• Can I use Visual Studio 2010's compiler with Visual Studio 2008's Runtime Library?

  Hello everyone :) I have an application that needs to operate on Windows 2000. I'd also like to use Visual Studio 2010 (mainly because of the change in the definition of the auto keyword). However, I'm in a bit of a bind because I need the app to be able to operate on older OS's, namely: Windows 2000 Windows XP RTM Windows XP SP1 Visual Studio 2010's runtime library depends on the EncodePointer / DecodePointer API which was introduced in Windows XP SP2. If using the alternate runtime library is possible, will this break code that relies on C++0x features added in VS2010, like std::regex?

• Sencha Touch 2: List does not display in Panel

  I am working on an MVC app in Sencha Touch 2 and am having trouble getting a list to display in a nested panel. The structure of the app has a main view which is a tab panel. One of the items in the tab panel is a defined panel, xtype: 'homepanel'. An item in this panel is the list, xtype: 'newslist' that is linked to the appropriate store and model files. The list does not display unless I change its parent 'homepanel' to a type, Ext.navigation.View. What am I missing in the definition of 'homepanel' as a Panel that prevents the display of the list? • Implement a vpn

  I want to build an application client(client.exe) - server to do the following: when the clients run it they are thrown in a VPN and they can communicate each other within 1 applicataion. For example : clients run client.exe and they can see each other in LAN ONLY in Starcraft. From what i have read the right type of vpn for this situation is Secured Socket Tunneling Protocol: "Secure socket tunneling protocol, also referred to as SSTP, is by definition an application-layer protocol. It is designed to employ a synchronous communication in a back and forth motion between two programs. It allows many application endpoints over one network connection, between peer nodes, thereby enabling efficient usage of the communication resources that are available to that network. " Question: I don't have experience with networking programming so my question for the ones who have, is this the right approach? PS1: i don't want something done like OpenVpn, i do this as learning exercise. • Consolidate the same image used multiple times in a PDF.

  I am generating PDF documents using DevExpress XtraReports. I am using the same image over and over (in rows of status lights). The PDF generated seems to duplicate the image definition for each image included. I would prefer if it included the image once and referenced it wherever it needed another copy - this would drastically reduce the size of my PDF docs. Is there any way to achieve this using DevExpress or even post processed via a third party application. Any help is appreciated.

• Are Sphinx & thinking_sphinx really stable? Not indexing Columns

  I'm encountering strange behaviour from thinking_sphinx/sphinx. My define_index block is about 100 lines, so quite a lot of columns i'm indexing. For full-text searching I only need about 10 attributes, for sorting and filtering I have another approximately 50 columns, mostly floats and integers. By filtering I mean using the "with" or "without" options. Searching does not really work consistently. All of a sudden, one attribute fails to filter. Or if I add a new one, it does not work. Only after a lot of tinkering it suddenly starts working. I cannot really reproduce it. Steps I that sometimes lead me to success where: rm -rf db/sphinx change the attribute definition e.g. has some_attribute = has some_attribute, :sortable = true or = has some_attribute, :sortable = true, :as = "some_attribute" restarting the server assigning a new :as name = has some_attribute, :as = "some_attribute_new" (yes, I did rake ts:rebuild or rake ts:in after every step) Does anybody else encounter similar problems?

• How to generate Doctrine models/classes that extend a custom record class

  When I use Doctrine to generate classes from Yaml/db each Base class (which includes the table definition) extends the Doctrine_Record class. Since my app uses a master and (multiple) slave db servers I need to be able to make the Base classes extend my custom record class to force writes to go to the master db server (as described here). However if I change the base class manually I lose it again when I regenerate my classes from Yaml/db using Doctrine. I need to find a way of telling Doctrine to extend my own Base class, or find a different solution to a master/slave db setup using Doctrine. Example generated model: abstract class My_Base_User extends Doctrine_Record { However I need it to be automatically generated as: abstract class My_Base_User extends My_Record { I am using Doctrine 1.2.1 in a new Zend Framework 1.9.6 application if it makes any difference.

• Do I correctly understand what a class is?

  I've had trouble finding a clear, concise laymans definition of a class. Usually, they give general ideas without specifically spelling it out, and I'm wondering if I'm understanding this correctly. As I understand it, a class is the set of code that controls an object. For example, in an app that has a button for 'Yes' and a button for 'No', and a text box for output, the code that tells the computer what to do when the user uses the Yes button is one class, the code for hitting No is another class, and an object is the two buttons and what they do together to influence the output box. Am I right, or am I confusing terms here? Thanks

  I am new to creating work item types in TFS and want to create a new Work Item type. I looked at work item template option, but that is not sufficient for me. I need to add few new fields and have a customized form. From search I got information about Work Item Type definition but I am looking for some detailed example. Also I would like to know the permissions needed to add a new work item type. I got administrator privileges for my project, but not on TFS as a whole. With that can I add a new template for my project. Please provide me direction.

