• Computer resetting semi-randomly

  Hi, I'm having a problem with my desktop whereby it sometimes resets itself semi-randomly. For example, I'll switch it on, it'll boot an OS and shortly after getting to the desktop it will immediately reset with no warning. The time isn't consistent - sometimes it does it before reaching login. I'm pretty sure it's not an OS thing; have tried Ubuntu and a Windows install and both exhibit it. It also doesn't appear to be heat-related because sometimes it appears to be able to "get past" it and will then run stably even under load; if anything it seems to be worse from a cold start. My gut feeling is some kind of power issue but I'm clutching at straws a little. Any suggestions on how I could go about testing it or trying to narrow the problem down would be appreciated. The machine is four years old now so while I can replace components if needed, it's not worth enough that I'm comfortable buying new parts without being pretty confident that they'll fix the problem. Thanks in advance for any help :) Edit: Okay, the motherboard is a MSI K8N SLI; CPU is an Athlon64 X2 4200+. Has one video card, a GeForce 7800GT. 1GB RAM, not sure of brand; 3 hard drives, two SATA and one PATA. Flashed motherboard to latest BIOS some time ago. Edit the Second: I thought I'd narrowed it down to the PSU for a while, but then it recurred again. I ended up pulling everything out but CPU, RAM and motherboard and it still seems to be stuffed (if anything, it's gotten worse in the last couple of days). I assume it's one of those three components, but the machine is old enough that I don't really want to spend money replacing any of them. So thanks for everyone's suggestions; much appreciated!

• Monitor reset itself and now I can't set the resolution/settings back to how it was before

  I've had my LG 24" widescreen monitor since 2009 and 2 weeks ago I noticed the monitor turned itself off (never had it done this before) so I switched it back on to find all the settings like gamma, resolution etc. different = looked like it had been reset. Everyone in the house swears they never unplugged and plugged it back in. When I opened a webpage the fonts and zoom on the pages were different and my desktop was strange too; fonts of the icons were different etc. The screen seems blurry and when I watch movies the faces look distorted so I thought I would try to first figure out the resolution it used to be but when I go under "Adjust screen resolution" none of the options work and there is no recommended resolution marked; all the options stretch out the screen and looks terrible so right now I have it set to the least distorted one. Then since the resolution wasn't working I set the other manual settings(done by physical buttons on the monitor) back to how it used to be (luckily, I had written these down). The monitor looks better but the resolution makes it a strain to use. I thought maybe some Windows update caused this crap so I tried to System Restore: didn't work. What went wrong? A few questions: 1) What was the likely cause of the monitor shutting down itself and screwing up the settings I have been using since the day I bought the monitor? 2) Why have the fonts changed everywhere unless this is a HDD/video card problem? 3) How do I find the perfect resolution it used to be? The monitor wants me to set it to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't one of the options although I don't remember what resolution I used before. I use the 16:9 setting while I try the available resolution options but nothing looks good! How do I find what it used to be? • Hardware issue: computer plays beep sounds at startup, and then turns off

  Turns out that after moving, my computer got damaged somehow. I installed my computer 2 days ago. I didn't check the state of the hardware parts and turned the pc on recklessly, not realizing that the cpu fan was dettached from the cpu. After this I reattached the fan. The computer worked kind of faulty after that, because at the time of startup, it would play a long beep (different from the normal beep) and won't display anything. I tried restarting after this incident and it got fixed (don't know how, but it did), and I was even able to play some videogames for some hours (more than 5). This morning I tried to get this issue sorted out by checking again the cpu and in general, the connections, and for my surprise, at the time of turning it on again, the computer wouldn't boot at all. I reapplied some thermal paste to the cpu and fan, but got no results (I did this because the old paste was very badly distributted along the surface of both cpu and fan). Now every time I turn it on, the computer acts randomly: sometimes at startup, it plays a long continous beep and then turns off. one time it played a long continous beep and got to the windows password input screen, but then it turned off More frequently, I turn it on and after some seconds, it turns off without any sound. • Dual Monitor setup issues between laptop and external led monitor

  I have two challenges. Monitor will not connect to laptop through HDMI Watching HD video content causes the laptop to sometimes turn off expecially when I'm streaming from tekzilla.com Setup. I got my new HP 2311x LED LCD monitor this week and I have it running as the main monitor extended by the 15 inch screen on my Dell Studio 1558. Right now I have to connect the external monitor through VGA. For the HDMI connection issue. I suspect that either the appropriate drivers are not installed because I don't see any hdmi device in the device manager. I've checked and I don't see any hdmi specific drivers listed online. For the shut down issue, I suspect the laptop might be overheating. Not sure why it would. It never did that while I watched movies on my laptop's default screen. My Laptop Configuration: 15" led lcd screen at 1366 x 768 intel i5 processor integrated graphics card 4 GB DDR3 RAM 500 GB hard drive I've tried everything from switching the source on my monitor to hdmi to start up combinations and nothing has worked. What could be the issue and how do I solve it?

