enum struct. But I don’t understand how it works. So that's why, in general, I am interested how to identify if the veriable is a class type, union type or an enum (in compile time).

• RESTful web service, PUTting an unnamed resource?

  I have a back-end service that creates unique identifiers for resources. The general idea is that resources are saved and versioned, so you can perform: GET http://service/sales/targets/7818181919/latest or GET http://service/sales/targets/7818181919/4 for version 4, and so on. My question is about the most correct way to upload these resources in the first place. How about: PUT http://service/sales/targets/ returning 303 See other /service/sales/targets/ It seems a little wrong as you should PUT and GET from exactly the same place using a resource-oriented interface, but I can't think of a better option. Any ideas?

• best way to use CoreLocation across multiple views

  I have two views in my app, one is a general view where CoreLocation works away calculating the users location while the user is doing other stuff in the view. The second view is accessed by the user when they touch a button allowing them to locate themselves more accurately using a mapview and MapKit, i would like the mapview in this view to show the location that CoreLocation has already identified in the first view AND to continue displaying this location based on updates from CoreLocation in the other view. Is the best way here to create a singleton that encapsulates the CoreLocation stuff and have this referenced in the view with the map, or to use notifications ? or to use some other better practice for my scenario ?   I have ExtJS based application. I have compound object on the server side, and have ExtJS window with few tabs for editing different parts of this one object. For example: I Have Compound object "Car" public class Car { public string Name; public string Color; public List Wheels; public List Doors; } And on my ExtJS window i have tabs ("General Info", "Wheels", "Doors") for editing different parts of this object. So what i want: When i want to create a new car i want to generate JSON configuration for my class "Car" like {Name:null; Color:null; Wheels:[]; Doors:[]} then sent it to the client, fill it on the client (without callbacks to server) and after user finishes creating his Car object (he added wheels, doors, set name and color) and press save, I want to sent this filled(generated) JSON object to server and save it to DB. • Is map/collection order stable between calls?

  If I have a hash map and iterate over the objects repeatedly, is it correct that I'm not guaranteed the same order for every call? For example, could the following print two lines that differ from each other: Map<String,Integer> map = new HashMap<String,Integer>() {{ put("a", 1); put("b", 2); put("c", 3); }}; System.out.println(map); System.out.println(map); And is this the case for sets and collections in general? If so, what's the best way in case you have to iterate twice over the same collection in the same order (regardless of what order that is)? I guess converting to a list.

• link_to syntax with rails3 (link_to_remote) and basic javascript not working in a rails3 app?

  i am wondering if the basic link_to syntax is completely broken in current rails3 master or if i am doing some wrong syntax here. = link_to "name", nil, :onlick => "alert('Hello world!');" should actually produce an alert on click. very simple. does not work on my rails3 project! (also no error output!) any ideas? for the general link_to syntax i could not find an example where i could combine a link_to_remote with a confirmation, remote and html class (see my try below) = link_to "delete", {:action => "destroy", :remote => true, :method => :delete, :confirm => "#{a.title} wirklich L&ouml;schen?" }, :class => "trash" even the rails3 api does not help me here: http://rails3api.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html help!

• iqueryable select/where not working

  I have two tables Boxer and Prospect. Boxers has general stuff like name and and dob etc and a BoxerId While Prospect contains only one value (at the moment) which is a boxerId. If a boxer is a prospect(up and coming boxer) there Id will be in the prospect table. This works fine but now I want to select all boxers that are prospects public static IQueryable<Boxer> IsProspect(this IQueryable<Boxer> query) { //this does not filter down to only prospects!!! return query.Where(x => x.Prospect != null); } This is the function I call using: var repository = GetRepository<Boxer>(); var boxers = repository.Query().IsProspect(); I would hope this would filter my collection of all boxers down to just boxers that are prospects! Oddly it doesnt filter it but if i hover over my boxers object and look at each boxer during debugging I can see "IsProspect" true or false correctly

  I come across code such as "personObj=new Object();" where a new object called personObj is being defined. What I'm trying to find out is whether Object() is a prefined function in javascript, because I understand by using the mentioned code, a instance of a class is being formed but in the example code where I'm studying from, the class Object() is not being defined anywhere, so I was wondering if Object() was a predefined function in javascript and whether I can be directed to some online resources, as all that shows up in google when I try to find Object() are articles in general javascript object oriented programming.

  Suppose I have variables $x1 = 'XX a b XX c d XX'; $x2 = 'XX a b XX c d XX e f XX'; I want a regular expression that will find each instance of letters between XX. I'm looking for a general solution, because I don't know how many XX's there are. I tried using /XX(.*?)XX/g but this only matches "a b" for x1 and "a b", "e f" for x2 because once the first match is found, the engine has already read the second "XX". Thanks for any help.

