• Remote connection to dynamic public ip & private ip addresses

  Many times I connected to windows computer which has static public ip address via remote desktop over wan links. I'm wondering how could I connect to the remote computer that has dynamic public ip address & private ip addresses assigned. I've 2 systems at home: xp system-------connected to internet(dynamic public ip) & allowed other users to connected to the internet on the interface. windows vista system--------enabled dhcp on the interface to access internet from xp. How could I remotely connect from my office to the 'vista system'?. If I've a router/modem at my home it may be possible to allow the ports for the system but I don't. Any tips?

  I was enjoying a Movie when my Ubuntu suddenly hung. At the next reboot, here is the message: One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: /home: waiting for /dev/disk/by-uuid/.... Press ESC to enter a recovery shell. Problems: When I enter recovery shell, I don't know that to do. If I press Ctrl+D, then the message above will reappear. What should I do? I checked with Ubuntu Live CD and my partition looks OK. I have 2 separate partitions for / and /home

• Trying to script rsync using pam_exec

  I'm trying to write a bash script that will execute rsync when called by pam_exec. I've tried a couple different ways, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. When I try to run the script at login by adding session optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/local/sync.sh to my sshd file, it gives me an exit code of 12. if I log in and then manually run my script, it allows me to connect to the remote server, and it lists my files, but it doesn't actually sync anything. I have tried the code below using buth $USER and $PAM_USER. $PAM_USER doesn't work at all. #!/bin/sh rsync -azv -e ssh $USER@remote_server:/home/html/$USER/ /home/html/$USER

• Ubuntu 12.04 suddenly will not boot after compiz crash on lockscreen

  Yesterday i went to work and closed my laptop. When i got home I couldn't get the lock screen to come back up. ctrl+alt+f2 to get to a terminal and Tried to kill compiz, compiz was not running so I tried to restart it got an error opening the display so i tried to restart lightdm again couldn't open display. so I restarted and now I am stuck on the loading screen. I tried booting in recovery mode and all options hang except root, but i'm stuck with read only. booting from a live cd I can mount the drive but again stuck with read only. I'm completely stuck here. checking my default-display-manager returns "/usr/sbin/elsa" as the only line and can't edit it. I've got an 11.10 live cd and my /home is encrypted so i can't try to back anything up at the moment either. How can i resolve this or at the least back up some of my data? Please help!

• Removing perl module installed with cpanm

  I am Perl beginner. I wanted to use Log::Log4perl module as I am familiar how it works in Java. I used cpanm script to download module, but I ran it without "sudo". Then it installed this module to my dir /home/amer/perl5. Afterwards, I installed it as sudoer, but I want to remove installation in my home dir to avoid any conflicts in future. How can I do that? • I made a game in XNA - how can I share it with my friends?

  I've just finished programming a charming (albeit bare-bones) XNA version of arcade classic Tempest. Hooray! Given that this was a homework assignment, I'd like to be able to share it with my professor and my friends/classmates to solicit feedback. (And let's be honest - if I have a question about how to add in an additional feature, it might be nice to be able to share it with folks on this site as well.) Is there a better way of sharing an XNA game than by shuttling the visual studio - produced executable around? Some way to host it on a website would be ideal.

• DSL vs Cable latency

  currently I have a 10Mbps DSL line and I'm thinking to switch to a cable since they got 100Mbps for a little less than double the price I'm paying for 10Mbps. In other words the cable company is offering 100Mbps for the price of 20Mbps DSL. Since 10Mbps is more than enough for me I am worried about the latency, I saw this that is just a guy experiment, that shows that cable and DSL are the same in practical terms, and this but I couldn't grasp it, not sure if it is helpful. So my question is if there's any practical difference between cable and DSL, mainly in latency terms but I would be also interested in other advantages/disadvantages. This is for my home connection, I work from home but I don't run any server, I most of the time code, skype and eventually game.

• host and share files in my hosting

  I currently have a domain+hosting with unlimited hosting space for our website. On the other hand, I use Dropbox to share our organizational files and photos between about 10 users. The thing is that sharing photos uses too much space for what a free Dropbox account offers. So I am thinking of taking advantage of my hosting space, but using FTP seems not to be ideal for users who are not too skilled with computers. In addition, it doesn't handle versions in case some user makes a mess of it. And using a public FTP to upload and giving them only download permission doesn't seem a good idea as I am only the CTO. So what I want is basically to implement a local Dropbox for a few users, but I'd prefer something that is not too complex to install/mantain. Thank you a lot.