• Convert a cassette tape recording to digital format

  Has anyone been successful with transferring audio cassette tape recordings to a digital format? I would like to preserve old cassette tape recordings of my grandparents to some digital format: MP3, WAV, etc... The quality of the tapes are mediocre. I think I can handle the quality restoration but getting the audio from tape to digital is my question. Below is a list of the hardware that I can work with: Cassette Deck: I have a Technics stereo cassette deck model RS-B12. It has separate left and right IN and OUT RCA type jacks on the back. In the front it has a headphone phono jack, plus left and right mic input phono jacks. On the computer side: -I have a Windows Vista PC with no additional software other than what came with the machine from Costco. No sound editing software that I can see. There is no sound card on the PC. On the front panel there is a mini-phono mic input jack and there are several different types of in/out mini-phono jacks on the back. In addition, USB and Firewire. I also have access to a new (2009) iMac with a mini-phono input jack for a powered mic or other audio source and GarageBand that has come with the computer. In addition, USB and Firewire. What are my options for getting these cassette recordings into a digital format? Whats the best format? What sort of wires would I need and will I want to utilize the USB or Firewire or can I simply use the audio inputs on the PC (or Mac) to receive the audio stream?

• No headphone or speakers plugged in - Windows 7 issue

  I am facing a wierd issue between my sound card driver and Windows7(any edition). I have a sony vaio notebook (VPCEB24EN). Two days ago, on start I got diabled wifi, charging and speakers. Then I restart the PC and everthing worked fine. Later on I again restarted my machine, and then I found the my speakers were not working. I thought, restart will work. I restarted many more times but it did'nt work. I searched google and found that , it might be due to : 1. Hardware is not switched on from bios. 2. No hardware. 3. overriding 64-bit drivers with 32-bit drivers. To make it working, I restored my laptop from scratched, but while restoring pc, the realtek HD drivers, it gave me an error 505. I then formatted the drive and installed Win7 Ultimate 32bit (With PC was, Win7 64-bit Home Basic). I got lots of yellow exclamation in device manager, thinking now this will resolve my issue. But Even after the installing all drivers on a fresh installation, I was still with the same position. A red cross on speaker- No Speakers or Headphone plugged in. Please Note: My Laptop is Vaio , E Series, VPCEB24EN. Audio : Intel® High Definition Audio compatible but accepts Realted Audio. While using BIOS Agent, I got Intel Chipset 5 Series Audio Adapter and ATI RV370 Audio adapter found on my board. Installed is Win7 32bit Ultimate. factory default was Win7 64-bit Home Basic Memory: RAM 3GB/ 320GB HDD Display : ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5145 Graphics

• What parts of a motherboard age, and how can I choose one with the longest possible life?

  I have a home-built computer that's probably about four years old. I realize this probably seems ancient to some folks, but computers have no moving parts (except the fans), so theoretically they should last a long time, if I still have software to run on them. A few weeks ago, it began blue-screening and freezing up, with various error messages. It almost always happened about five minutes after startup. I assumed that the video card was overheating, since the cheap little fan on the heatsink died, so I replaced it. Long story short, after upgrading the video drivers a couple of times and performing some other troubleshooting, I remembered that the last time this happened, I took out the memory SIMS and cleaned the contacts with a gum eraser, so I did that again (noting that the SATA cables were very close to the chips on the SIMS). I re-routed the cables and reinstalled the SIMS. So far, so good; the machine has been trouble-free since. But blue-screens are distressing; I never know what bits are being chewed up in my OS installation when something like this happens. So I'm wondering if I'm choosing my components properly. If it matters, it's an Intel D915GAG motherboard and Corsair memory, but what I'm wondering is, should I be looking for certain characteristics when I choose these parts for my next computer, so that I can avoid this problem in my next build?

