• What is the structure of network managers system-connections files?

  could anyone list the complete structure of the configuration files, which network manager stores for known networks in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections for known networks? Sample (filename askUbuntu): [connection] id=askUbuntu uuid=81255b2e-bdf1-4bdb-b6f5-b94ef16550cd type=802-11-wireless [802-11-wireless] ssid=askUbuntu mode=infrastructure mac-address=00:08:CA:E6:76:D8 [ipv6] method=auto [ipv4] method=auto I would like to create some of them by my own using a script. However, before doing so I would like to know every possible option. • pdflatex reads .eps files saved in OS/X, but not in Ubuntu

  Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm a newbie. I am preparing a manuscript in LaTeX. The journal (Physical Biology, an IOP publication) requires that figures be saved in .eps format, so I am trying to do that. However, I cannot get my LaTeX file to build when I have generated the .eps files on my Ubuntu computer. If I save the images on my Mac, the file build just fine. So far, I have tried saving images in ImageJ, FIJI and Inkscape. The same problem occurs in all three. When using kile, I get the following error: /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/oberdiek/epstopdf-base.sty:0: Shell escape feature is not enabled. In TexWorks, the error is different, but still there: Package pdftex.def Error: File `./figures4/figure4a-eps-converted-to.pdf' not found. Now, if I fire up Inkscape, FIJI or ImageJ on OS/X, everything works fine. The Mac also can't build with the Ubuntu-saved images. The images generated on the Ubuntu machine open fine using Document Viewer. I am building the same LaTeX file on both computers, with the exact same results. The header of my LaTeX file is: \documentclass[12pt]{iopart} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{epstopdf} \usepackage{parskip} \usepackage{color} \usepackage{iopams} And then the code for the figure is: \begin{figure} \center{\includegraphics[width=4in] {./figures4/figure4a.eps}} \footnotesize{\caption{ \label{fig:4a} (4a) lorem ipsum dolor sic amet.}} \end{figure} I'd be happy to send an example of both .eps files. Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.  Java 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All E-Business Suite customers must upgrade to JRE 7 by June 2017. Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed.   I'm looking forward to speaking in Atlanta on the 24th, will be fun to get back down that way to visit with some friends and present two topics that I really enjoy. First, an introduction to performance tuning. Performance tuning is a very wide and deep topic and we're staying close to the surface. I direct this class for newbie sql users who have less than 2 years of experience. It's all the things I wish someone would have told me in my first 2 years about what to look for when the database was slow...or allegedly slow I should say. We'll cover using profiler to find slow performing queries and how to save the data off to a table as well as a tour of other features. The difference between clustered, non clustered and covering indexes. How to look at and understand an execution plan (at a high level) and finally the difference between a temp table and a table variable and what the implications are of using either one in your code. That pretty much takes up a full hour. Second presentation, Loading Data in Real Time. It's really a presentation about partitioning but with a twist that we used at work recently to solve a need to load some data quickly and put it into production with minimal downtime. We'll cover partition functions, schemes,$partition, merge, sys.partitions and show some examples of building a set of partitioned tables and using the switch statement to move it from one table to another. • Problem with XeTeX (LaTeX) and system fonts

  I have started to use an enterprise specific class for LaTeX, but have got a problem with usage system fonts in Ubuntu. The class uses the fontspec package, I have therefore been instructed to use XeTeX (i.e. the command xelatex instead of latex or pdflatex). However, the command xelatex testfile.tex results in the following message: ! Package xkeyval Error: `TeX' undefined in families `Ligatures'. See the xkeyval package documentation for explanation. Type H <return> for immediate help. ... l.61 \newfontfamily\headfont{Arial} ? The class has previously been used on Mac and Windows and the font setup is as follows: \newfontfamily\headfont{Arial} \newcommand\texthead[1]{\headfont #1} \setromanfont{Georgia} \setmainfont{Georgia} \setsansfont[Scale=MatchLowercase]{Verdana} It has been suggested that since XeTeX makes use of system fonts and the class file has worked flawlessly on Mac and Windows, the problem might be that Arial is not a name used in Ubuntu. I have tried to exchange Arial with Ubuntu Light in the setup code above, but that have not been any improvement. Any suggestions please on how to move forward?