  It sounds silly, but I can't get it. Why can the expression [] == [] be typed at all? More specifically, which type (in class Eq) is inferred to the type of list elements? In a ghci session, I see the following: Prelude> :t (==[]) (==[]) :: (Eq [a]) => [a] -> Bool But the constraint Eq [a] implies Eq a also, as is shown here: Prelude> (==[]) ([]::[IO ()]) <interactive>:1:1: No instance for (Eq (IO ())) arising from use of `==' at <interactive>:1:1-2 Probable fix: add an instance declaration for (Eq (IO ())) In the definition of `it': it = (== []) ([] :: [IO ()]) Thus, in []==[], the type checker must assume that the list element is some type a that is in class Eq. But which one? The type of [] is just [a], and this is certainly more general than Eq a = [a].

  I'm not even sure what this principle is called or how to search for it, so I sincerely apologize if it has been brought up before, but the best way to do it is with an example. class Properties { public string Name { get; set; } } class MyClass { class SubProperties: Properties { public override Name { get { return GetActualName(); } set { _value = SetActualName(value); } } } public SubProperties ClassProperties; private GetActualName() { ClassProperties.Name = "name"; } private SetActualName(string s) { ClassProperties.Name = SomeOtherFunction(s); } } The idea is to have any object that instantiates MyClass have a fully accessible property ClassProperties. To that object, it would look exactly like a Properties object, but behind the scenes, MyClass is actually computing and modifying the results of the fields. This method of declaration is obviously wrong since I can't access GetActualName() and SetActualName() from within the SubProperties definition. How would I achieve something like this?

  I'm just digging a bit into Haskell and I started by trying to compute the Phi-Coefficient of two words in a text. However, I ran into some very strange behaviour that I cannot explain. After stripping everything down, I ended up with this code to reproduce the problem: let sumTup = (sumTuples°concat) frequencyLists let sumFixTup = (138, 136, 17, 204) putStrLn (show ((138, 136, 17, 204) == sumTup)) putStrLn (show (phi sumTup)) putStrLn (show (phi sumFixTup)) This outputs: True NaN 0.4574206676616167 So although the sumTupand sumFixTup show as equal, they behave differently when passed to phi. The definition of phi is: phi (a, b, c, d) = let dividend = fromIntegral(a * d - b * c) divisor = sqrt(fromIntegral((a + b) * (c + d) * (a + c) * (b + d))) in dividend / divisor

  Hi, I'm trying to build a java application with gcj but getting the error below. multiple definition of `java resource .dummy' gcj versions are 4.4.1 on Ubuntu and 4.3.4 on cygwin/windows XP and I'm building it with gcj --main=my.MainClass --classpath=my my/*java Anyone seen this or know a workaround without installing an earlier version of gcj. If that is the way to do it does anyone know how to do that on cygwin or will I have to build it? • NoSql Crash Course/Tutorial

  Hi all, I've seen NoSQL pop up quite a bit on SO and I have a solid understanding of why you would use it (from here, Wikipedia, etc). This could be due to the lack of concrete and uniform definition of what it is (more of a paradigm than concrete implementation), but I'm struggling to wrap my head around how I would go about designing a system that would use it or how I would implement it in my system. I'm really stuck in a relational-db mindset thinking of things in terms of tables and joins... At any rate, does anybody know of a crash course/tutorial on a system that would use it (kind of a "hello world" for a NoSQL-based system) or a tutorial that takes an existing "Hello World" app based on SQL and converts it to NoSQL (not necessarily in code, but just a high-level explanation). I see this having one solid answer, but if you guys feel like it should be community wiki, I'll be happy to change it. Thanks! Chris

• cmake: Target-specific preprocessor definitions for CUDA targets seems not to work

  I'm using cmake 2.8.1 on Mac OSX 10.6 with CUDA 3.0. So I added a CUDA target which needs BLOCK_SIZE set to some number in order to compile. cuda_add_executable(SimpleTestsCUDA SimpleTests.cu BlockMatrix.cpp Matrix.cpp ) set_target_properties(SimpleTestsCUDA PROPERTIES COMPILE_FLAGS -DBLOCK_SIZE=3) When running make VERBOSE=1 I noticed that nvcc is invoked w/o -DBLOCK_SIZE=3, which results in an error, because BLOCK_SIZE is used in the code, but defined nowhere. Now I used the same definition for a CPU target (using add_executable(...)) and there it worked. So now the questions: How do I figure out what cmake does with the set_target_properties line if it points to a CUDA target? Googling around didn't help so far and a workaround would be cool..