• HP G61 Laptop wont boot- display stays off, caps and num lock indicators blink repeatedly

  I had my HP G61 laptop running in sleep for a while. When I came back to it about a half-hour later, it was no longer in sleep mode - the power light and the Wi-Fi indicator light were on (I keep Wi-Fi off becuase I use a wired connection) - but nothing was showing on screen. In fact, the display wasn't even turned on. So I let it sit for about 10 minutes but nothing happened. I did a force shut down and rebooted. Instead of a normal boot, the display didnt turn on, the Wi-Fi indicator was off, and the Caps Lock and Num Lock lights just blinked repeatedly. On the external keyboard i use, none of the light indicators were blinking or even on. I tried force shut-down again 10 times, then unplugged all connections except for the power cable (my laptop battery dosent hold a charge for more than 2 minutes, so I always must have a wall connection) and tried to boot again but still nothing happened. I unplugged the battery and even then nothing happened. I also tried booting with the disk drive open, and then with it closed again. On the time it was closed, I was able to successfully boot into Windows, but recieved a "Windows did not shut-down sucessfully" notice. Does anybody know why this may have happened? My PC's specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 4GB of physical RAM, 8GB of vRAM (on a flash drive) AMD Vision x64 processor (don't know any other specs about it) ATI Radeon graphics card, 392 MB DVD-R/W lightscribe drive 2 External hard-disks (first one is 1.5TB, second one is 1TB) custom boot-screen and boot-annimation Standard BIOS apps running before sleep: firefox 10.4 itunes 10.6 adobe photoshop extended CS5.1 rockstar games social club (running in background) microsoft powerpoint 2010 professional edition google chrome I was NOT running Aero or any fancy themes - I was using the normal windows classic theme. I have a desktop icon manager application called Stardock Fences that was also running (it runs as a service/process).

• RAID administration in Debian Lenny

  I've got an old box that I don't want to scrap yet because it's got a nice working 5-disk RAID assembly. I want to create 2 arrays: RAID 1 with 2 disks and RAID 5 with the other 3 disks. The RAID card is Intel SRCU31L. I can create the RAID 1 volume in the console that you access with Ctrl+C at startup. But it only allows for creation of one volume so I can't do anything with the 3 remaining disks. I installed Debian Lenny on the RAID 1 volume and it worked out nicely. What utilites could I now use to create/manage the RAID volumes in Debian Linux? I installed the raidutils package but get an error when trying to fetch a list: #raidutil -L controller or #raidutil -L physical # raidutil -L controller osdOpenEngine : 11/08/110-18:16:08 Fatal error, no active controller device files found.   i was reading the back archives of a canadian privacy law blog, and he linked to a judicial decision. apparently as part of an investigation in which were used yahoo chat and google's old 'hello' image trading program the officer was able to determine a suspect's modem's MAC address: In order to determine who STEPHTOSH was, the officer did a trace on a programme called WHO IS in an effort to learn from where STEPHTOSH was coming. WHO IS is a command program available to the public. The officer was able to ascertain that the person using the name STEPHTOSH was a Rogers Internet customer. The officer was able to obtain the Internet Protocol address, also known as the I.P. There is only one location for an I.P., which is unique to that subscriber. By use of the website known as DNS STUFF.com, one is able to find with which company this I.P. is registered. It was ascertained that the I.P. address used by STEPHTOSH was registered to Rogers Cable, from the Toronto area. The officer also learned the Cable Modem MAC address used by STEPHTOSH. This was all the information the officer was able to amass. now it was my understanding that the MAC address of any given device can only be accessed if you're only one 'hop' away on the Internet. the suspect in question was in Markham and the officer part of the Toronto Police, so it's conceivable that they both might have used Rogers internet. but would that still put them only one 'hop' away from each other? i thought the first hop after the modem was usually the ISP? and if he'd used a netBIOS query against this guy's machine it would return the ethernet card's MAC, not the modem's. so is this guy on the same rogers subnet as the suspect's cable modem, is that functionality part of google's Hello (i could only think that it would be possible if Hello operated as a virtual LAN or something), does the officer have remote access to the arp caches of the routers at Rogers or is he just full of crap and lying to make his case stronger?

• Desktop bigger than screen

  I am using MSI U115 11" netbook (OS: Windows XP Home, graphics card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500) and today after I switched it on, desktop was bigger than screen. To be exact: screen resolution was set to the lowest possible and I could move mouse outside of screen (but only below - left, right and up worked normally, mouse could not exceed screen boundaries). I changed resolution back to normal, but the problem with desktop being bigger than screen remained (as before, only lower part - cannot see task bar, etc. When I hit windows button on keyboard, only upper part of menu start is visible). What I already tried was changing all kind of graphics and screen settings - none of them helped. I also tried to restore the system to few days before, but it didn't help neither. What can I do to make the desktop look "normally"? EDIT: Some additional info regarding screen: Sorry it's in polish - but let me explain. There are two screens I can choose (Monitor domyslny means default screen), but the second one (the default one) is not available. After I choose it and click apply number 1. is used (and as you can see it has only two resolutions available. There are more in the second one - but without 1024x600 though). The two ticked and grayed out options here are Use this screen as the main one and Enlarge Windows desktop to match this monitor's size. Too bad I cannot change them. When I choose the second screen, the first box is unchecked and grayed out. The second box is available to be changed but it doesn't matter anyway as after applying changes it reverts to the first screen anyway. EDIT: Intel Graphics Media Control Panel screenshot.

