• trying to install Mumble on centos

  I am trying to install mumble on my CentOS vps following these directions: http://www.hosting.com/support/linux/install-the-mumble-voip-server-to-redhat-or-centos When I get to this line: rpm2cpio mumble-server-1.2.2-3mdv2011.0.x86_64.rpm > file.lzma lzma -d file.lzma I am getting this error: root@vps-1112788-12524 [/home/~~~~/mumble]# rpm2cpio mumble-1.2.4-0.20120422.1-mdv2012.0.x86_64.rpm > file.lzma root@vps-1112788-12524 [/home/~~~~/mumble]# lzma -d file.lzma lzma: file.lzma: File format not recognized I did update the name of the file since the link they gave me was not available. I got the new rpm from the same place: http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=mumble+server&submit=Search+... I'm new to Linux so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. • PureFTPd : ChrootEveryone not working

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 with pure-ftpd version 1.0.35-1. I don't use database for the only user I have (ftpuser1 - localuser), but I want to lock him into his home directory. /ftp/ftpuser1 is the home dir of ftpuser1. /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/ChrootEveryone has the yes string and in /etc/default/pure-ftpd-common VIRTUALCHROOT is set to false, but ftpuser1 can freely walk around. My startup line for pure-ftpd looks like this : /usr/sbin/pure-ftpd -l pam -A -8 UTF-8 -O clf:/var/log/pure-ftpd/transfer.log -u 1000 -E -B So there is the "-A" in it for the ChrootEveryone.

• Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously.   I want to create a custom Xmonad session that loads an .xsession script in my home folder. This is the original file I copied. This one works: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=xmonad Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession This is my modified file, xmonad-custom.desktop. When I logout, then login choosing this "xmonad-custom", the screen just flashes and sends me back to the ubuntu login screen (as if it briefly logs in and out of the session): [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Custom Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/{username}/.xsession Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm I also tried without the last line. • What is the proper SEO handling of pages appearing in popups using IFRAMEs?

  I am working on a CMS which makes use of IFRAMEs to display some forms, for illustration, say a Search form. So the user clicks the Search button and the website reacts by opening a popup window which includes an IFRAME to the actual Search form. This means I have a "bare"¹ page with the search form. Page which, obviously, is directly accessible via its own URI. In terms of SEO, the forms have no content worthy of being indexed, so I was thinking to mark them as NOINDEX. Is that the correct way to handle such pages? From what I read on some other question, Google suggests to put links from IFRAMEs to other pages. However, I definitively do not want a user visible link to the Home page, or whatever page in link with the form, in the content of my forms because that could be misinterpreted by the user. However, if <link> tags would work too, which one should I use? (i.e. "top" would work, right? with the home page in there?) ¹ By bare I mean that the normal theme is not show, it will be a plain white background with just and only the simplest form.

• Wireless Network Connection gets dropped at times under Windows 7

  I have running Windows 7 on my hp laptop with 802.11n wifi adapter. Some times, I lost wireless internet connection. Under the 'Wireless Connection' when I click the notification area, it said 'my home network is 'connected'... But in the header 'currently Connected to' it said 'no internet access' instead of 'internet access' I can 'fix' my problem by going to the 'wireless connection' my home network, click 'disconnect' and then click 'connect'. And when it comes back up, it gets connected again. any idea how can i fix this problem? Thank you.

• Problems with icons and shutting down Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently upgraded from 11-10 to 12.04 as a dual boot (Windows 7) and am having problems with shutting down. I installed from a CD that I burned from the iso file, and to get it to boot from the CD, I needed to install the special help program from Windows that would then recognize the CD as the system booted.The installation gave me my own user account as well as a guest account. For the User account there is no "gear" icon (in the upper RH side) from which to access the shut down menu. Interestingly the icons for the Home folder, the Ubuntu One folder, and the System Settings folder are missing, although there are blank places shows these names if the mouse cursor is positioned over these areas. They will even launch with the press of a key - but no icons are visible. For the Guest account, all of these icons are visible and usable. The problem that occurs in shutting down is that I need to leave the User account, move to the Guest account (so that I can access the top right "gear" icon that has the shut down menu item) and press the shut down button. The problem here is that when the shut own menu appears and I press the confirmation that I wish to shut down the computer, the page blanks (as one might hope in the process of closing down), and then pops up with the log in menu, giving the option of logging in as a User or as a Guest. So the questions are: 1) how do you reinstate the far right top icon from which you can access the shut down drop down menu in the User account page. 2) how do you get the icons to display properly on the Left hand side (Home, Ubuntu One, System Settings, and Workspace Switcher) 3) how do you get the system to turn of when you press the shut down button! • What does a red icon in XP's "Unlock Computer" dialog mean?