  Think we're done with green screens in the enterprise apps world? Fusion User Experience Advocate Debra Lilley (@debralilley) drew my attention to this super retro iPad terminal emulator app being used by a colleague to connect to JDE. Yes, before Middleware, this is how you did it. Surely the ultimate in hipster retro coexistence? Mind you, I've had to explain to lots of people I showed this to just what Telnet and IBM AS/400 are (or were). MochaSoft TN5250 Terminal Emulator iPad App This OG way of connecting to apps is a timely reminder not to forget all those legacy apps out there and the UX aspect to adoption and change. If a solution already works well and there's an emotional attachment to it, then the path to upgrade needs to be very clear and have valuable and demonstrable ROI for users and decision makers, a path that spans emotion and business benefits. On a pure usability front, that old school charm of the character-based green glow look 'n' feel could be easily done as a skin, personalizing an application for the user so that they feel comfortable with it. Fun too particularly in the mobile and BYOD space! In fact, there is a thriving retro apps market out there as illustrated by this spiffy lunar lander app (hat tip: John Cartan), part of a whole set of Atari's greatest hits available for iOS. Lunar Lander App And of course, there's the iOS version of Pong. Check out this retro Apple Mac SE/30 too. I actually remember using one of these. I have an Apple Mac Plus somewhere in my parents' house. I tried it out recently, and it actually booted, although all it was good for was playing the onboard games. Looking at all these olde worlde things makes me feel very old, but kinda warm inside too. The latter is a key part of today's applications user experience too.

  I'm running nginx wordpress server in KVM using 12.04 server x86. It was running very well about 4 month until 2 hours ago. I found that my website is down and no ping response. Virt-manager logged high cpu load(plz see the picture below) before unexpected shut down. I want to know what process caused unexpected shutdown. The following log files make me think my server is attacked. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. kern.log and syslog showed me same output. • What is the correct way to restart udev in Ubuntu?

  I've changed the name of my eth1 interface to eth0. How to ask udev now to re-read the config? service udev restart and udevadm control --reload-rules don't help. So is there any valid way except of rebooting? (yes, reboot helps with this issue) UPD: yes, I know I should prepend the commands with sudo, but either one I posted above changes nothing in ifconfig -a output: I still see eth1, not eth0. UPD 2: I just changed the NAME property of udev-rule line. Don't know any reason for this to be ineffective. There is no any error in executing of both commands I've posted above, but they just don't change actual interface name in ifconfig -a output. If I perform reboot - then interface name changes as expected. UPD 3: let I explain all the case better ;-) For development purposes I write some script that clones virtual machines (VirtualBox-driven) and pre-sets them up in some way. So I perform a command to clone VM, start it and as long as network interface MAC is changed - udev adds the second rule to network persistent rules. Right after machine is booted for the first time there are 2 rules: eth0, which does not exist, as long as it existed in the original VM image MAC eth1, which exists, but all the configuration in all files refers to eth0, so it is not that good for me So I with sed delete the line with eth0 (it is obsolete and useless in cloned image) and replace eth1 with eth0. So currently I have valid persistent rule, but there is still eth1 in /dev. The issue: I don't want to reboot the machine (it will take another time, which is not good thing on building-VM-stage) and just want to have my /dev rebuilt with some command so I have ready-to-use VM without any reboots.

  I have a hybrid disk. After trying to copy some files from another disk to this one, I lost my OSX and Ubuntu boot capability. • Inverted LACK Table Serves as a Perfect Gear Rack [DIY]

  We’ve seen IKEA gear hacked to hold audio and computer gear before, but this mod adds in a simple and effective twist. LACK end tables are, conveniently, the same width as a standard server rack. This makes it super simple for DIYers to mount their gear right into the legs of the table with no modification necessary. In this case, however, Winston Smith included a clever update to the mod. Rather than leave it like a standard table, he flipped the table upside down for increased stability and a stronger connection between the legs of his improvised audio rack and the table-top-turned-floor-plate. He then finished it with a matching LACK shelf piece to serve as a turn-table stand. • How do I stop sound coming from my speakers with a faulty headphone socket?

  On my laptop, I have a faulty headphone socket, so when I insert headphones into it, the speakers do not mute. I can confirm that this problem is caused by faulty hardware and not software as when I twist the headphone jack, the speakers come on and off according to the movements. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I worked around this problem by going into alsamixer and disabling "Auto-Mute Mode", and then going into the sound settings and choosing "Analog Headphones". However, on 12.04, no such option exists, rendering my headphones unusable with no way to work around the problem. I momentarily thought I had this problem fixed when I installed PulseAudio Volume Control from the Software Centre. I selected the Output Devices tab, and under "Built-in Audio Analogue Stereo" I selected "Headphones" for the port. However, this almost randomly seems to change back to "Speakers", despite me setting "Auto-Mute Mode" as disabled. Basically, I would like a way to permanently mute the speakers so only the headphones will play sound, without it losing my settings. It is ridiculous that such a simple setting has been taken away to "simplify" the user interface.

• Why is Windows registry needed?