• Can't connect to MySQL on CentOS 5 Error 13 - Permission Denied

  Ok, I have an install of CentOS 5 running as a GuestOS in VirtualBox. The network card for the Cent box is bridged with that of my host OS so that the boxes can see each other. Cent has an IP of 192.168.1.108 and my Host box has an IP of .104. Everything, with regard to networking, seems to be working properly as I can access the Drupal install that is on the Cent box from a web browser on my host box by navigating to http://192.168.1.108 however when I try to configure the database for Drupal through the Drupal install interface I am getting the Can't connect to MySQL error. First I thought this might of been a Firewall issue so I stopped iptables but that had no effect. I thought maybe the user I had setup did not have access to the server so I tried root and that did not work. Searching on the net said that I needed to provide a bind-address parameter to my.cnf so I did that with no change. (As a side note the length of my my.cnf file was MUCH shorter than the ones presented online. In fact under mysqld all I have are datadir, socket, user, and bind-address. Is this normal or should the file be more verbose?) After a few hours of messing with permissions and such I tried using 'localhost' as the value for the database server, from my HOST OS, and the Drupal install kicked off without a problem. So while my issue is resolved I am curious as to why 'localhost' works and why 192.168.1.108 did not? Is there something i need to do to specifically access the MySQL box via the aforementioned IP?   I am not a Linux user, and was doing some homework, I blindly typed sudo mkfs ext3 dev/sda2 (I had Ubuntu as Windows installation). I've done few more things, and turned Ubuntu off to switch on Windows back. No operating system installed - this is the message I'm getting. I plugged my HDD onto another computer and all my files are still there.   I have never assembled a PC before, although I have taken an old one apart and replaced a few parts in others here and there so I have (very) limited experience. I have been looking to make a pc and here are the parts I might buy: Foxconn P45AL Intel P45 (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard (with onboard sound I believe) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card Already have 2 1gb sticks of dual channel DDR2 memory Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 4MB-cache Processor Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache Hard Drive Antec Dark Fleet Series DF10 Gaming Enclosure – Black I already have monitor, mouse, keyboard and DVD/CD drive Akasa Freedom Power 1000W Modular Power Supply I have never done this before so feel free to laugh at me for getting something obvious wrong, forgetting a vital component etc. but is all of this compatible? • No sound through headset - only mic is working

  I noticed that no sound is being played to my headphones. The laptop has a conexant sound card together with the sounds apps provided. But the thing is that I also noticed that now instead of one playback device - 2 are presented: speakers and headphones. And while speakers do play sound nicely - even test sound are not played through headphone output. Also, headphone output does not have a jack assigned to it, while speakers have L R Rear panel Analog Jack(my laptop does not have a jack on the back - only on the right). Also - my headphones have a mic as well - and when I plug it in - the mic is working(using top panel digital jack),but the headphones themselves are not. And laptop is recognizing when audio device is plugged in. And I checked the headset on other devices - the headphones are working. I have tried updating drivers, rolling back drivers and completely uninstalling drivers and then restarting - nothing helped. I imagine that I somehow need to reconfigure the jack configuration just have no idea how and where. Any suggestions? Thanks

  Hi all, Here are my specs beforehand: ECS P4VXASD2+ (V5.0) motherboard FSB 533MHz Intel Pentium 4 2.40A GHz Prescott Socket 478 2x 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM, 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM CoolMax 350W PSU DVD-ROM - will edit with brand & model 128MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro AGP No hard drive So, I just put those parts together today and I tried to power it up, with the monitor connected to the Radeon 9800 in the AGP slot (mobo does not have VGA port). After turning it on, the CPU fan, graphics fan and system fan go on. However, the monitor remains in standby mode, despite being plugged in. Also, after pushing the button on the DVD-ROM drive, it does not open. I've used the DVD-ROM drive before with absolutely no issues. The graphics card was slightly buggy when I put it on another machine, which was left outside in winter weather for 3 months. (Still that computer's integrated graphics worked fine.) CMOS battery was replaced and jumpers are all set correctly. Now, I'm wondering whether the motherboard, CPU, PSU or GPU is the problem. What can I do to test which part is the problem? Just to clarify, I don't have a hard drive, so I usually boot Ubuntu from the disc drive. Anyways, thanks in advance!