• System boots in console + login loop

  I messed up my system while trying to fix permission problems for setting up a LAMP local server. I tried this solution: How to avoid using sudo when working in /var/www? without success. Then I saw this solution: Permissions issue: how can Apache access files in my Home directory? I understood that I had to change the permissions of my root directory (among others), so I executed: sudo chmod 710 / I also changed the user group on / to www-data. I also did these operations on /home. I'm pretty sure one of those commands broke something, because it's the last commands I executed, and after that, my system showed strange/broken behavior: Firefox stopped showing pages Some icons got replaced by an red X icon (meaning "Icon not found" I guess) Applications refused to launch (no reaction) After rebooting: I got a strange graphical message talking about not being able to mount something, asking me if I wanted to wait, and talking about /tmp (I forgot the message since I was in shock) My system now boots in console, and when I login, it flashes unsignificant stuff* before re-asking me to login. My important data is on Ubuntu One. I'd prefer not having to reinstall from scratch. Is there a way to regain access to my system? Thanks a lot for your help. *Looks like a terminal header with the name of the OS and other info. Doesn't seem important.

• Unable to connect to network

  Hey guys, I have a question. I have been having problems connecting a new netbook to my network at home. I have an Asus Eeepc 100HAB. I have tried to run a repair on the connection, uninstalled and re-installed the network card, made sure all of the drivers are up-to-date as well. Two caveats: I have a laptop that I recently switched to a wired connection because it wasn't connecting to the network as well, and the netbook connects to an unsecured network i found just fine, only having a problem getting into my home network. Passwords are correct, and the computer where the connection originates from is working fine as well. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu, user can't write to a directory and I don't see why not.

  I've got a directory, /var/www/someProject/backup/mysql, and I want the user mysql to write to it. Each time I try to write to it with the mysql user, I get a "can't read/write" error. Yet the directory is 777 as you can see here: drwxrwxrwx 2 aUser users 4096 2010-03-17 17:14 mysql I also tried to chown the directory to mysql:mysql, just like the home dir of the mysql user, but no luck, that changed nothing. What am I doing wrong here? Or is the mysql user limited to his home dir in some other way in Ubuntu? Been bugging me for days now, this problem so any help greatly appreciated.

  There are two Ubuntu PCs called A and B. A and B are connected to the Internet using two separated Internet connections. (In my case, two mobile broadband connections ppp0 x2 ) Each connection has a unique & static public IP address. What I need is to control A computer's cursor, using B computer's mouse, over the Internet. In both computers, I have allowed other users to control my computer in Desktop Sharing preferences, as below: When I try to connect to A from the B using Remmina Remote Desktop Client, it refuses to connect after trying for a while. These are my settings: I expect this to be done from an available open source software, not from TeamViewer. I found this guide harder to understand. Please provide me clear instructions... • Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

  I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. The hard drive in question is this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4846365). I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

I was searching a site which can tell the income source details for European developer (specially for Belgium). But mostly not a single website exist who tells the true. My situation: As a programmer myself in one company i use all my knowledge, 20++ hours a day (office , home, office, home) because every-time its challenge/complex/stress/over-time feature-requests, at the end of the year in Europe i was getting in total not even the lowest amount shown here (UK pound vs Euro + high-tech most of the time they use + speed in development): http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/ In one company i have to use my best performance knowledge for whole year with: C, Java, PHP (Zend Framework, Cakephp), BASH, MySQL/DB2, Linux/Unix, Javascript, Dojo, JQuery, Css, Html, Xml.   Quick background: We have 40 workstations running Linux. NFS is used extensively for bulk data storage and home directories. This allows users to roam freely will relatively transparent file systems. This is an educational environment where postdocs and students have successfully pulled off a coup of sorts. All have gained root on their individual workstations by grooming a technophobic PI who thinks IT people are evil. If I so much as suggest chroot or sudo restrictions, I'll find myself working out of a broom closet. I have already done some end projects: Small Java Platform Game A Small Polynomial Solver A Small Image Sharing Site A Chess Website: chesslounge.net I am currently doing some Android Development and so far I have made a program that Vibrates, Blinks the Light, or Creates a custom status message based on the user input. And a program that rotates a pyramid with a texture. My question is: Should I stick to what I am doing or Learn something a little new? I am itching to do C++, but what is your advice?

  Hello, world!, I have a VPS set up with multiple domain names pointing to it. Arbitrarily, I like to access it via SSH through the domain name I'm dealing with. So for example, if I'm doing something with example1.com, I'll log in with ssh [email protected], and if I'm working with example2.com, I'll log in with ssh [email protected]. They both point to the same user on the same machine. However, because SSH keeps track of the server's fingerprint, it tells me that there is an offending host key, and makes me confirm access. $ ssh [email protected] Warning: the ECDSA host key for 'example2.com' differs from the key for the IP address '123.123.123.123' Offending key for IP in /home/me/.ssh/known_hosts:33 Matching host key in /home/me/.ssh/known_hosts:38 Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? Is there a way to ignore this warning? Thanks!