  As I have debugged problems in com, side by side, dealt with dll hell, all while hating the windows registry with passion, I was wondering why is it needed. I never felt compelled to read an entire book on registry best practices, and then just "get it". I have, however, used Linux and Mac OS, and look at the ways one can install multiple versions of Python and its libraries on the same *nix computer. Because registry has somewhat of a free (albeit ugly) format, and is used for all sorts of purposes, I have never understood what essential problem it is trying to solve. For instance, Microsoft does not want you to have two different versions of MS Office installed side by side. They use registry to enforce this during installation. This limitation is artificial, in my opinion. If they really cared to allow a different behavior, they could have adjusted their architecture accordingly. In Mac OS you can install and remove apps by just dropping them into a particular folder. So, A) What essential problem it is trying to solve? B) How do other operating systems solve it?

• Air Canada Will No Longer Be My Airline

  If the constant labour disputes at Air Canada (the most recent being a week ago where pilots were locked out and mechanics and bag handlers were poised to strike) weren’t enough to make me reconsider moving all my flights to West Jet, this latest twist definitely will. CBC reported that Aveos, a privately held company that has the contract to provide maintenance for Air Canada, had suddenly and without notice shut its doors (read the story here) There’s something missing from the stories currently online though. Months ago, Air Canada gave their Winnipeg based maintenance staff an ultimatum – stay with Air Canada but be forced to relocate to a different city, or switch from Air Canada to Aveos and stay in Winnipeg. So all of those staff that Air Canada pushed into Aveos just so they could stay in Winnipeg are now out of a job with huge uncertainty around their future. Labour disputes that rise up continually and hamper personal travel and business, questionable timing of business decisions and the resulting impact on individuals…there’s too much drama in that company for me to rely on it for my travel needs. WestJet it is moving forward until Air Canada gets their act together – which probably means its WestJet for the foreseeable future. D

• Media Drive Permissions

  I just switched from a Hackintosh to Linux, and am trying to make sense of it. On my hackintosh, I partitioned a big drive into 3 parts--1 which holds music, 1 for film/tv, and one for the OS. I installed Ubuntu onto the OS partition, and am now trying to make it so I can write to the media drives. I've searched around and tried several things. I tried gksu nautilus in Terminal, which brought me into root permissions. When I select a folder and try to change permissions, I get "The owner could not be changed...Error setting owner: Read-only file system" Ultimately, I have two specific aims: - I want to make it so I can write to the film/tv drive from the ubuntu machine only - I want to make it so I can write to the music drive from the ubuntu machine, or any other machine on the network (all Macs). That is, I want a single music library (an iTunes file) that will serve all Mac laptops/iPads/iPhones on the network, but which XBMC on the Ubuntu machine can also see / read from. Music will be added to the iTunes library via a single Mac laptop, but all other devices should be able to see the music drive.

• Raspberry Pi, Time Capsule Progress

  So by way of an update. I thought all was good with my Raspberry Pi, Debian and Netatalk Apple Time Capsule Clone. However something very strange going on. Although I could backup my Mac's + PC's fine to Raspberry Pi with external USB HD; strangely with RPI running, I couldn't use AirPlay. I found myself unable to play anything from Mac to Apple TV. So after lots of trying to make this work, I about turned and finally went out and got myself a 2TB Apple Time Capsule. More cash than I would want to spend on anything like this, but Apple you got me. I would like to offer a top tip, which maybe goes a small way to justifying silly expenditure... You can easily add a USB HD to any Time Capsule. I've just added a 3 TB external USB HD, giving me a 5 TB of total backup grunt. 3 TB External USB HD, was peanuts by comparison to Apple kit. So all working, its all solid as you'd expect.Apple 2, maybe me .5. But strong, solid backups now happening, without hassle (but a bit of a credit card bill to follow)

• I have discovered a fundamental truth about TV shows and plots

  For years, we have all known (okay, maybe I give people too much credit) that there is a very small finite number of plots.  I propose a project.  Let’s use the blogosphere to catalog those plotlines, and then find and document the episodes of shows that use them, including the show title. As evidence, how many shows have used the following plot line:? The standard “evil twin” plotline?  Once relegated to soaps, it has show up in crime shows, with the twist of DNA.  Step one, concentrate one this one.  Tell me about every show you recall that has used this plot.  I will collect and document the shows on my website (www.loethen.net) and we can build a database of the plots. Step two, what other common themes should I offer up?  How about the bigamist plot line?  The “bad guy was dead” plot line (revenge from the dead"?  The “vast government conspiracy” plotline? Let the games begin….

• Huge spike in traffic tracked by Google Analytics from Safari browsers

  My site urbanindo.com recently experienced huge spike in traffic tracked by Google Analytics. The huge spike sometime shows in several same pages. This is odd because I rarely experienced that much traffic before. Some pages can have hundreds of visitors at the same time. But when I read the webserver log, those pages only showed up in only one or two entries, not hundreds like the GA showed. But the only similar thing about the entries is that they are using similar browser agent. Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3 Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3 And when I opened the Google Analytics Audience Technology Browsers & OS and I plotted the chart based on the browsers, I saw that the huge spike came from Safari. This huge spikes started to happen since the beginning of this August, which happens to be when I use multiple webservers behind load balancer (although I'm pretty sure those two are not relevant). Is there something wrong with my GA configuration?