  I have a set of items, for example: {1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3}, and a restricting set of sets, for example {{3},{1,2},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{2,3},{2,3}. I am looking for permutations of items, but the first element must be 3, and the second must be 1 or 2, etc. One such permutation that fits is: {3,1,1,1,2,2,3} Is there an algorithm to count all permutations for this problem in general? Is there a name for this type of problem? For illustration, I know how to solve this problem for certain types of "restricting sets". Set of items: {1,1,2,2,3}, Restrictions {{1,2},{1,2,3},{1,2,3},{1,2},{1,2}}. This is equal to 2!/(2-1)!/1! * 4!/2!/2!. Effectively permuting the 3 first, since it is the most restrictive and then permuting the remaining items where there is room.

  I've been reading the javadocs trying to grasp around the swing Document API but I cant get something sensible out of it because there's so many classes: Document, StyledDocument, AbstractDocument, DefaultStyledDocument, PlainDocument, HTMLDocument, and someone mentioned DocumentFilter. This question is more on a general basis so can someone give an overview of the differences between the implementations and when the different interfaces and abstracts are for? For my specific case what I want to achieve is a data structure that will: hold three lines of text only. And attributes must not be per line or document. I will have a couple of thousand of these in some other structure so overhead is important. Anything that i can use for this or is it better to extend something? If so, what?

  I'm trying to get (and prove) 100% test coverage for some code I'm writing in Haskell using HPC. However if I write something like this: fac n | n > 0 = n * (fac (n - 1)) | otherwise = 1 Then the second expression of the guard statement has always True tagged to it. What is the easiest way to overcome this in the general case? edit: Just to clarify. This code: fac n = if n > 0 then n * (fac (n - 1)) else 1 Works fine with HPC, (running it gives 100% code coverage).   Was wondering if anyone could help me with creating a pseudocode for how to go about dividing n-bit binary integers. Here is what I'm thinking could possibly work right now, could someone correct this if I'm wrong: divide (x,y) if x=0: return (0,0) //(quotient, remainder) (q,r) = divide(floor(x/2), y) q=2q, r=2r if x is odd: r = r+1 if r >= y: r = r-y, q = q+1 return (q,r) Would you guys say that this general pseudocode algorithm would accomplish the intended task of dividing n-bit numbers or am I missing something in my psuedocode before I start coding up something that's wrong?

  hi, i have a general design question. we have a fairly big data model that represents an clinical object, the object itself has 200+ child attributes in the hierarchy. and we have a SetObject operation, and a GetObject operation. my question is, best practice wise, would it make sense to use that single data model in both operations or different data model for each? Because the Get operation will return much more details than what's needed for Set. an example of what i mean: the data model has say ProviderId, and ProviderName attributes, in the Get operation, both the ProviderId, and ProviderName would need to be returned. However, in the Set operation, only the ProviderId is needed, and ProviderName is ignored by the service since system has that information already. In this case, if the Get and Set operations use the same data model, the ProviderName is exposed even for Set operation, does that confuse the consuming developer?

• Beginners PHP / mySQL question

  I'm brand new to PHP & MySQL, and one function I'm creating needs to access a large table or database. I've created the database and it's currently in a MySQL table, which I'm accessing with no problem. The table is 11,000 rows in length, with 8 columns (all text less than 8 characters long) - it's static, and will never change. Without getting too particular, my users will hit a button which will trigger scripts to access the data, say 500 times or more. So in general would it be better practice to include all of this data in a big 'switch' or 'if... then' conditional right in my scripts, rather than opening and accessing the database connection hundreds, or maybe even thousands of times? It just seems like that might be a bottleneck waiting to happen. Thanks!

• Add 64 bit offset to a pointer

  In F#, there's the NativePtr module, but it seems to only support 32 bit offsets for its’ add/get/set functions, just like System.IntPtr does. Is there a way to add a 64 bit offset to a native pointer (nativeptr<'a) in F#? Of course I could convert all addresses to 64 bit integers, do normal integer operations and then convert the result again to nativeptr<'a, but this would cost additional add and imul instructions. I really want the AGUs to perform the address calculations. For instance, using unsafe in C# you could do something like void* ptr = Marshal.AllocHGlobal(...).ToPointer(); int64 offset = ...; T* newAddr = (T*)ptr + offset; // T has to be an unmanaged type Well actually you can't, because there is no "unmanaged" constraint for type parameters, but at least you can do general pointer arithmetic in a non-generic way. In F# we finally got the unmanaged constraint; but how do I do the pointer arithmetic?