  A user was working from home and had a colleague turn on her computer so she could remote desktop to it. All worked fine, but when she came into the office and used her computer for a while then locked it the computer icon had a red screen, instead of blue. Like in the following mockup: Mockup of red computer screen. It didn't cause any problems and it went away when she rebooted, but I was intrigued to find out whether there was something that caused it or if it was just a windows oddity. I believe she just closed the remote desktop session (without really logging off) from home and then disconnected from the VPN before coming to the office. Any ideas?

• Backup Linux Root Partition (Fedora 12)

  I setup my partition scheme to have an extra partition the size of my / partion. I have a separate home directory partition. Essentially, I will be doing things that might make my OS unstable so I'd like to backup the OS state but without bothering my home directory. Can I just backup (maybe with dd?) my root partition to another partition on the HDD? I know to restore it I would have to boot up with a livecd or something and do the reverse procedure. I want this to be as simple and require the least amount of external hardware as possible.

• Sending mail to local address crashes web server (sendmail)

  When trying to send mail automatically from a script at example.com via PHP's mail() to [email protected], the Apache server throws an Internal Error. I believe internally it is configured to use sendmail. The message gets dropped into ~/dead.letter and the general error log reads: [Wed May 12 11:26:45 2010] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] malformed header from script. Bad header=/home/example/dead.letter... S: /home/example/www/test.php Trying any other address, not @example.com, works just fine. I have googled and serverfaulted for solutions, but they all require to edit configuration files in /etc/mail and similar system places, which is not an option, since this problem occurs on a shared host in which I only have access to ~/. Does anyone have a suggestion?

• IP Camera working on lan but not on internet

  My IP cam model is Genius 350TR, I tested the cam at home on lan and internet and it worked. Then I shifted it to an office. It works on the office lan setup but I cannot connect to the ip cam from home. The IP cam is configured for port 192.168.0.30:7070 and it has a port forwarded to publicIP:7071 When I telnet to that public IP it connects to that port. However when I try to access the ip cam from a web browser it only shows me the configuration page and settings and the video is blank and it says connecting for some time and then says disconnected. The cam is configured for HTTP on internet and UDP on Lan. The office setup is ISP --- WifiRouter --- PC With Wifi card --- Switch --- IP CAM Is there a way to debug this problem?

• Blank desktop when logging in via xrdp

  I am trying to access Ubuntu 11.10 using Remote Desktop from a Win 7 machine. I installed xrdp. I launch the Windows remote desktop client and login in. I then get prompted for the user name and password. It then logs in, but all I see is the background, no menus, nothing. I have to kill remote desktop by closing it. Even if I right click , nothing. Any ideas??? The only reason I even went down the RDP road was that VNC would not work either, even after I enabled desktop sharing. I am in a bind as I need to connect to Ubuntu via Windows. In version 8 Ubuntu this was not an issue and it just worked.

• Can't access website on local network

  I have a personal website running on my PC (Ubuntu), connected to the internet through a router. I can connect without any problem to my website when I'm not at home so I guess my router is correctly configured but whem I try to access the site using a local adress at home (192.168.XX.XX), it times out after 30 seconds or so. What tool could I use to find out where is the problem? I have tried a tracert command on my Windows PC but add just a useless line. If it's of any help, my website is running on Tomcat 6 but I don't think the problem is here as it would be weird that the server would be configured to be accessible from the internet but not the local network.

Can someone help me? This is driving me insane! EDIT: for lspci -nn | grep 0280: 03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4353] (rev 01) I can see the networks available, but when I try to connect, it gets stuck in a loop: tries to connect, fails, tries again, fails again and so on... EDIT 2: After a long break from this problem, I've just run a few tests again and found out that, although my macbuntu still fails to connect to my home wi-fi network, it works just fine at my university... Does that help in anyway? My home network is managed by a dual-band (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) 802.11n cisco e4200 wi-fi router.

While I was using Windows it was very useful for me to find out the IP address of the person who was downloading from me, or to know IP address of any person on LAN who was using DC++ with some nick. And after that I can easily know the computer name of that person using nbtstat. I was wondering if there is any tool for Ubuntu using which I can find out the IP address of person who is downloading from me or from whom I am downloading on LAN. I am on university LAN and we are using PtokaX and DC++ for file sharing on LAN. people sometimes put some offencive stuff on open chat on DC++ using some Nick and I don't know how to trace them while I am using Ubuntu.

  On my server the filesystem includes these partitions: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda6 4.6G 929M 3.5G 21% / /dev/sda5 76M 20M 53M 27% /boot /dev/sda8 449G 199M 426G 1% /home /dev/sda7 4.6G 4.4G 0 100% /var (Output from df -ah) I'm storing the web sites and databases under /var and as you can see it's got full. The /home folder just has basic user directories and nothing else so I'd like to repartition the server so that /dev/sda8 is about 5GB, with the rest going to dev/sda7. What's the easiest way to do this via command line (i.e. SSH)?