• Most suited technology for browser games?

  I was thinking about making a 2D MMO which I would in the long run support on various plattforms like desktop, mac, browser, android and ios. The server will be c++/linux based and the first client would go in the browser. So I have done some research and found that webgl and flash 11 support hardware accelerated rendering, I saw some other things like normal HTML5 painting. So my question is, which technology should I use for such a project? My main goal would be that the users have a hassle free experience using what there hardware can give them with hardware acceleration. And the client should work on the most basic out-of-the-box pc's that any casual pc or mac user has. And another criteria would be that it should be developer friendly. I've messed with webgl abit for example and that would require writing a engine from scratch - which is acceptable but not preferred. Also, in case of non-actionscript, which kind language is most prefered in terms of speed and flexability. I'm not to fond of javascript due to the garbage collector but have learned to work around it. Thank you for you time.

• Is there a name for the Builder Pattern where the Builder is implemented via interfaces so certain parameters are required?

  So we implemented the builder pattern for most of our domain to help in understandability of what actually being passed to a constructor, and for the normal advantages that a builder gives. The one twist was that we exposed the builder through interfaces so we could chain required functions and unrequired functions to make sure that the correct parameters were passed. I was curious if there was an existing pattern like this. • Should I use OpenGL or DX11 for my game?

  I'm planning to write a game from scratch (a BIG Game, for commercial purpose). I'm aware that there are certain compute libraries like OpenCL, AMD APP SDK, C++ AMP as well as DirectCompute - both from MS (NOT interested in CUDA) are available in the market. I'm planning to write the game from the scratch, which includes the following engines... Physics Engine AI Engine Main Game Engine (... and if anything is missed). I'm aware that, there are some free physics engine libraries in the market. Not sure about free AI engine libraries. I'm bit confused in choosing between the OpenCL, AMD APP SDK, and C++ AMP libraries (as already mentioned i'm NOT interested in CUDA). I want my game to be published in Windows/Android/Mac OSX. It means it should be a cross-platform game. I will be having "one source code" that i'll compile for various platforms like Windows/Android/Mac OSX, and any others if i missed. Note: Since I'm NOT a Java guy, kindly do NOT suggest me the Java Language. For Graphics language should i use OpenGL or DirectX 11? I have heard that OpenGL runs on a single core, and not sure of DirectX 11. Between OpenGL and DirectX which one should i follow? or else, are there any other graphics language that i need to start with? I want to make use of the parallelism in GPU as well as CPU.

• Bending of track in a racing game

  I am trying to create a small racing game in which the track would be modeled using a BSpline curve for the path's center line and directional vectors to define the 'bending' of the track at each point. My problem is that I don't know how to calculate the correct bending / slope of the curve, in such a way that it would be optimal or at least visually nice for a car to 'bend in the corner'. My idea was to use the direction of the 2nd derivatives of the curve, however while this approach looks fine for most of the track, there are points in which the 2nd derivative makes sharp 'twists' / very quick 180 degree flips. I also read about 'knots' of bsplines, but I don't know if such 'twist' in 2nd derivatives is a knot or knots are something else. Can you tell me that using a BSpline: 1. How could I calculate a visually nice bending of a track for a racing game? 2. Is it possible to do this by using some simple calculations of centripertal force / gravity? 3. Is it possible to do this by using 1st, 2nd and 3rd derivatives of the BSpline curve? I am not looking for the 'physically correct' bending angle for the track, I would just like to create something which is visually pleasing in a simple game. I am using a framework which has a built-in class for BSpline, including support for 1st, 2nd and 3rd derivatives of the curve.

  I operate a small company that charges $99 for a piece of software. I'd like to know what would be a fair price for non-US customers. Today I sold a license to a party in South Africa. He told me he had been watching the project for two years while business justification could be made for the purchase as SA's currency is nine times weaker than the US dollar. I am aware that many software companies charge prices in local currencies that equate to the price in US dollars. I am aware that my costs remain fixed, and I obviously I cannot discount the rate at which my time costs me. I'm OK with earning less per sale as I would rather get my software onto the desktops of those that need it rather than having them try to write it themselves. Support is light and I can usually point a user to an existing blog or forum post. Being a resident of Hawaii, I am aware that certain goods and services cost more here. Power is up to six times as much per KWH as it is in, say, Seattle, and wages are approximately 60% of what they are for my profession (programmer). I'd like to offer my software at a price that would be fair for everyone around the globe. If a currency is 2 foreign units to 1 US dollar, and goods and services cost 50% more and pay for an equivalent job is 50% of what it is here, should I charge, say, $50 instead of $99? Is there a resource which would allow me to input a price in US dollars and adjust for a list of international locations?