• How can I modify objects inside frames with AS3 in a permanent way?

  I have a MovieClip symbol created with flash in a fla file library. There is a textfield in frame one of this movieclip's timeline . There is another frame in the movieclip timeline. There is a custon class definition for this symbol. It is a flipping card in a memory game. I access the textfield by going to frame 2 (gotoAndStop(2)) and setting the textfield's text property ( this.field.text = "hello" ). However if I go to frame 1 and then return to frame 2, the text becomes the original one in the library's symbol. I have to modify the text propery again in a showFace method I've written. Besides, I cannot pass parameters in the constructor because it is a symbol in the library and that would give errors. I find this behaviour of flash extremely weird. Is there a way I can set properties inside frames permanently? Thank you

• RESTFul, statelesness and sessions

  RESTFul service has a rule that it should be stateless. By beeing that it does not allow a session to be created and maintained by sending a session key between the client and the server and then holding a session state on the server. If i look at the definition in wikipedia of stateless server http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stateless_server "A stateless server is a server that treats each request as an independent transaction that is unrelated to any previous request" It states that it should be unrelated to any previous request. In practice this means that any type of authentication will be comparing the credentials of a user to a state on the server that was created by a previous operation. So a service called login is related to and dependent on the state that has been created by previous requests (ex: create_user and/or change_password). In my view you are breaking statelessnes by doing authentication. My point is that people are complaining about having sessions in RESTFul is breaking statelesness but doing authentication is also breaking the same rule. What do you think?

  Hi All, I have been trying to call a C function that has the following signature int changeFoo(L_TCHAR* pszFileSrc){....} in my JNI call my method looks like this: JNIEXPORT jint JNICALL Java_com_me_L_AFoo (JNIEnv * env, jclass jclass, jstring pSrc) { jint retValue = -100; retValue = changeFoo(pSrc); return retValue; } I get the following error in visual studio. Error 1 error C2664: 'L_FileConvert' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'jstring' to 'L_TCHAR *' c:\Ayusman\Work\MyVCpp\LTExampleDll\LTExampleDll\LTExampleMain.cpp 46 LTExampleDll When I looked at the definition of L_TCHAR * here is what I got in the header files (in that sequence): typedef TCHAR L_TCHAR; typedef WCHAR TCHAR,*PTCHAR; typedef wchar_t WCHAR; //wc, 16 bit UNICODE char I work on java, this is a JNI application that I am trying to build. • ASP.NET 1.0 site error after upgrade to VS.NET 2010

  Help. I installed VS.NET 2010 and now my existing ASP.NET MVC application won't run. I checked that the 1.0 version of System.Web.Mvc is still referenced but when I browse my application, I get an error like this: "Compiler Error Message: CS1579: foreach statement cannot operate on variables of type 'object' because 'object' does not contain a public definition for 'GetEnumerator'". My partial view has this declaration: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<List<ProductModel" %> //various import statements <div <% foreach (var category in Model.Categories) { % <span<%= category.Name %</span <span<%= category.Market%</span <% } % </div For what it's worth, the source view shows ViewUserControl in red and gives a tool tip reading "Cannot resolve symbol 'ViewUserControl'". My working code didn't change, the only delta is that I upgraded to VS.NET 2010 (which includes MVC 2.0); I'm sure something is not referenced correctly but I cannot figure out what's going on.

• Upgrading a SharePoint list instance that was deployed via feature

  I'm curious how others address this issue. Using VSEWSS 1.3, I have created a site content type, a list definition (w event receivers), and a list instance. All of them are in the same WSP solution and each is activated individually via features. Now let's assume that all the features have been activated for some time, and the list instance contains a number of items (that can't be deleted). Now suppose I need to make a change to the schema.xml (inject some javascript, modify views, whatever) of the list. Is it even possible to "upgrade" the schema of the existing list instance? Otherwise I would think I'm stuck creating a new instance and copying items over.

• PHP: Strange behaviour while calling custom php functions

  I am facing a strange behavior while coding in PHP with Flex. Let me explain the situation: I have two funcions lets say: populateTable() //puts some data in a table made with flex createXML() //creates an xml file which is used by Fusion Charts to create a chart Now, if i call populateTable() alone, the table gets populated with data but if i call it with createXML(), the table doesn't get populated but createXML() does it's work i.e. creates an xml file. Even if i run following code, only xml file gets generated but table remains empty whereas i called populateTable() before createXML(). Any idea what may be going wrong?   Mathematica has a built-in function ArgMax for functions over infinite domains, based on the standard mathematical definition. The analog for finite domains is a handy utility function. Given a function and a list (call it the domain of the function), return the element(s) of the list that maximize the function.