I restored the window ghost but failed to boot. I tried to install new window but installation failed after coping the window files. tried to install old vista lonhorn. It inspected found errors, fixed them but ultimatly failed to be installed. Once again restored the ghost through acronis but failed to boot. At the end attached as slave with another pc but it was not visible. Even acronis could not see it or its partitions. Only bios can see it. It seems that no file system is available on the drive. My data on drive is very important. Please help me how to revover my data. Drive brand is Samsung, cap is 160 GB and file system was NTFS.

• Unable to use OpenGL or install nVidia driver on openSUSE 12.2

  I have an ASUS N76VZ laptop with 12.2 openSUSE and GeForce GT650M card. I found that KDE doesn't allow me to use OpenGL rendering. I tried to install nVidia's driver from script but once it writes the xorg.conf file I'm unable to boot desktop. I'm mean specifically if the RAM & Graphic card will fit on the motherboard i chose. Below is a list of all parts. • What laptop would be recommended for video-editing or transcoding to blu-ray?

  I'm looking for a machine (has to be a laptop) reasonably fast enough to handle editing/transcoding/rendering to Blu-ray disc of full true HD 1080p (1920x1080) video from a Samsung R10 camcorder - MPEG4 25fps (not the Sony-Panasonic AVCHD format): To be able to browse through the footage (say, quarter screen is fine for monitoring) and do simple edits - cut out bad bits, add titles, fades, nothing too fancy To be able to burn the footage in 1920x1080p 24p (twenty-four) fps to blu-ray, probably don't mind if I have to leave it for a few hours, or even overnight, as long as its not still running in the morning or takes days. I ALREADY have an external USB 2.0 LG BE06LU10 blu-ray burner. Does quad core make much difference? Or would Dual-core suffice for the above? NVidia because of CUDA for increased speed. What software today can take advantage of this? Which graphics card do I need? So far I've found Dell/Alienware to be well-specified, having a 5yr old Dell laptop that still runs well, albeit slow by today's standards, gives me a good impression. My concerns are too much fan-noise and budget and some Dell Precision Laptops exceed 1500 pounds. Thoughts?

• Stop the constant random reboots of my GIGABYTE GA-B75M-D3V

  I've got some issues with a new system. It's rebooting constantly. The system consists of a: brand new: Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3V with F9 BIOS (latest) Intel Core i5-3470 Ivy Bridge 2x 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 1600MHz memory (mem-tested x-86) coming from a stable system: Creative Soundcard X-FI Titanium Asus Radeon HD4850 OCZ Vertex 3 120G SSD Sata 3 Hard disk 1TB Sata 2 ASUS Blu-ray Drive PSU 400w Connected peripherals : Toshiba tv (displayport on dvi of MB or HD4850) Wired mouse, wireless keyboard (logitech) Bluetooth usb key Azio main problem : it's not possible to read the errors from the MB. nothing on the manual neither on internet. At the beginning, I received a MB with graphic problems and the problem of rebooting. I RMA'd it. The new one doesn't have any graphic problems. but it's still constantly rebooting. I removed everything except the HD, the sound-card, the blu-ray drive and the wireless keyboard. It's still unexpectdly rebooting. I'm running a test with just the motherboard and the HD. I will update this text after the test. I've got some questions : Somebody have an idea of a test? The PSU could cause that problem? I used it a lot of years with the stable system. Update 1: BTW, if anyone has the same problem, the manual won't say it but you'll need to reset the bios between two tests (the screwdriver on the two pins) if you suspect a problem of compatibility .

• Simulating audio playback on headless linux server

  Hi people, We have a headless linux server (Debian 5) we use for runnin integration tests of our web-page code. Among these tests are ones implemented using Selenium, which practically simulates a user browsing our pages and clicking on things. One of these tests is failing now, because it involves starting a flash-based audio player and checking to see whether the progress bar gets displayed properly. The reason this test fails is that there is no way to play the audio, and no sound card on the machine, which has simple webserver hardware. So, my question would be: Is there a simple way of giving a program the impression that its audio output is being processed, and playback is taking place? I don't have to record the playback, or redirect it or anything like that, just a dummy soundcard, like the dummy X-server we aer using, which actually does not need to display stuff. I have tried using JACK, but it's too complicated, and the documentation does not even answer this very simple question. I also installed alsa on the server; it 'pretends' to run, but when a program tries to play audio, just spews error and debug information having to do with the non-existence of a soundcard. It would be really awesome if one of you has a simple answer to this question. Cheers, Ulas

• Desktop PC does not power up on power button

  When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration.
